Never really understood how Fiers remarks surfaced, did he run off at the gob when someone shoved a mic in front of him or did he go knocking on their door?

I agree that this is going on elsewhere, but until there is a Fiers, willing to put his name in public against another team, the Astos are toast.

Fock Fiers.   Has he turned in his WS ring and check from 2017 yet?

Excellent point.

Five whistling bench guys,
Seven banging garbage cans,
Five butthurt Yankees.

It's even meta-descriptive, which I'm pretty sure was Homer's point in the first place.

Right, it was obviously a little early in the day.

Let's go over the signs again: 5 whistles, 7 thumps, 5 crying yankees fans

If you could have massaged that into haiku format, I would declare you the winner right now.

Too be fair he didn't say the Astros didn't want it he just said the Nats wanted it more. The Nats maybe wanted it 110% and the Astros only wanted it 109.99%...

Yeah, the guy was not bagging the good guys, it is funny (not sure that is the right word?) how a throwaway line has triggered so many people, make of that what you will.  I guess we will all make our conclusions about what happened eventually and come to terms with it.  I look back nearly a week after a really painful game 7 loss and I can give the gnats a half an ounce of credit for… oops, cliché free zone, right?  I don’t think that denigrates the Astros in any way.

I’m in Kalgoorlie for the week so I can’t get to it for a few days, but when I dump this poor bastard at sea, do you want me to chum the water as well?

Talk Zone / Re: Hinch’s decisions and thinking/G7

Total bullshit. They were more fortunate in a key situation and the Astros were in theirs.

“Wanted it more” is worse than lame. It is the excuse of the clueless.

Is it worse that we were unlucky? Heard a fair bit of that.

Talk Zone / Re: Hinch’s decisions and thinking/G7

This season the main thing I worried about,  besides injuries,  happened: the Astros didn't play their best in the postseason.

That's what gnaws at me right now.

Talked to a guy I didn't know before today, a Rockies fan who recognised my Astros and asked me what happened?  I just said they blew a great opportunity for another title.  His explanation, the gnats just wanted it more...  it sounds cliche maybe, but hard to argue.

Yep saw that.  Like that Grienke said that.

It was really special watching him yesterday.

And that "ball" was horrible in a huge spot.  The robots are coming.  This crew went a long way to ending the most iconic part of their profession.

From the random bits I have seen on ESPN, I thought it was only the gnats that got shitty calls?

I gave myself last night to pout, and I did a lot of pouting from about the 8th inning until I fell asleep watching Peaky Blinders around 1am.

Today I look forward to the 2020 season. And I should probably put in a little effort toward finding a new job, as my old one ended yesterday afternoon.

Can you pitch?  I think I know where there will be an opening...

MLB is now launching a full scale investigation into the incident.

Also the Baseball Writers Association is calling for the Astros to publicly apologize for the incident.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have three apology rules -

1. Any apology that has to be forced is not worth the paper it is written on,

2. The word sorry is mandatory, and

3. If you are only sorry that someone is upset and not that you actually did it, it is not really an apology.

Not that I apologise too much anyway...

62
Great find.

He may be a Yankee fan,  but he is an exceptional baseball fan.

He is a lot better when he is dealing with non-yankme material.

63
The home run ball bounced off the giant wall and back on to the field. Yankees leftfielder Brett Gardner picked it up. He saw Houston bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte walking past him toward the pile of Astros gathering at home plate.

“Here,” Gardner said, handing him the ball. “Take this. You guys are a great team. Now go win the World Series. Represent the American League well.”

Said Bracamonte, “It was so classy. And Aaron Judge gave me a hug and said the same thing. I have so much respect for those guys.”

Bracamonte later gave the ball to an MLB authenticator.

Don't be too hard on the guy, it is the masterful job of framing the pitches that is fooling him.

81
B1:

LeMahieu crushes a center cut fastball over the wall in RCF
Judge singles to LF
Torres doubles to LF, Judge to 3B
Stanton...full count...strikes out swinging
Hicks...0-2...1-2...2-2...3-2...homers to RF...ball hit the pole...Judge scores, Torres scores...hanging cement mixer right over the center of the plate
Sanchez strikes out swinging
Gregorius pops out F5

But the damage done...4-1 Yankees

Only a flesh wound, a lot of baseball left in this game.

82
What is the cupping ear thing Correa does all about?

So, I watched the game again (that was too good to see only once) and turned the sound up at that point.  It sounded like Carlos was booing as he was doing the ear cup thing... I believe he really enjoyed ruining the evening of about 50k motherfucker yankme fans.

