Beer and Queso / Re: Guns
« on: February 17, 2018, 02:49:38 pm »
WTF?

Why does requiring a responsible gun owner to register his/her guns smack to totalitarianism?  That is the sort of purely hyperbolic nonsense that muddies the debate and makes it an all-or-nothing test.

If the gun lobby is going to put this carnage all on the backs of the mentally ill, then the logical progression is that we have to know who has what guns so that, when someone goes off the reservation, we know where to go and what to collect from them.  Responsible gun owners should not have the merest peep of an issue with this because they're...you know...responsible.  If you advocate against sensible gun regulations, then you are - by definition - not being responsible.

What, praytell, is sensible? I could agree to register the assault rifles, but not other guns. I don't want, and hope that you don't either, to create a situation down the road where a regime has the ability to go house to house to collect guns. The Democrat Party leaders have made it clear that this is their ultimate aim, which is why it won't happen. The American people won't stand for it.

Here's my proposal: the owner of record for a firearm is culpable of something similar to manslaughter  if a crime is committed with that firearm (maybe there's a range of charges from contributory negligence to manslaughter, depending upon the severity of the related crime, or maybe we use the mandatory minimum sentencing that Republicans love so much). Yes, that means there's a firearm ownership database somewhere; deal with it. If you own a weapon and it's stolen, you get 30 days to report it to the police. If somebody uses that gun more than 30 days later and you haven't reported it, you're on the hook. If you transfer ownership to somebody else (e.g., grandfather gives his squirrel rifle to his grandson), you get 30 days to update the ownership records, If that other person commits a crime with that transferred weapon and you haven't updated the ownership records, you're on the hook. This would directly address straw purchases and gun show loopholes.

The immediate effect probably wouldn't be great because of the volume of guns already out in the wild that won't be registered to anybody. That's life (and death, unfortunately). But over time many of those guns are going to fall out of circulation, and 20 years from now we would be in a much better situation.

The big changes won't come until our representatives fear the electorate more than they fear the NRA.

The gun registry idea will never happen. Nor should it because it smacks of totalitarian regimes.

I wouldn't go that far, but I thought he was the perfect manager for the Yankees - he's their kind of asshole.

He put together a starting rotation over the last two or three seasons from a lot of question marks. I think that Bochy is the best in the game. Hinch is climbing quickly.

Fuck the Yankees.

I'm predicting that they will very much miss Girardi.  One assumption behind the Yankee optimism is that Boone will be equal or better than Girardi.  We'll see.

I agree with you on both scores. Girardi was one of the top five skippers in the game.

Darvish doesn't exactly frighten me anymore, but all the same, I'm glad he's in the other league now. I wonder where Arrieta is going to wind up.

It's conceivable that Arrieta could sign a short contract with the Cubs, who, if Arrieta signs with another club, have to replace Arrieta and Lackey.

Can someone enlighten me? I'm thinking this is a drug reference or something.

It is indeed a drug reference. The number 420 has a special meaning to all potheads. 420 means it is time to burn! I used to smoke at 4:20, both a.m. and p.m. There are a number of rumors about how the phrase came in being, but they all seem to point back to California.

Yeah yeah, I read that and more.  I know all about drug addiction, I have an extensive history dealing first hand with addicts. I have seen many people suffer from addictions. Some of them were/are also dumbasses. They are not mutually exclusive behaviors. I make no apologies for calling him one. Just like I'll call Josh Hamilton a dumbass without any reservations. And it doesn't mean I am not sympathetic to someone being an addict or a dumbass, or both. If not sugar coating a situation makes me a jerk, then so be it.

For the record, as a recovering drug addict, I was not offended in the least by what you wrote. In fact, I don't favor sugar coating addiction at all, because people die from addiction behaviors that cross the line. In fact, people who sugar coat and tippy-toe around addiction often are enablers. Unfortunately, addiction is a phenomenon about which we actually know very little.

I'm reading a new and controversial book entitled Unbroken Brain by Maia Szalavitz, a recovering addict. She cites extensive research and really debunks the whole 12 step mode of recovery that almost every rehab facility uses. It's quite persuasive and suggests that addiction may not be a disease at all. I know this personally: addiction is a series of poor choices, for which one must be held responsible and accountable.

Musgrove is a proven MLB pitcher who still has a lot of upside. Feliz is very young, has an excellent arm and almost unlimited upside. Moran looked like a world beater last year until he got hurt. It was especially notable because the year before he was horrible in the majors. The light obviously went on at some point in between. It would not surprise me at all to see him rake for the next six or eight years. I have NFI who the fourth guy is.

That's a pretty good haul for a guy who hasn't been very good the last two years.

I'm going to quibble with your opinion that Musgrove is a "proven MLB pitcher" at 11-12 4.52 with 171 innings pitched. What, pray tell, do you make of Feliz that he's got an unlimited upside? Your admission that you have NFI who the fourth guy is was against interest. Finally, Cole has a tremendous arm who will benefit from being in Houston.

Exactly right on trading with NYY, and Musgrove was a key contributer in the pen down the stretch and in the postseason. Feliz was good for much of the last three seasons. This is just more of the bullshit Yankees hype we are forced to read and to listen to from the media.

The Astros  had a formula.  They followed it, they won.  Other teams trading for and loading up on big names can not hurt,  I am not that naive or stupid (contrary to popular belief), but if they dont have what made the Astros work like a well oiled machine wiill it work.  Will the players all do as asked, not compare playing time,  not believe there is no I  or me in team.   Its just a thought and for tho of you who are truly surprised, I do have those occasionaly.

Tempest in a teapot.  Anyone that has been a part of any team sport for any length of time (or any workplace for that matter) has been around boorish behavior.  The story is not that it happened, it's that the team dynamic was unaffected and they all saw it as and treated it as a non-consequential blip.

For the past 34 years (since 1983) the Astros have had just 7 regular starters at second base: Doran, Candaele, Biggio, Kent, Matsui, Keppinger, and Altuve.

Think of how good Dickie Thon might have been.

Biggio's best of his "ridiculous" seasons would be an average one for Altuve.  Biggio got on base a little more often and stole more bases, but Altuve hits with more power and drives in more runs.  Most of the difference is in where they hit in the order and ballparks.  Overall offensive production, Biggio's best is the expectation for Altuve.  Altuve is the far superior defensive player.  I'm baffled as to how anyone can say Biggio was the better player.

Damn, Coach. That was a lot to endure at one time. For obvious personal reasons, I'm elated for Elizabeth, who, like many, are proof positive about the merits of a second chance. Mark's Mark, and we love him.

Having gone through, albeit at different times, loss of practice (which was my fault) and unexpected divorce with my first wife. I tried therapy to mixed results. Obviously, for many years, I self-medicated until I almost destroyed my life.

