Astros sent infielder Mark Saccomanno outright to Triple-A Round Rock.  Doesn't that make him a minor league free agent?

No, it takes him off the 40 man roster and makes him vulnerable to the rule 5 draft.

OK I need some educating here, I guess as once again Duman is right(let the love fest continue).  I sure thought Saccomanno, with six years in the minors(2003-08) would be a free agent if dropped from the 40-man roster. Yet, the Duman and the article on Astros.com indicate he is still under there control.  What am I missing?  I know a guy like Brooks Conrad became a free agent last season after six years in the minors.

Saccomanno has missed quite a bit of time due to injuries. Might that have anything to do with it?

I looked back and Conrad actually had seven years(not six) after last year.  Don't know if that makes a difference.  I am sincerely baffled...

It's bizzaro. A six year free agent actually has seven years.

Wasn't this a change in the last CBA?

Whoever came up with this must have been educated in the Big 10.

The blurb I saw said he passed through waivers before going to RR.  Does that make him Rule 5 exempt?

Nope.  It just means nobody wanted him on their 40-man right now.
