I'm all for BCS busters being included in the mix, but the rule that allowed Northern Illinois to sneak into the BCS should be amended.  Non-AQ schools should have to run the table to be included, imo.

I don't think anyone ever anticipated a non-AQ school would actually finish in the top 16 ahead of a conference champ from an AQ conference. Doesn't matter... rule becomes moot in two years anyway.

While I would have personally rather Texas played in the Cotton Bowl, I'm not going to get indignant about how it all played out. The Horns had a chance to help keep the little guys out of the top 16 and they blew it... twice. And I also don't think OU should automatically get rewarded for having two "good losses."

I'm trying to think of the last time a Texas football or basketball team won a game they weren't expected to.

No idea on basketball. Football was Nebraska in 2010. Before that was Oklahoma in 2008.

Have y'all read Sepinwall's Grantland piece on it? Pretty good stuff. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8670609/alan-sepinwall-origins-lost

Also, Lindelhof spent a lot of time on LOST in a recent interview. Youtube is blocked here at work but I suspect if you'd like to spend a half-hour watching him discuss the criticisms and general post-mortem a few years after the fact then I would recommend it. I'm sure a Google search would turn it up within seconds.

Funny... this is the 3rd or 4th instance of LOST resurface that I've seen in the past week or two. I miss that show.

I don't know. From what I saw of Kansas State last saturday night, they're lucky that  they are where they are, in my opinion.

On the road against one of the best offenses in the country when the opponent is pretty much playing for their season? I don't know that I would discount Kansas State so quickly, especially given the underwhelming performances from Florida and South Carolina.

It's helping the SEC that none of their top six teams had to play more than three of the others.

Probably Michigan (neutral site) or Washington (road home).  And what great OOC giants have been slayed by Pac 12 / Big 12 teams?

Big 12 wins over "Power Conferences":
K-State 52-13 over 6-5 Miami
Texas 66-31 over 5-6 Ole Miss
Iowa State 9-6 over 4-7 Iowa
TCU 27-7 over 4-7 Virginia
West Virginia 31-21 over 4-7 Maryland

Pac 12:
Arizona 59-38 over 7-3 Oklahoma State (current #21 in BCS)
Arizona State 45-14 over 2-9 Illinois
UCLA 36-30 over 9-2 Nebraska (current #14 in BCS)
Oregon State 10-7 over 7-4 Wisconsin
Stanford 50-13 over 6-5 Duke
USC 42-29 over 6-5 Syracuse
Marquee game remaining: USC v. #1 ND

SEC:
LSU 41-3 over 7-3 Washington (current #25 in BCS)
Missouri 24-20 over 6-5 Arizona State
Alabama 41-14 over 8-3 Michigan (current #19 in BCS)
Tennessee 35-21 over 6-5 North Carolina State
Marquee games remaining: Florida v. #10 Florida State, South Carolina v. #11 Clemson

None of that is particularly impressive, IMO, but UCLA has the best win as of right now. We'll see how they compare after this weekend.

Except that's not true. Understanding that you go to be early and can't do the 10pm purchase, there are thousands of people getting phones every day by doing this. When I picked mine up last week the woman that activated it told me they get at least a hundred each day at the Austin Domain store and I saw phones available at every Houston-area Apple Store when I was trying this method. It may not be convenient for you but it does not mean that are not available, "period."

OK, apparently I can't like the Samsung Galaxy S3.  I tried, I really did, but it just wasn't for me.  It was too big, too thin, and everytime I even looked at the screen things would happen.  Also, just couldn't get used to the Android platform.  So I had to return it, re-activate my old iPhone 4 along with my upgrade eligibility.  AT&T hasn't had any since the launch date and don't know when/if they will ever get any more.  Apple store people told me to get online at 10:00 pm and try "pick up in store".  I did that tonight, and none are available in Houston.  You can get whatever you want all over the place in Dallas, San Antonio or Austin, but nothing in Houston.  I'll try for a few days (though 10 pm is past my bed time), and if not, it's still 3-4 weeks to order one.  They told me if I ordered today, there's a chance I can get it before Thanksgiving.

Sigh.  Apparently Apple hates me like AT&T hates chuck.

Keep trying. I got it to work last week and that night I saw some in Houston. Start around 9:55 and just keep refreshing.