Kiermaier played for the Canberra Cavalry in the ABL, and that is unforgivable.

Absoulutely.  Of course, I have personal reasons, but if not for the Astros, I'd easily be a Rays fan.

I liked the old days when the Astros were my NL team and the Rays were my AL team.  No question which team is number one for me but I am glad they don't play in the same division.

In spite of the idiocy of intentionally walking the tying run, the Dodgers leave the bases loaded and the Nats get out of L.A. with a 4-2 win and the split.

I thought Bellinger would have been the one to pitch around, but you can't argue with the result.

Leadoff walk,  stolen base (initially called out, replay overturned; for some reason he didn't slide), strikeout, runner moved to third, winning run scores on a fielding error by Tucker at 1st.

That you do, and so do I. I’ve never seen barramundi anywhere else. I liked the Moreton Bay bugs, too.
There is a lot of barra on the domestic market that is farmed in Asia, I can’t pick any difference between farmed and wild caught.  Barra is pretty nice to eat but better to catch, I think most folks would rate it mid-tier?  Morton Bay bugs are great, if I had to pick a last meal, it would be a big juicy sirloin steak with a bug (or two) on top, smothered in a creamy garlic sauce.

I not only prefer salt water fish, I prefer fresh cold water fish as well. I eat a lot of Salmon. Prefer wild caught Pacific salmon. Also like Steelhead Cod and Halibut. That's not to say I don't like freshwater or warm water fish, just prefer the fish caught in colder waters. Don't care much for the reconstituted dried cod dishes that are popular in Portugal and other places.
I guess taste it is a pretty individual thing, we are pretty lucky that we have a lot of cod, groper and sea perch varieties you can catch.  Can be expensive to buy, some of the prized fish are up to $80 per kg.  I catch a lot more than I buy.

Lately I've been eating mullet every chance I get. I never understood why it's considered a trash fish; the filets are beautiful. Although it doesn't get much respect here, either. It's called 'bobo,' which means stupid.
Mullet is a fish some people say tastes too fishy.  I like them grilled, they are a bit oily to begin with so I think frying them is a mistake.  We don't eat a lot of mullet because there are so may demersal species that are a lot better. I take we are talking about similar fish?

Catfish and largemouth bass. The catfish I catch are usually less than 3 pounds (1.3 Kg), I've caught as big as 17 (7.7 Kg). They are good eating when fried but I usually just allow them to go gently back in the water.

I ate catfish a few times when I was in the US, I thought it was pretty nice, it has a very subtle taste as I remember.  I actually prefer saltwater fish, we have a lot of mighty fine seafood down here.  I would definitely go out for those big guys, love the sound of the drag screaming.

These are catfish of the eating kind, right?  What size are they, I believe they grow pretty big.

I have no idea if people catch fish in the surf here. I rarely see people fishing in the surf. A few people have told me that they do and have success, but I've never seen it.

I have had very minor success on other beaches around here, but I've never really paid any attention to the time and tides. The place where we are is directly in front of a large rock formation that you can walk on during low tide and gets covered up more or less at high tide. The beach to the left has fewer waves, smaller, less frequent waves, and I decided to fish there. There's quite a current sweeping from the rocks to the left, I could feel it in the rods, and I have noticed it swimming out there, and it could be that there just simply aren't any bait fish in that current so close to the rocks.

I'll try the other side of the rock formation later. I'll also walk farther down the beach; there's a small river that empties into the ocean maybe a third of a mile down the beach, and I imagine the fishing is better down there. I'll also experiment with different rigs.

It isn’t a very good sign if there are few fishermen, you tend to see fishermen if there is any prospect of catching something.  In fact, you often see fishermen trying their luck when there are fuck all fish around.

A few years ago, I started using an app with forecasts for optimum bite times based on tides, solar and lunar data.  It isn’t perfect but it is a reasonable predictor when you factor in local conditions.  After using the app for a few months, I was so impressed I lashed out and spent 5 bucks on the ad free version.

Shore based fishing is generally less productive than boat fishing but at least you don’t have to worry about having too many beers and falling overboard.

182
I had a maiden voyage of surf fishing at the new crib the other day and it was a resounding failure. Perfect time, perfect tide, nothing.

That's all very well, but someone needs to tell the fish that the time and tides are perfect...

Armed Forces - Elvis Costello

I used to work on the insurance program for Woodside, who had an interest in fields in offshore Western Australia, including the North Rankin field.  We got a safety report for insurers and in it was described the rationale for cancelling man overboard drills.  It seems that the dummies they would throw off the platform and then pretend to rescue were ripped apart by sharks within seconds of hitting the water.  That was not good news.  Was was good news was that insurers didn't have to worry about workers on the platform using their safety harnesses and holding the handrails.

