Good defense pretty much everywhere has helped the pitching.

I went to The Original here in Ft. Worth last night and had the Roosevelt since it is there signature dish.  The queso was ok as was the rest of the dish.  It really was no better than Guapos in DC which was surprising since I was told ad nauseum that the Original was the quintessential TexMex place here in DFW.  I should have just had my old staple chile relleno since they are pretty hard to screw up.

Guapo's is not setting the bar high. (I've only been to the one in Shirlington.)

Whatever we do we don't need to piss off the baseball Gods.  Headed to KFC for the ritual chicken.

I did an unsustainable amount of yard work this week. I still need to mow my lawn, so I'm going to try to do the front yard today and the back yard tomorrow to split things up. May need to get creative if this thing continues.

Hopefully, the Astros won't be getting picks like this again for a long while, so I think the best strategy is get the most value you can.

I think if you bring him up, you'll have an extra starter when Lowrie comes back. You can trade Valbuena and have Lowrie play third, or you can trade Carter or Gattis and have him DH/1B. Or trade an outfielder and have Gattis play LF.

Just a couple of post-game points of order for those scoring at home:

1. A runner advances either on a steal or a wild pitch/passed ball, but not both. If he was running on the pitch, he gets credit for a stolen base and the pitcher is not charged with a wild pitch. If the runner wasn't moving on the pitch, no stolen base and pitcher is charged with a wild pitch or the catcher charged with a passed ball.

2. A batter only gets credit for a sacrifice fly if it scores a run. A runner simply advancing to 2b or 3b is not a sac, it's simply a fly out, and the batter is charged an at bat.

Keep up the good GZ work!

I somehow knew those comments weren't quite right, but just decided to power through.

As a side note, it seems all my Apple hardware (a mini-mac and iPad 2) that I bought 3 or 4 years ago is now incredibly slow. Is this true or have my expectations adjusted?

Two wild pitches tonight by McHugh.  For anyone actually watching the game: is he having control issues, or is it on Castro?

McHugh is having control issues and I think he likes to put some of his pitches in the dirt. Castro isn't the best at that, but tough to deal with.

I went to Anejo last week (the new joint in Arturo's old space); queso there is $16.50.  It's served all fancy on a board with the DIY pico on the side but, for that much money, I should be able to swim in the bowl.  Oh, and it's just fucking cheese so how does it cost so much?

Cheese can be pretty pricey, but probably not the type that melts properly and complements ro-tel.

I'm 6-6 overall, and I don't get any of this. What's the strategy, and how is it employed?

The strategy is to pick a set of players who will perform well in the simulated games of the upcoming week and assign them optimal roles on your line-up card. The strategy is employed by researching the stats of the players and upcoming opponents they are playing against, making your line-up card appropriately and submitting it on Monday morning (or Sunday morning).

No.  I have asked 4 times now.  Why is a guy with a career .229 average, who has never hit even .250 or more than 12 homers batting 3rd?

He had a .349 OBP and .801 OPS against RHP last year, he isn't as slow as Gattis and Carter and he had a good spring. I don't think he will be there when they face lefties.

You're team 5 right?  Castro's hitting .296/.367/.630 this spring.  I don't see why he can't maintain that....

On that note, it's going to be awesome to see Bryant hit 120 HRs this season.

I guess I glossed over the keeper league detail... was wondering why so many prospects went in the mid rounds. Kind of kicking myself now for not jumping on that trend earlier. I get the feeling my team is going to be a late 00s Astros squad... just enough veterans to not finish last, but no real hope for the future.

I knew about it and managed to mess it up anyway.

Do any of you  pitching gurus out there have a theory on this? Is it just dumb luck? Certainly over this period of time there have been many pitching coaches with different philosophies come and go in each organization.

40 years is a lot of pitchers, so I would put a substantial fraction of the difference to statistical variation.

1853
Keuchel out after 3. Chris Lee comes in the fourth and gets 3 in a row. Tied 2-2.

1854
Buck homered to left to lead-off and Keuchel has put on two since then. Astros 2-1.

What's the over/under on Astros selected by the time the draft ends?

25?

I'd say 28.

1909
So far, Deduno is getting it done.

Very efficient, too.

1910
Fields strikes out two and gets a fly out to shallow center. Astros win 7-6.

1911
Wilson hits a solo homer, Astros 7-6, top of the ninth.

1912
Sounds like another brutal day at the plate for Santana.

Not sure he has much chance to make the team.

Fields pitching the 9th.

1913
Deduno gets another three in a row with a K to end the inning. Middle of the 8th, Astros 7-5.

1914
Deduno in for his third inning. Top of the 8th.

1915
Stassi hits a HR to straight CF, Springer scores (he walked). 2 outs Bottom of the 7th. Astros 7-5.

1916
Three up three down for Deduno, Tied 5-5. Middle of the 7th.

1917
Marwin was ok, but Moran was subbed in.

1918
Rasmus walks, Santana hits into double play, Marwin HBP, Correa K's. Tied 5-5. End of the 6th.

1919
Thanks for the pbp.

No problem. Able to multi-task today.

1920
Come-backer off of Deduno's glove, Torreyes can't get to 1st in time. Runner scores.

Stassi throws out Diaz trying to steal 2nd. Tied 5-5.

