I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Mine was, "Does he lay off the down and away slider?" but yeah, I can definitely see either of yours.

There were actually a couple of Sons-of-'Stros at the PG All-American Classic held at Petco Park this evening

THIS LINK has various mentions of both Cavan Biggio and Kacy Clemens (easier to let you 'search' the page than post them all). A couple of 'highlights' though:

Peak pitching velocities *** Kacy Clemens - 92
***
Clint Frazier was the only other participant to hit a home run in the challenge, as PETCO Park proved to be particularly tough on the sluggers this afternoon.  ***Williams hit nine home runs in the first round of the Rawlings Home Run Challenge on Saturday conducted at Point Loma Nazarene University.  Reese McGuire led all of the participants with 10 home runs in the opening round, followed by Williams and Cavan Biggio ( 8 ).
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Now, if they did that at PETCO, then I'd be impressed.  Really, though, Cavan has had some very good performances over the last few weeks.  Maybe he gets more attention than most because of the name, but I wonder how high his stock can go.  He doesn't seem to have top-10 tools, but there are tools and a good level of polish for a HS kid.

My pipe dream hope for him ending up in an Astros uni is that his dad insists he go to college, signing bonuses be damned.  It's not like he'll be hurting for money for the next three-four years anyway.

I don't know...that's a lot of pressure to put on a kid.

You might want to see a shrink about that.

Where's the armor? (BTW - he has a nice swing, but eventually, he'll need to be a little more quieter in the box to hit professional pitchers. And he has the arm of a second baseman... meaning, looks like he has no arm at all.)

Ha, I get it.  Armor...polish...Anyway, he has a nice swing, an "advanced" approach at the plate to go along with some pop, and, from what I've read a reliable, accurate arm.  He's not going to play a premium position and doesn't have enough power right now to draft him near the top, but a strong summer followed by a strong senior season could improve his standing.

ETA:  Never mind, armor joke flew well over my head.

BA was curious as well.... (LINK)

One thing Biggio didn't inherit was the huge arm guard that his father became well known for wearing when he dug in at the plate.

"That's in the attic somewhere," said Biggio. "That pad is actually illegal now because it was so big."

Unlike his father, who was hit by pitches a modern-day record 287 times, Cavan said he doesn't need the guard.

"I rarely get hit," he said. "I'm better at dodging the ball."

The Under Armour All America game was yesterday and Kacy Clemens pitched a scoreless inning. I will say that it was no real indicator of how he actually pitches though.

I get to see him pitch on a regular basis. I saw him three times last year. He has fantastic stuff including an overhead hammer that is the best I saw all year. His hook was not working very well yesterday, so if you had the chance to watch the game, his curve is much better than that.

The best I can tell you about Clemens is that he has fantastic stuff, but like most 17 year olds, he has no idea where it is going yet. I saw him walk seven batters in three innings last year. Though it was against a team that always has good at bats and had three or four kids that are going to play division I ball.

But he does have a ton of potential once he figures out how to first control his pitches and eventually commands them. I hope he does go to UT because it would be great for him to learn there rather than at a Gulf Coast league or something like that.
