Position Summary - Middle Infield
« on: January 22, 2013, 11:13:04 am »
Spring will be here very soon, and like last year, I thought I would take a stab at predicting who will end up where when the national anthem sounds for real.  I depend completely on secondary sources for this … no insider information.  This post deals with middle infielders.

As far as I can tell, there are 24 players under Astros control that can be seen primarily as middle infielders.  There were a few guys who floated between 3B and 2B/SS.  I included Andrew Simunic and Jose Solano here (and also Ruben Sosa, who played some OF), but Chan Moon and John Hinson under corner infielders.  There are probably 15-18 slots on full season clubs.

Lowrie and Altuve seem set for the big club, and I expect Marwin Gonzalez to fill the backup role again (unless his leg problems sideline him).  Jake Elmore may also have a shot, but I expect (and hope) that Tyler Greene will be gone.

I expect to see Villar and Martinez at AAA, with Brandon Wikoff as the backup (assuming he is recovered from injury).  Andrew Simunic could also be in the mix here, but at 27 he is no longer a prospect.  This makes him vulnerable if the organization decides it needs to keep Elmore around, either in Houston or Oklahoma City.

AA is a bit more up in the air.  I expect Jiovanni Mier to start at SS, but I am not sure about 2B.  Last year Kike Hernandez was jumped past Delino DeShields, but with the numbers DDj put up last year, it may be hard not to start him in CC.   I am going to give the nod to Hernandez, though, with Ben Orloff (or maybe Alex Todd) backing up and DDj starting the season in Lancaster.

Whoever loses out for starting 2B in Corpus will probably get that role in Lancaster, with Nolan Fontana joining him at SS.  I see Alex Todd (or maybe Ben Orloff) as the backup here.  In spite of some good AB’s last year, I do not see either of them as fast-track material.  Ruben Sosa may also end up at Lancaster and get some PT at 2B.

Quad Cities could be interesting in terms of the “new future”.  Austin Elkins did very well in his pro debut (though he tailed off in August), and I expect him to hold down 2B from opening day.  And increasingly I am convinced that the Astros will “rush” Carlos Correa into full season ball to cover the other side of the middle infield.  Joe Sciafani and/or Brian Blasik should fill out the roster.

Good work.  Hard to argue that any of the picks are "wrong".  Some may play out differently, but they make sense.  The most interesting decisions (and perhaps most difficult) will be with DDS and Correa.  From everything I've read, it sounds like they want Correa to start at QC.  It's possible that he goes back to SS, but when you're in his shoes and the GM mentions a higher level as an option, you have to like your chances.  I wouldn't rule DDS out at Corpus, but he didn't spend that much time at Lancaster, so repeating there (at least for a couple of months) is a strong option.

Another great list.  Thanks for the work.  I agree that it is going to be hard to keep DDJ out of Corpus.  I also agree that Correa will be at QC but after watching him play, I am not sure it is a rush.  Defensively he is ready and his bat looked good in Greeneville.  Wouldn't be surprised to see Blasik jumped to Lancaster as a back up due to his age and his positional flexibility.
Always ready to go to a game.

I think you've got this one right with Correa at Quad Cities.

We need to add Carlos Perdomo to this list.  Per BA transaction list, he was signed this month after being released by the Phillies.  Played 38G at 2B and 18 at SS last year in a repeat trip to Phillies' class A affiliate in the Sally League.  He also hit .251/.304/.312 (after .255/.323/.308 in 2011).  Looks like a spare part somewhere to me.

Hearing that ALex Todd has hung up his cleats, so this is probably a replacement spare part.

DDS is going back to Cali.

Not confirmed, but Correa believes he is going to Quad Cities once the season starts.

So with the announcement of minor league rosters yet the absence of any games to follow, I'll use this mini-void to look at my predictions. No real surprises here, except the placement of FA signees Torrez & Perdomo.

End of April and a business trip gives me some time on my hands, so … early season positional analysis:  Middle Infielders.

Houston
Jose Altuve (.330/.374/.438) has been the regular at 2B.  At SS, Marwin Gonzalez (19G; .297/.338/.516) has split time with Ronnie Cedeno (9G; .325/.333/.475).  Marwin actually leads the team in SLG!!

Oklahoma City
Jake Elmore (.333/.425/.489) is getting 80% of the PT at 2B, while Jonathan Villar (.289/.337/.433) has been a fixture at SS (where he continues to struggle to make the routine plays).  Elmore also started 1 game at SS, and Andrew Simunic, Ruben Sosa and Raoul Torrez all started 2 games at 2B.  Jose Martinez started 1 game at 2B (and 1 at 3B) before going on the DL.  Super-sub Simunic continues to hit as always (.387/.459/.419 in 27 PA) and is spending most of his time in the OF recently.  Sosa has disappeared from the roster with no transaction that I can find.

