« on: November 25, 2019, 11:35:17 am »
I for one think it's swell that MLB is approaching these allegations with the seriousness they deserve in order to protect the integrity of the game, unlike two decades ago when MLB swept the steroids scandal under the rug since all the home runs helped people forget that Bud Selig presided over the first World Series cancelation in 90 years.
Not sure any of this has fuckall to do with the integrity of the game.

I'm in the camp that believes they were using electronics.

Go fuck yourself.  Your assumption is based on nothing other than the bullshit spewing from a bunch of anti-Astros hacks pretending to be journalists.  There's no evidence to support the accusation.  This team deserves your support; not to be thrown under the bus.

I know nothing about Crane Jr other than he's in his mid-30's... where'd he go to school, where'd he work afterwards?  Not that it's a be-all-end-all, but it's interesting to know.

If you're looking for something in his resume to support this move, you won't find it.

I felt more certain the '98 team was going to win it all than I did this '19 team.  For me, the '98 outcome was truly a shocker and I'm still not sure I've fully recovered from Game 6 in '86.  I so badly wanted the World Series in '98 for Biggio and Bagwell, almost as if they were my own children.  Then there was NLDS Game 3 in '99.

That was absolutely bizarre. Cole looked like he was in a hostage video.

There's some smart people on this board; I'm surprised few see the obvious.  The post-game actions and comments by Cole seemed out of character because they were/are.  What you witnessed last night was the spirit of Scott Boras in Cole's body.  Cole was carefully coached by Boras -- the comments, hat, etc. -- all part of the act.  It was a message to the marketplace that Team Cole isn't fucking around.

Talk Zone / Re: Cole and Game 5
« on: October 28, 2019, 02:44:07 pm »
It isn't just about Cole.  He has the opportunity to set a new benchmark for contracts.  The contract he signs will impact the entire market this year and in years to come.  Especially after last off-season, there will be a lot of talk about how it is his duty to the rest of the players to maximize his contract.  He may well choose to ignore that, but you know that both Boras and MLBPA will be campaigning for him to view it that way.

Best post on the issue yet.  This is the reality and will certainly be a significant factor as Cole weighs his options.  Boras and the union have convinced many players to make decisions which were not necessarily the desire, or in the best interest of, the subject player.

Also, knowing what pitch was coming did nothing for Correa. He had a horrible AB.

Yep, as did Reddick.  Reddick knew the fastball was coming and swung and missed 3 of 'em.

Talk Zone / Re: Tipping pitches
« on: October 11, 2019, 10:57:08 am »
Bregman's at bat in the first inning was interesting.  He clearly knew which pitch was coming.  He absolutely spit on the first pitch curveball, took a vicious hack at the second pitch fastball, then decides the 1-1 curveball is his pitch and strokes it to the gap for a double.  A fine piece of hitting by Bregman.

17
Did Cintron discover the tell from video, prior to the game? Or did he catch it in the lead off Springer at bat?

Degenerative disc disease, which ultimately led to 2 surgeries by a top neurosurgeon, ended my playing days.  Frankly, I am amazed any time I hear of a player in the majors recovering and returning to play the game at the level required to stay in the game.  I am not at all optimistic about Correa's career.

Wow.  You need to watch it again.  (it's the entire debate and a slow load. Everything is in the last minute) You were completely wrong.  It was far less than what you said.  Biden complimented her several times.  He didn't lecture.  You can hear her saying "thank you."  They then shake hands with Ifill.  Then they both greet their respective families.  Biden does make the move toward Palin's family, but man your bias showed here.  Todd Palin went to her side, just as Biden's wife went to his.  In fact, at the end, you can see one of her kids bringing the baby on stage.  Palin did not take the baby right away.  Then the video stops.

Yep, I watched it live last night and when I read pravata's take, it seemed very different from what I remember.  The video is a clear reminder that things did, in fact, transpire very differently from pravata's recount.

Like most of what you write here, your take on this was complete bullshit, pravata.

Maybe, but I believe Valverde is in the same contract situation as is Lidge.  Players who embarass McLane dont stay long, and he is embarassed by booing.  Also, it is well documented that he pays attention to, and worse, acts on, fans' reactions

Remember, on the occasion of firing Purpura and Garner,

"This was two years in the process," McLane said. "I've observed things, watched things, talked to literally hundreds of people as I go through. I went through the stands yesterday, and every game. I ask people, 'What do you think?' It's amazing what people will tell you. It's the impact others had on me, over a period of time."