Come on, you can't really be worried about Kansas.

Here's another stat... We would need to win out for Mack's 2010-2012 record  (24-15; 0.615) to beat out John Mackovic's last three seasons (22-14-1; 0.594). Of course the trends would be going in opposite directions, but Johnny Mac did deliver two conference titles in that span.

4-9 with 4 blowouts in your biggest game of the year seems more meaningful, and a reflection of his ability to get his team prepared in THAT game.

10 of those wins came as a higher-ranked team, btw (6 against unranked opponents), so it's not as much refocusing and "righting the ship" as it is doing what they're supposed to do.

Yes, MB is at his best in rallying a Texas team from a devestating loss to OU. He has that routine down.
And, yes, I expect Texas will defeat Baylor Sunday.

Well hell, let's give him another 5-year extension. It drives me crazy when I hear this (note: Brown mentioned during that awful presser on Monday), as it somehow absolves yet another loss.

Four ass-whippings in 13 games against Stoops? Meh, we'll just beat Baylor next week and everything will be okay. Of course last year broke that streak.

545
Beer and Queso / Re: Texas vs OU
« on: October 16, 2012, 02:22:38 pm »
of course it is. i heard MB himself call it "inept."

It was definitely inept against OU, but the historicals show a pattern in that game that doesn't necessarily exist against other teams. OU has shut down very good offenses in the Brown era.

Texas *should* move the ball against Baylor.

You can try ordering online at 10pm for next-day store pickup - I know a few people that have had success - but I've tried five times and have not seen any in stock at either Austin store. The Knox street store in Dallas either has less demand or gets more phones than anywhere else in the state.

No.  Furyk should consider life in a monastery for about five to ten years.

Also, Davis Love learned nothing from when Crenshaw captained the US to their comeback--send out your best guys first on Sunday.  That's exactly what Olazabal did and it is obviously a pretty decent strategy.  Also, the Euros are just better and they pulled their collective heads out of their asses and showed it on Sunday.  Ian Poulter would have made a great assassin.  Also, Tiger has never played a team sport in his life and it shows in the Ryder Cup--he hates being there and would find it hard to pull for his own kids in a soccer match.  Mickelson has the focus of a shovel.  Colin Montgomerie is a pretty damn decent commentator and appears to have dropped a cup size.

Watching his grin and give Rose a thumbs up made me cringe. Appreciate the three points on Friday and Saturday, but at that moment he could have stopped the bleeding and not only did he not do so, he gave the impression that it was no big deal.

Loved seeing Dufner's fiery disposition down the stretch. All in all, I had a bad feeling on Friday that Tiger's lip-out at 18 might come back to haunt them. And it's pretty crazy that the only halved match all weekend was the one that didn't matter.

I've grown to really like Ian Poulter, so it was tough watching him go ice-cold gangsta on our team like that.

Listened to the new GB a few weeks ago and thought it was a mixed bag, much like their previous one. They can write some good songs, but some of what they do just doesn't resonate with me.

The new Band of Horses is very good and the new Avett Brothers, though top-heavy and not quite up to Emotionalism or I and Love and You, has probably already cemented itself among my top 10 favorites of the year.

I'm just glad to have some new music I enjoy... the summer months were a doldrum for me.

A very long time ago, there used to be a place near downtown (on what now sits the MMPUS actually) that had the best Fried Chicken I've ever had. I was just a kid, may be 12 or so, but I would work with my Dad during the summer to make some spending money. During lunch, on rare occasions, my Dad would take the ten minute drive down to this place and we'd sit down and eat the chicken plate. It was two pieces of chicken with a side salad (French dressing) and some fries (and iced tea... unsweetened of course). Something like 2 dollars if I remember correctly, maybe 2 and a half. I would eat the whole thing without a problem and my Dad would just smile at me with that proud papa look. I can't remember the name of the place, but it was so darn good. The chicken was not only deep fried, but it had a sort of tomato sauce blended it as they fried it.

Yum!

P. S. I used to trek over to Ervin's Chicken in Temple when I would have to commute there to work on a project. That was good stuff, but trust me, you don't eat there every day... lessen your days be numbered on this here earth.

Holy shit, this x 1,000,000. Love Ervin's (née Williams). There is a newish one right down the street from Drayton's house.

