Is the pitching camp outside of the scope of his personal services contract? I ask because it seems odd that it's an invitation, rather than an obligation. Clearly, I have no fucking idea how these things work, and am trying to better myself through peer education.
That contract has not been finalized or signed. So this really is an invitation from the Astros and not part of any contract. Don't know how much they're paying him to do this.

Clemens has participated in the camp every year, and it was understood that the Rocket would continue to do so as part of the 10-year personal services contract he signed four years ago. The contract was to go into effect when Clemens officially retired, which he has not done yet.

His agent, Randy Hendricks, recently notified McLane that Clemens was ready to begin the personal-services contract, but Clemens has not yet retired.
McLane said he supports Clemens and Pettitte, calling them "great Astros." But regarding the personal-services contract, McLane kept it vague.
"We have to remember that these were accusations that were made," McLane said, referring to the Mitchell report. "Some investigation is going to have to be done.
"The 10-year personal-services agreement would not be implemented until [Clemens] decided his career was done. We haven't sat down with [Clemens' agent] Randy [Hendricks] and Roger. They had not made up their mind that his career was finished. A lot needs to be done in the future. We need to see what the next steps are going to be about."