The booing is what got Lidge traded in the first place.
What a load of horseshit.  The booing of Lidge, or any player with very few exceptions, is a classless act.  That being said, Lidge's performance got Lidge traded.  Don't blame the fans.

I'd also add that the Houston Astros gave Lidge a much longer leash than the vast majority of clubs would give a closer and have no doubt that the Phillies organization, and their fans, will not be nearly as kind when Lidge starts getting lit up there.

Lidge is the reason Lidge is no longer an Astro.

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral sponsors and hosts Houston's largest Greek festival, which is the one in October.  St. Basil, a separate Greek church on the west side, hosts their own festival in May.  It's a smaller affair than the October festival, but it's still a lot of fun and an opportunity to get some good Greek food.

Talk Zone / Re: "With eyes on Prior"
« on: December 21, 2007, 12:06:59 am »
The Houston Chronicle is reporting that both Prior and Benson are giving serious consideration to Houston.  In the case of Prior, he wants to pitch in San Diego, who already turned down an opportunity to obtain Prior in a trade with the Cubs.  One look at the medical records made them really concerned that they would be giving up a player for a pitcher who may not pitch at all in the majors.

The Padres have 2 million dollars more to spend and are said to be holding that for other needs so any deal Prior wants from the Padres will have to be a very low contract, probably a league minimum or even a minor league contract.

Houston is offering a solid one year contract and a major league roster spot.  It's up to Prior to decide at this point:

Fingers crossed.  Man, it would be great if they could get both of these deals done.

We don't need a wonderful strikeout artist ace as our number 2 which i guess Prior could fall into place as being, we need someone that can eat up innings and have a decent era 3.50 - 4.50. Benson could do that for us and potentially cost less (depending on priors performance) which is better imo. I also doubt Prior would want to sign here.

How does all this translate into Prior being a bitch?

Even better than Bistro Provence on Memorial is Bistro Le Cep, Westheimer near Kirkwood.

Yes, I eat at Le Cep frequently.  A lot of the items on the menu are extremely heavy though; much heavier than the usual French country.  You can get a pretty good deal at Le Cep on Sunday evenings with their all-inclusive dinner special.

I prefer the style of food at Provence, but both are excellent.

But trust me.  It's worth the trip and the price.  Reservations and coat/tie required.  Yes...in Humble, Texas.

Well it's more than just taking one of his wife's vicodin pills here.  He was using what has been classified, right or wrong, by almost every athletic governing body out there to be a performance enhancing drug.

Yes, a "performance enhancing drug" that MLB, at the time, decided not to ban its players from taking.

Vicodin would be worse, from a non-baseball perspective, as it is a controlled substance.

Taking HGH without a legit prescription WAS against baseball rules at the time.

This is such a bullshit Mickey Mouse position.  First, it has not been established whether he had a prescription or not.  Second, if taking HGH without a prescription was against the rules, then so is taking ANY pharmaceutical without a prescription, including muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatory meds, which circulate clubhouses like a bowl of Life Savers.  Finally, I haven't been able to find any evidence to corroborate your position that taking any pharmaceutical without a prescription is a violation of MLB rules, and you have been unable to provide any.  Can anyone provide the text of this rule?

The 1998 Houston Astros were the prohibited NL favorite to go to the World Series.  Larry Dierker got rid of Brad Ausmus that off-season because he was tired of openly having his decisions questioned by Brad in the clubhouse.  Dierker managed to get rid of Ausmus out of spite and Bagwell let them know in an indirect way (and then later so did Mike Hampton in a very direct way) that this was bullshit.

This year's Houston Astros are hardly prohibited favorites to be the NL rep in the World Series.
Ausmus also remains an integral part of this team.  He wasn't shipped out this time.

As a purely legally matter, the term "controlled substance" refers to those substances so designated in a state or federal Controlled Substances Act. It is not a generalized term for all substances for which a prescription is required for dispensation.

Nope, no free pass for Andy.  If he wasn't smart enough to do it the right way, he deserves the consequences.

My original point was that it would have been easy for AP to have legally obtained HGH, if he in fact did not; much easier than steroids, which are easy enough to get legally and they are in fact "controlled substances."

