Guitars and the beach
« on: July 23, 2010, 05:47:34 pm »
We're headed to Galveston (weather permitting) next week, and I was thinking of taking my acoustic with me (it's a maple topped guitar).  I have reservations because in my mind's eye I see strings breaking, the neck warping, etc.  I wasn't planning on taking it to the beach itself, just leaving it in the beach house.  Am I being paranoid?

You are worried about having your guitar in a house that happens to be near the beach?

In an environment with salty air, high humidity, and yes, near (actually on) the beach.

Just wipe it down when you get home. I know you can do it because I once saw the Beach Boys doing it. I think.

Yes. If you lived on the beach and let the guitar sit on a stand rather than snug in a good case for years and years you'd surely notice the weather's effects over time. But for a week? Hell no. That said I brought a $300 Takamine with me to Panama and left all my good stuff in my Houston place that is terminally about 60 degrees and dry.

Your guitar will be fine.  They even *sell* guitars in places like Galveston.  I take mine to the beach itself.  I have numerous friends in Florida who gig on the beach several times a week.  If you constantly take it back and forth between Hawai'i and Arizona, you'll notice some effects, but a week at a beach house in Galveston...don't worry about it.

Thanks Chuck and Hudson, that's what I was looking for.  My guitars don't ever leave the house so I was a bit worried (especially with a fairly thin maple top), but I fancy me chances now.  Thanks again.

If you're concerned, let up the tension on the strings a bit when you travel, then tune up once you get there.  You'll need to anyway.  You don't need to worry about breaking strings or your neck, but if it gives you peace of mind...

Elvis did it in a movie once, didn't he?

If so, then it's probably okay.

Forget what Chuck, Hudson, myself, even Gizzmo, said earlier.  What you really need is to get a guitar designed to be used around water.

A friend of mine in Florida got one of these, just for playing at beach parties and bars

I always thought relatively high humidity was good for guitars, like cigars, or skin.  Isn't it the trip to the desert that you're supposed to worry about?

You worry about rapid changes in humidity.  But overall, yeah, you'd prefer it to be humid than dry.
