I agree that this is going on elsewhere, but until there is a Fiers, willing to put his name in public against another team, the Astos are toast.
Fock Fiers. Has he turned in his WS ring and check from 2017 yet?
Five whistling bench guys,
Seven banging garbage cans,
Five butthurt Yankees.
It's even meta-descriptive, which I'm pretty sure was Homer's point in the first place.
Let's go over the signs again: 5 whistles, 7 thumps, 5 crying yankees fans
Too be fair he didn't say the Astros didn't want it he just said the Nats wanted it more. The Nats maybe wanted it 110% and the Astros only wanted it 109.99%...
Total bullshit. They were more fortunate in a key situation and the Astros were in theirs.
“Wanted it more” is worse than lame. It is the excuse of the clueless.
This season the main thing I worried about, besides injuries, happened: the Astros didn't play their best in the postseason.
That's what gnaws at me right now.
Yep saw that. Like that Grienke said that.
It was really special watching him yesterday.
And that "ball" was horrible in a huge spot. The robots are coming. This crew went a long way to ending the most iconic part of their profession.
I was saving it for whatever offseason thread appeared but I’m excited about a healthy McCullers.
I gave myself last night to pout, and I did a lot of pouting from about the 8th inning until I fell asleep watching Peaky Blinders around 1am.
Today I look forward to the 2020 season. And I should probably put in a little effort toward finding a new job, as my old one ended yesterday afternoon.
Insightful commentary.
Onward through the void.
By the score, they were playing Quidditch.
If I recall, you weren't able to watch game 7 in 2017.
Consequently, just like game 7 in 2017, I will miss the first hour or so.
I consider these good omens.
Cole had zero interest in that milquetoast interview post-game.
Nobody was around to hear it but 3-1 to Springer I said "give it a ride George"...well, my dog heard but he didn't give a shit.
Humble and optimistic. Or if you prefer, optimistic and humble.
Back to prior lead, coulda had more
Holy shit. This ump sucks.

Settle down...play it like a 1-run game.
I give Jose all the rope he wants. He's got carte blanche with me
Urquidy's better off swinging.
OutSTANding.
Remember when the bottom of the order used to kick ass and produce runs like the 3-4-5 in other teams' lineups? Now would be an OK time to get back to that.
In my opinion, two runs is twice as good as one run.

OK, I call for no posts in this thread during the game....got 15 minutes,
Went fishing this morning. Caught a fish.
MLB is now launching a full scale investigation into the incident.
Also the Baseball Writers Association is calling for the Astros to publicly apologize for the incident.

Great find.
He may be a Yankee fan, but he is an exceptional baseball fan.
The home run ball bounced off the giant wall and back on to the field. Yankees leftfielder Brett Gardner picked it up. He saw Houston bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte walking past him toward the pile of Astros gathering at home plate.
“Here,” Gardner said, handing him the ball. “Take this. You guys are a great team. Now go win the World Series. Represent the American League well.”
Said Bracamonte, “It was so classy. And Aaron Judge gave me a hug and said the same thing. I have so much respect for those guys.”
Bracamonte later gave the ball to an MLB authenticator.
Good Verducci article
Not as cool (for the player involved):
Jonathan Villar played on the 111 loss 2013 Astros and the 108 loss 2019 Orioles.
It doesn't seem possible but I believe by the end of this series I will hate Brett Gardner even more than I already do.
I like walk offs.
Sick is more like it.

Does he come back out for the 8th?Yes, if I had to decide.
Lots of baseball to be played. Need a good game from JV tonight, and will someone PLEASE rattle the bats!

Lots of guys who are dicks don't really bother me at all. We've been over this a bit. But for some reason Gardner fills me with uncontrollable rage.

