Garner on the radio
« on: May 08, 2007, 09:35:05 am »
Anybody just hear Garner on Mike and Mike on ESPN radio about an hour ago? According to a friend of mine who heard it, he said basically he loves Roger, the fact is Roger loves the spotlight of the whole chase for his services and that going to NY is great for him so he can be on that stage as a savior, which he relishes. He also mentioned that Roger not traveling with the team started to become a factor with the team last year for the first time. Before that, the guys accepted that he made his arrangement since he was going to retire so he could be with his kids, etc. but last year for the first time, he would be gone and then suddenly he would be on TV doing an appearance or playing in a golf tournament and the rest of the team was starting to get annoyed. Garner thought the traveling thing might be a problem with the Yankees.

good for the rest of the team. that explains the collective "ho hum" from the Astros locker room.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

No kidding.  Can you imagine playing with someone like that?  You're out there busting your ass and your highest-paid teammate is off playing golf at a tournament.

I can't wait for some Yankee to rip Roger in the NY press in September when they're 12 games out.

Probably more so after season's end when they missed the playoffs by 1.5 games.  Maybe a couple of starts by Roger in May might have helped.  The first time around, he was un-retiring; the second time he was showboating and wringing money from the club.

It's no surprise he's with the Yankees, not just for all the reasons that have been extolled in here, but also because the Yankees have 357 starting pitchers on the DL.  I'm sure Team Bastard smelled the desperation down the telephone.

In hindsight, the lack of run support that seemed to plague DQ is kind of humorous.  "Hey dickwad... you don't want to be a part of the team?  Then we're not going to score you any runs!"

I'm sure it doesn't, but wouldn't it be interesting if it turned out that had something to do with it.  Giving just a little less effort for the teammate who gave a little less to begin with.

A baseball team is a pretty tight nit group, so I could see that being the case, although I doubt any of them felt Roger wasn't giving his best when he was there, but I am sure it did make them question his dedication to the "group" when he wasn't there to support someone else when they were doing their thing.

I am sure it is nothing they will say outloud, but I am sure alot of them are happy that he isn't comming back, not that he wouldn't have helped on the field, but that he seemed more like a "hired-gun" than a part of the team.

Winning cures all ills.  The frantic finish in 2004/2005 made all the special perks tolerable.  If the RedSox continue to hold onto 1st place, shit will hit the fan.
You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you. Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here, close. You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?

Garner is quoted as saying the following (in paraphrase):

"First year, no problem because our guys pretty much ignored it.  Second year, the same.  Third year.... hmmmm... there was some talk that I started to hear and it was a small problem, but not enough to worry about.  But I believe eventually it would become a distraction."

There is some grumblings that privately the Hendricks were told that the Astros were going to recind some of the special privileges this year.  However, I am not sure how true that was, they really never got a chance to negotiate.

Beltran revisited.

Rog had no plans to stay here.  Everyone knew it.

Hired gun is right. I think Clemens gives a team his all when he's on the mound, and I think he sincerely wants whatever team he's on to win, but beyond that, it's all about him. It's not because he has any particular loyalty to the city, the players here, McLane, the fans, etc. It's because that's where he could cut the best deal and get the most limelight. With the novelty worn off and Steinbrenner's deep pockets, New York is the best place for that now. Maybe Boston will be that place next season. Who knows? But it's not like feeling any particular bond or connection with anything other than his own ego and the drama and publicity necessary to stroke it, wherever that may take him.

I don't know if Boston will ever REALLY be in the mix.  Roger has often said he wants to go in the Hall as a Yankee, not a Red Sock (Sox?).  He probably wants to win another WS for the Yanks after a drought (for them), be the big  hero, and convince the powers that be to let him wear the NY cap in the Hall.
