I don't think Correa's ball cleared the fence by more than two feet, but I'll take it.

In flight I didn't think it was getting out but happy to be wrong.

That'll teach me for feeling a bit upbeat when we scored in the top of the inning.

A look of disbelief and reaction when he thought he should have had a called strike three, clearly outside. I have the sound down but the view was easy to interpret.

We needed more proof?

I saw it a little different to both of you guys...

I thought Giles could have got to the bag to receive the ball if it was going to get there.  I thought he was trying to time his arrival at the bag but gave up when he realised there was no play.  I only saw it once and no replay because of lag in the feed.

I was 100% certain that Gattis was going to hit into a double play. So much so that although I knew it was impossible I was hoping Hinch would pinch hit for him. Think of it, pinch hitting for your DH in the ninth with the bases loaded. Yet the results could not have been worse. Or more predictable.

I was the same, I don't think it is ESP, just history repeating.

I don't know what he was doing while he was standing on deck, but I suspect he wasn't studying White's approach

i don't see how that reply could be called conclusive. It looked like Altuve's  toe could have been against the bag when he held the ball.

A couple of angles were hard to tell one way or the other but  I saw one in which it was clear he didn't touch the bag.

If there is a spray that will help reduce turnovers, they need to shower Harden with it.  If there is a spray that will help you play defence, they should marinate him in it.

Talk Zone / Re: Take out slides...
« on: October 14, 2015, 08:11:15 am »
Leaving the legal arguments aside for a moment…

A captivating part of baseball for me is the behaviour of the players.  I see players react to something as silly as a bat flip or some guys says something or even just looks at someone the wrong way and it’s on.  Benches clear and the bullpen runs over for a bunch of chest beating and macho bullshit.  You see a guy get his leg broken by (what I think is) a dirty play and no one does a damn thing.  WTF?  I don’t know the rules well enough to say if the slide was against the rules, if was not, I think the rules need to change.  To take a guy out who is in a defenceless position isn’t brave, this just seems to be an out-dated carry over of baseball machismo from years ago.  If someone wants to start a fight on the field, wouldn’t fault them for reacting to the Muttley play.  And the penalty for breaking a leg, finishing the guys season is two games?  If the fielder is between the bag and the runner he has to take his own chances, and I reckon if Tejada had to jump in the line of fire to make the play he probably would, most ball players would I guess but there should be some protection when you are opened up the way he was.  I don’t think eliminating that type of act softens the game, there is a difference between being tough and being dirty in my eyes.  If there is no bright line put one in.

Talk Zone / Re: The shift
« on: October 11, 2015, 04:52:49 am »
You have to remember that traditional defensive positioning is based on "metrics" too.  I don't think it'd be accurate to say you've abandoned the metric-driven approach if it's situationally dependent.

Ok, I take your point.  I have never really been a student of the game and when it comes to the shift, well sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.  If the formula says that a guy hits left or right against a certain type of pitching and we would 'normally' shift, does that change because a DP is in order and/or we need it real bad?  Are the metrics that advanced?  For me, it is more about sticking with what works, if I used a tactic for 162 games and had decent results, I am not should I would change from what has worked.  Has the shift worked for us this year?

1537
Talk Zone / Re: The shift
« on: October 11, 2015, 04:37:23 am »
Thinking more about shifts in, or shifts out,  you use them when? To reduce the chance of a runner at third when the.games on the line, or at the corners if a bunt's likely. Do you shift out to increase the likelihood of a double play?  Odd that I don't know. I guess the difference from lateral shifts is that they're based on a batters probabilities. I'd guess they help a pitcher like Keuchel's the most, where control is such a big part of the game.  Either way, sometimes you get beat.

You are right about that, it wont work all the time.  If you shift and get the result you want you are a genius, if not...

1538
Talk Zone / Re: The shift
« on: October 10, 2015, 07:16:56 pm »
I realize this management team believes in it and will keep doing it until the metrics do not favor it. A modification I would urge if I had a voice is to play a conventional DP alignment in those situations when a DP is desperately needed. That modification would have gotten us out of the 6th with a 4-3 lead.

Forgotten in all our hand-wringing over the change of fate in the 6th and 7th is the offense's going stagnant with Cueto on the ropes. Had Correa's liner to right been fair....

Ifs and buts galore

If you adopt the shift on account of the metrics, I think you have to go all in.  If you abandon the shift because of circumstances, does that mean you don't really believe the metrics?  If you go for the shift and it  doesn't work, you can always justify what you have done by the numbers, don't shift when you would normally but allow  the circumstances to influence your decision you have a better chance of looking like a dill.  Sydney or the bush...