On a side note, if Andy never had a prescription for HGH, to me, it makes his story more believable.  If Andy would have been a long-term (months) user of HGH, which is what would have been necessary to truly give him an "edge," IMO, he would have obtained a prescription.  As I said earlier, there are many benefits to doing it the right way, other than legalities.

I believe it happened generally like he described - he used it for a few days and for whatever reason, didn't like it, didn't feel it was working, and he stopped.  Not uncommon at all.

No, just you.

Do you dispute Rick Collins' comments?  If not, then you agree with me.

It appears to me that you fail to recognize that there is a class of scheduled drugs that the federal government refers to as "controlled substances."  HGH does not fall in this category; anabolic steroids do.

I think you are trying to muddy the water by asserting that all pharmaceuticals are "controlled" by the federal government (i.e. it's against the law to dispense without a prescription).  This very general use of the word "controlled" is not to be confused with the DEA's category of "controlled substances," which is very specific.  But by all other accounts you are an intelligent guy, so I assume you understand this.

Those are the substances regulated under the Controlled Substances Act.  HGH is regulated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and under the Anabolic Steroid Control Act.  Furthermore, you should probably read this disclaimer at the top of your own reference:

"This document is a general reference and not a comprehensive list."

HH, you know just enough about this subject to be dangerous.

A quick Google search turned up this link, which is a piece written by Rick Collins, who is probably the most notable attorney in the area of PED's:

http://www.isteroids.com/steroids/Growth%2520Hormone%2520Laws.html

Also, in response to the disclaimer, you can bet your ass that the feds wouldn't have forgot to include HGH, if it was indeed a controlled substance.

So?  It's still illegal to do so and still againt baseball rules.

It is not illegal for the patient.  Once the patient has the prescription, whether it was written as indicated or off label, the patient has the right to possess and use the prescribed HGH.  If it's an off label script, the doctor runs the legal risk, not the patient.  And this would not have violated any baseball rule in 2002.

I clearly said maybe he didn't have a prescription.  It is just hard for me to believe that someone as high profile as Pettitte would have been that stupid, considering how easy it is/was to get a prescription.

Anyone have a link to the full text of the prepared statement released by AP's agents?

118
Talk Zone / Re: Pettitte's admission...........
« on: December 16, 2007, 06:29:35 pm »
No it's not.  It's determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The Secretary of Health and Human Services does not examine nor diagnose patients.  The physician determines whether or not the patient's problem falls within the guidelines of the Secretary of Health and Human Services.  Trust me, it is not hard to fall within the guidelines.  "Surgery" and "trauma" are very broad terms.

Also, even though doctors run the risk of getting their hand slapped, many doctors still write off label prescriptions for HGH; it was even more common 5 years ago.

All of this being said, it has not been reported if Pettitte claims he had a prescription or not.  In this current climate, I wouldn't be surprised if he's indicated that he did and it simply isn't being reported.  Or maybe he didn't.  If he didn't, he's very foolish, but nobody ever said ballplayers were the sharpest tools in the shed.

119
Talk Zone / Re: Pettitte's admission...........
« on: December 16, 2007, 03:29:25 pm »
Not only does use of HGH require a prescription, but it requires recognized use.

"Recognized use" is determined by the physician.  The patient does not bear the burden of making sure the physician made the correct determination.

Also, according to Lilly's Humatrope (HGH) site, since 1996, it has been FDA approved for "patients who have growth hormone deficiency, either alone or accompanied by multiple hormone deficiencies (hypopituitarism), as a result of hypothalamic disease, pituitary disease, surgery, radiation therapy, or trauma."

http://www.humatrope.com/adult_patients/about_humatrope.jsp?reqNavId=2

That's pretty damn broad.

a sore elbow is not a recognized use of HGH.  No matter how Pettitte spins it, it's BS.

Pettitte could very well have received a valid prescription for HGH in 2002.

Talk Zone / Re: Clemens in the Mitchell Report

It was not stated whether or not he had a legitimate prescription, but it is implied that he did not.  If he had one, it would probably go a lot farther if he simply said so, rather than the "IF it were an error in judgement..." BS.

Why do you think it is implied that he did not?  As I said, prescriptions were very easy to get, and it was certainly in the players best interest to get a prescription, for reasons other than legal.

