More analysis of the Bourn trade
« on: November 26, 2007, 09:47:28 am »
This time from Bill Giles Chairman of the Phillies.  He's being quizzed by Chris Freind, a reporter for the Bulletin, "Philadelphia's family newspaper".

Giles: (on Costanzo) We didn't think that highly of him. We did when we drafted him, but he hasn't progressed either defensively or in making contact. But he definitely has power---a lot of power. And he might develop, but we didn't think he was going to be an everyday third baseman. ...the guy we're going to miss in that trade is Michael Bourne. I think he's going to be a really fine player. His speed, his defensive capabilities...if he can hit .260, .270, he's going to be a real force. We really didn't want to trade him, but we just desperately needed pitching. link

If only they could spell Bourn's last name correctly.

Russell Sandman & Evan Rosen of Creativesports (yeah those guys) filed this report on Sunday,

"... in our estimation Costanzo is the central figure Houston targeted in the deal. ... In fact, with uber-utility veterans Ty Wigginton and Mike Lamb sharing time at the hot corner for the Astros in 2008, it would surprise nobody at the Report if Costanzo was the recipient of an earlier than anticipated call to the majors, should the parent club falter."

Its amazing people get paid to do this.  I can put together more accurate info working part-time while on a lunch break from my normal job.

Apropos of turds, the baseball gurus over at AD are discussing the feasability of moving Scott to platoon at 3rd with Wigginton.  I can't make this shit up.

The advent of blogs has contributed to the trash reporting like that done by creativesports in discussing the trade.   You have to learn to filter out the good from the bad.

Though what they wrote is crap, it does bring up a good point.  Costanzo bears watching in RR next year.  It would be nice to hear from knowledgeable folks outside the org what he looks like defensively and in the batter's box.

If Bagwell could do it, why not Scott?

Also, with his limited mobility, wouldn't Carlos Lee be ideal behind the plate?