Tenders, mashed taters and a fried pie... That's a meal that is damn hard to beat. They opened a Bush's on 31st and that place sucks compared to Ervin's.

A "craft" brewery is defined as producing less than 6MM bbls per year.  Sam Adams produces less than half of that. So, despite the fact that you can get it everywhere, and it tastes like shit, Sam Adams is certainly defined as "craft".
Don't know the accuracy of this, but on my visit to Stone the other day our driver said that Sam Adams lobbied to move the threshold up to 6M so that they could maintain their status as a craft brewery.

This article doesn't imply that directly, but it doesn't seem like some tinfoil conspiracy either.

Thanks for all of the recs!

Our plan right now is pretty much...

Friday - afternoon wine tour in La Jolla
Saturday - Zoo, and maybe dinner at Sanska's
Sunday - afternoon Brewery tour (Stone, San Marcos, Lost Abbey)
Monday - Gaslamp and Astros game that evening

I suspect we'll fill in some of those blanks with aforementioned restaurants, and the rest with brewpubs (for me) and shopping (for her).

Any opinions on these spots?

O’Briens Pub (http://www.obrienspub.net/)
Toronado
Blind Lady Ale House (http://www.blindladyalehouse.com/)
Downtown Johnny Brown’s (http://downtownjohnnybrowns.com/)
Hamilton Tavern (http://hamiltonstavern.com/)
Luigi’s at the Beach (http://www.luigisatthebeach.com/)
Neighborhood (http://www.neighborhoodsd.com/index.php)

FWIW... the Astros are 2-1 in games I have seen them play outside of Texas, so I'm hoping that counters the awful road record this season.

The new Tallest Man on Earth is good, but it starts to get repetitive after about 6-7 songs.

I never really got into Keane before, but their new album is solid, and I love the new Metric. Emily Haines just does it for me, even is she is Canadian. I was pretty disappointed in Rhett Miller's latest solo effort, though that is often the case (Old 97s are my all-time favorite band, but I tend to like only a handful of his solo songs per release). Finally, for those that enjoy the indie-with-a-twang stuff, River City Extension just released a new album. I saw them at SXSW and they put on an incredible live show (if you subscribe to Paste and watch their SXSW set video, look for the dbag in the backward Astros hat), and their albums do a pretty good job of capturing that.

Semi-related, God bless Spotify. It makes it so easy to find new music, and all for $10 a month.

I don't own a JAB suit, das, but my experience in renting a tux from there last fall was enough to dissuade me from future patronage. For all I know, their suits may be top of the line. But the ill fitting garbage they gave me for my buddy's wedding, which didn't come close to meeting the measurements they took, and the "I don't give a shit" attitude they displayed when I raised my concerns, told me that my business was not valued. It was really a night and day experience from the Men's Warehouse, and not even close to the service I received at Macy's the last time I bought a suit.

On a positive note, as the wedding reception wound down, and as they say in Westeros, we were all in our cups, my untucked parachute, er, tux shirt was a hit on the dance floor.

Again, I feel people should work the hours of the day they need to, based on their need to work with other individuals, or their clients, or the public, or whatever their job demands.  Working 8am-5pm really isn't very productive if your clients are working midnight to 8 am.

I think that 8-5, in general, is arcane. You put it well: work when you need to work.

It's so hard for me to get into the NBA for several reasons and this is one of them.

The structure of the league is so backwards but it's the only the way the league can be successful.  While parity may be good for football and baseball (to an extent), it isn't for the NBA.  There are a small group of superstars that dictate what happens in the league.  At the end of the season everyone wants to see these superstars play each other and that's what the NBA has right now.  I do think the league would operate much better if 2-4 teams were contracted.

Instead of contraction I'd rather see the NBA move to a soccer-style relegation system.

So had a few new ones in rotation lately:

Beach House, Bloom: Wasn't nearly as high on their last album, but this got me from the start. Just great songwriting. Right now it's the leader in the clubhouse for my favorite 2012 album.
Best Coast, The Only Place: I dig this chick's voice enough to get past some of the lo-fi monotony and the vapid lyrics. The title track is a perfect little summer song... catchiest pop song I've heard since Of Monsters and Men's "Little Talks."
Memoryhouse, The Slideshow Effect: I saw them compared to Beach House... maybe because of the "dream pop" label, but it seems forced to me. Love the lead chick's voice (yeah, where have you read that before?) and their easy, laid-back melodies.
Father John Misty, Fear Fun: I've heard a lot of people rave about this, and I like quite a few of the songs. But there are a few that I just don't like at all.

