Another Loretta rumor

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

To me the part of the article that made the biggest impression on me was this:

Quote
Inge, who lost his everyday job when the Tigers traded for third baseman Miguel Cabrera, says he began to appreciate Cabrera's hitting genius while watching him in a bunting drill.
Inge says Cabrera's eyes would follow the ball to the bat. He would make contact without blinking, squinting or flinching, then follow the ball off the bat as well.

It just underscores a quote from Pence about how he was told by the veterans last year to focus on the little things, because that is often the difference in games.

Interesting, what jumped out at me was further down:

"I used to be a guy with eight different stances and eight different hand positions. Now I'm down to one. And it took only one session, one 15-minute deal in the batting cage.

"This is the most consistent 3-4 weeks of an approach I've had in my life."

I'll let you guess who that quote is from....
"If you don't read the newspaper you are uninformed, if you do read the newspaper you are misinformed."

"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the principal difference between a dog and a man. "

Even more asinine than this was Rosenthal crediting that hitting instructor for "fixing" A-Rod.

Rosenthal - Dodgers looking at Loretta?

I don't see anywhere in this that the Dodgers are interested, just that Rosenthal thinks he would "fit".

You know, the Astros tried to help Ensberg when they first took a chance on him, paired with Everett as their OD left side.  He wouldn't listen, stuck his hands out over the plate and got sent back to the minors pretty quick.   He developed a reputation as someone who was unteachable.

General Manager Ned Colletti has had discussions with other teams about available infielders but said he would prefer to explore the options on his own roster before turning to the trade market.

"There may be something from the outside," he said. "Right now no one's piqued our interest."

Ned Colletti looking first to internal options would be a drastic change from his previous M.O.

I trust Rosenthal's rumors as far as I can comfortably spit a dead rat.  Are the Dodger fans, as are the Astros fans, in constant need of reassurance that the management is in perpetual motion on the trade front?  I can't gauge his statement, is he downplaying a possible move to give himself more time, or can he tell the fans that they're going with what they have?

he gets his rumors directly from scouts. that does not mean they are accurate, of course.

trade rumor = sportswriter thinks he has identified a team's need + sportswriter thinks he has identified a player on another team who meets need

strong trade rumor = sportswriter thinks he has identified a team's need + sportswriter thinks he has identified a player on another team who meets need + subsequent sportswriter repeats original sportswriter

not entirely. the senior scouts are the first line of negotiating trades, and they talk to each other and to guys like Rosenthal, Stark and Gammons. i have been present when each of those three called my friend looking for info.

He's the source of the Mclane demands Lidge traded rumor.  As you've detailed, he certainly calls scouts, what he does with the information after that is the question.   I can only judge by how accurately he describes what subsequently happens.

That must be where the distinction between credible and made-up trade rumors lies.

i did not mean that scouts are his only sources. we need to remember also that folks sometimes float false rumors to achieve a particular purpose.

Agreed. They're working the phones with underlings in organizations, even some GM's.

I've been hunting around on Dodger sources.  Torre is backing up Colletti, they aren't interested in trading for a fix for a short term problem.  Loretta's name doesn't come up at all.  And when's the last time he played 3d full time?  Rosenthal's speculation isn't repeated anywhere else.

right. putting him in as the answer at 3rd seems very suspect.

Tim Brown, a guy with LA connections, writes a whole article about the Dodgers 3b situation, and doesnt mention Loretta once.  He does however mention Ty Wigginton.  Link
