Actually the Astros fucked up. Diaz had not yet spent the full 10 days in the minors and could not be called up. But the Guduan move had already been made and couldn't be revoked.
So the Astros will be operating with just 24 players tonight and with a man short in the bullpen. Paulino will be used if needed.
Another solid, super efficient outing by Franklin last night taking just 64 pitches to finish 5 innings - 2 singles, 1 walk, 0 runs, 3 strikeouts. He is mastering high A at only 19 - will not turn 20 until December.
Osvaldo Duarte and Carmen Benedetti both to the 7-day DL. Taking their roster spots are 3B Tyler Wolfe and OF Bryan de la Cruz, both up from EST. De la Cruz is seeing his first action of 2017. Out of the Dominican, he signed for $170K back in 2013 and last year split time between the G-stros and V-Cats. Wolfe had previously filled in last month at CC.

Also being brought up from the DSL club is 21-year old RHP Ronaldo Marrero. He was an infielder in the Phillies organization who was released by them last August. He was signed by the Astros last month and converted to pitcher. In 18 IP in the Dominican, he had a 1.47 ERA and 0.71 WHIP with 13 whiffs vs 3 walks.
Merrill, Duncan and Marrero all saw their first action in today's game. And it was the kid from the club team with the best performance of any Astros' pitcher on the day--retired all 6 batters he faced, 2 by strikeout.

Charlie Morton will make his second rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Fresno, A.J. Hinch said. He is scheduled for 3-4 innings.
Dan Straily (for one season), Scott Feldman, Asher Wojciechowski and now Jake Buchanan. The Reds continue to pick up former Astros' hurlers having claimed Buchanan off waivers and added him to their big league roster.

2nd rounder JJ Matijevic is scheduled to make his debut today, playing LF and batting 3rd in the lineup.
Julks reached base 3 times on a single, double and HBP and swiped a couple of bases and the Albany Times-Union ran a profile on him.
The roster of course will change significantly as more and more 2017 draft signings occur and a number of the college guys get assigned to TRC.
Angels have signed Doug Fister.
After 3 starts in AAA for Salt Lake City (16 hits and 5 walks allowed in 15.2 innings with 10 strikeouts), the Angels have released him. Had an opt-out in his contract that was exercisable today.
He's been signed by the Red Sox and will start on Sunday against...the Angels.
Michael Papierski and LSU on ESPN tonight at 7 CT in their CWS game vs Florida State. And Corbin Martin goes to the mound tomorrow as the Aggies take on Louisville (ESPN, 1 CT).
Claimed on waivers a few weeks ago, Kevin Chapman was outrighted by the Braves today off their 40-man roster.

Albert Abreu, rhp, Yankees. Abreu, acquired from the Astros along with fellow righthanded flame-thrower Jorge Guzman for Brian McCann, was throwing bullets Wednesday for low Class A Charleston. Abreu was touching 100 mph, according to the RiverDogs’ Twitter account, and struck out a career-high 11 in 5.2 innings in a 4-0 win over Augusta (Giants).

Don't look now but Colin Moran is resurgent. He's altered his swing a bit to generate more lift. The result has been a serious increase in extra base hits and a small decline in his batting average.

Who knows whether he'll make the official roster when the season opens, but noticed that LHP Ben Smith pitched today in the exhibition game versus the Albany Dutchmen of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. Smith of course was a 17th-round pick of the Astros back in 2014 out of Coastal Carolina. He didn't pitch that season as at the time he was drafted he was rehabbing from TJS. He didn't pitch in 2015 either after being diagnosed with lymphoma. Finally returned to the mound for the 2016 season, pitching mostly at Greeneville. He walked 45 in 39.2 IP.
Good luck to him in 2017.
Also, last year's 5th-rounder Abraham Toro-Hernandez was behind the plate for the V-Cats today. He played 3B exclusively for Greeneville last year but the expectation when drafted was that he would be moved to catcher at some point.

The Joe Perez pick got a lot of "Wows" in the BA offices. We didn't see that coming.
Perez recently had TJS. MLB draft tracker said 3B but he's also a RHP. Touched 99 before the surgery. BA writeup said the U of Miami commit was also extremely impressive as a hitter this spring.