Tonight is throwback jersey night, the dreaded Colt '45 handgun night (along with dollar hot dogs). Too bad won't get to see it tonight in Austin, unless they're on channel 77 for some reason (they may be).

It's not listed, but last night's Ranger game wasn't listed either, and it was broadcast on Ch. 77.

Austin Culturemap had this (apparently incorrect) blurb in a recent article:

Quote
Therefore, when you tune in Fox Southwest during baseball season within the next few days, more than likely you’ll see the Houston Astros even though we know only a few of their names (Carlos Lee, Wandy Rodriguez, and Chris Johnson). You’ll have to look elsewhere for the Rangers.

“The Austin area is, is considered a home market for the Astros, but when those games are on Fox SW and the Rangers are playing at the same time, then the Rangers game will be on Channel 77 [in Austin],” says Melissa Sorola, regional communications director for Time Warner Cable.

As far as apps I enjoy, the network/cable media apps are great (watch ESPN, HBO GO, NBC, ABC Player, TWC TV; availability may be dependent on your cable provider). Crackle gives you access to some free movies/tv shows, and Netflix is useful if you subscribe. And if you have a Slingbox, their app is a must-have, though it's pricey at $30.

Games: WordWelder was an obsession for about a week, but grew old quickly. I have a love/hate relationship with both Words With Friends and the NYT Crossword, and I've recently become hooked on Draw Something.

News: FeeddlerRSS is the best RSS reader I have found, and I also use Zite (which I much prefer to AOL Editions). HSW HD is a good time-waster when you're feeling nerdy, and CNN, FoxNews and NPR all have pretty food interfaces for the national outlets.

Other: As someone that always keeps a Wikipedia tab pinned in Firefox, I use Wikipanion a lot. I came to the iPad party too late last year to justify At Bat, but it looks pretty sweet so far. And if you like space, both the NASA HD and NASA Visualization Explorer apps are nice.

Books: Kindle and Stanza are my go-tos.

I suppose, in conclusion, I'm a big nerd.

Maybe it's better with the 3, but on the 2 an iPhone app definitely looks pixelated when expanded x2.

Piggybacking on this thread... I just got an iPad2 through work (I know, bad timing, but I had no control -- it was this or nothing, not this or the new one). I've had an iPhone for years, but curious if anyone has any good iPad-specific app recommendations.

What kind of apps? Games? Entertainment? Productivity?

I mainly use the laptop these days for music management, or when the iPad runs low on juice. If I feel like posting a bunch I may opt for the laptop, just because of the keyboard aspect.

Anyone upgraded from the 2 to the 3? Can you tell a difference?

I saw him once on Public Access and was surprised to see that he was well spoken and... well, sane. At least he appeared so. His antics and general persona turned me off long ago, though. I'll take a stab at an Ebby list (SnS music awards should absolutely be called the Ebbies).

Top 20 Albums (Favorite Songs in Parentheses)

1.   Dawes, Nothing is Wrong (Time Spent in Los Angeles, Coming Back to a Man, How Far We've Come, A Little Bit of Everything)
2.   Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues (Helplessness Blues, Sin Sala Bim, The Plains / Bitter Dancer, Bedoin Dress, Battery Kinze)
3.   The Head and the Heart, The Head and the Heart (Lost In mY Mind, Couer d'Alene, Ghosts)
4.   Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Here We Rest (Alabama Pines, Codeine, Tour of Duty)
5.   Portugal. The Man (So American, Got it All [This Can't Be Living Now], Sleep Forever)
6.   The Decemberists, The King is Dead (Rox in the Box, Don't Carry it All, Calamity Song)

Foster the People
Girls
Givers
Joy Formidable
Man Man
Old 97s
Theophilus London
Wye Oak

Top 10 Songs (no particular order)

1.   The Strokes, "Under Cover of Darkness"
2.   Fitz & the Tantrums, "Pickin' Up the Pieces"
3.   Dawes, "Little Bit of Everything"
4.   Fleet Foxes, “Helplessness Blues”
5.   Jason Isbell, "Alabama Pines"

8.   Portugal. The Man, "So American"
9.   Head and the Heart, "Couer d'Alene"
10.   The Decemberists, "Rox in the Box"

There is a clear chasm between the first ten and the second ten albums, and not a lot of space between the second ten and the fifteen HMs. Then there are albums that tomorrow could end up in the HM instead of some of those 15 because I really liked 1-2 songs and didn't like much else (see: Darkness, Under Cover of).

