Spike and Star of the Year Awards

Okay, we're going to make this very simple.  You get to pick the winner of the 2009 Spike and the 2009 Star Award for the Houston Astros.  You can use any criteria or rational you wish for your choices, however, you only get to make one choice for each category.  Here are the list we've come up with of key performers for the Astros this past campaign, but as always you're allowed to make your own wild card entry if you wish (with rationale for said pick).

If you decide Stretch Suba was the best Star Performer, we probably won't take you seriously.  Just saying.

Here are the candidates for either award:

Hunter Pence
Michael Bourn
Geoff Blum
Carlos Lee
Miguel Tejada
Wandy Rodriquez
Jose Valverde
Sammy Gervacio
Jeff Fullchino

Star - Wandy. Extremely dependable, and a great ERA. Backed by a more dependable offense, he might have had 17-18 wins.

Spike - 1/2 vote to Miggy, 1/2 vote to Bourn. To me, the Spike award should go to somebody who plays damn near every day and puts up great numbers in spite of the nicks and bruises, and comes up with the clutch play that saves a game or ignites the team. Miggy had numerous clutch hits, and I shudder to think how much worse the swoon would have been without his competitive attitude. Bourn seemed to make two or three amazing catches every week, and without him in CF the pitching staff would have been cover-your-eyes bad, plus he became a legitimate lead-off man.

Star:  Bourn - simply the stand-out player of the campaign (such as it was).
Spike:  Tejada - lots of games and lots of hits for a veteran.