If he used HGH without a valid prescription to treat a recognized medical condition he certainly did.

Do you have a link to the text of this policy?  Are you saying that he simply used a prescription drug without a prescription (assuming that's the case)?  Or are you saying that he used a banned substance?  GH was not a banned substance at that time.

Well violation of federal drug laws for starters.

Is it known that Pettitte used HGH without a prescription?  If he did, then you are correct, he violated federal drug laws; however, I'm sure you know that anytime anyone takes a prescription drug of any kind that they do not have a prescription for, they are violating federal drug laws, whether it's HGH, Viagra, an antibiotic, whatever.  It would have been extremely easy for Andy to obtain a proper prescription for HGH, if he did not have one at the time.

Violation of baseball's drug policy secondly.

He did not violate baseball's drug policy.

Then he lied when asked about it.

Well, shame on Andy for lying.

First, he said team, not season.  Second, the Astros season was down; there was nothing "up" about it.  Finally, a statement can be bitter and true.

If he's talking about strictly the 2007 season, he's right.  The circus last year was comical around here and much of had less to do with baseball and more to do with internal politics, organizational meddling, finger pointing and just a general mess of a situation.  Up and down is kind compared to calling it a farce and circus how Houston handled it's business last year.

Now the situation seems to be that strong baseball men have righted the good ship Astros and have a more defined focus to keep from having such a circus reappear.  If it's about winning again around here, it will be welcomed by many a player and baseball person in the organization.

Noe, please.  This is ridiculous.  Do you honestly think Brad Lidge was referring to "internal politics" when he made that statement.

At this point you are just pissing and moaning for the sake of pissing and moaning.

Will somebody think of the U.S. Americans?

I read an article somewhere online where the author defended her "U.S. Americans" comment and described it as intelligent, citing that Mexicans and Canadians are technically considered Americans, too, and without the distinction there's no way of knowing that she was speaking specifically about the people of the United States.

I got a kick out of it.

The team has underperfomed for quite a while now and Drayton has had a front row seat to watch it happen.  Has he meddled?  It appears so.  Has he brought in talent?  Without question.  Did he allow his GM to operate reasonably?  Could be no, but he wasn't entirely confident in Purpura (see Lane, Ensberg et al).  Were the firings and subsequent comments Drayton's finest hour?  No.  But, I don't think he went nuts.  His team is not good and he's got a shit load of money poured into it.  Heads have and will roll.  Can he make it worse by his moves?  Yes.  But, this is an owner who is not content with letting it go to hell without trying to change.  The city could do a lot worse.

Absolutely.

I agree that he wants a trial run with Cooper.  And I think the "change of direction" comments were aimed at Purpura.  But I don't think he has an idea of where he wants to go, other than to scream "I wanna wiiiiiiin" like Ricky Bobby.

I assure you he knows where he wants to go; he just may not know how to get there yet.  It won't be hard to go up from where they're at now though.  That's for certain.

Not Sunday's booing no.  Apparently he had already fired Purpura that morning, (wrong he was fired after Sunday's game.  But I think the "hundreds of people" had the same effect) for not paying first round money to 3rd round draft picks and not teaching Pence to slide.  Mclane says he talked to "hundreds of people" walking around the ballpark during games.  That's whose expertise he considers valuable.  Fans.   This team is being run by fans.  There's the jokes about teams taking votes during games to decide strategy, but to decide the long term future of a franchise?

Actually, for a guy who played the game, Dobro shocks me continually for being more responsive towards the outcome of anything being the reason to have disdain against players/managers/GMs.  It's okay, at least you know what you get from Dobro... outcome based caustic opinions.  If Lidge is putting up great numbers, he's very quiet.  If not, then the "Lidge sucks" post will reign.

Kind of odd to have such a surface level viewpoint from an ex-player, but it is what it is.

How did this turn to a discussion of Brad Lidge?  Anyway, you're wrong, Noe.  Check my recent posts.  I praised Lidge for his turnaround, but that does not change my displeasure for the way management has handled Lidge over the past few seasons.

Ironically, this particular trade (Wiggington for Wheeler) is eggszactly the type of trade that Gerry Hunsicker was praised for pulling off the majority of his Houston tenure.  Limit budget, check!  Sign key player, check!  Grab role players (solid ones) to build around core players, check, check, check!

