Who was it?

"Tal is going to stay more engaged than he has been the last few years," McLane said. "And so he is certainly going to work directly with Ed on a day-to-day basis. That puts, I think, an unbeatable team together."

"At least one of the 10 other GM candidates among the Astros interviewed weren't thrilled with such an arrangement."

Watson?

I would say that's a safe bet.  There were only a couple of guys interviewed who don't have children named after Tal and he's one of them.
Crazy Joe McCluskey was fucking nuts.  It's why they called him Crazy Joe.

I wouldn't think it's normal when the gm has prior experience.  In places where there is a first time gm it's not uncommon.  Going by that article, the only reason Tal didn't get the job is because he said no.

Dan Evans wanted to run his own show.  He's your guy.

Just curious if you or anyone around here knows anything about Watson's actual chance.  Was he viewed as less capable than the others, less liked by Tal, less likely to submit to Drayton.  Something else?

I wonder if he was just a minority interviewee, inserted to satisfy MLB?

I got the feeling, from a quote pravata provided, I thought, that he let the Astros know he wasn't interested after the interview.

Here it is: http://www.orangewhoopass.com/forums/index.php?topic=103820.0

"“I have a very good job now. I probably have a more powerful job and do more for baseball than I would being the GM for the Astros, but I wanted to convey to him I wanted to do this job and was healthy and had the passion.”

After rereading that, I changed my mind. I read it as Watson already having a good job, but I now think he meant to say he would give it up to go back to the Astros.