A lot of hitters get linked to Houston, such as [Jake] Burger and UC Irvine outfielder/second baseman Keston Hiura in the college ranks and Beck, Adell and Pratto on the high school side. If the Astros' favored choices are already gone, they could shift gears, look for a discount deal here and try to sign a half-dozen players to seven-figure bonuses.
Another local product that's not on this list, but on other projected draft lists is Fort Bend Travis OF Cole Turney.

The Blue roster looked up to date to me. Wasn't quite sure about the Orange roster. Also when I looked at both rosters I didn't see 2016 signees Nova, Carrasco, Solis, Alvarez and Ortega. It could mean GCL is the destination for some of those guys (Nova?) or that there are still some roster adjustments to be made.
I think the rosters there now are up to date.

Ruiz (who made his MLB debut with the Braves in 2016 as a Sept callup), however, will open the year back at AAA Gwinnett. The former Astros' 4th-rounder (2012) is still just 22 years old.

OF Drew Ferguson went 2-for-5 Saturday night, extending his hit streak to 17 games. Ferguson now owns the 4th-longest hit streak in Hooks history. OF Jorge Cortes has the club record, hitting safely in 27 consecutive games during the 2006 TL Championship campaign. IF Tommy Manzella posted a 20-game hit streak in 2008 and C J.R. House notched an 18-gamer in 2006.
Ferguson is batting .343 with 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and a .405 on-base average during this surge, which is the 2nd-longest active streak in the Texas League. Chuck Taylor of Arkansas has hit safely in his last 21 assignments.

Some scouts are calling third baseman Rio Ruiz the “most improved” player they’ve seen this spring.
Ruiz (who made his MLB debut with the Braves in 2016 as a Sept callup), however, will open the year back at AAA Gwinnett. The former Astros' 4th-rounder (2012) is still just 22 years old.

Alvarez is of course the Cuban player the Dodgers effectively signed for $4MM (inclusive of tax) and then flipped to the Astros last year for Josh Fields. He spent some brief time last year in the DSL after last playing competitively in 2014 in the CNS.

I thought I read today, but I don't remember where, someone prognasticating that Romero was going to be a third round pick.
Keith Law: He would have gone in the first, I would have ranked him more towards the second (it’s not a good delivery), and I think he now goes second or third with a significant discount. Getting in a fight with a teammate on top of a mountain of previous incidents tells me either he’s got a real mental illness or he’s totally irresponsible.
Given the number of early picks the team has, if Romero is available at57 or 7553, 56, or 75 should the Astros take the risk?
That's pretty cool. I suppose they got him on a plane(s) from Fresno yesterday. That's a long series of flights as there's no direct flights from Fresno to NYC.

Carlson has seen a steady progression in his stuff over the past 12 months, including close to a five MPH uptick in his sitting fastball velocity (now regularly in the 91-95 mph range) and significant improvement in the consistency of both his slider and changeup (each of which project above average). The broad-framed righty has already begun to add strength in his trunk and core and projects as a durable workhorse with lots of heft to his stuff.

RHP Cesar Valdez--the MLFA signed a minor league deal with the A's. The Astros had signed the 31-year old ex-MLBer off the scrap heap last January after he had been pitching in the Mexican League the previous four years. Turned into one of the most effective starting pitchers in the PCL this past season.
DFA'd today after making 4 appearances for Oakland.
That's my guess.

Yes, that Casey Coleman--son and grandson of MLB pitchers (both name Joe), came up with the Cubs and pitched for them in 2010-2012 and last pitched in the bigs with KC in 2014. Pitched in the minors for KC, Tampa and Seattle in 2015-2016 before finding himself in indy ball this season. 12 hits and 2 walks allowed in 10.1 IP for the Bees with 7 Ks.
His OPS ought to be over 1.000.

The uncertainty regarding Romero - he has been suspended twice from the UH baseball program in the past 14 months - has some projections dropping him from possible top-10 selection to late first round. One scout said he would not be surprised if Romero dropped to the second round. In the most recent D1Baseball.com draft projections, Romero dropped from middle of the first round to No. 43, which would place him early in the second round.