But what finally helped me was the self-revelation, which came to me in the suicide cage of a jail, that each loss also presented another opportunity, so that I changed my focus from the loss to the opportunity. I don't know why it took so long and so much acrimony for that thought to come out of my head. But I'm grateful that it did. I made great strides and virtually eradicated my anger problem.

I have nothing butt the utmost respect for you, and I wish you all the best. Go World Series Champion Houston Astros!

Also there was a sidebar to the WS coverage about "tanking".  The authors' point....the Astros don't deserve any kudos for their success because they took the tanking route. This was after the writer pointed out that other teams are adopting the tanking approach.

Few time poster, long time lurker...

I've been watching as many of you have commented, joked, and sparred over this franchise since I discovered the old AstrosConnection back in 1999.  I've enjoyed your joyous exclamations when this team has done great things.

Things like clinching on the last game of 99, the six-pitcher no-hitter in NYC, the Chris Burke HR, the NLCS win in 05, the rise of the baby 'Stros in 15, and this year's crazy World Series run.

I've also experienced your pain when things haven't gone so well, such as Walt-f**&%$#-Weiss,  Carlos Hernandez tearing his rotator cuff, Anaheim Jimmy in the 04 NLCS Game 6,  the sweep in the 05 WS, the many losses from 2008-14, and the Correa error, and getting Rangered last year.

When other folks gave up on this team in the Process years, it was nice to turn to this board and see some excellent discussion about the bright future.  Now that the Astros are on the cusp of greatness, I wanted you all to know that it's been more fun because of what you all bring to the discussion.

Thanks to you all. I hope to be celebrating with you soon!

Thank you for sharing our passion. Never ever give up.

To me Altuve's Mad Dash was more exciting because (1) the hits came off one of the best closers in the game who was throwing 100 mph (2) you had 10 second of the play developing to build excitement to (3) realizing that Altuve wasn't slowing down at third and (4) the throw was going to beat him but (4) HOLY SHIT WE WON THE GAME!

Kent's home run was awesome but as soon as he swung it was over.  That ten seconds of excitement and drama as Altuve wheeled around the bases was simply unbelievable.

I agree. As much as I enjoyed Kent's dinger, it was over when he hit the ball. The range of emotions on Altuve's dash ranged from the "are you fucking crazy" that I exclaimed when I saw him rounding 3B without even looking to "o my fucking God Astros win!!!" A good friend of mine and very knowledgable fan (and former college baseball coach) told me yesterday that, pound for pound, Jose Altuve is the greatest player he's ever seen.

Fuck everything about LA. Fuck Lasorda. I still hate those bastards. I have a picture with Tommy Lasorda and me in my office that comes with a funny story that you'd never suspect if you looked at that picture. Suffice it to say that we were in each other's faces about Dodgers-Astros. I called him a fucking asshole. He called me a low rent Astros fan, said I was stupid to root for the Astros and called me a motherfucker at least three times. He started it. It was at a political fundraiser for a mutual friend prior to a Dodgers-Athletics exhibition game in the Superdome.

It might just be me, but I saw clear signs of maturation by LMJ during his Boston appearance. Last night, he was lights out. He's dripping wet with talent, and I think that he's starting to catch up on his makeup. I'm glad that he's an Astro for now, but I wouldn't be heartbroken if we traded him for a stellar LF in the offseason.

How is this any different than what Mr. Appropriate shared with us? Why the need to vilify someone who is speaking with their honest core about events that apparently had a big impact on a lot of people?

Carry on, Dark Star. Here's hoping that passion returns.

It’s quite different actually. I believe Mr. Appropriate. I’ve read about Dark Star’s alleged loss now since 2012. If he’s really lost his fandom, why continue to come back to tell us about it? I’m a writer. I’ve never written about a subject for which I had no passion. Dark Star is a fine writer. I doubt seriously that he could continue to write at that level if he truly had no passion. I also hope that he finds that passion that is still inside him.

578
What a game; what a GZ!!! Geaux Astros!

Man, I remember when he couldn't get his slop over and had to come in on hitters and they'd just slay him. I never thought he'd be anything. I was wrong, so wrong.

I was too. I thought that he was just another soft-tossing lefty.

Nice start,  Dallas.

I may get skewered here,  but I enjoy Smoltz as a color analyst especially when he touches on a pitcher's approach.

So do I. I also enjoy A.J. Pierzinski’s take because he talks a lot of inside baseball stuff and calls out players when that is required.

I may be crazy (lots of people think so), but I’m calling bullshit on Dark Star’s alleged lost love for the Astros.  You don’t write for a fan site if you no longer give a shit. My hypothesis is that he still cares deeply. I’m not saying that this is for attention, but I assert that Dark Star likes the attention and the urging of the OWA faithful to return.

I really don’t give two shits if Dark Star lost his fandom for our Astros. To me, the loss involved a choice. This wasn’t an involuntary loss; it involved a decision. Anyone who can’t get behind this magical team after having followed the club since 1966 has no soul. You’re welcome to return when you choose to be a fan again, but until then, fuck off and WFW. Cry me a God damn river. You and your lost fandom. Boo fucking hoo.

I’m tired of reading your periodic sob story. Crawl back into your hole, douche bag.

Most umpires (not you, Joe West) are reluctant to toss a player in a playoff game. Farrell did a good job taking one for the team.

About 30 years, I was drinking with an NL umpiring crew in St. Louis, and we discussed this very point. And Coach is correct. This crew, to a man, said that they wouldn’t run a player in the playoffs unless the player went batshit crazy (that was the term they used) and gave them no choice but to keep control of the game, like Joaquin Andujar back in the 1985 World Series. Never EVER try to out drink a big league umpire; they have hollow legs.

The Astros were in an early-season NBC Game of the Week in 1970, and while interviewing Bouton before the game Tony Kubek basically accused him of making up most of the book.  Bouton just shrugged and said "every word is true".

He followed up Ball Four with an attempt to chronicle the '70 season called "I'm Glad You Didn't Take It Personally".  It was a pretty awful book, but it did have its moments, such as Doug Rader taking a dump on Jesus Alou's birthday cake.

I have that one too. I went and met Bouton about 30 years ago, right after his 1979 comeback with the Braves. He was clear that he had much more fun riding the bus in AA chasing the dream with the kids than when the Braves called him up, which is why he didn’t come back in 1980. He wanted to prove to himself that he could..

Let's not get carried away.  Getting up early is always preferable, and the NY bullpen is stout, but the Astros have gotten to them before, and if necessary, I like their chances of doing it again.

I’m not getting carried away. We all knew about Betances, Chapman and Robertson, but this Kahnle is pretty nasty too. I’m merely saying that it might be more difficult to come from behind. However, we’re a great fastball hitting team. Tanaka can be nasty, as he was against the Tribe. However, he was pretty ordinary most of the season. If you follow the simple rule that if the ball is at the knees, let it go, we should be alright..