1539

When will people learn to apologise properly?

“While it was intended to be humorous, I understand it has caused offence."

Wrong!  "I understand that it was offensive" is how you say it.

People take offense at anything and everything, and that's on them.  You said something actually offensive, that's on you.  It doesn't matter whether it caused offense or not, it's inherently offensive so you should apologise in that vein.

End of rant.

To apologise properly you have to mean it, he was trying to be a smart arse and I expect the only thing he is sorry about is having to apologise.  I actually thought the whole episode was pretty funny; the remark, predictable outrage and statement that is an apology, apparently.

So, my family (paternal side) have a family reunion every year around Thanksgiving.  Well, one of my cousins is organizing shirts and decided to go with a baseball theme because my Grandpa was scouted by the Cards.  A few things to know, #1 I probably watch the most baseball of everyone in my family--but a lot of them watch baseball, #2 my Grandpa did play baseball--but he grew up in a farming community (it's not even big enough for a city), #3 quite a few of my cousins played baseball both in high school and in the farming community my family is from.

There is no way in hell I would not have heard about my Grandpa being scouted by the Cards.  No way!!!!  All of my uncles talk baseball with me.  My cousins that played baseball would have known and they don't seem to know.  And the one that does know, didn't play baseball so why would anyone of told him that.

I'm thinking someone lied to him, but damn it would be really cool if he had been.  My grandpa was a tall lean farm boy.  So, maybe someone is keeping really good secrets.

I know with certainty that family history as told from generation to generation is rarely correct and gets somewhat embellished.

A little PBP

T4:

Reddick hammers an upper deck home run to RF
Valencia...arguing every pitch as he usually does...crushes a home run out of the stadium to LF
Lawrie strikes out looking
Butler grounds out 5-3
Muncy strikes out swinging

But the As get a pair on back to back monster home runs...Astros lead 3-2

Good move, it is old news by the time I post it.

Calhoun chops to Marwin to Lance. Marwin fields first well.
Trout walks.
Pujols ground rule double, runners at 2nd and 3rd. Mound visit. Pre-1930, a ground rule double was a home run.
Murphy flies shallow to 7.
Cron walks. Bases loaded.
Aybar lines to Marisnick.

I thought Lance was in a lot trouble, over the 100 pitch mark and it looked like he was fading fast but he hung in there nicely.

Star Wars day is part of the media campaign for the new Star Wars movie, which I think comes out in December. There was a pretty big event yesterday (maybe today? I'm in Asia so am not sure on the time difference) unveiling the new line of toys. There have been similar Star Wars themed things going on at a variety of big events, like ballgames.

My biggest worry was that after we no hit them last night, they would come back tonight and do the same thing to us. I felt a lot better after Jose took care of that early.  The last two nights have been my baseball ration for the week and it was pretty damn good.

Except when they drive me nuts.

Last night I re-watched the first three innings before going to bed.  I got up this morning and re-watched every video clip, read every article, re-read the GameZone.

The rest of the season is going to be fun.

I often read the GZ after the game, it is still fun even if you know the score.  GZ has been a good read this last week with walk offs and all.  Mind you, you need to be careful where and when you read, if you LOL on the bus or in air port lounges you get some pretty funny looks for the people around you.

I think he is good at the techncal part of the game and I like his connection to Astro history. Besides that he has many faults.

I had a number of years listening to Astros radio back in the days when we had dial up modems with long lags and incoming phone calls would bump the feed.  I actually liked Ashby on radio but when you can see what is going on you realise what he says doesn't always line up with what you see.  Not sure but I think he inserts a lot more of personal opinions these days and perhaps tries to come across a lot more intellectual than he used  to.

No. My wife and I met him and his wife and two other Aussies on a river cruise in Russia. The 6 of us became great friends.

Isn't Aussie Rules where there's a bar fight with occasional pauses for some guy to kick a ball into the air; then, when the ball comes down, the bar fight resumes? Also, there's some smartly dressed fellows with white Fedoras that pretend to shoot people with finger guns.

You no longer see the fedoras and lab coats but the way you describe it makes me think you have see a game at some point.

Absolutely typical.  People form opinions based on the facts at hand, perception and whatever baggage they carry around.  I expect that the stronger the feeling the more we dig for information, but some people don’t need much to form strong opinions.  It is the human condition, more information doesn’t necessarily lead to better understanding.  It is a good start but not guaranteed. I don’t have a strong opinion on this business yet, maybe I never will.

Because they committed wire fraud and racketeering in the US, and the FBI is the law enforcement agency that investigates those crimes.  Sounds like you're upset they've been caught and are being prosecuted.  Not sure how to respond to that.

