I was thinking more of a bullet proof chest protector. A lot of my umpire buddies used to call winter ball when they were in the minors. It can be dicey in some of those places.

I think the ump may have tripped.  I don't think it matters, though.  Offerman was trying to connect, HARD.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

No doubt.  He's the same piece of shit he's always been.  Just didn't look like enough contact to knock my 7-year old down, much less a grown man.  On the other hand, it may have been a defensive move.  What do you do when you're charged by an angry bear Domincan?

I believe the ump in question, along with Offerman, have confirmed he stumbled when trying to step back from the confrontation.
