Sunday Morning Trivia
« on: April 11, 2010, 09:35:23 am »
Let me begin by wishing a happy birthday to King Gambrinus of Flanders, one of the unofficial Patron Saints of beer.

Jeez what an ugly start to the season.  It is not however, the worst start in franchise history.  Twice before, in 1969 and 1978, the Astros lost their first 5 games.  Their record for consecutive  losses to begin a season is 9, in 1983.  They turned that season around somewhat by finishing with 85 wins.

Anyway...Who is the only player in franchise history to appear as a catcher and a pitcher in the same season?

George Blanda? Nevermind...
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Casey Candaele?  I don't think it ever happened but I remember him saying he hoped to play all postions in one game before he retired.

Ron Brand?

Ron played several other positions besides catcher including 2B and OF ala Biggio, but he never pitched.

No, the player who did it was not primarily a catcher.

This is one that I KNOW I know.  Alas, had to look it up to find the answer though...

No, not .  The player in question did appear in 13 games as a catcher for Houston and a total of 30 as a catcher in his career.

Was looking at rosters and I see it too. I am disqualified. It's the Leon McFadden era though.

OK, it was Marty Martinez in the late 60's and early '70's.  Enthusiasm waning?

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Pettitte.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy
