Now that the Legends have finished their extra inning game, I can do their “April in Review”. Still hoping to comment on all the affiliates.
Lexington opened the season 3-7 and has gone 8-7 since then to finish at 11-14 for the month. Their pitching rotation has been a mess. Only Mike Foltynewicz (3-1, 1.98, 27:10 K:BB in 27.1 IP) and Nick Tropeano (1-2, 2.36, 33:8 in 26.2 IP) have even been able to last long enough to qualify for the win on a regular basis. Kyle Hallock, gave up 5 HR today in a 3.1 inning start, which has been about his average longevity (18 IP in 5 GS), while Jonas Dufek (15.2 IP in 4 GS) has not fared much better. Tanner Bushue was banished to the bullpen after 3 disastrous starts, and has sinced lowered his ERA from 21.94 to 18.82. He has also struck out 10 and walked “only” 6 in 11 IP. Luis Cruz has apparently taken over Tanner’s spot in the rotation and had a couple of good outings; his 25:3 K:BB ratio in 24.1 IP (2 GS + 4 GR) is encouraging as well. He is coming off of injury & disappointment last year. Carlos Quevedo made 2 disappointing starts early (0-1, 12.86, 10:2 in 7 IP) but has been stellar out of the bullpen (0-0, 0.56, 18:1 in 5 relief appearances covering 16 IP).
Two more bright spots in the overworked bullpen are Jason Chowning (3 saves, 0 ER and only 7 H with 17 K in 13.1 IP, but also 8 BB) and Dayan Diaz (4-1, 0.49 ERA, 19:7 in 18.1 IP), who took the loss today allowing his first ER of the season in the process. Evan Grills (7 G, 13.2 IP), Nate Pettus (6, 15.1) and Murilio Gouvea (8, 15.1) have also gotten a lot of work with mixed results. The most encouraging of these may be Gouvea, who has a 19:4 K:BB ratio after struggling with control issues last year. Scott Zuloaga also appeared in 5 games (with limited success) and is now on the inactive list.
In the field, there has also been some turmoil:
C – Roberto Pena is the regular, but Mike Kvasnicka has gotten about 1/3 of the starts.
1B – Tyler Burnett started early and was released; Zach Johnson has taken over as the regular.
2B – Delino DeShields
3B – Matt Duffy
SS – Alex Todd/James Howick
LF – Jordan Scott
CF – Drew Muren
RF – Emilio King/Justin Gominsky
Kvasnicka has gotten most of the starts at DH. Chris Epps recently joined the team from EST and has been in the lineup fairly regularly (LF & RF). John Hinson has also joined and gotten playing time at both 2B & 3B; he also has 4 errors already in 3 games. Miles Hamblin opened the season in Lexington as the 3rd catcher, but has been reassigned to Tri-City.
Offensive performances of note include:
Scott was on fire the first 10 games (.424/.533/.455 with 6 SB) causing some to clamor for a promotion, but over the last 15 he is a chilly .157/.279/.157 and 0-for-1 stealing. Drew Muren showed the opposite trend, starting at .160/.222/.200, but hitting .333/.389/.500 over the last 15 and playing a solid CF. DeShields (.253/.363/.337) is a perfect 16 of 16 in the SB department and has also learned to walk more (16 against 21 K in 95 AB). Zach Johnson has driven in 30 to lead the team and sports a .275/.376/.505 line for the season. Matt Duffy has been a fixture in the middle of the order hitting .296/.343/.459, leading the team in hits (29) and tied with Johnson for the HR lead at 4. Alex Todd (.300/.375/.414) has been a pleasant surprise at the plate and solid in the field, while his regular backup at SS, James Howick, has managed a respectable .257/.333/.371.
Major disappointments include Kvasnicka at .118/.167/.191 (though he did come alive with 3 of his 8 season hits today), Emilio King (.107/.206/.143) who appears to be losing playing time, and Roberto Pena (.188/.298/.250). Of course, Tyler Burnett’s pre-release .188/.257/.313 probably counts here as well.