BTW, Ebby, I've been spending some time today reviewing some of your picks that I wasn't very familiar with. Appreciate the work you put into that. I'm guessing you covered 2-3 times the ground I did.

I don't think using the bowls is a viable solution for anything longer than a four-team, two-round playoff, because it involves too much travel. I can't see a fanbase traveling cross-country three weeks in a row, and neither the NCAA nor the bowls want half-full stadiums.

I listened to the AA Bondy on NPR's site a month or two ago and liked it, but I haven't gotten around to buying (or "buying").

I've been lax on new music lately... the last stuff I bought was Girls, Fitz & the Tantrums and Other Lives, all of which I liked, but didn't necessarily love (each had some great standout tracks, though).

This week I've been trying out the Spotify Premium service and my favorite find has been Real Estate. Wasn't too big on the new Ryan Adams or M83 (agree with you; they haven't really done much for me in the past).

So I'm up for the Gameday Rivals "Bud Light Ultimate Tailgater" contest, which is judged by the number of views of each tailgater's video. If you have two minutes to kill, or just want to see me say stupid shit on camera, I would appreciate the views!

There is some sort of prize, which I can't remember, but I really just don't want to finish last.

Gilbert wasn't a bad person. He didn't get arrested, get the program in trouble with the NCAA, or dog it on and off the field. He was just a high-profile recruit that didn't get the job done. The guy wanted to be a Longhorn and he gave all he could. The fact that he wasn't a good quarterback shouldn't give people carte blanche to make ridiculous comments trashing the guy, IMO. This has to be pretty humiliating for the kid, and he's doing it with class, so why is it necessary for some internet morons to pile on? Most of us moved on after BYU.

Oh, and about the previously rumoured iPhone 5, it is likely that it was all the work of case manufacturers trying to get a jump on sales by releasing cases based on a design that may not even exist.  Don't expect the 5 to show up anytime before Apple's customary 3rd/4th qtr release next year.

Nice, that means that the 5 would have the kinks worked out by the time I'm eligible for an upgrade in Dec 2012.

Went to Spec's last night to try and find one of the recent lagunitas seasonals - Little Sumpin' Wild Ale. I didn;t see any, so I picked up an Ommegang Three Philosophers instead... it's a belgian blend with hints of chocolate and cherry, and I enjoyed it. I also got a few of the other Lagunitas seasonals, the Wilco Tango Foxtrot and the new Doppel Weizen, which I intend to enjoy this weekend while hopefully watching a Longhorn win.

What is everyone drinking lately?

You mean how Texas ended up staying in the Big 12 with OU, keeping the LHN, probably adding BYU and replacing the commissioner they didn't want anyway? Or do you mean the part where OU learned they couldn't go to the PAC-12 and didn't have too many other options?

No, I'm kind of happy about that. Dodds played everyone like chumps and got exactly what he wanted.

I haven't had a 34 waist since HS. Maybe early college. Last summer I dropped down to 36 long enough to buy some pants that fit perfect for six weeks.

767
I should add that I did actually consider buying some jeans at H&M (for guys it's more like $30 for $70 jeans, I suppose), but as hipsters don't typically have waistlines above 34 I was unable to find anything in my size. It let me get to the beer quicker, though.

Lurch hit the nail on the head. Of course it worked to my advantage in SF. There is a pretty good little bar across the street from one of the H&Ms, so while the lady shopped for three hours I shot the shit with the bartender and got to enjoy quite a few brews we can't get here in Texas.

Maybe I'm just down from Man City blowing that 2-0 lead.

Anyway... I don't really think the late start issue is such a big deal. In the pod system Texas will play three road games to west coast venues. The higher-caliber games aren't going to be relegated to the late-late slot. My guess is that Texas plays a 9pm game once or twice per season. If that's cause for complaint then I think you're just looking for a reason to be contrary.

