Though it's been said, many times, many ways...
« on: December 02, 2008, 09:46:25 am »
Fuck ESPN.

I turned on SportsCenter this morning (always a bad idea). Four, count 'em, four fucking segments on Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg and I had to leave for work after that.  I presume there was a segment on the Texans game, but more likely there was a chalk talk segment about the history of self-inflicted leg wounds in the NFL.  I understand they need to cover the shooting, but it's old news at this point, and aren't highlights more exciting than phone conversations with someone who sounds like they're hanging out in the men's toilet at the Giants training facility?

You missed the halftime spectacular, with Drew Rosenhaus spending 10 minutes talking abour "Plex" without actually commenting on anything.

I had to clean up the scum oozing from my TV after that segment.

That segment confused me greatly, as I was trying to figure out why George Michael was representing Plaxico.

I switched to "Casino" on AMC during the Rosenhaus segment.  Joe Pesci's Nicky is 9 million times classier than than that asshat.

No, George Michael was at the Giants' training facility men's toilet with Sal Paolantonio at the time.  It took two men, a bathroom, and an 10-minute long echoey phone conversation to really give the Plaxico Burress story justice.

I'm quick to bash ESPN, but I really can't blame them in this instance. Two 4-7 teams on a Monday night? The only people who cared to watch were Texans fans, Jags, and fantasy football owners with playoff spots on the line.

Nevertheless, the Texans (especially Andre Johnson) got a lot of positive coverage from the network before and during the game.

I'm proud of their performance last night and very happy for Mario, AJ, and Slaton.

Good job, Texans.

I think the texans are actually very close to a playoff caliber team, but got hit by a trio of dunta being out, ike, and some really crazy losses that knocked them out of the race.

one crazy loss-- shitty defense or stupid interceptions killed the other non-blowout losses.

I don't mind that they didn't give a lot of coverage, but really...four segments of Plaxico Burress in a row, highlighted by a phone conversation, is boring and pointless.  It's almost like Missing White Girl Syndrome.  Maybe it's more like NFL Thug Syndrome.  By the way, I heard this story on the BBC when driving to lunch as well.  I guess I can't escape it.

Having the NFL Network means I don't have to watch ESPN for NFL coverage, which means my NFL Sundays are free of that bloated idiot Chris Berman.

It just kills me that every time he starts doing his commentary about NFL games, the first time he goes "WHOOOOOOOOP!" when someone jukes somebody it makes me smile for 1/2 a second. The next 104 times he does it in a 3 minute segment it makes me want to kill myself.

The ESPN crew's on-air chemistry is atrocious. Eisen, Mariucci, and Deion Sanders on NFLN are fantastic. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Deion has evolved into a very good TV personality. He's funny, honest, and not an idiot.

The lifesize virtual interaction with CGI is pretty damn cool.  The "C'Mon Man!" segment... not so much.

I don't know how you guys can watch ESPN at all.  I was a stay-at-home dad for a bit in 2000-2001, started my morning with it religiously, and then it devolved into the swill we have today.  To me, it's unwatchable.  I'm not your example of knowledge, but I believe you can get more news by osmosis than you can by watching The Worldwide Leader.

It amazes me that Sportscenter was at one point in time the coolest show on TV.  Things have changed a hell of a lot.

I think hubris helped it fail.  They believed their own hype, made all these specials about the history of Sportscenter and how Dan Patrick comes up with catchphrases, and forgot that the show was about highlighting sports, rather than show itself.  Eventually, everything lapses into self-parody.  See Saturday Night Live.

I think that this is spot on. Chris Berman is case numero uno in point. He's a fucking cartoon character today. Back in the day, Berman was a really good sportscaster. When he took on the monicre "Boomer", he went straight to hell.
