Berkman suffers setback
« on: March 30, 2010, 04:40:50 pm »
Oh boy.

Berkman, who had surgery March 13 to clean out loose cartilage, was in good spirits at the batting cage prior to Tuesday's game and -- prior to running -- said he thought there was a 70 percent chance he would be ready for Opening Day. He's not as hopeful now.

"When I tried to run, I just couldn't do it," he said. "They're going to back me down for a few days and see what happens."

Mother. Fuck.

I'm still standing by that 90-win prediction.

I gather the feeling all along was that Berkman was DL bound, so I suspect that this is not revelatory news to the organization.  They'll probably have to play without Berkman for most of the month of April and go with Blum at first base primarily (and maybe Keppinger as well).  Ahum... now batting third for your Houston Astros:

I think they're going to take a look at CJ at 1b.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I think they expect Manzella back tomorrow, in light duty.

We're limping into this season. Geoff Blum at 1B would surrender significant offensive pop, which we need.

He's very close.  He has no problem swinging a bat and fielding a baseball hit directly at him.  It is his lateral movement that is a bit hindered right now as he feels the twinge when he make a sudden cut to his left or right.  He's only days away from being ready to go though.

Look, if we wanted Tejada, we would have kept Tejada.

They'll have to play small ball for a bit which, ironically, is something to which they are better suited, Lee excepted.

Hitters are always notoriously slower to get going in spring than pitchers, so there is that as well.  Houston's chances for winning more than losing in the month of April and May hinge on the pitching and defense moreso than the loss of a bat like Berkman.  They're going to have to win some games with low scores and that means the pitching better do it's part early.

If Berkman is going to be out for any length of time, we might be forced to go get Jermaine Dye to play 1B.

You'd have to clear a spot on the 40-man for him, and if you're going to have to do that, why not just make room for Shelton? I think Dye is well over the hill but still expensive, and I just don't see the point in spending money on a guy like that for this team this year.

I think that you can't overlook the fact that public relations considerations could force McLane's hand. Sticking with Blum at 1B is tantamount to a surrender flag, which will drill ticket sales.

Nah, they'll just say Berkman is a week or two away.

If he only misses four games, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.  As stated earlier, these early game's usually come down to pitching and defence.  This being magnified by facing Linscum and Cain right off the bat.  I'd love to see some good small ball from this team.

I'll take some small ball anytime. I just want us to light up Zito if we get him this time.