Hunsicker would pull guys out of other organizations that most people wouldn't even bother to acknowledge as anything significant (and why should they?).  But Hunsicker knew what he was doing and it was always a good risk to make a trade for him because he knew eggszactly what type of player he needed and where he could find one.  Further irony is that this is the way he got Dan Wheeler, a piece of the puzzle for Hunsicker.  But trades like Carl Everett for John Hudek always fly under the radar until something happens and that player no one acknowledged or cared to think about from Hunsicker would start to perform.  Has Purpura pulled a "Hunsicker" move with Wiggington?  I dunno, maybe.  But you can see what he was doing by simply seeing what Wiggington does on the field.  This is eggszactly the type of guy you want to fill in as a role player around Berkman, Pence and Lee.  I would've loved for them to have kept Wheeler and sent Qualls to Philly for Bourn (yet another Hunsicker type of deal), but if they were going to make a move, this sort of out of the radar, media head scratching, great unwashed doesn't understand it  type of move is praise worthy.  But that won't happen until Wiggington is somehow transformed in the 2008 version of the 1999 C4.

Then someone... maybe... just one person... will say "Hey look!  Maybe Purpura does know what he's doing...".  Naaaah, who am I kidding!

I agree with your position on the Wigginton trade, but there's far more evidence that suggests Purpura does not know what he's doing than there is to suggest that he does.

Who said anything about GM ability?  I mentioned Hunsicker had pretty much wanted to leave because he tried to be a petulent little child and take his ball and go home.  He was a major asshole his last two years with the organization.  And before anyone blames McLane, it was all on Hunsicker on that one.  If you think Roger Clemens has an ego, Hunsicker has one to match.  So in essence it's funny to read all these "Hunsicker come home!" pleas from Pinwheel and some stuff in here about Hunsicker's tenure here as well.

His act wore real thin the last two years he was here, and although my hyperbole about no one shedding a tear is just that, it is pretty darn close to the truth that a collective huge release of joy went out from the home office of the Houston Astros when he decided to leave.  Purpura may not have the experience to run a club like Hunsicker, but he's been a much more decent human being towards those who work for the team organizationally.  Especially bridging a gap that was huge between the business side of things with the baseball side of things.  Many of the folks who work for the business end never met people like Dewey Robinson before and vice versa.  That is because Hunsicker wouldn't allow them to meet.

That changed over night with Purpura.

Noe, seriously, why should you, I, or any other fan care about any of this?  I didn't work under Hunsicker.  I could not care less if someone got their feathers ruffled in the Astros' office.  The man got things done and assembled good teams.

Purpura may have Fred Rogers' disposition, but he sucks at putting a good team on the field.  And not just a little bit.

I don't give a flying fuck that they're all singing Kumbaya in the front office.

BS.  Burke has never shown he is better than an aging and nearly decrepit biggio. Biggio is still getting the job done at 41 years old (more or less) and out performing Burke.  Burke has done absolultely nothing to supplant Bidge.  I'm sick of hearing this shit, and would have thought this place was intelligent enough not to have to deal with it.

Lidge's contract has nothing to do with how the Astros have to use him in their bullpen.
If it's determined that Lidge is most effective in middle relief, then why on earth would the Astros keep him around at $5M/yr.  Effective middle relief services can be had for a fraction of that.  Trade him to the Yankees, who don't understand this.

Right?
No, if I were pulling the strings and I made the decision to keep him around for 2007, I would certainly extend his leash beyond Opening Day.  After last night, he would not pitch in any close games.  With that in mind, I would get him as much work as I could between now and June 1.  If something miraculous had not happened by June 1, he would be gone.

What would I do?  Approach him about injury.  Why is *that* not an answer?

Because it has already been established that they have discussed injury with Lidge and injury is not an issue.  But you would "approach him about injury" anyway?  OK, nothing wrong with being thorough.  Now, when Lidge tells you again that he is healthy, how do you proceed?

Talk Zone / Re: Lidge sucks at pitching baseballs
« on: April 21, 2007, 10:07:21 am »
I thought I explain all this clearly in my post last night?  I guess not, but if I saw no improvement, I'd approach him about injury, same as Garner did with Lance Berkman.  It is no different for any player on the team. However, what you call improvement and what a manager calls improvement are two distinctly different things.  Fans see stats (or results), managers see whether the improvement is in the approach and attitude.  Stats will fall in line soon enough, unless one is looking for Lidge to be just outright dominant, then the stats will have to be pristine for said people in order to be satisfied.