Corpus Christi
Enrique Hernandez (.203/.292/.329) is the regular at 2B and Jio Mier (.175/.264/.238) is the regular at SS.  Both started the season in more reasonable fachion, but have struggled over the past two weeks (a combined 16 for 110).  Ben Orloff (.322/.408/.356) was activated mid-month and has played 5 games each at 2B & SS (along with 5 at 1B and 3 at 3B).

Lancaster
Delino DeShields (.250/.341/.375) is getting about 2/3 of the PT at 2B.  He has only made 2 errors, but I do not have any reports on how he has progressed defensively.  On the basepaths, he must be giving something away, because he was only successful on 5 of 11 steal attempts in April.  Nolan Fontana has been the regular at SS, with an amazing .365/.513/.565 batting line for April.  Again, I do not have insights into his defensive progress, but he looks like a bat they have to find room for somewhere.  Raoul Torrez (.167/.250/.250) got 5 starts at 2B (and 5 at 3B and 1 at SS) before being bumped to OKC, and Carlos Perdomo (.143/.294/.143) has gotten into 4 games at 2B and 1 at 3B since being promoted from Quad Cities.

Quad Cities
Joe Sciafani (.205/.396/.231) was the early starter at 2B, but once Austin Elkins (.293/.383/.341 with 6SB in 7 attempts) joined the team from EST, he has been relegated to backup status at both middle infield positions.  Carlos Correia (.221/.384/.397) has gotten most of the time at SS.  Correa started strong (.276/.432/.483 through April 15th), but tailed off badly (.179/..347/.333) later in the month.  (And he missed the first few games in May … not sure what that is about.)  Carlos Perdomo (.294/.429/.294) got into 5 games combined between 2B & SS before getting promoted to Lancaster.

An early June business trip gives me another opportunity to look at positional analysis after month #2:  Middle Infielders.

Houston
Jose Altuve (.300/.341/.390) continues to be the regular at 2B, though he has cooled off a little since April.   Jake Elmore drank coffee at the position for 3 games while Jose was on the bereavement list. At SS, Marwin Gonzalez (18G in May; .179/.188/.209) has continued to split time with Ronnie Cedeno (12G in May; .243/.317/.324).  Marwin no longer leads the team in SLG – total line for the year down to .237/.263/.359.

Oklahoma City
Jake Elmore (.287/.380/.427) is still getting most of the PT at 2B.   Jonathan Villar (.238/.304/.400 in May; .262/.320/.416 overall) only missed 1 game at SS in May.  Super-sub, Andrew Simunic played 7 games at 2B, including every game that Elmore missed on his brief call-up.  (He also appeared at 3B and in the outfield, where I will cover him this month).

Corpus Christi
Enrique Hernandez (.217/.277/.326) continues to be the starter at 2B, and Jio Mier (.208/.313/.315) is the regular at SS.  Both are struggling for the season, but Mier is showing some signs of improvement with a .239/.356/.386 batting line in May.  Ben Orloff (.283/.360/.317) backed up at both positions (along with 3B).

Lancaster
Delino DeShields spent a week on the DL, but ended up posting a May line of .312/.418/.442 and 7-for-9 in base-stealing.  That raised his overall line to .282/.382/.409 and 12-for-20 on the year.  He was error-free in 20 May appearances.  Nolan Fontana spent a week on the DL, but still got half the appearances at SS.  He cooled off to .241/.339/.333 in May after an April start of .365/.513/.565.  Joe Sciafani (.367/.485/.468 in 99 PA) was promoted from Quad Cities to fill in for Fontana and made the most of his opportunity.  Carlos Perdomo (.217/.288/.239) played 5 games at 2B, 4 at SS and 2 at 3B before going on the DL, and Jean Batista got into 2 games at 2B after his activation (though he has now been sent back to EST, probably to arrive at Tri-City later in June).

Quad Cities
Carlos Correia (.292/.404/.422) has heated up, especially since his brief stint on the DL, hitting .349/.423/.442 and a team-high 6 doubles and 18 RBI in May.  Sciafani hit .316/.500/.421 in 6 May games (5 filling in for Correa at SS plus 1 at 2B) earning his promotion to Lancaster.  Austin Elkins (.260/.377/.341) continues to get the bulk of playing time at 2B.  Brian Blasik (.221/.346/.265) was activated early in the month from EST, and has seen time at 2B (7 games), SS (3) and 3B (1).

Interesting addendum ... As i was putting this together, I considered mentioning Ruben Sosa again, who simply vanished from OKC in early April without leaving a trace of a transaction, but I felt like coach would role out the WFW comment.

He is leading off and starting in LF for Quad Cities in about 45 minutes.

I know you did May but Jose Martinez is back with the hooks.  Just a mere 10 for 14 to start his year

I saw that too, but I needed some cut-off ... probably should have at least mentioned it, though.  Glad you did.  It is not clear to me yet whether he will be replacing Kike as the (semi-)regular at 2B in Corpus, or just tuning up for a return to AAA.
