Pirates activate former owner from DL
« on: September 22, 2012, 12:39:43 pm »
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8409943/ex-pittsburgh-pirates-owner-kevin-mcclatchy-comes-gay

Splendid url, ESPN.

Kevin McClatchy, the owner and CEO of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1996 to 2007, has acknowledged he is gay to The New York Times, saying frequent homophobic slurs he heard in baseball circles had convinced him to keep his sexual orientation a secret.

I would be a lot more impressed had he done this while he fucking owned the team. More importantly it would have done a lot more good.

My current favorite fucked up thing about the Pirates is the controversy about their minor league SEAL-inspired training where players drill by punching and kicking one another when they are not undergoing bizarre fraternity style hazing.

That's true, but you have to feel for the guy.  Nobody is obligated to be a martyr.

What ever happened to the two Indian guys they signed who had never played baseball before?

I don't know how possible it is to be a martyr if you are the owner of the team. We're not talking about some assistant GM or a head scout.

You know, JD was talking about the Indian guys a month ago or so. Apparently that experiment was not an overwhelming success and they both went back to whatever it was they were doing. The scout that signed them said he was very sari.

I'm sure that scout's stature in the organization saagged.

Maybe "cause" would have been a better term than "martyr."  Nobody should have to volunteer themselves for a shitstorm just because of who they are.

It was probably obvious to everybody.  All he wanted to do was hang out and talk about baseball.

Why would it have done a lot more good?

Why would it have done a lot more good?

Because hiding it does zero good. Any amount of good that comes from helping to change attitudes is a lot more than zero.