« on: October 13, 2017, 06:23:34 am »
The Indians lost to a good team.  Sometimes it's just that simple: you lose.  There doesn't have to be an underlying, psychological explanation.

The way the Yankees won three in a row after the way they lost G2 is truly impressive.

Having become a Tribe fan, on the orders of Mrs. Happy, with which I dutifully complied (I finally learned after two failed marriages-happy wife = happy life), I think that the Tribe may have gotten overconfident after the dramatic come-from-behind win in Game Two. Without Encarnacion, the Tribe's batting order becomes ordinary with some holes. It also didn't help much that Ramirez has been going up there to hit a five run homer every AB lately.

I had a text battle with a work colleague who is a Tribe nut. When I told him that Trevor Bauer had better stuff than  Cory Kluber, he became apoplectic and accused me of blasphemy. I tried to explain that Bauer has two plus-plus pitches and he's close on a third pitch. More velocity. More movement. I told him that Kluber was more consistent and was still a better pitcher than Bauer, whose problem lies between his ears, although he's come a long way this season.

In any event, I want to best the best, and that's the Yankees. So fuck them. and FTC.

A league-wide problem with respect for country. The real scoundrels here are the owners, who chose to appease a few miscreants rather than stand up for what is right. Talk Zone / Re: McCullers

The team is in a pennant drive. McCullers has a strong start off a very long DL stay for a sore back. Before his next start he says "My arm is tired" so the scratch him. Hinch asks him is he is ready for the next start, and he says "I feel ok." Hinch responding saying ok is not enough for these games implies (I think) exasperation with his failure to pitch at a critical time when the team needs him. I bet there are similar feelings in the clubhouse.

McCullers was the #2 before Verlander and was #3 after. The team needs him to be the strong pitcher he was in the first half. Continuing to say my arm is tired during these critically days screams "I am not mentally tough. Please baby me and my arm."  It does to me anyway.

+1 I want a guy who says "I want the fucking ball."

I posted this in the GZ, but let's start the discussion here. I am out of patience with him, and I cannot imagine Hinch and Luhnow are far behind. Hinch said "He says he is ok, but ok is not enough to pitch in a game." I would trade him to someone who loves his potential, like VV, if we get dependable non-prima dona pitching back. Britton? A solid starter? I hope they leave him off the first playoff roster as a wakeup call.

I agree. When we drafted him, I was concerned that he'd be like his dad, who was great WHEN he was on the field. Let's sell high and move on.

Ran their streak to 19 games tonight.  The all time major league record is 21.

During this streak, they've thrown 6 shut outs, and another 8 games where they've given up 2 runs or less.  That's getting it done on the bump.

What is up with  the usually reliable Luke Gregerson? Is he playing hurt? He's allowed a Fiers-like 11 home runs in 55 1/3 innings.  I've not seen the same bite in his slide piece in most of his appearances this season. He doesn't have big velocity  in his heater, and I think that the hitters are sitting back and waiting for a cement mixer, and I've seen plenty of those.

More troubling though is that I've seen lots of mistake pitches that hitters simply have missed. Gregerson has allowed earned runs in slightly over 20% of his appearances, which seems like a lot for a backend bully guy. His groundball pct. is good at 49.7%, but that's negated by all of the home runs. At 33, is he a descending player?

In my opinion, he's too unreliable right now to use in high leverage situations.

I'll hang up and listen.

That evening I was unhappy I had things to do and couldn't watch the second half.
When I woke up and read the news, I was very pleased I didn't.

I've seen predictions for the season ranging from 3-8 to 10-2. All of the later started off with a 5-0 run, and that's not happening now.  I've decided if we can beat Nichols State, ULaLa, and New Mexico, I'll call it good.  Sumlin will be looking for work, but I'm not going to let them damage my calm.  When I was A&M we tended to be surprised when we won a big game, and the season was a lot more fun. Now the expectations are so unrealistically high, everyone is bummed all the time.  I think everyone in the SEC West but us is in the top 25, as is one of our two SEC East game.

I hear that our old buddy John Chavis may be out by the end of the week.

Been saying this for years. Strict pitch counts hurt arms, not help them.

This indeed is the gospel truth. In my opinion, pitch counts are the concession that travel ball coaches make to make a pitcher throw all year, which simply wears their young arms out early and which is, in my opinion, highly inadvisable. Then they never get to build up any endurance.

I understand that.  Couldn't the Astros have re-signed him to a minor league deal, too?   I don't recall the team having made him such an offer.  I just looked at Martinez' transactions list, and he was "released" by the Astros, then signed by DET 2 days later.  There may be a rule that prevents gaming the system by re-signing a player immediately following an unconditional release... I don't know for sure.

In any event, BG is correct:  This team would look different if JD had been retained, and things certainly seem to have worked out just fine.

And if my uncle had tits, he'd be my aunt. The Astros released him because AAA was already clogged with outfielders back then. I'm tickled for Martinez.

Well, boys, I have to attend to important matters tonight so autodraft it is. That should result in a three or four game upward swing for me this year. Or I guess I could end up with Andrew Luck, Ezekiel Elliott and Will Fuller. Hell, I might still get that upward swing.

I'll miss your obligatory snarky comment about one or more of my picks.

Growing up rooting for the Colt .45s, I have had to rely on the broadcasts of opponents for several decades to keep up with them.  It is much easier, now via the internet.  It became a habit.

You would expect the Astros announcers to love the team.  That's what they are paid to do.

It is good to hear what others say about the Astros!  This year especially, thanks to mlb.tv,  it has been fun to watch non-Astros broadcasters admire our team and share nuances about the game we love:

  • The Tampa Bay announcers loved Altuve - who doesn't! - even catching him glance @ 3rd just before the pitch is delivered...
  • The Mets broadcasters raved about the Astros, :
    1. Naming Gary Pettis the MVP of game,2 of the double header for challenging the defense, sending runners home from 2nd base;
    2. Seeing Altuve respond to a HBP in the 7th by stealing 2nd, taking 3rd on a grounder to 3rd, and walking home on Reddick's sac fly -  "that's the way the game should be played! ...  Not waiting for a HR on station-to-station advances!"
    3. "The Astros have so many weapons - not just power - they use speed, (other reasons) to score more runs than anyone else."

I doubt that I am the only one that does this.  Would love to heat what others have learned from "the opposition".

Thanks,
Snuffy

I think that most of the good color analysts, who tend to be former players, will point out really fine and amazing plays made by the opposition and give them the credit they deserve. It's good to hear that about the steM announcers.

The Astros did not sell anyone for anything. They traded three prospects for Verlander, and the Tigers paid $16 million of the money owed over the life of the contract. They worked on this deal for a month, which a waiver claim would not have allowed.

Of course, this is correct. It should be clear that this deal benefits both teams.

I think that the Verlander trade was a fair deal - both teams got good value in needed areas.

I think that you're right. The Tigers' farm system is bereft of prospects. If they got three, that means that they have three prospects. I've seen the shit that comes through Toledo for four years now. They have almost no big league ready talent.