Well if you run out of dummies, you could  always use a cubs fan.

That's a reasonable assumption regarding rugby league, but I'm actually not a mungo.  I'm a rugby union man and proud alumnus of Eastern Suburbs RFC in Bondi.  I beleve that makes me part of the tweed blazer brigade.

First visited Australia in 1995 after graduating high school.  That may have been when I first heard the term bogan.  I've honestly never heard of ocker.

I never really like rugby too much, but if I had to play / watch it, I am pretty sure that union would be the code to pick.  How does the expression go - union is a thugs game played by gentlemen, and league is a gentlemens' game played by thugs.  Or something like that...  Useless trivia time, a member of the Canadian national rugby union team played AFL in the national comp for a few years and was pretty decent.  I wondered if he was a real rugby player though, he had a neck.

Pom was an easy enough term to come up with (ETA: when I played rugby in Sydney back in 2003, any time I called one of the Brits on the team a limey, none of the Aussies or Kiwis knew what the hell I was talking about).  Trying to think of something for Australians left me with bogan.  Highly doubt you are one, given your literacy rate and support of the Houston Astros.

I haven't seen either Bogan Hunters or Fat Pizza.  However, having worked Harvest in the Hunter Valley, I'm fairly certain I can accurately guess what they're about.

If you played rugby in Sydney (League I am guessing?) you certainly rubbed shoulders with bogan royalty.

Folks my age tend to refer to an unpolished Australians as an 'ocker', bogan is only a fairly recent addition to our vernacular.

Four pages of discussion concerning a topic on which I have pronounced opinions, opinions I am unafraid to share, yet I contributed silence. I wonder what the hell was going on with me in June of 2012. Maybe we had a day-long power outage. Maybe I was in jail.

Crap, I just read four pages of a six year old thread?  Can't help feeling like I have been pranked.

Beer and Queso / Re: New Android Phone
« on: October 24, 2018, 05:48:30 pm »
So some first impressions (over the first few hours):

1.  It was easy enough to get the new phone started up.  Just swapped the SIM card, and it took about 10 minutes before I could dial and receive, but looks like no problems there.
2.  Had to re-download all of my apps, but it was just sitting there, redownloading.  It's not like I had to walk 10 miles through the snow, uphill, to get them.
3.  Docs, photos, etc transferred with a breeze.
4.  Have not tried to move any music, but I may not.  I still have my iPod for that.
5.  Group texting is not possible through the standard, pre-installed texting app, which kind of sucks.  Mrs. Hawk has always said that was an impediment to her going Android (she's a texting machine, it's all part of the the Northwest Harris County Barbie Collector's Cheap Wine and Cigarettes Club, apparently), but I downloaded Textra, made it the default text app, and all seems to be going swimmingly.
6.  For the most part everything is fairly intuitive, and it is quite customizable.
7.  Battery life seems to be OK, but I'll know more as the days wear on.
8.  There is a large amount of shit at the top of the home screen that I've yet to figure out.  I suppose I will.  It does come pre-installed with a lot of google shit, but it's not too onerous to remove.

I'm sure I'll have more to bitch about later.  But I'm liking getting this level of performance in a non-plastic phone for about 30% of the cost of a new iPhone.

My last three phones have been Xperias, I would be saying my latest phone is an Xperia if I could stop dropping them in the fuckin' ocean.  I like only having to charge every two or three days, that was the clincher for me.  I can group text ok and some of the shit on the home screen just sits there and we are ignoring each other.

Note to self, never read the comments.  I hate Red Sox fans.  Yeah, the Astros lost and yeah, Bostom is a good team.  But, don't think we won't support our team and think they are great.  I would expect no less from any fan.  I don't know how both teams lose the WS, but I hope they do.

I like readers comments, I often take a look without even reading the article.  The comments can be e lot more entertaining than the article and a lot of times will reveal  the writer as one-eye, a complete dickhead or both.   I also think of various scenarios that has both teams losing... but I am a bit of a hater.

Auckland has a team this year. So does Geelong. I guess adding teams means the league is doing well.

The national comp has had a few ups and downs over the years, including shutting down for a number of years.  WA is problematic, some great teams come out of the west but the travel adds considerable cost to a semi professional league.

Geelong should be interesting, they will be a Korean team based in Geelong apparently.  The Asian style of baseball is fun, we get to see a variety of Asian teams when they visit to play warm up games ahead of international tournaments.  As for the Auckland team, I guess we will just have to lock up our sheep when they re in town...

