Genuine question by someone who doesn't have a good understanding of what goes on for a pitcher: what is the biggest factor impacting a starting pitcher in these situations between innings pitched and length of the delay?  Since Oswalt has only pitched one inning, is it irrelevant how long the delay or is there a point where they don't trot him out there, or shorten how long they'll let him go, because of a lengthy delay?  I'll listen now...

An error by Larry Wayne on a double play ball left Lee and Miggy on 2nd and 1st and no out in the 4th. An infield single by Pitfall loaded 'em. After a Blum shallow fly couldn't plate Lee, IRod singled to bring him home. Erstad sac fly scored Miggy. Matsui singled to score PENCE!!!

4-1 Astros now in the bottom of the 5th.

It's the length of the delay. The problem is that Ozwalt got warm before the game, throwing how ever many tosses it takes him to get warm (this varies a lot from pitcher to pitcher). Once you cool off, as in a lengthy rain delay, there is a much greater risk of injury if the same pitcher warms up again. Have you ever noticed why pitchers wrap their arms when their team is at bat or where a pitcher wears a jacket on the basepaths? It's to keep the arm warm.

This is a judgment call and often depends upon how the pitcher feels and how the pitching coach and manager feel. In David Cone's perfect game, there was a rain delay, and he went back out there and threw the rest of a nine inning perfect game, but I don't remember how long the delay was.

interesting.  I've definitely noticed pitchers keeping their arm warm in the dugout / wearing a jacket if they are running the bases.  I just didn't appreciate that once you to start to stiffen, warming up again could be problematic.  Thanks for the education!