1921
Correa and Torreyes get a double play off a slow grounder. 2 outs, runner on 3rd. Top of the 6th.

1922
Singleton, Castro, Lowrie down in order bottom of the 5th. Deduno on to pitch the 6th.

1923
Reynolds grounds out to SS, run scores from third. Astros 5-4. 2 outs top of the 5th.

1924
Altuve drove in Rasmus with single, then advanced to second on throw. Altuve scored on Valbuena single.

1925
Astros up 5-3, I don't know how since I was talking to my boss. Gregerson pitching.

1926
Who was pitching for the Good Guys?

Oberholtzer gave up 2 in the first 3 innings, Qualls came in for the 4th and gave up 1.

1927
Rasmus smacks a double on a 3-2 count, Astros 3-3. No outs, pitcher pulled.

1928
Lowrie doubles to LCF, Castro to 3rd, no outs. Bottom of the 4th. Cards 3-1.

1929
Cards lead 3-1. Middle of the fourth, Wilson scores on passed ball on outside fastball.

1930

Mr. Singleton's 429/556/827 slash line in his first 9 appearances has made things interesting.

I seem to remember Singleton starting off fairly strong when he was called up then fading for the rest of the season. I don't know if that is the fault of the pitcher's knowing what he will swing at or something about Singleton.

I find that every piece of Astros news is totally processed including all possible jokes and all variations and temperatures of takes within 10 minutes of it hitting twitter. By the time it would take to post anything, it would be old news. I know some people don't keep up with twitter, but I have a feeling that most people around here do, so that's bad for morale.

I appreciate those who are willing to dig deep (Nate Colbert recently) and others. I plan on watching a bunch of games this year, so hopefully people will show up in the GameZone.

I liked The Fighter by the same director and also a sports movie.

When I was kid A.J. Foyt would have been up there, but I guess those days are gone.

Hard to justify that trade still but Bourn's best years were in Houston. Oberholtzers' best may still be ahead of him.

Bourn had a good 2012, which would have been the last year of the Astros contract, but he spent it on a playoff contender instead of a 107-loss trash fire.

3.  Holy hell, Evan Gattis just became the first pick of the third round.  Homerism run amok.

If catching defense isn't a big factor and you can play him at catcher even if he is playing DH or 1B then that's maybe some good thinking.

Given that I would think they'd tape all the games and edit them down to 30 minutes to play at night to try to drum up a little more casual fan interest without investing a lot of tv time to do it.

I would watch this, but I don't know what it would cost to produce. I wonder how much work goes into those 13-min condensed regular season games on mlb.com. Those are great.

Not sure I can name anything you guys haven't heard of.

Classical - A long time ago I learned that any album with Andres Schiff and Bach in the title is good.

Blues - Back when there was about 3 used CD stores on the drag I collected most of the Blues Masters Series.  Probably should spend the $5 to finish it up.

Old Rock - I've been doing a lot of coding at work and that means Obscured by Clouds.

Jazz - I was recently talking to a guy who paid a ton of money to see Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock live in Paris and said it was the worst concert he had ever been to. That's too bad, because I've always liked Footprints.

Country + Alternative -  I'm interesting in what you guys have to say.

If Valbuena or a Valbuena/Dominguez platoon or a motivated Dominguez produces average 3B production and defense, then that makes up for a lot of whatever differences between Fowler and a Marisnick/Rasmus combination in the outfield.

Some of that is cleaning up the messes of their own creation, but mostly good stuff. I thought they would get something for Castro, though I guess that could still happen. They also didn't really solve the corner infield problem which was a priority, but they didn't have a lot of options so I guess Singleton and Dominguez are going to have some time to figure things out.

The new bullpen members will be much appreciated as will the GZ participants who can actually watch the games.

I remember about 10 years ago that an Irish guy was telling me that MLS was doomed because they adopted the American season-playoff structure versus the Euro competition structure where you have separate elimination play and season play going on simultaneously (or whatever is going on, I don't really follow Euro sports). MLS seems to be doing ok despite this, but it is a little weird that we have settled on this one way of organizing sports leagues.

It is a completely predictable that you would have an occasionally below .500 division winner with 8 4-team divisions. It might occasionally happen with 6 5 team divisions.

I bet it didn't come up at all during the discussions because those are not the numbers they care about.

I recently watched the version that was put together by a bunch of obsessives who tried to reproduce the color-scheme and all the original details of the original films (I don't remember what the project was called) and was really disappointed. I have a DVD version of the Special Editions and it just so superior in all the parts that Lucas didn't go out of his way to destroy. I hope they can finally find a balance between modernizing the images without all of Lucas's latter-day harebrained ideas.

After watching Interstellar, I just re-watched 2001:A Space Odyssey which looked totally amazing in Blu-Ray. Here's to Disney getting it right.

Gregerson has averaged 66 IP a season over 6 seasons and Neshek pitched 67 last year, but has only pitched that many 1 time before. Maybe I was low-balling a bit, by looking at the Astros relievers.

In any case, twitter people are saying that the Astros are looking for a mid-rotation starter and another bullpen arm (Veras, maybe).

Still wondering why we traded Tropeano, but maybe we need three catchers like King Crimson needed three drummers.

Hammel gets 2 yrs at $18M with a third year option, $2m buyout. If the Cubs pay the buyout they get Hammel for 2 years at the same rate as Feldman ($10 M/yr though its front-loaded).

But really the Astros are going to have to pay the "shitty organization" tax for the foreseeable future to get anyone worth a damn.  Even Feldman was an over-market deal.
