Most Online Ever: 250 (Yesterday at 09:11:04 PM)

What was going on at 9:11 p.m. last night that we had 250 people online? Did Nolan Ryan come out of retirement? Dr. Andrews come up with a medical miracle for Bagwell?

If I had to guess, I'd say lurking Brewers fans. They're going to start coming out of the woodwork from coast to coast if they win the division.

The Brewers are the class of the division... right now. But the Cubs are actually more scarier and on balance, perhaps a better team. Yeah, I know... it's the Cubs, how can you say that? Well, because as much as I like the Brew Crew, the inexperience, the lack of a true defense on this team and what I think perhaps will be a blowout waiting to happen for them (Coco Cordero) in the bullpen will not bode well for the team. Most telling is the lack of really solid defense on this team. The pitchers are good enough to cover for some of the weakness, but overall, not an impressive defensive team the Brewers put out there. The pennant stretch and even the playoffs will seperate the contenders from the pretenders as it were.

I'm thinking whoever comes out of the NL Central is one and done in the playoffs. Being the one-eyed king of the land of the blind is not entirely noteworthy in the grand scheme of things. St. Louis and Houston took the season off this year and good to see Chicago and Milwaukee stepping up to fill the void.

I'd much rather have it be Pittsburgh and Milwaukee... fuck the Cubs. Even if Vagina is no longer with them.

This weekend, the Cubs and Brewers will square off. That will be a very strong series. I know it's not popular to talk about the Cubs this way, but they will make a run at the young Brew Crew and we shall see how well the Milwaukee nine hold up when that happens.

The Brewers would not and should not fear the Mets, Dodgers, or D'Backs. The whole NL is a crapfest this year. And it is quite telling that the Astros can't even stay afloat in such a weak year.

I agree. They're very strong in the lineup and have some depth. They're getting very good pitching, and if that holds up, no one will be able to catch them in our sucky div., imo.

Piling on here, but I thought the same as well. The only problem they may have is sporadic sloppy play. But if they keep this up, they are going to be a pain in the ass for years to come. Oh well, oddly enough, as a kid I liked the Brewers. But then they moved to the NL. Rat-friggin-bastards. The AL died that day, for me, and so did my interest in the Brewers.

I would. And I never said they weren't good (just in case I am being misrepresented here). I said they play some sloppy defense and are inexperienced (ie: young). I also think Coco Cordero will come back to earth sometime this year and blow up on them. Based on those three things, I find their chances of taking the division less than a lock. If they do, I find their chances of being the 2007 version of the St. Louis Cardinals run in 2006 highly unlikely.

If that's true, then you can bet Doug Melvin knows it and will remedy that situation. I expect the Brewers to take the Central in a runaway.

Absolutely. The veteran presence in that dugout includes the following:

Jeff Suppan
Greg Counsell
Damian Miller (?)

Three guys who have been to the World Series and won it all. Plus you have good veterans like Geoff Jenkins and to a lesser extent Ben Sheets. But pressure makes a player in these situation. Last year, when the Brew Crew had a chance to play some meaningful games late in the season against the St. Louis Cardinals, they were unable to hold leads late and help decide the NL Central. Playing loose is one thing, but when the situation is now that you're playing for your own playoff aspiring life, you better do much better than they did last year down the stretch. Hence why I think they'll need some more help veteran presence-wise in order to win down the stretch and on into the playoffs. When Jeff Conine joined the Florida Marlins down the stretch in 2003, he helped tremendously the young talented group of Marlins along with such guys as Pudge Rodriquez.

If the Brew Crew is to win and hold off the Cubs and make hay in the playoffs, they will have to tighten up that defense, make a move or two for more veteran presence on the team and maybe one more reliever with playoff experience to help them out. But if they stand pat, I think they will be making a huge mistake and hurt their chances. IMHO of course.

They remind me of the 03 Marlins. Add one stable veteran guy either on the bench or in the outfield (beyond Jenkins, someone to replace Mench for instance) and you have a very solid team. Might an Andruw Jones or Torii Hunter help them? Or another bat/defensive player in CF (move Bill Hall to left). It would absolutely make them a solid team. Ride it out the way it is constructed now is asking for a swoon IMHO.

The Brewers may win the division, although I would not count out the Cubs or even Co-ards just yet.

Milwaukee has won some games lately, and look like a juggernaut, but I can't put out of my mind the 5-13 meltdown the last half of May, when they were playing teams like the Phillies and Braves and Dodgers, by the way the teams they may face in the NLDS if they do manage to win the Central.

I can't imagine them making it even to the NLCS. I agree the upcoming series with Chicago will be illuminating.

The pennant drive and eventually the playoffs are about pitching and defense rising up to the forefront and just enough offense being vital to the equation. Meaning, you won't be facing pitching that will allow you to easily score 9 runs in the 7th inning. You have to be battle tested to score one run from second base with two outs late in the game with the score in the 2 or 3 runs maximum. Sure there are exceptions to everything and you'll get some high scoring games in the playoffs. But by and large, these kids will be tested in the execution of the fundamentals of the game when the meaningful games come into play. Can they make the tough defensive stops for their pitcher, can their reliever corps shut down a rally, can they score a man from second base by using hit and runs or bunts correctly? I love to see this free spirited bunch of Brewers play ball right now, but this is far from the type of games they'll be playing when it matters.

This weekend will give them a big boost towards understanding how to win in pressure games by doing what is right and necessary (the proverbial "staying within yourself") in baseball and not just relying on a beat up bullpen to hand you a game or two.