Guys, guys, I think you're failing to recognize the impressive stature of the writer here, I mean after all, did you not see in his post-column bio? He's not just a former BPer and baseball writer: he's a dermatologist.

So, we really should yield to his poorly-researched, recycled opinions and accept whatever he has to say about the Astros.

He also blogs about the Royals. Perhaps we could have one of the guys at Astros County or TCB pen a ho-hum tome about the shit-tastic performance of that franchise over the last 24 years.

On top of glaring inaccuracies (neglects Schafer and paredes as guys under 26 that are significant parts of the team, calls Jordan's stuff mediocre, notes that Wallace is the first baseman), this piece is probably the most pedestrian "summary" of the Astros' woes I have read this year.

I'm wondering why he even felt compelled to write it? Is there some portion of the Grantland readership that was clamoring for a mid-September piece about the worst team in baseball? With little to no pennant race drama that's what they're left with? Every other news outlet has already covered this ad nauseum. It's a hack piece, and it irritates me.

I agree that it is mental stress issue, not a physical tools issue. I think him being part of a rotation in the short term, is the best way to resolve who should warrant the lion's share of snaps in the long term.

Disagree. IMO, the spring and the first six quarters of this season resolved who should warrant the lion's share, and that individual is not Garrett Gilbert. He may yet get another chance, should the McCoy/Ash rotation falter, but his performance has warranted the depth chart change.

RE: physical tools... He has a cannon, but also a slow release and poor touch.

Beer and Queso / Re: UT football '11
« on: September 13, 2011, 10:36:55 am »
i know college football doesn't have the complex presnap reads and route options that pro offenses have, but you still gotta wonder about the coaching gilbert's received in his 2+ years on campus. most of the mistakes outlined here seem easily avoidable with basic coaching.
The complexity from last year to this year has increased significantly, and Gilbert seems to lag as a distant third in really getting a handle on it. At this stage I don't think we can blame "poor coaching" for his deficiencies. And to be honest, inability to develop quarterbacks was not Greg Davis' major woe.

I know most of you probably aren't fans of barking Carnival, but I wholeheartedly agreed with Scipio Tex's post today re: Gilbert:

Quote
Gilbert tried his best. And seems like a good guy. If you can point to lack of effort anywhere in Gilbert’s game, I’m happy to concede. Not lack of performance. That’s clear enough. Lack of effort. I’m not aware of any off-field issues either. So when a good citizen tries his hardest and doesn’t pan, he’s an object of personal scorn? Really?

I don’t mean a choice curse word after an interception, an expression of desire for another signal caller, or a detailing of his deficiencies. I’m talking about the hyper-personal garbage we’ve all seen or heard.

Newsflash: Garrett Gilbert plays for Texas.

He’s OUR guy as a member of the team, even if he’s not your guy or my guy at starting QB.

You either get that at some fundamental level or you don’t. And if you don’t, I can only speculate on the cause. Maybe you’re a jerk. Maybe you revel in the failure of others in all aspects of life. Maybe you don’t know any better. Maybe the commercialization of college football and absurd ticket prices have created a professional mindset in fans. Maybe you like attention, whatever its form. Maybe it’s exciting to boo.

Except that is all trumped by this: The Longhorns are our team. Our players – at least the ones who conduct themselves with class on and off of the field and play their hardest every Saturday – are our guys.

If you’re one of the people booing him, luxuriating in Gilbert’s failures, or writing personal attacks, this isn’t the place for you. We generally give people all the rope necessary to hang themselves and our moderating touch is light, mostly because our readership is smarter than the average bear. At some level, stupidity is self-evident and is its own caution to others.

But QB controversies have an amazing attractive ability. It’s emotional flypaper. Idiots emit some sort of clustering beacon to attract others where they try to find some collective purchase like viruses trying to take over their host. Then it becomes a game of one-upmanship for who can top the others for shock, hatred, and cowardice. Thankfully, that number has been small here, but it’s not going to spread.

The nasty stuff - I mean, the really hateful, personal vitriol -  that gets posted on message boards drives me crazy.

1 other thing about the proposed PAC16, that would be a fantastic road trip conference.  Some great cities in that 16.

Absolutely, and a huge reason why I want this to happen.

