Okay I admit it, I was wrong..
« on: May 04, 2007, 08:00:30 am »
I have been a little critical (okay alot) of Wandy's pitching in the past.  He has looked very good in 5/6 starts this year.  Last night he was outstanding.  He was using both sides of the plate very effectively and that back door curve was excellent.  I hope he has turned to corner and continues to throw like this.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Wandy's still winless with a losing streak of eight and a lifetime ERA of around 5.5. I've been critical of him as well. The umpire was giving him that outside corner call last night that I think he can't live without.

He should have at least three wins this year.  And I am not basing my assessment on one game; I am basing it on 6.  It looks like to me that Wandy might have finally figured it out.  In the past, he would get a guy on and he would begin pressing.  Last night he was not loosing it when things weren’t going his way.  We shall see.  I tell you one thing, I do not cringe any longer when I see his name come up in the rotation.

What does this have to do with anything?  This year is this year and he is doing his job and doing it well.  He's exceeding expectations and performing exactly like most had hoped but suspected was unable to.  To say he's "winless" implies he 1) has control over that and 2) is somehow his fault and ignores the true issues that this team has.

The umpire was giving him that outside corner call last night that I think he can't live without.

3rd time this year the ump for that particular game has done so.  This is typical of pitchers that have been around for a while as the umps get used to pitchers and pitchers get used to umps.  Wandy is maturing and the team (and us fans) are benefitting.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

I still do cringe. But he should have at least two wins in my view. Vulture Qualls scooped him last night.

Seems to me in the past any little setback...like Juniors solo shot in the fist inning...would upset Wandy and he would lose focus. Maybe this is his maturation process as a pitcher where he now stays calm and pitches through it. He has pitched very well this year, and if he keeps it up the wins will come.

Or something.

He lost it in the 7th when he melted down over the double off the wall.  It was late enough in the game so as not to affect the outcome, but this fragility has been a long-term problem for Wandy.  When his head's in the game, he looks very good.  Even Griffey's homer sounded like he'd hit a duck, but he's steroided enough to force it out in the corner.

Could it be that he ran out of gas, instead of lost it.  He got himself out of the inning.

I give him props for getting the last guy after Wallace came out to visit.
