Hope Chacon picks up where Wandy left off.

Does Pujols look smaller to anyone else?  Especially in the face and arms?

Maybe, but I do know that his pic on mlb gameday looks like he's wearing lipstick.

Just picking up the game.  Was Chacon niblling, or simply wild?

Ya know, expertly hidden behind all the Tejada hype has been the steady performance of one J.R. Towles.  Both behind the plate and with the stick, Towles has been rock solid.  I really hope this continues.

It was the camera angle that I saw first.   Right behind home made him look closer.  Still bold move and quick play by Loretta.

Ankiel was half way when Towles threw down.
I have it paused right now, and I don't think he's more than 15 feet off of the bag at the point Towles releases the ball, but the angle makes it hard to tell for sure. Even if he were 20 feet down the line, though, it doesn't seem like a smart play to try that unless you have Bourn speed.

Ball dribbles toward 3rd base off Towles glove.  Runner on 1st breaks for 2nd, Towles fires bullet to Lorretta, Runner on 3rd breaks for home, Lorretta guns home, perfect throw, beats runner by about a foot.

Runners 1st and 3rd, Towles boxed the pitch a bit and it squirted a couple feet in front.  The runner on first broke, Towles threw down, Loretta cut in front, the runner had stopped, Ankiel broke, Loretta's throw was a strike and Towles made the tag easy.

Ball in the dirt... dribbles out in front of Towles... runner on 1st hesitates and then goes for 2nd... Towles throws down and Loretta runs in on the throw, snaps it back home and nails Ankiel, who tried to break on Towles release.

If you've got the last replay angle it was better, from 3rd base side as opposed to the original angle (1st bas side)

So which reporter do you think asked Towles where he would rather hit in the lineup?  What insight is there to possibly be gained by that question, other than to maybe make a controversy.

So which reporter do you think asked Towles where he would rather hit in the lineup?  What insight is there to possibly be gained by that question, other than to maybe make a controversy.

I think the more pertinent question is, "Does walking on your hands make you more adept as a rodeo clown?"
I say smorgasbord!

I doubt the FSN folks put that kind of thought into it.

Good to see Hunter have a successful at-bat.

Even if it resulted from a hanging slider.

I'm blaming these two runs on the announcers. They were going on about Geary not having been scored upon up to this point in the season.  And then there it is, a two-run double.

On the replay, it looked to me like Towles was far enough in front of the plate that there was plenty of room for Pujols simply to tag the plate, but he went ahead and went after Towles anyway. Did anybody else see it that way, or is my dislike of Pujols coloring my judgement?

Hard to feel too bad about 3-6 when the "World Series-bound" Tigers are 0-7.

I had the same thought, and because of my prejudice, give him the benefit of the doubt.   Coming down the line, not looking for the ball, he may have just been being prudent.  Was there anyone behind the plate signalling for him?

I don't know, hard to feel anthing less than bad about 2-3 vs the hated cubs & cardinals.

EDIT:  oh yeah, we won last night

I intensely hate the guy and thought same thing. But yes, someone (the bat boy?) was telling him to slide.

Definitely looked like he went after Towles unnecessarily to me.  I was pretty pissed when I saw the replay.

I really hate it when you walk away for a second and, on returning, see an Astros home run.

Only, it was just the replay from yesterday.

I can't say I'm surprised that Chris Sampson will be the first starter to notch a win, but I am surprised that it takes two times through the rotation to get it.

But if Towles is standing on the infield side of the plate (i.e., not blocking), is there really a reason to take his feet out? I noticed that Towles appeared to give Pujols a "what an asshole" look after the play.

Oh I agree he's a gaping anal fissure and the slide was probably unnecessary, but Towles didn't need to put himself in harm's way, either.

Team is running like the timing belt is shot.  Seems like they've played better then 3-6.  I think it will turn around.  I'm saying they end up 500 for April and take off after that.  Unless Roy is hurt, then all bets are off.

Watched the replay a number of times on the MLB.TV gamecast, and Towles was definitely well enough in front of the plate to indicate IMO that Pujols was purposefully sliding in to Towles to take his legs out from under him.  If this was the case, my question would be was it appropriate (e.g. sliding into a second baseman to break up the double play) or dirty?

Much like the second baseman, taking the catcher down denies the defense a play on the baserunner.  JDs initial comment was only that JR should have had the awareness to step up and out of the way if a play was not possible.  I assume that catchers are coached this way for their own protection but also to prevent additional bases by other baserunners while he is laying on the ground.