Replay showed it was nowhere close. That much deviation off the bounce would be devastating in cricket.
Fuck the Cavalry. FTC.
Yep.
Defense is worth it while the bat comes around.
Absoulutely. Of course, I have personal reasons, but if not for the Astros, I'd easily be a Rays fan.
I am filled with hate this time of year. I hate the Yankees.
I walked 10 miles around the neighborhood while listening to the first 7 innings.
I will keep doing this for day games.
Actually, what I said was “My name is not dude.” Chuck can call me anything he wants and frequently does.
In spite of the idiocy of intentionally walking the tying run, the Dodgers leave the bases loaded and the Nats get out of L.A. with a 4-2 win and the split.
Hey Yodan,
HIT THE FUCKING BALL!!
What time is it?
Good fundamental baserunning by the Astros, btw.
Batman's a scientist.
Can’t win playing sloppy baseball. I sure hate that chant.
I forget why I had soured so much on McLain... Oh yeah, it was that time he held Selig’s dick when they fucked Crane into the AL. FWIW I’m over the AL switch.

Ha.
He broke his bat over his knee earlier today.
He's got all week to work on stuff.
I don't know what Alvarez needs to do but I'd like him to do it.
Do the Astros not want to score any runs today?
NY clobbering the popup droppers 8-2.
Honest effort on every play.
Both teams fell short of that standard.
Just saw the replay.
Leadoff walk, stolen base (initially called out, replay overturned; for some reason he didn't slide), strikeout, runner moved to third, winning run scores on a fielding error by Tucker at 1st.
Oh well.
Kyle Tucker is fucking brutal.
Astros get their first hit, an infield single by Straw, but they're appear pretty disinterested to this point.
Toro fielded that a few feet from 3B.
If he sprinted across the infield could he have reached first before Pujols?
JJ Man Choi hits a WOHR to beat the Yanks.
Choi wins it with walk off homer.
Oh, and, man, a 10:10pm start is a killer. Next three nights too. Bleh.
Nonetheless, he has to one of the guys. I would not include Miley on the postseason roster.
Verlander and Cole and pray for....
Miley is a wreck. He’s out after getting three outs. I feel bad for him, but they absolutely cannot let him pitch in the postseason.
He's got the first inning blues something fierce recently. I can't explain it.
That you do, and so do I. I’ve never seen barramundi anywhere else. I liked the Moreton Bay bugs, too. There is a lot of barra on the domestic market that is farmed in Asia, I can’t pick any difference between farmed and wild caught. Barra is pretty nice to eat but better to catch, I think most folks would rate it mid-tier? Morton Bay bugs are great, if I had to pick a last meal, it would be a big juicy sirloin steak with a bug (or two) on top, smothered in a creamy garlic sauce.
I not only prefer salt water fish, I prefer fresh cold water fish as well. I eat a lot of Salmon. Prefer wild caught Pacific salmon. Also like Steelhead Cod and Halibut. That's not to say I don't like freshwater or warm water fish, just prefer the fish caught in colder waters. Don't care much for the reconstituted dried cod dishes that are popular in Portugal and other places.I guess taste it is a pretty individual thing, we are pretty lucky that we have a lot of cod, groper and sea perch varieties you can catch. Can be expensive to buy, some of the prized fish are up to $80 per kg. I catch a lot more than I buy.
Lately I've been eating mullet every chance I get. I never understood why it's considered a trash fish; the filets are beautiful. Although it doesn't get much respect here, either. It's called 'bobo,' which means stupid.Mullet is a fish some people say tastes too fishy. I like them grilled, they are a bit oily to begin with so I think frying them is a mistake. We don't eat a lot of mullet because there are so may demersal species that are a lot better. I take we are talking about similar fish?
Catfish and largemouth bass. The catfish I catch are usually less than 3 pounds (1.3 Kg), I've caught as big as 17 (7.7 Kg). They are good eating when fried but I usually just allow them to go gently back in the water.
I’ve been installing new floor at the townhome in Austin most of this month so I haven’t done much fishing lately. I’m kind of a lazy worker when I employ myself so it’s only about half done. When I fish in the river I almost always catch a fish.
F8 ends the 3rd.
1-0 KC.
Runner on 3rd with zero outs did not score.
I'm not going to watch the game tonight, Instead i'll listen to the radio while fishing.
That's 2 strikes HPU has missed this AB.
No, the ball clearly hit the wall and bounced over. It's a double. By rule.
Did Tucker lose a homer on fan interference?
Pitches, pitches everywhere, and not a strike to see...
Fourth walk of the inning loads the bases again...Framber a train wreck so far...
Chuck casting from an inflatable kayak. What could possibly go wrong?
I just realized that these uniforms make them look like cricketers, particularly with the white helmets at the plate.
I have no idea if people catch fish in the surf here. I rarely see people fishing in the surf. A few people have told me that they do and have success, but I've never seen it.
I have had very minor success on other beaches around here, but I've never really paid any attention to the time and tides. The place where we are is directly in front of a large rock formation that you can walk on during low tide and gets covered up more or less at high tide. The beach to the left has fewer waves, smaller, less frequent waves, and I decided to fish there. There's quite a current sweeping from the rocks to the left, I could feel it in the rods, and I have noticed it swimming out there, and it could be that there just simply aren't any bait fish in that current so close to the rocks.
I'll try the other side of the rock formation later. I'll also walk farther down the beach; there's a small river that empties into the ocean maybe a third of a mile down the beach, and I imagine the fishing is better down there. I'll also experiment with different rigs.
I had a maiden voyage of surf fishing at the new crib the other day and it was a resounding failure. Perfect time, perfect tide, nothing.
I was short sighted and bought the cassette tape of The Unforgettable Fire when it came out. Same with The Joshua Tree.
Today I was on an 80s kick. I bought:
Armed Forces - Elvis Costello
Phantoms - The Fixx
And finally found a decent original copy of U2’s The Unforgettable Fire, which I think is their masterpiece.
I also had quite a few others that needed cleaning. I use an ultrasonic cleaner. Best thing I’ve ever found.