No one is actually addressing the point Mr Hap made though, why is it that neither of the main parties can put up a candidate that is able to beat a guy who is not even a politician?  You can drag out all the bumper sticker explanations with all the ‘isims’ you like, but I don’t think they explain it.  When nearly half the voters in the country take him over whatever else was on offer, I don’t think you can just say it is just the lunatic fringe.

I may have made this observation before, but there appears to be very little objectivity in US politics (or this thread).  I am not too savvy on how your political systems work but I know a partisan shit show when I see one.  In 2018, you are either a smelly transgender hippy who is really a disguised communist or an evil old white guy that wants to revert to days of slavery and keep the women folk under control and in the kitchen.  No middle ground, choose which camp you are in.  If I am in one of these camps and you say something that doesn’t align to how I think, then fuck you, you are in the other camp and don’t even try to explain anything to me, I’m not listening.

In baseball discussions, folks seem to be somewhat skeptical, suspicious and cynical, not so much in this thread.  So, back to original question how did Trump get elected?

Chili is chili. If one adds an additional appellation to it, then it is chili plus or minus, something. e.g., Chili with Beans, Vegetarian Chili. White Chili. Why is this so difficult to understand?

If my bowl of corn flakes identifies as a bowl of chili, why can't it be called is a bowl of chili?

So, my wife walks in on me watching one of the Sharknado movies and quizzically asks, “WTF?” (which, for the some of you that have met her is funny in it own right) and I simply reply, “I’m a meteorologist”. She walked out without saying a word.

How would you explain if she walked in and you were watching Moby Dick: 2010?

Regardless of how stupid it is, it's been said.  It's also stupid because the Rockets were the one team that had shown it could handle Jordan's Bulls; it was the Sonics they couldn't beat.

Yes, any Championship stands on its own, but beating arguably the three most storied franchises in the sport for your first is the stuff o' legend, and unimpeachable.

I've heard the asterisk BS, but hearing the lamentations of haters and whinny bitches just makes the victory so much sweeter for me.

No one with any credibility or a thimble full of sense suggests the Rockets' championships are somehow "cheap", even ignoring the fact that Jordan was in the league for the second one.

Yes Sir.  You play whoever shows up, when you have beaten them all, you're the champions.  End of discussion.

That's the fewest errors by any team in MLB since 2013. Sure helps that the pitching staff only allowed 2-3 balls in play per game.

I wonder if scorers have always been as generous to the fielders as they are now?  I have seen a number of times I would have marked and error against the fielder, but the scorer saw it differently.

Brian McTaggart  @brianmctaggart 1h ago
Verlander will pitch a full game, probably not going past 100 pitches, though. He's in the Cy Young race and the Astros are going to give him a chance to pad his numbers.

Snell will make his last start for the year tonight, no doubt he will be looking for a big finish in a game that means nothing in the grand scheme.

New pitcher for the O's in T8.

Kemp pops up the bunt for out #1 but Marisnick and Tucker follow with walks. 1 out with LSU guy at the plate.

Infield base hit for Bregman loads bases (and keeps his road on-base streak alive).

Marwin singles to left, Marisnick scores to give the club first lead of the night at 2-1. Tucker had a better read on the ball than Gary Pettis (or knew of DJ Stewart's less than stellar athleticism) and could have also scored.

Did Jake misread the play?

Then he should be on the DL, not hitting 4th or 5th in the lineup.  It doesn't make him a bad person but results matter, and Correa simply has not delivered since his return.  It's not helping the team win to keep running him out there if he's physically unable to contribute at an acceptable level.

I find it hard to believe there is a big physical issue, his range in the field and the way he unloads those throws look pretty good.

Correa and Marwin both single to bring home White and it's 3-1 Astros. Mid 3.

I think the key part was that we were unable to GIDP no matter how hard we tried.... hope JV has got it together now.

Jake just bailed Charlie out, but Charlie has got to stop doing this.  He has too many starts where he looks dominant for three to four innings, then he implodes.

Vazquez should have been called out on three straight, Charlie couldn't get the call and seems to have got rattled.

No, sir. The only hard liquor I can remember drinking in Australia ever was at a bar near the central market in Adelaide that had some special gin that allegedly was made according to some old seafarer's recipe and it was supposed to be especially strong. It was a house specialty apparently and so I ordered it. I don't remember its being any different from any other gin, really.

I assume Australian rum production is largely if not exclusively in Queensland.

