All 0's thru 1.  THE ALTUVE put a charge into one, but to the wrong place as it was within a mile of Michael Bourn (or just about to the track in left center).  Speaking of Bourn, did anyone see if he got an ovation or not?!?

Four hits in the 2nd stake the Braves an early 2-0 lead.

Sounds like they're making Happ throw pitches they want to hit, and spoiling the marginal ones.

3-0 now.

Looks like Happ is really killing the Astros tonight.

(I've only got GameDay for now.  I have access to MLB.tv, but the streaming is terrible when I'm in Shanghai.)

Castro has exceptionally poor technique at blocking pitches in the dirt.

I'm not doing anything until I find out how long this TV situation is going to last. I'm thinking it'll clear up but I don't know anything yet. If I have to go to another carrier, I will but I'm not going to jump in based on a week's worth of farkeling.

Adding to the weirdness of it was that it was a crowd shot, so there's hundreds of people, but that was the only jersey.

Happ may piss us off, but at least the Astros didn't pay a $50 million posting fee for him, or sign him to a 5-year contract at $10+ million/year. Unlike somebody else who's getting smacked around tonight.

Really?  It was that easy, huh?

Halfway decent throw would've easily had him at 3B.  The baserunning though was a heads-up play, no?  Altuve is a goner (I think) at 1B but for schreefer getting in SS's head, no?

Schafer kept rounding the bag like you're taught. At that point it's a foot race to 3b. Not an easy throw nor an easy play for the SS.

Not entirely worthless information.  Brownie said the paid gate was 20K something and actual attendance was 14K.  I've wondered if there is a set percentage the gates are over-reported at.

In this case, actual attendance is 70% of reported gate.  I wonder if that is an exception one way or the other, or a useful rule of thumb?

Went back and listened. Cool.

I'm always fearful that someone is going to tell him about this foul mouthed jackass who posts on a board in his name. I'd hate to piss the guy off.

Hell, he's got to be in his 70s by now.  What are you worried about?

Don't worry, you're hard to pick out from the rest of us foul mouthed jackasses.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Listening on MLB at bat is pretty cool.  You can listen to the Braves announcers, who are annoying, but still easier on the mind than Doray and the blind man.  Trouble is, the feed is about a minute late.  I saw Bogey hit into a DP on game day before I heard it over at bat.  So, I went to XM Internet.  Turns out you must listen to the Astros feed, but it is about five minutes late.  I heard Bogeys DP again.

Or Butkus, before his knees were shot.

Tebow's probably the closest to a throwback, though.  Bobby Douglass type.  Of course, everyone says he is a terrible QB, and I guess he is.

I disagree.  A good/great athlete could compete in any era.  The environment they are competing is different.

Exactly.  Give those same guys the training and experiences the players these days have and they would be competing right there with them.

I'm watching the Cubs mount a comeback against the Brewers. The Brewers "defense" has been totally incompetent.

I guess. Apparently the outfielders haven't yet adjusted to the reduced gravitational pull from the first base area.

I don't think it's evolution - just saying that if you picked a player from the 60s off the field with your time machine and dropped him in today's NFL, he wouldn't have a chance

Just peewee - school didn't have football.

I think there's something that stays in you if you played, some kind of fire for the combat maybe. I can rationally see that players are much larger and faster as time progresses, but the heart of the fighter is something that isn't bound by those constraints. I loved baseball more than just about anything, but the nuclear fire I had when I was playing football was another dimension entirely, and what I've found is that grows exponentially with the higher levels of play.

Rationally, what you said is true. Emotionally, I would drive you into a wall for saying it so cavalierly.

The physical abilities of the players - look at the size of offensive linemen, for example.

It's as clear as runners being faster and people being physically larger. It's training, nutrition and evolution. On the counter side, the medical care was primitive at best, weather conditions horrible, travel even worse and there was constant fatigue. All we have is they were the best in the world at that time.

I'm pretty sure there is a larger pool of players and the pool is much better organized.

Speaking of large players, here's a picture of Nellie Fox, Frank Howard and Harmon Killebrew I came across the other day. Howard was listed as 6'7".

Interesting fact - Simeon Rice was 6'5, 270 and ran a 10.03 100 meters in college. In 1968, that would have made him the fastest man in the world.

Let him grow up to be 18 in 1968 and he'd be another fat guy trying to not get drafted.

And I really liked Maxwell's post-game interview.  He seemed like a nice guy genuinely swept up in a bewildering and wonderful moment.

This is one of the most astute GZ posts ever.

And I really liked Maxwell's post-game interview.  He seemed like a nice guy genuinely swept up in a bewildering and wonderful moment.

That's great. We don't get the post-game stuff on the mlb extra innings package.

I knew that I could count on you. That's the one thing that I've learned in the over 15 years of being here.