Watching the Astros over a breakfast cigar?
Where you been?
I just got back from an awesome vacation, so I’m a little grumpy. I’m trying to stick to the game.
I used to work on the insurance program for Woodside, who had an interest in fields in offshore Western Australia, including the North Rankin field. We got a safety report for insurers and in it was described the rationale for cancelling man overboard drills. It seems that the dummies they would throw off the platform and then pretend to rescue were ripped apart by sharks within seconds of hitting the water. That was not good news. Was was good news was that insurers didn't have to worry about workers on the platform using their safety harnesses and holding the handrails.
Wow! Any photos?
That's a reasonable assumption regarding rugby league, but I'm actually not a mungo. I'm a rugby union man and proud alumnus of Eastern Suburbs RFC in Bondi. I beleve that makes me part of the tweed blazer brigade.
First visited Australia in 1995 after graduating high school. That may have been when I first heard the term bogan. I've honestly never heard of ocker.
Pom was an easy enough term to come up with (ETA: when I played rugby in Sydney back in 2003, any time I called one of the Brits on the team a limey, none of the Aussies or Kiwis knew what the hell I was talking about). Trying to think of something for Australians left me with bogan. Highly doubt you are one, given your literacy rate and support of the Houston Astros.
I haven't seen either Bogan Hunters or Fat Pizza. However, having worked Harvest in the Hunter Valley, I'm fairly certain I can accurately guess what they're about.
Wait, I know this one. Seppo sounds like Septic because Tank rhymes with Yank, right? Only I thought it was seppie...
It was tongue firmly planted in cheek. So long as you don't calling me a seppo...
That was the joke, yo.
At least he didn't call you a grommet.
I've been hoping for far better banter between the pom and the bogan. So disappointing.
Four pages of discussion concerning a topic on which I have pronounced opinions, opinions I am unafraid to share, yet I contributed silence. I wonder what the hell was going on with me in June of 2012. Maybe we had a day-long power outage. Maybe I was in jail.
So some first impressions (over the first few hours):
1. It was easy enough to get the new phone started up. Just swapped the SIM card, and it took about 10 minutes before I could dial and receive, but looks like no problems there.
2. Had to re-download all of my apps, but it was just sitting there, redownloading. It's not like I had to walk 10 miles through the snow, uphill, to get them.
3. Docs, photos, etc transferred with a breeze.
4. Have not tried to move any music, but I may not. I still have my iPod for that.
5. Group texting is not possible through the standard, pre-installed texting app, which kind of sucks. Mrs. Hawk has always said that was an impediment to her going Android (she's a texting machine, it's all part of the the Northwest Harris County Barbie Collector's Cheap Wine and Cigarettes Club, apparently), but I downloaded Textra, made it the default text app, and all seems to be going swimmingly.
6. For the most part everything is fairly intuitive, and it is quite customizable.
7. Battery life seems to be OK, but I'll know more as the days wear on.
8. There is a large amount of shit at the top of the home screen that I've yet to figure out. I suppose I will. It does come pre-installed with a lot of google shit, but it's not too onerous to remove.
I'm sure I'll have more to bitch about later. But I'm liking getting this level of performance in a non-plastic phone for about 30% of the cost of a new iPhone.
Note to self, never read the comments. I hate Red Sox fans. Yeah, the Astros lost and yeah, Bostom is a good team. But, don't think we won't support our team and think they are great. I would expect no less from any fan. I don't know how both teams lose the WS, but I hope they do.
Auckland has a team this year. So does Geelong. I guess adding teams means the league is doing well.