I'm not convinced that he can be counted on at all. Not this season, maybe never. He's given us no reason to believe he can stay healthy.

I agree. I was concerned that he'd end up with the same problem that his dad had in the big leagues, and that was staying on the field.

Those of you who understand pitching mechanics better than I do: does McCullers flying open on his delivery seem like bad habits, or compensating for the injury?

I believe that his flying open flaw is unrelated to his injury. Injuries often force a change in mechanics to alleviate or at least minimize the discomfort. They probably put him back there before he was truly healed.

Talk Zone / Re: Luhnow on the radio
« on: August 12, 2017, 04:16:59 pm »
First post in the forum gang. I've been a lurker for a while but thought I would finally jump on in.
I've been a huge fan of Luhnow's and I think he is a great GM. I was disappointed as most on here when we did nothing at July 31st. Jeff has been so good that I find it really hard to believe he could screw things up this badly. I heard him say many times going as far back as spring training, that while they didn't want to overpay for a player at that time, they would do what was necessary to get them where they wanted to go. I've been trying to reconcile that statement  with what happened at the deadline. Here is the only thing that makes sense to me.

The brass had already decided that Verlander was the only starting pitcher they want. He's a power arm with plenty of postseason experience which they want and he is controllable. The problem with trading for him at the deadline however is that you don't know for sure if you have a real shot at the title because health wise your staff is a mess. No sense in giving up top talent if you are not sure about your top three pitchers. Verlander can't win it by himself. A gamble is made that Verlander, because of his massive contract, will clear waivers and can be had in August if at least two of Keuchel, McHugh and McCullers are pitching well in mid to late August. The decision is made to focus on relievers at the deadline. Teams are told that "these six or seven guys are unavailable" because the brass knows some of them will be needed to swing the Verlander deal. As a result, we were unable to land a big reliever. The focus now is getting at least two of our big three pitching well before end of the month. I'm hoping that if we rebound Verlander will be ours at months end.

This is the only thing that makes any sense to me.

Like I said, I was just throwing it out there.

You guys bring up a couple of obvious examples of bad luck.  I'm saying the ravaging of the pitching staff is almost as historic as the offensive production.  I guess they're just cursed.

Sometimes, that happens. This isn't the first time for such a curse, e.g., the J.R. Richard stroke out of nowhere. And it won't be the last time either.

Average fan is also not aware that the A's asking price for Grey from the Astros was likely much higher than the Yankees because they would have to face Grey more in the division if he were an Astro.  Basically the price for Grey and Darvish was higher because of being in the same division. That limits the pool for starting pitching.

Judging by what's been written here by many TZ denizens, we've got lots of below average fans in our numbers.

There is no strength and conditioning program that is going to prevent pinched nerves, torn thumb ligaments, or quad pulls caused by ricocheting line drives.

I have zero legs to stand on at this site. But I simply dislike piling on players like Sipp. He came out of nowhere and helped the fuck out of this team in a down season and in the playoffs. There's a human element that comments like these ignores and I don't like reading it. It's cheap and unnecessary. The context of Sipps career is worth more than a few jokes before his dream possibly comes to an end. He's never shown a lack of effort or a lack of desire. If a stint on the dl and a "rehab start" are all the Astros have left to offer him, I hope he rises the fuck up again. If he doesn't, thank you Mr. Sipp.

I didn't realize that we had a public defender in our midst.

Its difficult to understand the machinations of the trade market when we know so little of the negotiations and games which the general managers play.  We only hear the public pronouncements so really know next to nothing about why decisions are truly made.  Luhnow has built this team from nothing, so why second guess him?  It would have been nice to have an additional reliever, but my personal guess is when one has a deep system, the price goes up proportionally.

Exactly.

681
The pitching is fine in the regular season, the playoffs is where they will fail.

BS. How do you know that?

Ok, should maybe isn't the right word, could have been made would be better.

The Yankees gave up very little if you ask me and I'm disappointed that a deal could not have been reached.

I trust luhnow and I have no doubt he tried to make something happen. But, this is a results based business. Every player tries to hit .300, some hit .200 and get cut. It's not what you try to do, it's what you do that matters.

This team was not made better today and that's on luhnow.

What result interests you? Winning the trading deadline? If so, that's pathetic. I want to win the WS. That's the result I want.

Seriously, though, In Luhnow I Trust.  Luhnow is going to do the best thing for this team.  I think Crane wants to win, regardless of what some others may say.  I would like to see Gray become an Astro because he seems to be having a good season, but I'm expecting Verlander and Wilson to become Astros.  But, someone I don't want to leave the Astros is going to have to leave the Astros.  I wish him all the success in the world, except against the Astros.

I know pitcher A is Verlander, but in his 3 starts after the all-star break he's: 3.26ERA, 19.1IP, 14H, 7ER, 3HR, 6BB, 22K, .200BA, 1.03WHIP.

This season I'd rather have the guy with the track record and still having quality stuff than Fiers.

And he's got significant playoff experience.

Last 30 days:

Pitcher A: 6 starts 36 1/3 IP 38 H, 18 ER, 5 HR, 14 BB, 34 K, 4.46 ERA, 1.43 WHIP
Pitcher B: 5 starts  29 2/3 IP, 21 H, 10 ER, 3 HR, 4 BB, 40 K, 3.03 ERA, 1.04 WHIP

Which one do you want?

Given that Verlander is 5-7 4.50 for the season, I assume that he's pitcher A?

Verlander had a Cy Young caliber year last season, and yet you said "Gray and Verlander were good as recently as 2015."  Hence my comment.

I saw damn near every one of Verlander's starts last season. He started out horribly, but he finished the season with excellent numbers. His velocity, and this includes this year, still hops up to 97-98 when he needs it. I'd take Verlander.

The same. That makes the arm lag behind, and the result is wild high and inside (to RH hitter). If he rushes and tries to catch up his arm to his body, the result is yanking the pitch low and away. He was wild on both sides of the plate. His visible frustration and demeanor on the mound do not help either.

This is exactly what I saw. I watch a fair amount of Cleveland Indians games, and they've got a pitcher, Trevor Bauer, who's got two plus-plus pitches and a ten cent brain. He gets so flustered out there by anything and implodes, often in the first inning. McCullers, Jr. reminds me of Trevor Bauer in that respect.

Luhnow et al. have a demonstrated record of success in the draft, which ensures a steady pipeline of players. This indeed is a win now year. I'd be willing to mortgage the farm with the expectation that good talent continues to bubble up. If it takes Tucker, so be it. Fisher too. Throw in Martes and Bregman.

It probably doesn't change the consensus, but those players listed were from both the Kazmir and the Gomez/Fiers trades.  And the Astros might very well have missed out on valuable post-season experience without those trades.

LHP, closer, pretty good stats, teams needing bullpen help are following him.