Yes, Qld largely on account of Bundaberg Rum.  WA contributes Canefire and Ord River rum, Canefire is well named.  I got a bottle of Ord River when I was in Kununurra recently but haven't opened it yet, it comes from a funny little hoochery that grows its own sugar cane.  Some of their products are pretty damn expensive, I wouldn't pay $350 for a bottle of rum too often.

Squid ink ice cream is a not unpopular item in Japan.   And here's the Dallas Observer's recipe for peach and calamari ice cream.

Squid ink reminds me of when I took a couple of good ol’ boys from Houston out on my boat and we caught a bunch of squid.  They kept getting ink shots over them as they brought them in the boat.  The first one was funny because both the boys froze like it was a gunshot.  When I thanked him for not letting the ink get all over the boat they figured out it was probably not lethal.  The boys got the ultimate revenge though, we took the little bastards home and ate them.

Even worse call in the TB game tonight I think, I don't remember them taking so long on such an easy call and still fuck it up.  Choi had a what looked like a home run taken away because of fan interference, it was a horrible call I think.  I don't blame the umps for not getting right in the first place but why use replays if you get it wrong in the end anyway?

It boggles my mind that fans of any team anywhere actually like that guy.

More or less mind boggling than liking Carlos 'the great clubhouse guy' Gomez?

3 ABs after the double, not a threatening swing among them.

It looked like George missed the 1-1 pitch by a couple of feet.

Ouch. I thought he took that off the schnozz at first.

If the official scorer had a sense of humor he would have called it an error.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah, 5 runs in the 7th, 8th & 9th... between that and the Astros showing a bit of power it is a pretty good morning  of baseball.

So, everyone’s favourite former Astro (Gomez) just rounded the bases in Minnesota.  Why does he hit his helmet as he passes each base, was that ever explained?

Bregman swung the bat at the ball. An angel from heaven came down with a heavenly choir sing “Hosanna! Alleluia!” The catcher Lucroy crossed himself but noticed that the ball through divine providence was dribbling down the first base line  He reached for the ball but a raven landed on it. “Nevermore!” quoth the raven. Lucroy, startled, nonetheless picked up the ball to tag out Bregman, but the brilliant light emitted by Bregman startled him and Lucroy bobbled the ball.  Bregman, hoisted by the heavenly chorus, was carried down the line toward first. Lucroy tried to make the play to first but the Bregman force field diverted the ball towards the Romulun cruiser. Safe. Astros win.

You really should have seen it.

When Lucroy lost the ball trying to make the tag, did it hit the ump in the chest or was I seeing things?

Game Zone 2018 / Re: White Sox at Houston 07/05/2018

Well, that was a fucking let down.

471
Rays finally put in their pocket...what a crazy game.

I would be happy to see the Astros back in the NL.

472
And Straily walks...NOW the tying run to the plate in the form of ex-Astros Cameron Maybin...

Normally I would be hoping he would tie it up with a HR, but I have work I have to finish.

473
Alvarado is tomorrow's starter...trying to avoid using him.

A day game too, just to make it better.

474
And now catcher, Jesus Sucre in to try to close it out for the Rays...

I thought Alvarado was warming up, this is crazy.

475
Rays plate five runs in the top of the 16th, including an RBI by the pitcher, Vidal Nuno...who immediately pulled his hamstring running to 1B, and had to leave the game.

I was reminded of the top of the 9th in Game 7 last November, when CFM strode to the dish...only thing I was thinking was "whatever you do, don't swing the fucking bat!"

Anyone that can, should watch the top of the 16th in this game, NL baseball is great.

476
Marlins waste a leadoff double in the 15th...on to 16...

I lost track of this game and couldn't work out why the pitcher was hitting... makes sense now though.

477
I watched an hour of the TB game before the Astros started, I am going back to it now in the middle of the 15th.

478
Dang, I will normally only feel that sort of anxiety in the 9th.

479
Are we gonna see tumbleweeds blow past behind the ump?

480
I hate the Dutch.

I hate hyphenated names, but it is not that high on a pretty fucking big list.

Prick or prickly, take your pick. But a great sci-fi author (one of my favorites) and some of his quotes are more relevant than ever:

"The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity."

"Everybody has opinions: I have them, you have them. And we are all told from the moment we open our eyes, that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Well, that’s horsepuckey, of course. We are not entitled to our opinions; we are entitled to our informed opinions. Without research, without background, without understanding, it’s nothing. It’s just bibble-babble. It’s like a fart in a wind tunnel, folks."

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, HIS opinion, man

By far the worst thing about that homer was seeing that little prick Odor bouncing around afterward.
