The one that tied the game, just before the Nats blew it open?

It took a few innings for Washington to blow it open. After the awesomeness of his pose, Bregman went 0-3, left a couple on and made the error that was to a some degree responsible for the blow out.

How do you characterize Altuve's blunder - stupid, selfish? Given the game situation and the skewed risk-reward ratio, there is no justification for the steal attempt. It's not just that he forfeited the go ahead run for his team, but how many more stress pitches could the Astros have put on Strasburg? Hard to gauge how much damage he caused to his team's chance to win the game.

Great to hear that the Astros are going to make a reasonable offer. He can make $100MM over the next three years and earn it with the best teammates he will ever have and be backed by the best combination of offense and defense in baseball. No doubt he will get much better offers. As a practical matter, how much difference would an extra $100MM make in his day to day life or does the notoriety of breaking the bank overwhelm all other considerations?

It must have been hard for Miley to watch last night's game and see his chances for a playoff roster spot evaporate. Urquidy's performance last night slammed the door on Miley. It is sad to see his season end. Also, he was cruising toward a juicy contract next year and that looks unlikely now.

I don't understand this. He's still under control. He's arb-eligible, but I don't think he's going to be able to put together a strong case in arbitration, specifically because of his injury history. So the Astros will have to pay ($7.5MM? he's making $5.0MM this year), but not so much that it won't be worth taking the chance that he'll actually be healthy next year. If they only get 80-100 games out of him again next year, *then* maybe they do something (e.g., trade).

No, you're right. I whiffed on his arbitration years. They have two years to get his back fixed. He will play a lot of games for the Astros I hope.

Did you then drive over 30 miles from Prestwick to stay at a luxury golf resort?

The fuel thing may be a red herring, but the staying at Trump properties thing - with the G7, Pence and now this - is becoming a theme.

This is all, of course, on top of Trump’s constant trips to his own properties, dragging the entire presidential entourage and apparatus with him where they pay full freight (and in one case run up a 5-figure bar tab).   Trump has spent 1 day in 3 of his presidency at one of his own resorts.

Never got to RON at Prestwick. Just stayed long enough to get refueled and maybe grab some chow at the flight line mess hall.

There was (and still is I think) a big refueling operation for US military aircraft in the Azores. Not sure what the hotel situation is there.

There is a decades long history of US military aircraft refueling at Prestwick beginning in the 40s and continuing through at least the 70s. I don't know for sure, but I have no reason to believe that the US has ever discontinued its refueling operations there. During the 50s and 60s, Prestwick was a major refueling hub for trans-Atlantic US military flights. I have landed in Prestwick for the purpose of refueling in US military aircraft on flights both originating and terminating in Turkey. That was many, many years ago.

You cannot legally take out the fielder at 2B. You can slide directly into the bag.

If the runner slides directly into the bag and the fielder is between the runner and the bag, can the runner make contact with the fielder? Or is contact taboo?

I understand the disappointment with Osuna's performance but the tone of the criticism was far too harsh to my taste.  I don't consider his demeanor lack of emotion; I consider it maintaining his composure. Blowing his top on t,he field wasn't going to help him retire the next batter; controlling his emotions and keeping his focus did.  I don't think that the throw to first was lack of effort; he thought that a soft toss was the best way to get the runner out and he didn't execute.
Still and all, Osuna will be the source of much apprehension for as long as the season lasts.

Lo! now the direful Verlander, whose skin clings
To his strong bones, strides o’er the umpire gnomes and cockroach sports writers
He withers all in silence, and in his hand
Unclothes the earth, and freezes up frail life.

Apologies to Wm. Blake

When we see Tucker again I hope we see a different Tucker than we saw last year. To my eye he seemed passive and tentative at the plate; a sharp contrast with Alvarez' confidant menace. When Tucker stepped into the batter's box he looked like Jeriome Robertson on the mound; as if he would rather be anywhere else.

i have very fond memories of the the Colt .45's and Astros' early broadcasts and Loel was part of that. Maybe a lot had to do with personal circumstances. Lowell was not so much a color commentator as he was an ad reader that was a Houston baseball fan. He provided little (if any) insight into the game but he was always cheerful and always an optimist. His stock phrases (a bloop and a blast, now you chunkin, he breezed him one more time) made the broadcasts comfortable and familiar. His enthusiasm balanced Elston's measured, professional manner. Nothing better than a Lovera and a Falstaff.

Reddick is a first class professional who excels in every aspect of the game. Even when he isn't hitting he is making a positive contribution. I am guessing that he is one of the most if not the most respected player on the team among the players. I don't see Hinch replacing him absent injury or a deep, prolonged slump. Maybe a few days off would bring his hitting around.
I'm all for having him back for the final year of his contract. If Tucker can beat him out, fine but I am not for trading him and handing the job to Tucker.
For what its worth, in every game he broadcasts, Berkman makes it a point to highlight Reddick's professionalism and importance to the team.

Relying on in-house resources looks very risky from here. Who knows when or if Peacock will be healthy. Urquidy looks good now but so did Valdez for a few games. Armenteros got crushed in his last AAA outing. Bielak has looked good for the last month or so. He could be an option.

I think Luhnow has decided who and how much he will give up in a trade. If that doesn't get him what he wants, then he is willing to stand pat. With a three man rotation, a shaky bull pen and losing 100+ man games from all star/mvp ball players, the Astros still have more wins than any AL team and only trail the Dodgers by one game for having the most wins in MLB.

In Luhnow We Trust. If the report is true that he is holding on to Tucker at the expense of Noah S., and the that is a big if, that is part of the negotiations as some have pointed out. The longer he holds out on Tucker, the more it makes the Mets want him. It is a variation of the briar patch ploy. “Please don’t make me put Tucker in this deal, please.”

