Berry deserved better.

I think we all can agree on this.

An honest question, though: What was it that made Berry such a good hitting coach?  I don't share the analytical baseball mind that most here have, and the only way for me to recognize a hitting instructor's worth is by watching plate discipline and, sadly, statistics.  And to be honest, neither of those have been impressive this year.  I'm not saying any of it is Berry's fault (mainly because I like the guy), and I understand what you said re: players listening.  But if a coach isn't getting through to his players, regardless of whose fault it is, doesn't that spell impending doom?  The proverbial "He lost the team" situation?

Not trying to be argumentative here, just digging for more info.

1-0, Astros.  Bottom 3rd, Bourn on first.

Not going to copy the lineups, but the 1-5 hitters look the same, Castro hitting 6th, then CJ and Sanchez.

Okay, multiple choice.

a.) Tonya Harding now (as part of the pantheon of former, uh. . . whatevers now employed as commentators on The World's Dumbest---- shows.

b.) Tonya Harding on her wedding night (to that Gillooley dude.)  I've heard she looked better then (relatively speaking), I wouldn't know.

c.) Matt Groening

d.) OSF

Only check one.

I'd take a) and b) over most of the Lithia Park hippies I met in Ashland, OR.  And I like hippies.
But if pressed, I'd go with e) Mirror Pond Ale.  Or, you know, OSF.

Punch Brothers - Antifogmatic

I got this album based on a review that called it "Radiohead with bluegrass instruments."  Don't know if I agree with that description, but it is a really, really good album.  It's kinda, I dunno, abstract bluegrass?  Here's a live clip of my favorite song on the disc.  One of the bonus tracks is actually a Radiohead cover, so maybe that's where the comparison came from.  Either way, it's good.

Also, I think GBB talked about the new Hold Steady earlier in this thread.  That album KICKS ASS.  "Hurricane J" and "A Slight Discomfort" are the standouts for me.

Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
Pretty great psychadelic rock.

Non-aussie music:

Anais Mitchell - Hadestown

The Hold Steady album is really different from their previous, but I like it.  It's like the transition U2 made with Achtung Baby (not in terms of where they went musically, just in that it's a curveball)

This sounds interesting.  I've hesitated getting their new album because I've always thought they were a one-trick pony, even if they perform that one trick extremely well.  I really liked Boys and Girls in America but didn't give their last one many proper listens.

I'm finally getting into the new National album after a dozen or so times through it.  The first four tracks don't do much for me, but things really get good at "Afraid of Everyone" and it doesn't let up.  "Bloodbuzz Ohio," "England" and "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks" are the other standouts to me.  Here's a clip of the National and Sufjan Stevens playing Letterman a few nights ago.

Either way, I suggest giving High Violet a couple more listens if you didn't like it the first time.

Hoodoo Gurus - Purity of Essence - First new album in 5 years.  Sure their old and cranky but hooks still ooze out. After nearly 30 years in the business, the Hoodoo Gurus still combine melodic power pop and garage rock with a bit of psychedelia, and "Purity of Essence" finds them in top form. A rocking good time by Australia's most underrated and second greatest rock band. Probably can't find it in a record store near you. I had to order mine online.

Wow - I'm gonna check this out for sure.  Never heard of them.

I agree with a lot of the above posts.  I currently use a Denon receiver (great) and Boston Acoustics speakers (meh), but have positive experiences with Pioneer in the past.  Haven't tried an Onkyo or the Polk/Klipsch speakers, though.  Check cnet - they're really good at this stuff.

Also, as far as I can tell, wireless only helps in the initial setup.  If you're willing to spend an afternoon stringing it all together, I wouldn't bother with it.  Of course, I've never used a wireless setup, so like all other things I'm probably speaking out of my ass.

Is it an HP laptop?  They had a run of laptops with bad nVidia graphic cards and when the board dies, they just replace them with another bad nVidia card.  They generally don't last more than a year.  Supposedly, nVidia  knew about it too. You can find out more here.

Baking a laptop motherboard is a bad idea (I shouldn't have to tell you this).  If the fix works at all, it's likely because it cooked the thermal sensors on the mainboard, so they won't shut off the board to protect it anymore.  Of course this will eventually lead to the heat death of your mainboard anyway.

Nope, it's a piece of shit Alienware (pre-Dell buyout).  It's artifacting like crazy when I run anything with graphics; other than that it works fine.  Alienware and nVidia have absolute crap customer service, too, fwiw.