Derek Fisher has a bright future, but the point is to win now.

I agree. Wilson's a proven vet who would definitely improve the bully and provide Hinch with another portside arm. In my opinion, the club needs another starter and a bully arm to go deep into the playoffs, so this acquisition would fill one of those needs. We're close, so the club has to try to win now. If it costs us Fisher, so be it.

Talk Zone / Re: Altuve and strikeouts

I agree re: the bullpen especially.  I think it was brilliant the other night in Arlington, letting Giles pitch the 9th even with a 7-run lead.  He hadn't pitched in like four days, so let him knock some rust off without any pressure.  He threw the cookie to Beltre, but it was a 7-run lead and got a chance to say "ok, got it...not gonna throw him *that* pitch again."  The next night Giles was needed in a much closer situation, and didn't let Beltre beat him.  Little things and planning ahead is what is giving Hinch the advantage right now.

I will echo both of you. I also think that Hinch's masterful use of matchups and in-game moves has set him apart this year.

Incredible. I am terrified of doing anything which suggests boasting. I want the BBGs to enjoy this too.

It's been a great run. But just remember that five of our losses come against the team that we'll most likely face in the AL Championship.

My earliest baseball memory has to be staying awake after I'd been put to bed listening to New York Yankees baseball games through the attic fan. My dad listened every night, and I'd get to hear it in my room courtesy of the attic fan. That had to have been 1966-67. The first team I followed was the 1969 Astros, because I had received a portable transistor radio that was tuned into Gene Elston and Loell Passe. I've been hooked ever since.

ETA : I just gone on here, and I am getting back off. I do not understand the fucking sarcasm when a guy pitched his ass off against a first place team.

Coach is right. Fiers turned in six quality innings on the road against a good team and put us in line for the W. I've been disappointed in how he's pitched this season, but not tonight. He was good, and not lucky good-really good.

Good teams make good plays.  The Yankees are a good team full of dangerous hitters; they managed to take one game (the game we all probably assumed would be a loss going in), built a late rally mostly against a guy who just came up from AAA in another game, and had another late rally bested by defense.  The Astros are also a good team and took three out of four against one of the best teams in baseball this season, including torching one of the Yankees' best pitchers this season.

Not trying to explain away Sunday's bullpen shenanigans, but I'm not overly worried.

Giles, Gregerson and Sipp are not having good years so far.  Every time I see them pitch, I am on pins and needles and, when they occasionally do well, I attribute it more to luck than anything else. This team is doing so very well despite them. That's all.

Giles got a vulture win last night, which probably pissed off Keuchel. Giles is too unreliable to bring in with traffic.

Why would someone rather get actually HIT, then have someone throw the ball behind their back?  I can understand if the pitch was above the shoulders.

Deer lowered. It's obvious. Humans share a propensity to step backwards from harm. The hitter is confined to the batter's box. When the ball is delivered behind him, the natural instinct is to step backwards, and possibly into a beaning.

Correa is hitting a whopping .147 with runners on base.  A slightly less impressive .095 when said runners are in scoring position.  When aforementioned runners are in scoring position with two out, he's hitting .000...that's POINT ZERO, ZERO, ZERO.  I'm shocked it that it's even possible to be worse.

We're in first place in part because the other clubs in the division got off to poor starts. 21 games isn't a bad sample size, and this lineup would only be temporary until the other guys get going. Moving them down in the order takes some of the pressure off of them.

Im with HH on this too, especially considering that weird B8.   I was really surprised to see him back out there for the 9th.

HH made some valid points as usual. However, I still think that Luhnow did the right thing by allowing Keuchel to stay in the game. Giles has been great in save situations, but in non-save situations, not so much.  Obviously, last night was a save situation, but you never know what's going to happen when you run a new pitcher out there in a clean inning, even one as good as Giles. We knew what Keuchel was last night, while Giles was an unknown.

820
I hear you, and normally I agree.  But after cruising along through the 7th with 80 pitches, he threw 15 in the bizarre 8th where they put some good swings on him.  I saw no reason to let him throw 22 more in the 9th.  And you know I'm not a "pitch count" guy.  I just would have let him hit the shower after a relatively easy game, and let a fresh arm finish off the last three.

And I'm sure the part about losing the game was what Hinch told him when he went out there with two out and a man on.  "This is your last hitter, one way or another".  I'm glad it worked out.

You make some great points. His stuff had started to flatten out in the 8th. Seeing the world through the eyes of a pitcher, I naturally want the pitcher to get a shot at a rare complete game.

If Teoscar goes on the DL and the Astros call someone up, I'd like it to be Tucker.  He's hitting well in AAA.  And he isn't getting any younger.  He needs a showcase if, for no other reason, so the Astros can trade him and get some value in exchange.  It seems pretty clear that there isn't a lot of room long-term for Tucker on this team.

Nonsense. That's not a valid reason for calling a player up. If Teo goes on the DL, I'd bring up someone who can play CF, like Kemp. Tucker is a defensive liability even in LF.

822
Someone else should be finishing this game.

I disagree. Keuchel earned the right to try to finish it. If I had been Hinch, I wouldn't have let Keuchel lose the game, so had the winning run come to the plate, I'd have brought in Giles. But it didn't.

823
I didn't think that Springer hit the ball far enough to score Aoki.

824
Is Mills the bench coach for Cleveland?

Yes, just like he was for Tito in Boston.

Shit. Can't someone call it? Fuck boys.

In all honesty, the ball in no man's land is a tough one to call, particularly if you're not sure that you can get to it.

It's amazing that Luhnow was able to move him.

Houston would have a lot fewer double plays if Hinch were a little more aggressive on sending runners on 3-2 counts with less than two outs.

You're kidding, right? In my opinion, that's a recipe for running yourself out of a bunch of innings.

That's it, except for the 4 or 5 fairly decent starts per year.

I've seen a lot of Jiminez, ass he pitched for Cleveland one year and had a good year. I've always liked his arm but hated his command. Bases on balls are a huge problem for him.

I don't know why Baltimore always flies under the radar.  They have a lot of talent and have had recent success.

Baltimore's starting pitching is sketchy, especially with Tillman out. They just got a big night out of Ubaldo Jimnez. Ubaldo Fucking Iminez. Who expected that?

Everyone makes mistakes, base running, fielding errors, wild pitches, what have you.  They're part of the game.  And I understand, and generally agree with, the old adage about not making the first or third out at 3B.  But I'm not a slave to it.  Situations mean everything in baseball, plus I'm a firm believer that being aggressive is rewarded in the long term.  I can accept getting thrown out, or getting picked off on occasion if it means swiping bags and taking extra bases regularly.

Our season is winding down.  The latest lesson is sometimes your best isn't good enough.

He was on the mound for a must win area game.  He pitched a complete game.  7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 9 K, 1 BB, 1 HBP.  His team lost 1-0 and got one hit by the opposing pitcher.  The run scored in an inning where there were 4 errors made.  The team has now made 92 errors in 30 games!

