Trailer Park Boys
« on: April 24, 2011, 08:04:25 pm »
Two weeks ago I noticed an announcement for a live show coming to the Paramount Theater here in Austin, called the Trailer Park Boys. My first thought was, probably some music crap like the Jersey Boys. But thankfully, I read the bio and press release accompanying the announcement and discovered for the first time, the comedic misadventures of Julian, Ricky, Bubbles, and the boys, and their long running tv show. Anyway, it may be the funniest television series ever. The Trailer Park Boys was a Canadian show that was featured from 2001 to 2007 on ShowCase (Canadian version of HBO or Showtime) and is done mockumentary style like the versions of The Office as it follows the boys about their petty crimes and screwed up lives (Trailer Park Boys actually predates the Brit version of the Office by a few months). It seems as if each season starts with the guys getting out of prison and ends with them heading back to the slammer, or as their nemesis, Mr. Layhe, the trailer park supervisor calls it: Con College.

The show all takes place in and around the community surrounding a trailer park in some small town in Nova Scotia, sorta proving, in that mockumentary style, that hicks and po'buckers come from all regions, not just the American South and San Bernadino.

So, Netflix is streaming the shows plus the two feature films they did. I've breezed though the first 5 seasons in two weeks and the show just keeps getting better and dumber and still funny. I kept thinking that this shit should be getting old by now but it wasn't. Certainly, this kind of humor is not for everyone. If you took away the crudeness and foul language and the stupid idiots doing really dumb things, there wouldn't be much of a show. But that stuff is in there and it's pretty goddamn funny. If you have Netflix you might want to check it out.

Yes, it is awesome.  The first movie they did is hilarious.
Crazy Joe McCluskey was fucking nuts.  It's why they called him Crazy Joe.

I've been watching this a lot recently. The second season is particularly awesome. The episode where Bubbles' shed burns down is a classic.

Bubbles grows from a secondary player into one of the main three characters by the end of season two and the beginning of season three. I fuckin' love Bubbles. That episode was a great one. Wait 'til the episode where they kidnap Alex Lifeson--think that's in season three.

Season 3, Episode 5. Very nice.
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

I hate to be the contrarian here, or the Hudson Hawk as it were, but I just watched that episode a couple of days ago and thought it had serious jump the shark potential.

There were a few episodes when I thought that it was close but the Alex Lifeson episode wasn't one of them, neither was Conky. Or Patrick Swayze's Train.

I haven't seen those others yet, but I like season 2 a lot more than season 3. It just always bugs me when shows start to reflect their own success. The actors start hamming it up too much (Leahy and Bubbles especially this season), and plots venture into more and more unbelievable territory. I do like the episodes after the Lifeson one, though, so I haven't given up.

There's a lot of foreshadowing in that episode that comes full circle in the last few episodes of season 7. You later find out why Julian hates being teased about his youthful infatuation with Patrick Swayze. I thought Ricky's interactions with Conky were sublime. Season 5 is pretty good, Bubbles trying to rehab a marijuana addicted Mountain Lion was my favorite episode that season. Season 6 was a bit slow, however, season 7 was outstanding and tops them all. Unfortunately, Ellen Page never makes a return to the show... I guess she became too big of a star.