I argue that a great majority of folks want pristine or ship his arse out.  However, even those who do not want pristine sometimes fail to see improvement like Garner does.  Either you see it or you don't.
Noe, you didn't really answer the question.  You've simply stated that you would "approach him about injury."   ???  Do you not think they've already discussed this with Lidge?

Funny, Noe.  This "one bad outing" nonsense is utter horse hockey and you know it.  But, I've got to give you credit; you make the argument with a face straighter than the Cincinnati Kid's, in true "Pope" fashion.

Here we were this time last year discussing the same thing.

Lidge was given the entire 2006 season to work out the kinks.  I'm not sure more work is the antidote.

Noe, if you were the manager (or GM) of the Astros, (yes, we all know you are not) how would you handle Brad Lidge and at what point would you consider him "unfixable?"

231
Ok, I know I'm pretty well known for the exaggerating and hotheaded overreaction, but does anyone in here have even the slightest hope for Lidge as an Astro at this point?

Talk Zone / Re: All Lidge. All the time.

Okay, so when Garner says this:

“It's not like I'm not going to pitch him in any ballgames. I'm going to pitch him more. I would like to get him in these meaningful situations in the middle of ballgames, and he'll tell me, he'll show me, when he's ready to get back to his rightful spot."

(So tell me, what does "rightful spot" mean if not closer.   You, yourself said 5 million dollars does not a middle reliever make... but a closer?  Hmmmm, yeah, okay. So is Garner lying here Dobro?)

"My hope is that I can get him in four out of eight days, every other day, two or three days in a row, and not have extended outings, those kinds of things," Garner says. "I think he can get back on track."

(What does "back on track" mean?  Be a serviceable middle reliever?  Oh come on!)

Noe, those quotes indicate that Garner is trying to fix a pitcher who was once his closer, with hopes that he can be the closer again one day.  He is not the Astros closer.  I don't know how much more clear Garner could make it.

He is still Houston's closer, which is what is perplexing to me that is not understood here.

This quote from Garner does not sound to me like Lidge is Houston's closer:

"Brad is not going to close as a general rule. There might be an occasion when I'll close back with Brad."

Noe, there is not some vast media/fan conspiracy against Brad Lidge.  He has not been getting the job done for a long time.  That's really the bottom line.

I think this is an anomaly, forced on the Astros, by trying to get Bidge at-bats so he can get to 3,000.  They are cheating on the roster so that they can keep Burke on the team (he's got to be out of options by now) to take over 2B once that glorious 3,000th hit arrives.  Without that elephant in the room, Burke would be at 2B and there'd be a CFer in CF.

You "keep  him" bunch are delusional.  If he was making league minimum, ok, tinker with him a bit longer.  The fact is, though, he's making much more than league minimum.  I've seen enough Brad Lidge to last me a lifetime, unless, of course, he's pitching to Astros hitters.

Again, you are correct.  And the exchange between Lamb and Biggio got fucked up because Lamb was forced to make a rushed, erratic throw to Biggio because he waited far too long as he attempted to outrun Lee, which ain't ever gonna happen.

"Textbook" is making two throws:  one throw ahead of the runner, then forcing him back to the base from whence he came and make another throw and the play there.  I didn't see the play, but I'm assuming the runner was caught between 1B and 2B and Lamb had the ball.  He should make one throw ahead of the runner, early enough that that runner heads back to 1B, and then they make the play there.

You are correct.  Basically, Lamb ran Lee to the advancing base.

Obviously, this guy is being a wise-ass, but it isn't smart to proclaim to anyone at this point, "I am not hurt."  You really don't know.  A family member was involved in a rear-end collision and she simply had a stiff neck in the beginning.  It gradually got worse and we started to suspect that it was more than just whiplash.  She finally went and had a MRI and found out she had two herniated discs in her neck.  Now, the responsible insurance company is trying to make her look like a con artist because she didn't follow through with all the medical procedures in a quicker fashion.

She, indeed, cannot work in the same sense that she once could and will probably never be as healthy as she was prior to the accident.  And she is in a great deal of pain on a daily basis.