The team has lost 8 of their last 10 the two wins were with my son on the mound.  The team is falling apart.  It is sad to watch.  He will likely have one more start before the year is out.

Current line is 3-3 / 47 2/3 IP / 36 H/ 26 R/ 12 ER/ 50 K/ 4 BB/ 3 HBP/ 1.76 ERA/ .881 WHIP

We've all played on "that" team. Tell him to keep his chin up and keep competing.

He's 32 years old and these games count. I'm not giving up on him by any means, but players succeeding should be rewarded with playing time, not the guys with the biggest contracts. Marwin will take more ABs in the near term rotating in for both Bregman and Gurriel until they get going, and I'm fine with that, but I'd like to see Marwin playing most days until they actually do.

I agree that you have to keep Marwin's bat in the lineup. If that's at the expense of Gurriel, then so be it.

857
Devo fucking rocks. Let's make him a winner, boys!

858
Gurriel has been abysmal and doesn't have an MLB track record of success to his credit. Marwin should be provided the majority of the ABs/1B starts until Gurriel earns them.

I don't know about "less skilled".  Most pitchers aren't notably skilled at hitting.  It would be like the NBA allowing a designated free throw shooter.  Watching Dwight Howard clank 7 out of 10 isn't any more skilled than a designated shooter would be.  I understand why you don't like the DH, but it's not because pitchers are better hitters.

Personally, I loved the DH when I was pitching, because I could hide my absolute lack of prowess with the bat, save bunting. I could bunt pretty well. The arguments against the DH seem to be losing momentum. I see the DH in both leagues within five years.

The coach was obviously sticking to the old "rule" about not walking the winning run.  And there's nothing wrong with trying to get a strike 3-1, but I certainly wouldn't have thrown a fastball.  Since he got the kid to swing and miss on an off speed pitch earlier in the count, another changeup or a breaking ball, off the plate, wouldn't have been an unreasonable selection.  Throwing him a "get a strike" fastball there is just bad baseball, however.

I'm with HH. The kid who already turned on a fastball of mine isn't going to get another one. He'd have seen a steady diet of splitters and curveballs.

Yep 3rd is very shaky.  Different catcher this time.  And he only had one other three ball count.  He threw first pitch strikes to 25 of 32 batters.  67/98 pitches were strikes.

Outstanding!!! Fuck those hitters. I own the inside of the plate!

So throwing at your players is dangerous and just being an asshole. But if we start dismissing every coach who intimidates and yells at his players, there won't be many coaches left.  My HS coach once pulled his own tooth out to make a point. He also threw bats in the team bus. He made most of the team cry at one point or another. He was kind of an asshole.

I agree with you about screaming, cussing coaches. I always performed better for those coaches. However, times are much different than when we played. Today's coach has to be much better behaved.

This type of asshat was plentiful back in my day.  However, in the day where everyone can be a reporter with a video camera to gather evidence, this type of behavior usually gets spread like wildfire and forces authorities to take note and action. This guy should be banned. He's obviously a good coach, who has attracted some very good players. But this "win at all costs" mentality just doesn't cut it today.

ICYMI, Keuchel with his first action of the spring today tossing 35 pitches over 3 scoreless innings today vs. Nats while allowing just one hit. Reports were his FB sat in the 87-89 range.

From what I could see on the Nats TV feed, he had great movement, but his control was spotty. Still, the only one who really squared up one of his pitches was Harper on a 3-1 offering in the first frame, but it was a loud out to CF. I thought that he looked really good for this point, and I was encouraged to see Hinch let him pitch the third inning in his first outing.,

So after how many pitches does the next guy start warming up in the bullpen? Doesn't seem like he'd have very much time, unless he was already warm - he was probably expecting to enter in the 3rd or 4th inning.

I think that they started warming up the pitcher around the 18-20 pitch mark.

There are going to be people in your life who in trying to be helpful, do just the opposite.

My son was pitching last night.  Rebounded nicely from a lead off HR to a kid who went 7-7 in the DH with a BB and HBP.

In the 4th inning, the catcher took a foul ball off the leg.  Ump goes out to the mound to give the catcher time to recover.  Tells my son, "if you had a better catcher, you would have 5-10 more strikes".  There was no need to say that to my son.  He doesn't get to choose his catcher.  So by trying to make my son feel better, he increased tension between my son and the catcher.  Thanks blue. Why don't you just add if the 3B hadn't committed 2 errors in the second, he would have thrown another inning before reaching his pitch count limit.

He wasn't wrong.  Catcher was not sticking pitches. He was letting the glove drop and was taking ball out of the zone.

How do you respond to such a comment? The umpire was out of line in my opinion, even if he was right.

Like a lot of baserunning, whether it is a "good" play depends entirely on the situation (score, outs, inning, pitcher, next hitter) and a proper reading of the timing of everything - how close the runner is to home, when the fielder is releasing the ball, how the cutoff man is lined up, and so on.

In other words, I'd feel better about Jeff Bagwell doing it than Hunter Pence or Jonathan Villar.

Obviously, who the outfielder is factors in quite a bit. You probably don't want to try for home if the ball has gone to Cespedes, who has a fucking cannon.

896
I agree that your opinion is wrong, as in it is not based on actual facts.

We'll have to agree to disagree. The facts are clear and immutable. Democrats created the welfare state and practically every expansion of it save the Medicare prescription drug addition that the scourge President Bush 43 championed.

897
And Republicans just want to help big business.  Too big to fail.  My ass.  The greedy bastards take advantage of what they can and then the little guy pays for it.  That bail out of banks and whatnot by W pissed me off because they were too big to fail and would hurt the economy.  Well, guess what, it did hurt the economy.  Where's your reform for that?

I didn't like the bailout as much as you didn't. I would have allowed some of those poorly run banks to fail. Remember that I'm not a Republican; I am a constitutional conservative. Believe it or not, I was disappointed in President Trump's big government embrace in the SOTU last night. I don't think that's why he got elected. In my opinion, he got elected to change how the government is run, which includes shrinking the size of government and restoring some personal liberty.

898
Weren't you the one who first started throwing out the snowflake label? So who exactly is attacking whom?

I did toss out the snowflake label because I love to have fun with you knuckleheads! I can take it, but there are some folks out there who are scared of you folks and simply stay silent.

899
Attacked?  What are you, a snowflake?

Seriously, isn't this the same argument made in the 80s and 90s, before welfare reform?  Are there still really a lot of people who aspire to remain on welfare?

Also, saying that having people dependent on the government is what Democrats want is so weak: I know lots of Democrats and have never heard that sentiment expressed.  Not once actually.

People too often become complacent and accept the status quo. There's nothing better than a little personal motivation.