I agree completely that one of the four pods is a little more top-heavy, historically, than the others, but that's been the case with the B12 South more often than not in recent years. And who knows what changes lie ahead? If that's what it takes to start the sport toward a playoff system, then so be it, IMO.

For the time being I don't see why you couldn't just take the two best overall records among the 16 for a CCG.

One of the local Austin sports anchors led off the highlights package with the clip of the guy falling, and I damn near thought he was about to make a joke... it was very nonchalant, right up until he said they guy had passed away. Austin Beer Works is a new brewery with four offerings... I had the Fire Eagle IPA at Contigo a few weeks ago. But I just pick up a sixer of that, the Peacemaker Pale Ale and the Pearl Snap German-Style Pils at Sunrise Mini-Mart on Anderson.

Looking forward to trying the latter two... the Fire Eagle is pretty damn good.

Agree, Lurch. Every time I've been he's chatted us up and given the impression that he really appreciates the business. Obviously the line would move faster if that scenario didn't repeat itself 250 times, but it's probably a good thing. He does his thing, loves what he does, and produces some damn fine food. Two months from now I'll probably have another craving strong enough to wait for 2.5 hours.

I'm not trying to fault Lyon for trying to pitch through pain. Shouldn't someone, though, at some level (Rex Jones up through Ed Wade) see that his performance is suffering, make the correlation that it's due to an injury, and make the executive decision to sit him down until said injury heals/improves?

OK, I wasn't sure what you were talking about with MLK, so I skipped over that. I thought maybe there was something else I missed. I had not seen anything about this before until I saw this today:
http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/05/anatomy-of-a-fake-quotation/238257/

I haven't read the whole article, so I hope it isn't offensive to anyone.

What I said were my own words. I am glad OBL is gone. He was not a good person, and his influence on others, and what he did, was terrible. He led a group of people that wanted to be led down that road for whatever reason.

The reason I cannot celebrate has to do more with how many lives were lost or destroyed, and will continue to be lost and destroyed. What I was trying to say was that his death reminded me of those people who have been hurt, not that I have sympathy for him in any way. I am sorry I did not express myself well.

All good, my man. I can respect your opinion.  I didn't mean to imply you were being preachy or morally condescending or any of the descriptions I might use with some of the jackwagons on my facebook feed the past few days (who were very much trying to be all of the above).

Beer and Queso / Re: Bin Laden Dead
« on: May 02, 2011, 11:25:45 pm »
OK,

I will state that I have a hard time celebrating the death of anyone. I believe what OBL did was terrible beyond imagination. I am not sorry that he is no longer there, for many reasons. I have seen too many people celebrate terrible things that have happened in the US, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Asia, and elsewhere, and I always wondered how they could.

I am not sorry he is gone.

I am happy for those who needed him to be gone.

I am hopeful for those who resisted his influence.

I honor those who fought to eliminate him and people like him.

I cannot celebrate that it was necessary.

I agree with most of that, but I have zero problem celebrating his death. I keep seeing this quote everywhere (apparently falsely) attributed to MLK, and while the sentiment is nice, OBL wasn't an "enemy," he was pure evil. I am ecstatic that he is dead.

Showtime is pulling shows like Dexter and Californication off from Netflix's watch instantly offerings. Probably just a matter of time before you can subscribe directly to Showtime to view their shows online without having to pay a third party to deliver the content.

HBO apparently now has a streaming service for subscribers with tons of old shows and movies, but TWC does not yet offer it. Furk.

I filled out two brackets.

#1: Kentucky, Texas, Kansas, Pittsburgh
#2: North Carolina, UConn, Kansas, Pittsburgh

No love for Ohio State or Duke in either bracket. I wanted to pick against Pitt, but the rest of that region was underwhelming. And while I picked Texas to the Final Four in the first one, I have them going out in the second round to Arizona in the other.

RE: Middle Brother... they're playing SXSW (of course), including a Brooklyn Vegan show at Barbarella with back-to-back-to-back-to-back performances from: Jason Isbell, Deer Tick, Old 97s and Middle Brother. They could not have put together a show that I would rather see if they had let me choose the artists.

Sadly, this means I have to miss The Dodos, J Mascis and Wye Oak, who play the same venue on other stages at competing times.

