Barmes a Pirate
« on: November 21, 2011, 01:40:31 pm »
Sorry if Cabrera'd.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7264758/clint-barmes-says-agreed-pittsburgh-pirates

This means the Astros get a compensatory draft pick, as Barmes is a Type B free agent and he signed before Wednesday.

"The Astros have until Nov. 23 to decide if they're going to offer salary arbitration to Barmes, who's a Type B free agent. He would have to sign with another team before Nov. 23 or reject the Astros' offer of arbitration in order for Hoston to get a compensatory pick in next year's First-Year Player Draft. He has until Dec. 7 to accept or reject arbitration. "

You were cabrera'd but the compensation, if any, is dependent on what is written in the new CBA.  We should get the picture tomorrow.

Just in time to screw the Astros. How surprising.

McTaggart saying we should receive compensation:
Quote
The Astros will receive a supplemental pick in next year's First-Year Player Draft for losing Barmes, who was a Type-B free agent.

At least we'll get that out of the offseason.

It looks like the big changes come next off-season including an offer of arbitration not being part of potential compensation.  Teams will have to make some kind of contract offer, I think.

What I've read indicates that teams will have to make a fairly substantial 1-year offer to their free agents to receive compensation, with the number rising in subsequent off seasons. I think the offer in the first year is in the $12-12.5 million range.

So a year of Barmes plus a 1st rd suppl pick out of Paulino? Well done.

Astros picking #1 and #36 as of now, but that will fall.  I believe the Astros will get two consecutive picks, the last pick of the supplemental round and the first pick of the second round.