Democrats frequently fight that argument because it makes them look badly. However, their actions belie the truth, which is that most of their legislative efforts are designed to do exactly that. So it really isn't weak. I'm no snowflake either. I just know you people and how you are going to respond. You'd be surprised at the private messages I get from people who agree with me but who are too frightened of being attacked by you all to express their support. They see how you treat me and others who deign to disagree with you all.

900

I had one friend ask me, "Aren't you tired of paying for everyone?"  I told her, I guess not since I think people still need help.  Not much of response from her after that.

I'll bite. We're not doing people on welfare any favors by killing their will to earn on their own. The welfare state has emasculated western Europe, and we're on the precipice of it. I'm all for helping those who are truly incapable of doing for themselves. But we've let too many freeloaders and grifters into that system.

We destroy their self-preservation instinct, and make them dependent upon that government handout, which is exactly where many Democrats want them. In my opinion, this is immoral and wrong. I know that most of you disagree with that, and I'll be attacked for saying it out loud here.

I'm the new commish of this league, and we find ourselves in need of two owners to keep the league at 14 teams. We're looking for someone who is willing to be active in the league and actually give winning it a try.

The new owner also should be willing to put up $20 as an entry fee. If you have any interest and are willing, please respond here or send me a PM.

The league is a lot of fun, the owners are active and just about all of the teams predate my association now five years ago. i'm not very good at it, but I really enjoy the War, and it keeps me abreast of MLB very well.

This league is dedicated to the memory of MiHoBa, a longtime AC/OWA legendary poster who left us far too young at 48. It's hard to believe that he's been gone as long as he has.

I hope to hear from you!

I think it's plain that some supporters of this chaos and historic ineptitude have thought this through fairly carefully. They welcome the destruction of the political and social order for a variety of reasons. Some want their factories to be able to pollute any old way they like and would rather not have some asshole from a federal entity tell them they can't. Others want to roll back as many social changes as possible that have happened since 1964. Others want to advance the economic hegemony. Others want to disassemble the mechanism through which federal taxes are assessed and paid. The lunacy that's happening gives these guys as good a backdrop as they'll get to make these otherwise implausible moves.

But I think most of the people that are cheering this on, most all of them, are doing it out of a childish venality, knowing that it pisses off people like you and Limey and they are too goddamn stupid to take a moment to realize that this shit has real consequences.

Don't forget yourself here, Chuck. I also like it because it pisses you off.

I don't think anyone on here is surprised your happy he is president.

Also, why does it seem like Republicans always try to put down those with opposing views?  Liberal is made out to be a bad word and now you are calling people snowflakes as though they are weak.

I saw a snowflake described as this, and I consider myself a snowflake.
I am not a liberal snowflake.  My feelings aren't fragile, my heart isn't bleeding.  I am a badass believer in human rights.  My toughness is in tenderness.  My strength is in the service of others.  There is nothing more fierce than formidable, unconditional love.  There is not a thing more courageous than compassion.  But if my belief in equity, empathy, goodness, and love indeed makes me or people like me snowflakes, then you should know - winter is coming.

Don't ever confuse me with a Republican. I'm a constitutional conservative. President Trump ran as much against the mainstream Republican Party of big government as he did the Democrats, and I like that a lot.

What has he done that you like?  Almost a month in he's signed only one law (legislative waiver allowing Mattis to serve as Sec'y of Defense), the only actually implementable executive order he's issued was immediately tossed as unconstitutional but had the effect of fucking with a lot of American residents/students/workers' lives while giving ISIS extra recruiting ammunition ("the blessed ban"), meanwhile he's set-off the biggest public protests in the nation's history, pissed off longstanding allies, alienated countries and people whose cooperation is needed in the fight against terror, authorize an inadequately planned and executed raid on ISIS that had disastrous results (including killing an 8 year old American citizen along with over a dozen other kids), peddled from day one a series of blatant lies (inauguration crowd size, elector college victory size, the existence of widespread voter fraud that just happens to only occur in states he lost, and the list goes on), have his spokesperson violate ethics laws by using her post in the administration to hawk his daughter's merchandise, tried to undermine the institution of the judiciary, set the record for the quickest member of an administration to be forced to resign, destabilize bedrock American international policies (NATO, One China and the Two State Solution) without any actual plan all while managing to spend more taxpayer money in one month on personal travel and security than Obama did in a full year with the added kicker that a portion of that taxpayer money gets paid directly to his companies.  And that's just off the top of my head.

ETA:  Can't believe I forgot my favorite - breaching a contract with the government of the United States.

I am genuinely curious as to what hopes conservatives like you have had fulfilled.

I love just about all of President Trump's cabinet selections (particularly Mattis at Defense and Sessions at DOJ as well as DeVos at Education and Pruitt at the EPA), his Supreme Court nominee Gorsuch seems very qualified, and I like that he's taken his talk directly to the American people by sidestepping an obviously biased lame stream media who views themselves as intelligent and important yet who still have not comprehended why or how he won. The press ruined its own credibility with the American people over the past 25 years by becoming shills for the left-wing socialist agenda. The president is simply taking advantage of that fact.

But he's also done the following: frozen the size of the federal workforce outside of the military; ordered federal agencies to cut two regulations for every new one that they propose; signed an executive order asking DOJ and DHS to withhold federal funds, except as mandated by law, from sanctuary cities that flaunt our immigration laws; approved the Dakota access pipeline and the Keystone pipeline; pulled the country out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal; undermined Obamacare by ordering federal agencies to grant exemptions from it, because if the IRS won't enforce the so-called fee that's really a tax, then the guts have been removed; and he's going to build the wall between the US and Mexico. The markets are up. Several new large jobs creations here in the US have been announced. All in all, not a bad first month for the controversial president.

The lame stream media is so hopelessly biased that it won't report on these positive developments, but the president is getting the word out anyway via his own channels. The public knows. And I wouldn't believe the so-called polls right now; they were wrong when he got elected, and they're wrong now.

I can't wait for month number two.

To the contrary, no safe space needed. I'm not one of you guys. Frankly, I just think that one anti-Trump thread is enough. However, I read that thread frequently with great interest and delight. It's fun watching you snowflakes melt down. It's hell being out of power, ain't it? Despite a couple of missteps, President Trump is doing exactly what I hoped that he'd do, and I'm glad that he's the president.

I read an article where someone opined that Tom Brady looks better at 39 than he did at 29. I'm not sure that I agree with that. However, at 39, he looks a helluva lot better than Peyton Manning did that last season with the Bronchos. Father Time can be cruel in a hurry, but if he stays in shape, I can see two to three more very productive seasons.

I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed this year's Super Bowl as it was an exciting game to the end and would love to discuss it some more. To some extent, the Patriots did to the Falcons what Clemson did to Alabama: kept their defense on the field and simply wore them out.

Beer and Queso / Re: super bowl

There is polling that supports this.  Americans, when asked if the President should obey court orders, break 65/25 "yes" (the other 10 being "don't knows").   Trump voters only?  51% "no".