Rural Alberta Advantage, Departing - I've seen these guys the past two years at SXSW and thought they put on a great live set, but their previous album was very raw, and in spots their attempted harmonies were more of a tonal assault than anything else. This new album is very good, though. It reminds me a little of Deer Tick, if you're familiar with them. They have a gritty-voiced frontman and a chick the brings backing vocals. It doesn't get released until March 1, but it's "out there."

If he approaches 2011 with a "fresh start" attitude I don't see why Texas can't get back to 10-win potential. If he's taking the petulant child approach because he had to cut dead weight then it may be a very long season.

So my computer's USB ports decided to stop working a month or so ago and since I couldn't update my iPod I fell off the music wagon. This week I said F it, and just went old school, burning CDs.

Stuff I'm listening to now:

Old 97s - My favorite band of all time, and I think the new Grand Theater is about 10x better than the piece of garbage they put out a few years ago. Still not their best work, but I'd say about half of the tracks actually do feel like a 97s record.

NERD - Only through a few listens... not really feeling it so far.

Cee-Lo Green - Has kind of an Outkast feel... more upbeat and light than his Gnarls Barkley material. I'm really enjoying this one. He actually covers a Band of Horses song, and I started laughing when I caught on to it.

Kid Cudi - I burned this in reverse order, and I'm hoping the beginning of the album is better than the end, because I didn't really much in the second half of it that I liked. It has 17 tracks, and I just got tired of it before I completed my first listen-through. I'll get back to it this weekend, but my initial impression is I liked Man on the Moon Vol 1 much better.

Also, finally got around to getting Mumford and Sons, but I'm just now listening to it.

Then we disagree on what we see from the scheme. In those BCS teams, I see an offense that was at it's best when the play broke down.

I get what you're saying here, but I'm still not necessarily convinced that the offense was at it's *best* when the play broke down. Yeah, we were blessed to have two incredibly great improvising quarterbacks at the helm, but there's that whole "post hoc" fallacy that keeps me from automatically drawing the "ergo hoc" conclusion.

Take the closing drive of the 2006 Rose Bowl, for instance. Texas ran the same play on both 3rd and 4th down. Vince chose to pass on 3rd and run on 4th. I wouldn't call the results of the successful 4th down attempt a "broken" play, even though I know some people choose to label it as such.

Again, I'm not an X's and O's guru (and I will not argue for a moment that GD is a great offensive mastermind), but GD had his moments. The short passing game of the past two seasons seemed pretty well designed, to me, though it's obvious that you can argue that the talent made it work as much as, if not more so, than the scheme itself. And at this point I may be talking in circle, so as they say on the radio, "Im'a hang up and listen..."

You may be right, Jim, but if Mack honestly thinks this is just a "down year," and that the problems are short-term and easily fixable, then I would prefer we just move on the Muschamp (or whoever) era.

His PC on Monday led me to believe that he has no idea what the hell is wrong, and no idea how to right the ship... at least in the short term. Obviously, I am not an X's and O's guru, so my opinion is worth little. My uninformed opinion, though, is that our program has become complacent and lazy, and that the recruiting, especially, in recent years has been sub-par, despite what recruiting ratings may say to the contrary.

I can't imagine that anything could prevent wholesale changes after this debacle of a season, even if the team somehow manages three straight wins.

This is so enjoyable that I'm almost able to forget they're still only going to be 2-7.

There is no NFL talent on the offense at the moment. When is that last time that was the case?

What you are seeing is a lack of talent rather than a lack of effort.

I think it's both. I do not believe the give-a-shit factor is high with most of the team.

I take it all back.

This team might be worse than 1997.

It's definitely a more frustrating season than 97, IMO

I would have loved to, but I have to go set up our tailgate at 6. Dammit.

It can't possible get any worse than not showing up for the past two games.

Colt's TD run was pretty amazing.

A few of the guys in that thread emailed the Co-Op board and one of the responses noted how positive the reaction was... I guess they decided they couldn't get away with that stuff anymore.

I saw Frightened Rabbit at SXSW and they put on a great 45-min set. I know quite a few people that went last night and really enjoyed it.

I haven;t listened to much new stuff lately, but I'm actually enjoying the new Old 97s album... much much more than the less-than-impressive release from two years ago. It's not Too Far to Care good, but quite a few strong tracks.