I suspect they know that they got a gift and that right now would be a good time to sit down and shut up.

That AB by Stanton is pretty much why I have zero shits when the Yankmes signed him.
Kimbrel in to face Judge, Didi, and Stanton. ALCS matchup might be decided soon. As much as I’d like a game 5, I don’t see it happening.
The Yankees are carrying themselves like they really don't give a shit. Hicks' "effort" at that single (the first hit of the top of the 3rd) was especially galling.

Well, I guess it's fair in that both teams get the same lousy home starting times.
Chili is chili. If one adds an additional appellation to it, then it is chili plus or minus, something. e.g., Chili with Beans, Vegetarian Chili. White Chili. Why is this so difficult to understand?
The lack of Robert Shaw means that no other shark movie is no Jaws.
My friend in NC says this game is blacked out for him. WTF?

So, my wife walks in on me watching one of the Sharknado movies and quizzically asks, “WTF?” (which, for the some of you that have met her is funny in it own right) and I simply reply, “I’m a meteorologist”. She walked out without saying a word.
They over extended the franchise, lost me after 5.
Jaws is the only shark movie.

I'm seeing 1:05 for Friday on my MLB atbat app.
Regardless of how stupid it is, it's been said. It's also stupid because the Rockets were the one team that had shown it could handle Jordan's Bulls; it was the Sonics they couldn't beat.
Yes, any Championship stands on its own, but beating arguably the three most storied franchises in the sport for your first is the stuff o' legend, and unimpeachable.
No one with any credibility or a thimble full of sense suggests the Rockets' championships are somehow "cheap", even ignoring the fact that Jordan was in the league for the second one.
That's the fewest errors by any team in MLB since 2013. Sure helps that the pitching staff only allowed 2-3 balls in play per game.
Yeah, he stole that ball. Looks like a wanker to me.

Justin Verlander leads all AL pitchers in WHIP (0.91), WAR (6.4) and strikeouts (280), is tied for first in quality starts (25), second in innings (208) and third in ERA (2.60) and in opponent batting average (.201).
Brian McTaggart @brianmctaggart 1h ago
Verlander will pitch a full game, probably not going past 100 pitches, though. He's in the Cy Young race and the Astros are going to give him a chance to pad his numbers.
College football is corrupt, golf is boring.