It never ceases to amaze me how easily frightened the Republican base is.  They act like bullies, but lash out randomly when threatened and really love a strong man character who makes them feel safe and cozy.

Thread hijack. There's already one anti-Trump thread alive right now. Stick to that one, please.

I don't know much about the guy, other than his coaching career at LSU.  But he's still a big name and went through a really messy firing.  I think if he has success at UH, ESPN and other media outlets will start running redemption stories and convince him that he's better than a non-P5 school.

I'm not knocking UH here, and this isn't Longhorn elitism talking (I went to UH for a bit, too).  But if he even sniffs a CFP spot in the first three years and [insert random P5 school] comes calling, he gone.

Les Miles is a straight up classy guy. I don't think he'd do that. Plus, LSU is paying him $150,000 per month as a buyout.

From what I hear indirectly from inside sources, this did not go down as advertised.  I think Charlie should have done better at game management (and thus W-L record), but I also think he got shafted on this and should have been given a 4th year.  It also looks to me like Herman's real skills lie in manipulative negotiating tactics.  On the field as a coach, it looks to me like he is a risk-taker that results in some unexpected wins and some unexpected losses.  We'll see how that goes down in a couple of years.

My reservation about Herman was the fact that his defense at Houston was weak.

For whatever it's worth, UT's pitching coach said Jason Castro was the best college hitter they faced.

I got to watch first hand what Will Clark and Raphael Palmeiro did at Mississippi State and what Bo Jackson did at Auburn. They were incredible. However, hitting in college and hitting in the Show are two totally different things.

a 30 year prejudice? wow.

I can't respect people who knowingly lied in writing to a federal judge. Call me crazy (which would neither be the first nor last time), but I just can't. Had there been a personal consequence right then and there, a bar sanction or suspension, it might have spared us all a career of living on the edge of criminality. Trump was far from a perfect candidate, but I respect his continued ability to get things done, which iOS what we sorely need right now. I hope that he's as much a thorn in the asses of the mainstream Republican Party as he is the Democrats.

Texans squeak out a win in J-ville.

But...the Saints...ouch.  Game tying touchdown in the last minute, lining up for the game-winning extra point...blocked and run back for 2-points to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

For once, I get to watch the Saints, and what do they do? Break my heart. And I started Michael Thomas, who lost two fumbles in the game, on my fantasy league team. That's another ouch.

Don't forget wanting to start a war if rude gestures are made towards US armed forces, compared to a former senator and secretary of state who is liked and respected by the majority of world leaders.

Happy - I'm curious when you made up your mind and whether the Comey letter had much of anything to do with that.

The second Comey letter had nothing to do with it, although I laughed at Comey's second no evidence letter that came out the sunday before the election, which was obviously the product of severe political pressure from the White House.

The Justice Department has seriously hampered those investigations in a partisan way. Can you imagine doing an investigation without subpoena power? That's what they were working with. I believe that a nonpartisan prosecutor with a nonpartisan FBI would find enough evidence against Clinton in both the pay-to-play and private server issues to try and convict her.

In the end, it was just too much baggage for Clinton for me to vote for her. Again, I believe that it goes back to that contempt order back in the 1980's. Had there been an ethics intervention back then, she might have suffered some consequences and learned a valuable lesson. But her husband was governor of Arkansas, so nothing happened. When she skated by with the firm paying the $5,000 contempt fine by the court, she was emboldened to take additional and increasingly larger liberties for lo these many years, leading all the way up to the present.

Your entire response to my entire rant is invalidated by your critical omission of the Supreme Court. They invalidated much of what Obama and the brief democratic majority accomplished. That will not be the case now.

I have said this before, but I'll say it again: The Senate should have given the SCOTUS nominee a hearing. Don't be surprised if they still do so, because there are a lot of R's who are scared about who Trump might nominate.

I was totally surprised by the outcome. I knew she was unpopular but still figured she'd win in a landslide because Trump is such a megalomaniacal kook. I think maybe Hillary lost because of the cumulative effect of a multitude of circumstances going as far back as Bill's presidential peccadilloes, the Bengazi tragedy, the damning content of the hacked emails, the deception and manipulation of the DNC, the pay for play scandal, the $250,000.00 speeches to Wall Street bankers... etc., finally took it's toll. Then the party fractured, die hard establishment democrats who live in a an echo chamber disregarded the progressive cries of the Bernie supporters. But not because she was a woman.

I agree. She was an awful candidate, but it was her turn to bat. I was pleasantly surprised by the result. Trump successfully painted Hillary as the establishment candidate, when the public was anti-establishment. His "drain the swamp" message resonated.

The onus is now on the Republicans to govern. We need some real leadership in the worst way and to facilitate more economic development and to spread that to the middle class. The beauty of this situation is Trump is really not beholden to any major special interest groups, and he will be as much a thorn in the establishment Republicans' sides as anyone else.

I'm very much looking forward to his first 100 days to see what he can accomplish.

The SP market just got (perhaps) marginally better. Cubs declined the $12MM option for 2017 for Jason Hammel. The decision to forego the "exercise and trade" avenue was (apparently) to not "exploit a loyal player". The team's PR statement says the 34-year old righty is healthy but he did have elbow tightness which caused the Cubbies to leave him off their postseason roster.

Hammel was shit toward the end of the season. Maddon had no confidence in him. Hell, they left him off of the playoff roster. I'd take a pass.

If you've followed the Cubs at all this year, his fears are well-founded. The Cubs went out and got Chapman to help get games to the closer, because the guys he had weren't getting it done.

Not a chance.  It was cool to rag on ownership and the front office in 2012 so your theory probably had a lot of steam at the time, but I don't believe that for a second.

The year Mills was fired, 2012, was the first year of Luhnow and new ownership.  Significant change to team and front office personnel was inevitable, and that's clearly what it was.

The problem with this is, things DID go south despite throwing every pitcher they had in the pen. I know their pen has been hot garbage, but throwing the next piece of garbage at them instead of trusting the reliable guys (like Romo) is just crazy. I'd rather lose with my best pitcher out there than with my 5th best pitcher because I burned my other 4 best then didn't trust them to get outs.

Over. Managing.

I'd have gone with Romo, win or lose.

Completely glossing over Bochy's over-managing disaster in the top of the inning?

I rise to the spirited defense of Bruce Bochy. I follow the Giants pretty closely, and their bully has been a train wreck all year. Simply put, Bochy and Righetti have no confidence in any of their relievers, and that feeling is justified. They really missed Jeremy Affeldt, who retired after last season. For my money, Bruce Bochy is the best skipper in baseball, and it's not even close.

I don't think it's signing someone just to spend money. We could use another OF bat, and obviously some pitching. I think our lineup is good but one more good hitter makes it that much better.

Do you consider Trumbo an OF, because I don't. If you could open Crane's wallet for an OF, who would you get?