3. Read.
4. Think about what you read.
5. Think about what you might have to add to the discussion.
6. Write a post. But don't submit it yet.
7. Reread your post and ask yourself if it makes any sense.
8. Finally... after all this,  maybe  hit the submit button.

Ironically, since the Cubs and Kerry Wood were mentioned already, there was the one time in 1998 when Craig Biggio felt that Wood was head hunting.  That was head hunting in terms of actually trying to hit Biggio on purpose... in the head.  Wood threw hard and aim one at Biggio's noggin.  Tyler Houston, yet another irony with his last name, was the catcher.  When Wood knocked Biggio down with that head shot, Bidge cast a mean eye towards Kerry as if to say "Hey, that was uncessary... not at the head... ever!".  Houston took offense at what Biggio was doing starring down at Wood that he yelled at him to "get in the fucking box already hot dog!".  Biggio went ballistic and started to yell back at Houston.  The umpire stepped in and told both of them to shut up and play.  Biggio flyed out to right on the next pitch, but as he ran into the dugout, he decided to keep yelling at Wood and Houston, calling both of them "bush league motherfuckers!".

It was the nearest thing to Biggio charging the mound I've seen in all the years I've watched him play.  Oh, and the following week, Houston had to play in Chicago in a three game series.  It was a weekend series, and that weekend was affectionately named "Biggio's revenge" in the TZ when it was all over.  Houston slammed the Cubs in all three games, scoring double digits in each game while basically shutting down the upstart and arrogant Cubbies.  Biggio was the sparkplug of the massacre too, scoring runs and driving in runs and wrecking havoc all weekend long.

Tyler Houston didn't learn though and kept his mouth running about the Biggio situation for several more weeks.  Must be something about being a Cubbie catcher in that something happens to you and you say stupid things about the Houston Astros stars... call it Barret Syndrome if you must.

Also, while Tyler Houston was behind the plate, he and Biggio got into a shoving match at one point during a game played in Houston.  I was at the game, but don't remember all the details.

I think you should get the heart & dagger deal on your forearm, but you should replace "Mother" with "Roy O"

Kind of like the electricity of the Rocket starting the All-Star game in Houston?

It's going to be cool next year on Opening Day when the team is introduced as "your 2005 National League Champions," maybe even World Champions.

That's got a much better ring to it than 2005 Wild Card Champions.

Don't know what happened.  Could be that I haven't had lunch, but I'm passed last night.

I'm over the gut-wrenching loss, the feeling of doom, the loss of confidence.

I'm really glad now there was a day in between.

Now we can go in to StL tomorrow and get back to winning.

Roy and Rocket.  No way it ends here.

For your sake, I pray to God (not the BBG's, but the Creator) that the Astros get this done.

Save all the bullshit praise of Purpura for someone who actually deserves it.  He tried to pull off the Moyer deal and what a fucking disaster that would have been.  Moyer saved us, not Purpura.  Moyer?  Fucking please.  That's the best he could do?

In spring training, we needed offense.  In the first-half, we needed offense.  In the second-half, we needed offense.  In the post-season, we need offense.  Uh, yeah, thanks, Tim.  You're a genius.

The Padres are such pussies.  I was hoping that they would at least make it interesting.

I have to be in Freeport today on business and was wondering if there's a good place in the area to catch the game.  Any Brazoria county folk know of a good hangout?

One reason I favor pettite in the big game is he doesn't have quite the tendency to have a penis measuring contest with the batter, as clemens and oswalt sometimes do as they just try to throw their best fastball by someone.

Well, not many guys are going to win a penis-measuring contest with Clemens and Oswalt.

I know that Craig does this kind of thing on a regular basis, but to witness something like this, unscheduled, unscripted, utterly human, compassionate, and spontaneous was, I felt, very special.

Craig Biggio is, indeed, a very special ballplayer.  It'll be a sad day for the city of Houston when he hangs up his spikes.

Did anyone catch his comment during the broadcast?

After mentioning Hunsicker, he said something like, "Boy, did Tim Purpura ever bring a breath of fresh air to this Astros organization in 2005!"

I almost lost it.

2 runs is pretty fucking weak, but the ump single-handedly shut down 2 innings that could have been big for the Astros.