I have no, nada, zip, none,  inside info on him, but my guess is he is sulky and pouting because Álvarez and Straw shot past him and is hitting in Houston, unlike Tucker in 2018.

That pretty much takes Straw out of shortstop. His future playing time will be in the outfield which is very crowded. When Correa comes back, Straw goes down or Kemp gets traded or DFA'd. Do luhnow/Hinch think that Straw is an adequate replacement for Marisnick now?

His very good performance was helped by some good fortune. Choo and Gallo just missed home runs in their first at bats. Another foot of distance on both and the game may have turned out differently. He took advantage of his good fortune and turned in a hell of a start.

Spiking Marisnick was 100% bush. Marisnick was guilty of nothing but playing clean, sportsman like baseball. The Angels have been through a difficult time and Marisnick correctly gave them a pass.

Really like Ford and Sparks - low key, matter of fact, strong, timely analysis.

Neutral on Kalas and Blum but they have been growing on me lately. They are personally enjoying the contributions of the second stringers and it shows through and elevates the broadcast. Don't like Morales - she is annoying and detracts from the game.  However her interviews with the Mayfield and Stubbs families were great.

Rogers on the 25 man roster demonstrates the non-existent pitching depth in the organization  Hinch won't him Rogers in a game that is in doubt and apparently there is no one at AAA that is a better choice.
I am guessing that Luhnow is working overtime trying to find pitchers from other teams that he can bring on board.

Correct.  While elements of it continue to be proved accurate.

In addition to Cohen's cell phone pinging off towers in Prague, they also have intercepts of Russians talking about Cohen being in Prague.  Here's the full story.

Of course, we're only finding this out now.  I presume that Cohen spilled these beans to Mueller ages ago.

Do you think the students knew he was a fraud?  Is it central to the story?

If he has truly posed as something he is not, I get the criticism, just not sure how it's supposed to change what I saw and heard in the video.

That is exactly the point. It has nothing to do with the story. That is why I asked the question to begin with.

Back to the original question. What is the importance/relevance of his veteran status. The answer is: None.
The pro-Nathanites will prop him, make excuses and adore him even if he was court martialed for treason. Te anti-Nathanites will revile him even if he is Audie Murphy.

429
I conflated "veteran" with "combat veteran".  That's on me, not him.

Still, he served, and you typically don't get to choose of you get sent into a combat zone or not.  For that you need a friendly doctor who owes your dad a favor.

He didn't say he was a veteran, he said he was a Viet Nam veteran. He also said that he was a recon ranger. The Army has Rangers, the Marine Corps has Force Recon. He was claiming to be a member the Marine Corps' elite combat unit.  The last Marine combat unit left Viet Nam in 71.

Here is the latest from the Washington Post:
In reality, Phillips served from June 1972 to May 1976 in the Marine Corps Reserve, a service spokeswoman, Yvonne Carlock, said Wednesday. He did not deploy, and he left the service as a private after disciplinary issues. From October 1972 to February 1973, he was classified as an antitank missileman, a kind of infantryman, Carlock said. He then became a refrigerator technician for the majority of his service.

The FOIA release shows that Nathan was on active duty for training from May - November 72. Then there is a gap in service and he is on active duty form August 74 through May 76. AWOL 3 times. Refrigerator mechanic.

Phillips also described coming back to the U.S. as a veteran of the Vietnam era.
“People called me a baby killer and a hippie girl spit on me.”
Quote from December 5, 2008 article by Vincent Shilling in Indian Country Today. This was an interview conducted at Arlington National Cemetery at an event honoring American Indian veterans.

Quote from Nathan's CNN interview over the weekend:
When I was there and I was standing there and I seen that group of people in front of me and I seen the angry faces and all of that, I realized I had put myself in a really dangerous situation. Here's a group of people who were angry at somebody else and I put myself in front of that, and all of a sudden, I'm the one whose all that anger and all that wanting to have the freedom to just rip me apart, that was scary. And I'm a Vietnam veteran and I know that mentality of "There's enough of us. We can do this."

Quote from Nathan's April 18, 2018 interview in Vogue:
You know, I’m from Vietnam times. I’m what they call a recon ranger. That was my role. So I thank you for taking that point position for me.

Quote from Nathan in January 20, 2019 inter view with Vincent Shilling in Indian Country Today:
You know, when I was in Vietnam times and when I was in the Marine Corps times, that's what I was. I was expendable. Expendable to corporate greed. You know, in all wars, especially the ones that are going down for the oil, you know, we're fighting against — the pipelines.

The symbolism of the wall was laid bare when those MAGA hat-wearing douches chanted “Build the Wall!” at Vietnam veteran Nathan Phillips...who is Native American.  It’s not about immigration, security or even drugs, it’s about white power.

I wondering what the importance/relevance is of Nathan being a Viet Nam veteran.  Is it to give cachet to his persona or is it as a multiplier of the social disability he suffers on account of his race?

It still kinda amazes me the Tigers even went to the World Series that year with a left side of the infield consisting of a .200-hitting Don Wert and a .135-hitting Roy Oyler. Then again, it was the Year of the Pitcher (and the Tigers of course had Lolich and McLain) and the league batting average was the lowest in AL history at just .230.

Statistically, the Red Sox hold the advantage in hitting; the Astros hold the advantage in pitching and fielding. If the aphorism that pitching and defense win championships holds true, the Astros are in good stead. With teams this closely matched, the series will probably be determined by breaks - the dribbler that goes foul or stays fair; the marginal pitch called a ball or a strike; the unanticipated performance by a secondary player.
