NLCS game 4

SF with a run in the bottom of the 1st. After 1 inning 1-0 Gints.
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

End of 2 it's Giants 1 and the Phills nothing. On the second out of the Phillies' half, Rollins was called out after being caught off base after a fairly obvious balk that wasn't called.

After four still the same score. The Phillies look like a team that could be swept in a 4 game series at home by the Astros.

And Ruiz is very slow. And Victorino spaced out and didn't take second. Good base running and the Phills have three runs instead of 1.

Brutal inning for the Gints. And it could have been (and still could be) worse.

There are wild pitches and there are pitches so wild that the ball bounces into the stands. With the bases loaded all runners advance a base. Polanco's run makes it 4-2 Phillies after 5.5.

Brutal inning for the viewers too.  It took an hour to get six outs in the fifth.

Sandoval gets maybe robbed of the go ahead hit on a foul ball that appeared to just catch a bit of paint, but then a squares up a double to left-center.  Giants up 5-4.  Still none out in the bottom of the 6th.

That double to the gap was probably a make-up for Sandoval: I think his shot down the line that was called foul was probably fair.

McCarver thought it was fair, so I have to believe the ump made the right call.

That was a good game to watch but I would have been torture if I really cared who won.

I started out rooting for the Phillies but damn, this Giant team is scrappy. Lincecum vs Halladay tomorrow.

the Phillies now know what an Oswalt inning is.

Funny, I had just made the exact same comment on FB.

Actually didn't look like that bad a pitch.  Uribe just reach down and got it.

Yeah, I was really surprised that he was able to pull that in the air.

yeah, exactly what he wanted to throw, especially after the hard stuff way in.  could have easily been a double play.

sure, IF he had rolled over on it, which he did not. great bat control by Uribe. i loved it.

Bingo!  How many times have you heard Oswalt a pitcher prick on about making "one mistake" that got tagged for a dinger...with 2 or 3 runners already aboard.

True.  Then again, Posey is a friggin' machine. Kid is amazing.

Several observations:

1. Charlie Manuel out-thunk hisself by not having Jimmy Rollins bunt Werth to third with no outs.  If successful, Sergio Romo pitches the next two guys differently because if he throws a steady diet of sliders as he did, then Jayson could score from third on a pass ball.  Plus, it would be about putting the ball in play for Francisco (more on that later) than having to come up with a hit to score the man.

2. Why not pitch hit for Francisco with the left handed hitting Ibanez?

3. Roy Oswalt tried to intimidate Uribe with chin music to keep him off his slider/changeup on the outside corner... didn't work, the man was still leaning out over the plate.  Methinks the next meeting (if one happens), Oswalt will hit him in the square of the back just to make sure he (Uribe) understands that leaning out over the plate is not something Roy appreciates.  (see: Barrett, Michael)

and lastly...

Last night's situation is eggszactly what Roy wanted to be in this season and he got it.  So be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.  Baseball is about success and about failure and how you handle each.  So if you want to test your character and be placed in those situations, be prepared to answer to failure just as much as success.

I don't have a problem with Roy's desire to pitch in the playoffs.  I'm also fine with his realization that the '09-'10 Astros weren't going to get there.  His actions after he came to this epiphany are what bother me.  And yes, he must now deal with his failures in a much bigger spotlight.  I bet Philly's hotter than concrete in July in Houston right now.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

I was thinking to myself, "Man, would I want Roy out of the bullpen if the Astros were in the same situation?" My answer kept coming up, "No."

He volunteered to pitch.  That's understandable, he's a pitcher.  But Manuel doesn't have to put him in...

I'm trying to understand, if you knew that you were willing to use Roy in the 9th, then why did you run Contreras, Durbin, and Bastardo out there first?
