Yesterday, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Melvin said he wouldn't reveal specific offers he makes this off-season but confirmed he put in a bid to retain free-agent closer Francisco Cordero.

Cordero, 32, is believed to be seeking at least $40 million over four years but Melvin might not be willing to go that high. Link

I think that should eliminate the Astros and I'm glad.  He's not worth that because he's far from a sure thing.  I'd rather limp through next year with the young guys or someone else they bring in.  It wasn't so very long ago that he was a throw-in by the Rangers in the Carlos Lee trade.

I am amazed that prices closers are getting.  It began with the 7 million the Tigers gave Todd Jones who is old and broke down.  I don't think closer is that specialized of a skill as evidenced by the number of new closers who come out of know where every year and do well.

Althought I'm not a complete Billy Beane follower, I like his philosophy of growing closers and trading them to teams for more value than they're actually worth.  This is different, of course, but I don't see the gap between what the Astros have and what Cordero brings as worth the difference in cash-money.

middle relief is cheaper and just as important, how many game are won and lost in the 6th and 7th?

The best closers in baseball sometimes are not among MLB's Top 5 Saves leaders.   Saves leaders often have managers who help them get saves ... holding the closer in a 4 run game until 2 runners reach, 1 out saves with a 5 run lead, etc.  Give me a guy like Papelbon who can get a 5-out save with 2 on in the 8th in a one run game. 

Pass on Cordero at that price.

only is a saves leader gets saves like that. i doubt many top closers do. those are Trever Miller saves.

Thought I'd share this nugget.  I read the chat log for Keith Law over at ESPN (void related) and he's indicating Houston is the leader for Cordero.  Says Houston will also overpay to get him. 

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe him.  Just thought I'd share.

I think Cordero will stay with Milwaukee who will be forced to overpay.  I firmly believe it's Qualls to start the season if someone else does not beat him out in spring training.  Sarfate or Paulino is the only two I can think of that have a chance to do that.

I'm betting that Albers is moved to the pen.  However, that depends on Houston having better options (Oswalt, Backe, Sampson, Wandy, Woody, Patton etc...)  to start and those options don't falter in ST.

I keep reading that Haren/Blanton are available...either would be nice...Not that Burke has done anything to say he'd be better than Mark Ellis, but I wonder if he any value to the A's?  Just a thought...nice to fantasize I guess.

ETA...obviously my hope would be for Burke to be a small piece of any deal with Oakland.  Big time prospects (starting with Patton I'm sure) would have to be added and I'm not sure we have enough to make such a deal.

I saw his fastball get *very* straight sometimes with the Nats.  Hitters would be surprised by it and react late.  MLB hitters don't remain surprised for very long.  He could be #2 in a million and turn out to be the next Wagner but my guess is he'll be a non-factor by the end of that nice 4-year contract.