If you look at headlines in our press all you get is that a lot of people are under investigation for corruption.  If I cared anything at all about soccer or FIFA I expect I could find out the detail but I think that a lot of casual observers (like me) look at it and think the US would have bigger fish to fry.  At the end of the day, if it is proved that these people have committed crimes and get punished, fair enough.

Mainly because they like basketball.

I really love basketball, perhaps even more than baseball.  BUT, the NBA can be pretty hard to watch sometimes, it is far too player oriented rather than basketball oriented.  If anyone has doubts about that, just listen to some the shit that dribbles out of the commentators mouths sometimes (JVG for example).  It drives me crazy that the league has the worlds best players, game format etc etc but anyone who has watched how the game has changed, particularly few decades could go on a 3 page rant about everything wrong with the NBA.  But, I don't see the situation changing, not for better anyway.  I just enjoy it when the Rockets win and hope one day that I can find one of those men in black mind erasers so I can eliminate the travel rule from my memory and be able to enjoy the game a little more.

Rockets get to within 5 late in the 3Q, but the Clipper close the quarter on an 18-0 run.  Rockets looking pathetic.

I would have to check the scale but I think a 15 – 20 surrender is pathetic, this was more like pitiful or wretched.  Damn ugly to watch too, if I want to see a game turn into a foul shooting contest, I would want to see the best, not worst foul shooters shoot it out.  This fouling players off the ball is blight on the game and the NBA is allowing the game to become farcical.

I have no opinion on the Bodie matter, but to claim it as an "outrage du jour" is similar to creating a narrative she decries against. Lots of people feel like they need to choose sides, and many who have chosen the Luhnow side seem compelled to create a narrative that numerous media members are out to get Luhnow.  Its starting to border on paranoia.

It is not paranoia if they are really out to get you.

I've been to Kalgoorlie. It kind of looks like an Old West town. I remember a large antique piece of furniture in a shop's foyer on the main street through town. According to a plaque, it was given around the turn of the (last) century by an American engineer to the ladies of one of the town's better brothels. The engineer, who worked in the local mining industry for a time, was named Herbert Hoover.

Still a lot of mining in the area.

I worked the last couple of days at the Mining Hall of Fame in Kal, I see Herbie is enshrined there.  Apparently his contribution was in mine engineering and financial structure in mining, no mention of brothels.

I'm wondering when, in the ninth inning of a one-run game, has a manager let a reliever walk four batters in a row.

When I say, as I do occasionally, that the Astros are not trying to win this is what I mean. That they literally are not trying to win.

Also, on another of my favorite topics, I tune in to hear the soothing, familiar sound of Dierk's voice. Literally the second I tune in I find that he and Ash are talking about hot dogs. Fuck me, I mean, seriously. The Astros don't care about winning? That's fine. I don't care if they win. BUT QUIT TALKING ABOUT FOOD, FUCK.

Although it was awfully nice to hear Dierker call the game.

I am going to Kalgoorlie for a couple of days and probably wont check the scores, it is getting too hard to think about these guys again.  Not sure if they have hot dogs in Kal? I will let you know when I have found out.

I'm still trying to figure out what in the hell the Sox catcher was doing there. He gets the throw from Pedroia, and at that point he is standing right on home plate. Petit isn't even in the picture yet as he's still 15-20 feet from home. Instead of placing himself in between Petit and home plate, he runs in a fucking semi-circle out towards the mound and then back towards the base line, allowing Petit to run past him toward home.

The catcher actually then made a very nice heads-up quick flip to the pitcher covering home, but I just can't figure out what in the fuck he was thinking, circling around the runner like that. Totally bizarre play.

And of course there's also the question of why the hell Petit was trying to score at all, because he should have been out by a mile and that's a terrible way to end a rally.

Lastly, great job by Fowler beating what should have been an easy 6-4 force play.

If they had a chance to do  it again, I expect Bogaerts would just go to first and try to nail the fleet-footed Dominguez.  It all went down hill from there... dick steppin' with golf shoes on.

The games where we have a lead and then piss it away are hard to take, when we give up an early lead it seems to be easier to accept the fate.  I going out to the shed, pick up the club hammer and find something that needs to be hit really hard a few times.

Okay, everyone who is not already in the SnS fantasy football league. You are fucking up. But there is hope, there are openings for more players. It's a fun league. We have 31.438% more fun than the average fantasy football league. You should really give it a try. You can't get hurt and you might like it. It makes football season about 83.36% more fun and the void about 34.59% more fun. So if you don't like more fun you don't have to do a damn thing but if it's more fun you are seeking, you better join the league. Just PM DVauthrin or me, or Mr. Happy, or Chuck, or Austro, or Andy Zipp, or UTAstro...