Kemp pops up the bunt for out #1 but Marisnick and Tucker follow with walks. 1 out with LSU guy at the plate.
Infield base hit for Bregman loads bases (and keeps his road on-base streak alive).
Marwin singles to left, Marisnick scores to give the club first lead of the night at 2-1. Tucker had a better read on the ball than Gary Pettis (or knew of DJ Stewart's less than stellar athleticism) and could have also scored.

Well that job is done, and now I wish it wasn't.
Some bad luck that inning. Haniger with kind of a shiftfuck single, Segura with a seeing eye bouncer over the 3B bag, Cano's looping liner that Reddick got an arm on...the only ball struck well was the liner off of Keuchel.
Zero confidence we'll get an overturn. No matter what the actual play was.
I thought Tyler was going to get thrown out at 2nd. Whew! Go Tyler!
Good job, Hector! Strike 4!
A's win.
Damn. They had a guy on 2nd with 2 outs, I was hoping for a miracle.
He knew what he was doing.
Then it's mental. Which is worse.
I accept that he's not 100%. But if he's 30%, he's not helping.
Then he should be on the DL, not hitting 4th or 5th in the lineup. It doesn't make him a bad person but results matter, and Correa simply has not delivered since his return. It's not helping the team win to keep running him out there if he's physically unable to contribute at an acceptable level.

Why is that funny? Sometimes you have to remind the bat of things.

Man, James is easy gas.
Jake just bailed Charlie out, but Charlie has got to stop doing this. He has too many starts where he looks dominant for three to four innings, then he implodes.
No, sir. The only hard liquor I can remember drinking in Australia ever was at a bar near the central market in Adelaide that had some special gin that allegedly was made according to some old seafarer's recipe and it was supposed to be especially strong. It was a house specialty apparently and so I ordered it. I don't remember its being any different from any other gin, really.
I assume Australian rum production is largely if not exclusively in Queensland.
I don't always drink rum, but when I do, I drink Ron Abuelo.
It's not the high toned stuff you guys drink. It'll put some fuzz on your chewing gum.
Pretty sure Sweet Caroline is in Bm.
I'm a little confused: what did he just do with the bat?
SWING THE FUCKING BAT!!
What the fuck is wrong with these guys?
I wonder what it's like to have a shortstop that swings the bat.
Someone should tell the Red Sox that they’re not suppposed to swing at meatballs down the middle of the plate.
No. They have to schedule their main crew weeks in advance.
No kidding.
End your suffering people.
Well, except for the 25 or so pitches.
Anger.
Much anger.
Yeah, but do you have to shit outside? You are WAY the fuck out there in WA...
Holy shit. You all are now a full half inning ahead of me. Fuck this shit... I can’t believe I pay for this.
Listening to that Reddick play nearly gave me a heart attack.
Looked safe live.

Ok who knows what the milk the cow signal is that Astros do after hits?
Oh good.
There hasn't been enough stupid in my day.
Handshakes/High 5s to GZ.
We are Groot.
That was horrendous.
Double plays are not.
He hit that one a little didn't he?
Colin McHugh continues to be awesome out of the pen.
Freaking rangers.
Peacock!!! I like the excitement from Maldonado, too.
Set it for April 2019.
Jeebus Correa...you’re allowed to use that stick you brung to the plate with you.
Squid ink ice cream is a not unpopular item in Japan. And here's the Dallas Observer's recipe for peach and calamari ice cream.
I don't know. He looks to me like somebody who's holding back on his swing because he's afraid, consciously or subconsciously, to let it go.
I'm never happy after a loss but this one has me pissed. And I mainly blame Fisher.
This is it. Two runs a game with this lineup is about all you can ask for.
Tyler White is a slow human. He's lucky that we don't routinely have to escape predators anymore.
The story is that Hudek was hammered tonight. NTTAWWTRight, now I get it.
I think that I shall never see
A sight as lovely as 5-4-3
Bregman's hair condition spread overnight.
Marwin goes deep to lead off the 2nd!
ding dong
"why yes, I AM interested in insurance".
He's kinda always had that look about him, but it's not as glaring when he's hitting .300
Perfect way to end it.
Vomit.
Pressly making his Astros debut.
Somebody who isn't completely sickened by our offense should come up with a nickname for him.
We're gonna waste that leadoff double, aren't we?
Over/under on him throwing at someone?A couple of walks and then a couple of balks and he gives up a run.
He also knocked a foul ball off his shin last night that looked pretty painful.
I know there's a lot to dislike about the rangers, but Andrus has always rubbed me the wrong way.
I doubt he can pass up a mirror.
What was the report on Altuve?
I thought I was being sufficiently obsequious. Apparently not.
Wow. They fucked up the replay on the stolen base by Tucker. Call should have been confirmed, let alone upheld. But overturned? Are they smoking crack in NY?
It boggles my mind that fans of any team anywhere actually like that guy.
3 ABs after the double, not a threatening swing among them.
Ouch. I thought he took that off the schnozz at first.
He also shows currently as "suspended" on the Hooks' roster and some in the bus rider section are concerned about the implications.
Damn, that game is 19-6 Rays....

