Have they always announced these awards (NL & AL) on the same day? Seems like they used to announce them a day apart, but maybe my memory fails me.

Hmm, that's odd.  I figured the Rockies' postseason success and the Brewers' late season collapse would give Tulowitzki the edge.  Guess I figured wrong-

Ryan Braun...

The votes are cast before the postseason.

As great as Tulowitzki was, it is hard to beat out the offensive numbers Braun put up.  He became the #3 in front of Fielder and thrived there.

Just goes to show, writers only care about offensive stats though, as Braun was still pretty terrible with the glove, and Tulo was pretty good.

Not to mention, Braun made more of a splash where as Tulowitzki was kind of steady all the way through the year.  It was only then that you looked at his numbers and went... "Wow, that is pretty good for a Rookie SS!"

tulowitzki got robbed.  braun gave back many of the runs he produced with lousy defense.  tulo had a defensive season for the ages at SS, plus very solid offense.  he helped his team win more than braun did.

Not to get off topic but is anyone as upset with Pedroia getting the AL ROTY? If you ask me Brian Bannister got robbed after having an outstanding quiet year as a  the Royals' ace (forget Meche) yet writers continue to ride the Boston bandwagon

Batting almost always wins against pitching in these things.  And big market will always win against anyone else, especially if big market is on the East Coast.  More media there, more opportunities for them to actually watch/follow the player...  Just the way of the world.

BTW, I was following Bannister when he went to KC, because I heard alot of good things when he was just on the cusp of being up with the Mets in 06.  Very nice young starter.

How many players in the big Northeastern media markets have one the ROY the last 20 seasons?

I guess it depends on if you consider only big NorthEastern cities, ie Bos/NYM.  But my comment was more for East coast in general.  But Bos and NY have to have Rookies worth of consideration, if so, they ussually win I think.  Just they don't tend to have alot of rookies period.

NL ROY: Hanley Ramirez, 2006 (Fla), Ryan Howard, 2005 (Phi), Jason Bay, 2004 (Pit), Dontrelle Willis, 2003 (Fla, Should have been Webb in Ari), Rafael Furcal, 2000 (Atl), Scott Rolen, 1997 (Phi), David Justice, 1990 (Atl).

The Dodgers won it each year from 92-96.  So that is big market West Coast.

AL ROY, other than this year, has been all over the place.  Other than Nomar and Jeter in back-to-back years, it is mostly made up of A's, Twins and Royals.  But when you consider that is what those 3 clubs do, build up young talent and then either trade it away or let them go for big draft pick compensation, that is not very surprising.

So while i am proven wrong in AL ROY, and big market in NL ROY.  I still hold that if you have two deserving candidates, chances are it will lean heavily to East Coast teams and/or the Big City teams.

Yes, those powerhouse baseball markets of Pittsburgh and Florida really help prove the point.

I agree, it isn't about BIG so much in ROY, although I would believe that when they have someone battling for ROY, they do well.  Just they don't have many people in the running.

But it does show an Eastern bias in the NL, which does fit with my comment:

So while ROY might not always go to big market, it does tend to go to East coast more often than not in the NL.  In the AL it goes to the "farm" teams of Minn, Oak and KC.  Just from sheer volume, is my guess.

If you break teams down by divisions, the ROY award since 1987 has gone to a player in the :

NL East 6 times
NL Central 8 times
NL West 7 times

(This where they are currently ignoring division realignment).   This is improbably even in distribution.

He is indeed, I thought he might get points for being a guy the Mets gave up on then went on to succeed and voting ROTY mashes it in the face of the Mets front office morons, we all know how much the media loves to pile on. Funny though how hitting always wins out in awards yet offseasons always focus around teams needing pitching.

Defense should count for something, but apparently it did not.