I went to a micro brewery in the Swan Valley for lunch a couple of weeks ago and got a pork shank on a plate of sauerkraut and damn it was good.  That plus 2 litre steins of beer rendered me unconscious for most of the afternoon. Next time it will be pork bellies, they know how to cook pig in that place.  As for wine, I will  leave that for everyone else.

Matt Dominguez is nowhere in the vicinity of why this team sucks. I'm trying to figure out how this trade makes the Astros better in 2019 or whenever it is they're expected to stop sucking.

+ 1.  At some point you need decide who are the keepers, unless the strategy is to keep trading until we have a MVP at each position?

I have an X-Trail which are unknown in the US but reasonably common in Australia as you know. They're ubiquitous here which is one reason I bought it. I figured I ran a pretty good chance of finding someone who could repair it. Happily all I've ever had to have done is a little body work. I'm considering an upgrade. I don't really need to upgrade. But I find myself wanting a few small things here and there that the car doesn't offer. But I surely won't be buying a Jaguar.

A young girl in son's circle of friends got a brand new X-Trail a few weeks ago, everyone calls it the entrails and she gets mad as hell.

That's a pretty sweet looking ride, isn't it? I had it muted, of course, but the aerial view of London caught my attention and I saw the car. I'm relieved that the reality of the situation here is such that I would never be tempted to buy a car like that.

Every now and then I see some goon driving around in a Maserati or a Ferrari or something like that and I think, Man, you must drive down different streets than I do. Plus, I have idiots clip my side-view mirrors all the time. As long as they don't shatter the glass I enjoy rolling down the window and insulting them loudly. Fortunately traffic is generally at a virtual standstill so I have plenty of time to share my remarks. But fuck, if I were tooling around in a Quattroporte I might actually get agitated.

I drive an FJ Cruiser, much more my speed.  Youngest son drives a Nissan 370, he looks hard at the Jag commercial and sort of narrows his eyes.  I know what he is thinking but they are about $140k down here I think.

Some would argue that playing the National Anthem before every pissant sporting event itself cheapens it and if it were brought out only on special occasions it would regain the dignity it may have lost. Just curious, is Advance Australia Fair played before all sporting events there?

We don't play the anthem too often. The national baseball comp has the anthem before every game but for most sporting events it is only finals or Anzac day.  I actually like the way it is done in US, other than the occasional painful rendition, sometimes less is more.

At times I feel like an outsider looking in, this is one of those times.  MLB and the clubs seem to quite rightly put a lot into making the National Anthem respectful and dignified and straight after it is done, these guys appear to be taking the piss...  My initial reaction was that they should knock it off and stop clowning the ceremony.

Nice recap, counselor. I strongly suspect that Keuchel is a six inning three earnie per night pitcher in the end. Bobby Goldsboro? I haven't heard that name since I was a kid. I remember his sad song "Honey" well. My parents had the 45. (No, you young fucks-I will not explain what a "45" is-just google it). I never liked that song and was always glad when it mercifully ended. I preferred my dad's Luke the Drifter (a/k/a Hank Williams) album. My favorite song on the 78 (again, go away, you young whippersnappers) was "I've Been Down That Road Before." I have it on my ipod. It's great advice for life. There are many times in my life when I should have listened to that advice.

I go to the Galaxy Song for inspiration (and dealing with gratuitous dumbfuckery).

According to baseball-reference.com, at the moment they're 14th in the AL in runs (494) and earned runs (452), but I doubt that includes tonight's effort. But they'll have to up their game to become one of the truly awful teams. It looks like last year they gave up 82 (848-766) unearned runs, and in 2012 they gave up 73 (794-721). At their current rate, they'll give up 785 runs, 718 of them unearned, or 67 unearned runs. The mighty Rays apparently gave up 106 unearned runs in 2001. I'm too lazy to try to figure out a comprehensive list of the worst offenders, but they rate better than I would have expected.

I reckon there are actually a lot more unearned runs than the stats show, scorers don't appear to be too hard on fielders.

I can't conceive of a way he could be worse than Zeid.

He would stand out more on a decent team.

I'm sure Zeid is a nice guy. And he's light years more talented at baseball than I ever was. But I don't see how they can keep him in the majors any longer.

He is no orphan... Bass springs to mind.

Bass replaced by Zeid.

A's score 4 in the 8th, lead 13 -1 after 8.

This is starting to get hard to watch.

Bass walks his next batter. Starting to wonder if he is going to make an out or just wait for them to die from old age or something.

Bass loads the bases with a hbp and gives up a grand slam on the very next pitch.