Harris, do NOT let his runs score.
I was thinking Joe Dirt
Bregman swung the bat at the ball. An angel from heaven came down with a heavenly choir sing “Hosanna! Alleluia!” The catcher Lucroy crossed himself but noticed that the ball through divine providence was dribbling down the first base line He reached for the ball but a raven landed on it. “Nevermore!” quoth the raven. Lucroy, startled, nonetheless picked up the ball to tag out Bregman, but the brilliant light emitted by Bregman startled him and Lucroy bobbled the ball. Bregman, hoisted by the heavenly chorus, was carried down the line toward first. Lucroy tried to make the play to first but the Bregman force field diverted the ball towards the Romulun cruiser. Safe. Astros win.
You really should have seen it.
It’s good to announce your presence with authority.
Thanks. Game Cast should have mentioned that.
"Can't believe he made contact that many times in a row."
Rays finally put in their pocket...what a crazy game.
And Straily walks...NOW the tying run to the plate in the form of ex-Astros Cameron Maybin...
Alvarado is tomorrow's starter...trying to avoid using him.
And now catcher, Jesus Sucre in to try to close it out for the Rays...
Rays plate five runs in the top of the 16th, including an RBI by the pitcher, Vidal Nuno...who immediately pulled his hamstring running to 1B, and had to leave the game.
I was reminded of the top of the 9th in Game 7 last November, when CFM strode to the dish...only thing I was thinking was "whatever you do, don't swing the fucking bat!"
Marlins waste a leadoff double in the 15th...on to 16...
I hate the Dutch.
Is there a lower energy place in MLB than Tropicana?
Fucking Keirmaier.
Prick or prickly, take your pick. But a great sci-fi author (one of my favorites) and some of his quotes are more relevant than ever:
"The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity."
"Everybody has opinions: I have them, you have them. And we are all told from the moment we open our eyes, that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Well, that’s horsepuckey, of course. We are not entitled to our opinions; we are entitled to our informed opinions. Without research, without background, without understanding, it’s nothing. It’s just bibble-babble. It’s like a fart in a wind tunnel, folks."
Josh was safe by a full half step.
Bus rides can be fun. Y'all should try it.
Nice GZ today. Wild game.
I have no idea why the umps didn't get that right off the bat. Most balks are a little weird, but that one was about as clear as they get.
Devo gets it done.
Meanwhile ranger fan in front of me pulled up the Odor/Bautista fight and played it for his 4 year old son.
I’d like just like to say that I like made like an awesome pork tenderloin like on the grill with like a fig and balsamic glaze. It was like awesome and stuff.
He should be.
ETA: wish Gallo was in CF tonight.
Charlie can't find the plate with a map and a lantern.
I assume that Verlander thought he was going to get the first pitch for free, just to get things going.
By far the worst thing about that homer was seeing that little prick Odor bouncing around afterward.
Quality defense all around.
