John Sickels on Astros farm system
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:35:59 pm »
The Houston Base Ball Club's fleet of bus riders collectively came in at an underwhelming #25 on John Sickels/Minor League Ball's new farm rankings, although he does say "Gradually improving, and there are several players at the lower levels with a chance to develop. Could rank much higher a year from now."

By the way, maybe someone else posted this earlier- but here is a "revised 1/18" breakdown of the Astros' top prospects by Sickels. Lots of interesting stuff here: he ranks Weiland- who came over with Lowrie in the Melancon deal- 9th, ahead of guys like DeShields, Houser, and Nash; he also feels like the Astros have rushed guys like Villar and Seaton, which is quite a change. He names Buchanan as a "sleeper guy to watch for 2012" despite his #20 ranking.

By the way, perhaps almost as importantly (for the Astros' future), Sickles ranked the StL farm 5th overall. Maybe that LooNo guy kinda knew what he was doing there...?

More prospect rankings:

MLB.com-Jonathan Singleton (#44 overall)

Quote
Scouting report: Singleton has a special bat from the left side of the plate. He should hit for plenty of average, and the power started to come in 2011, with much more on the way. He has a good game plan at the plate with excellent discipline.

Upside potential:  An All-Star 1B who hits for average and power.

Jarred Cosart (#61 overall)

Quote
Scouting report:  Health...He has electric stuff, with a plus fastball that touches the upper 90s. His curve, while inconsistent at times, can be nasty, and he’ll even show glimpses of an excellent changeup. He’s lean and projectable.

Upside:  Frontline starter or worst case, back of the pen reliever.

George Springer (#84 overall)

Quote
His quick bat generates a ton of raw power, which will play as a plus if he continues to make consistent contact. He has above-average speed and is a savvy baserunner who will be a threat to steal. He has above-average range in center and could certainly stay there, though his future plus arm would also play well in right field.

Upside:  5-tool CF with consistent 20-20 seasons

Our #32 guy, according to BA:

Remember also that in most teams, JD, Altuve, and Paredes would've still been in the farm systems - that HOU has promoted so many kids so quickly into the majors (and given the enough ABs not to qualify as MiLBers), that the farm system rankings will be skewed a tad...
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Lyles would have been near the top, as well.  Depending on how much he liked those guys, could have been ~20.
