Is it in his shoulder and upper arm? If so, it might be a stenosis (narrowing of the distance between two vertebrae), which causes a pinched nerve as well as cramping. If it is that, it is painful as shit and requires quite a bit of physical therapy.

IIRC, Carlos Hernandez had a stenosis too.

I remember Wade Miller trying to pitch with a pinch nerve in his neck.  He tried to pitch through the pain and finally had to admit he was hurting.  By that the time they shut him down, he had done some damage to his shoulder by altering his already funky mechanics.  Miller went on to pitch that season, but he was never the same pitcher once he returned, having to ultimately be shut down for good because now his shoulder was barking.

Torn rotator cuff as I remember and the end of his Houston Astros career.

The moral of the story is this: It's hard to admit you're hurting when you're trying to win a job, but you may well damage your career if you don't.  It's a rock and a hard place situation for young pitchers.  Here is hoping they shut him down early enough to keep the problem isolated to his upper arm.

Can someone give a layman's explanation of "a pinched nerve in the triceps."  Is that the area where the nerve is pinched and the pain is felt, or just where the pain is felt, while the nerve is being pinched elsewhere?  If the pinching occurs in the triceps, is it due to muscle inflammation?

I'm neither a physician nor play one on television, and I didn't stay at any hotel last night.

However, I do have personal experience with a pinched nerve in my upper throwing arm, albeit my deltoids than my triceps like Paulino. In my situation, the pinched nerve was occurring in vertebrae c5 and c6, not where it was hurting. So it could well be in his spine.

Paulino's indication that it'll take him three months to recover is consistent with my injury, and it took some very serious daily physical therapy (I took to calling the therapists terrorists because it hurt) for four months to recover.

I think what Paulino is saying is that he might be throwing in 2 months and it will take another month or 2 to get back in shape(?)  Even that seems optimistic.

Paulino was the pitcher I was most looking forward to watch pitch during the first half of the season.
