The Astros could use a RH power hitter, and look who is available, Mr. dent the flagpole himself, Richie Sexson. Is he worth $200,000K for three months?

Not sure he is a power hitter anymore (or any kind of hitter, for that mater)...BUT, at that price you aren't taking much of a gamble on the "change of scenery" factor.

I'm no talent scout, but I'm pretty sure that Mr. Sexson is done. They gave him a long leash in Seattle. He's had as much time to prove he can hit as MoBerg did here in Houston.

I was thinking mainly as a RH pinch hitter. Low risk/$$$ is the key here, assuming he has no other offers. He has always picked it up in the 2nd half, and he is 'only' 33 years old.

But that's the thing... he can only play 1b, and you already have Erstad there. Who do you remove from the current 25-man to make him a RH bench player?

Erstad is listed as an OF, not that it matters. Newhan would be about the only choice to get the axe. Why do the Astros need 3 backup middle infielders?

You're looking at it all wrong. Move Pence back to center. Move Berkman back to right. Start SexMachine at first. Like Lidge, all he needs is a change of scenery. With that short porch in left, he's going to hit 50 HRs.

Now if only the Astros could convince Bagwell to come back and play third.

Come on. That's totally unrealistic. Everybody knows Baggy has a bad arm, he can't play third. Now if you put him at 2B though, you could trade Matsui for a #2 starter.

I actually read a reply to a Justice blog that suggested that Lance could play third becuase he was a good athelete. Lee at first and I believe Erstad in left. Now why didn't I think of that.

Mike Squires is prolly the most well known, having played 13 games at the hot corner in 1984. And of course, Mattingly.

first softball game I plyed in about three years I got stuck at third. First friggin batter LACES one at me...the ball caught me. I got stuck there the rest of the season. Talk about gun shy...I would be walking to the car and hear the "ping" of the ball coming off a bat in another game and jump four feet in the air.

On a related note, why don't left-handed throwers ever become catchers?

Is it because all left-handed throwers are groomed for more valuable spots, like power hitter or pitcher?

maybe pitchers, but I don't see where a power hitter in left field/1B/RF is more valuable than a power hitter behind the plat, especially if he is good defensively

I've heard a couple of different reasons. LH thrower with RH batter = more problems throwing. Also, tougher throw to third (across the body).

I think THAT is the reason - although it is not throwing across the body, a right hander does that (or at least in football that is the case...righty throwing back left when moving right), a lefty would have to either spin to throw or throw his whole body to the left in order to get in throwing position...I assume runners would steal third at will with a lefty behind the plate.

I also was recovering from a repeatedly seperated shoulder at the time. My throwing arm was completely dogshit for about 2 years after a mishap on some slippery steps when I tried to catch myself on the railing.

But you've also got right-handed guys like Q who make laser-like snap throws to first. Why wouldn't a lefty's snap throw to third be the same? And a lefty would seem to have an advantage picking up bunts and throwing to first.

In my (limited) experience, I hate taking throws from lefties because the damn ball breaks the wrong way. If you're taking long throws from the outfield, that's not a big deal. But a short (e.g., 60 ft), hard throw that breaks the wrong way at the end is a real nuisance to deal with.

And to the first post.. Why do the Astros need a RH power bat? They favor lefties as much as any team in the NL. Tejada, Lee are considered RH power bats. Berkman is hitting more HR's from the RH side. Pence and Wiggington are mediocre overall but strong vs lefties. RH bat (especially like Sexson) is the very last thing on the Astros list.