I'm really thinking about trying this out, though.  It sounds whimsical enough to work, considering nothing else does.  Maybe I'll fry the whole thing and convince my wife I need a new laptop....

I don't know if this falls under the "don't believe everything you read on the interwebs" category or not, but I'm at my wits end and thinking about doing it.
My laptop's gfx card (nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX) is failing on me, getting green/purple/white lines across video editing software, games, etc.  Lots of times it freezes on me and I get a BSOD.  I've tried every driver I can find, every setting I can think of, reseated the video card - even replaced the mobo.  Nothing works.

So a lot of forums say that baking a failing video card in the oven at 385 degrees (F) for ~10 minutes fixes the problem.  Here's one success story.  There are even YouTube videos on it.  The logic behind it is that you get rid of any moisture and melt the soldering to make new connections (or something along those lines).

Anybody ever heard of this or tried it?

Thank you, Ian.  First, can we dispense with the "good evening" bullshit?  It's only 3 PM in London.

With that unpleasantry out of the way, I am pleased to inform that you have correctly surmised that SpikesnStars, LLC is in need of a Hollywood summer party.  While I respect the fact that your company may have novel ideas, our needs are very specific:

1.  We will have need of 24 attractive yet nondescript women.  They should arrive at the party dressed only in thongs and black robes.  they should also be wearing golden masks to conceal their identities.  Any party guest's displeasure with any of these women will constitute a breach of contract and result in the full refund of our fees.

2.  We will have need of an organist with the ability to play a keyboard while blindfolded.  Should the organist resemble David Arquette, this will constitute a breach of contract and result in the full refund of our fees.

3.  We will have need of a large mansion with randomly placed potted plants.  Lack of plants will constitute a breach of contract and result in the full refund of our fees.

4.  Guests are only to be admitted to the party with the password "Fidelio".

5.  Admittance of any guest with the correct password but who resembles Tom Cruise will constitute a breach of contract and result in the full refund of our fees.

6.  You're going to need a shitload of bleach afterwards.  Any cleaning will be at your expense.

Nominated, if only for creativity.  I especially like #3.

What I didn't catch por la radio is the obvious Andy Partidge yelp in Hutchison's vocals. There's a definite Scottish lean to the yelp, too, which I love. It's been ages since I was nutso about a Scottish band and it's about time.

Help me out here: Who is Andy Partidge?  Been racking my brain and I can't place the name.  And I'm too lazy to Google right now.

Also, the Scots are putting out some great music lately.  Check out The Twilight Sad (a bit darker than the Rabbits, but a great sound) and We Were Promised Jetpacks (I think I mentioned them on this thread before).  They're all on the same label and from what I've read each band has influenced each other in one way or another.

I've been giving Frightened Rabbit a rest for a bit (don't want to burn out), and have been listening to new albums from:
Ruby Suns
Matt Pond PA
LCD Soundsystem
Dr. Dog
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Roky Erickson
Broken Social Scene
Josh Ritter

All of which are good (if not great), but I expect the new National and Band of Horses to take priority when they leak.

Dave Rawlings Machine - A Friend of a Friend
Absolutely amazing singer/songwriter stuff.  Has a classic feel to it.  They actually reference, unabashedly, "Cortez the Killer," and it's a pretty damn good reference.  A live, four-song video set can be seen HERE.  "Ruby" is probably the best track.

Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me
I'm ashamed to admit it, but this is too good to ignore.  I haven't liked any of her previous albums, but this is worth the listen.  "Good Intentions Paving Company" is a good track to start with.  Keep in mind it's a 2-hour, 3-CD album from an indie harp-player (harpist? harpie?).  So, uh, if that's not your thing, move along.

I am happy to report that you can legitimately fit a cocker spaniel named Sadie 25 lbs of crawfish in an 80-qt tub, as well as all the fixings.  I made 75 lbs in three batches.
A few revelations from my first crawfish boil:

1. Men eat more crawfish than women.
2. Don't wear sandals near the 80-qt pot of boiling water.
3. It's actually a LOT of work.
4. Airline Seafood's seasoning mix is ridiculously good.
5. I bought entirely too much crawfish, corn and potatoes, and not near enough sausage.

Thanks again for all the advice.  Any good hangover remedies out there?

The Big Crawfish Boil is this afternoon, and I think I'm ready to go (thanks for all of the responses, they've been a big help).  I'm going to pick up 75 lbs of live crawfish at Airline Seafood today around noon and I'm bringing my dad's old fishing cooler to store them.  I figure a couple bags of ice (unopened) will keep them alive til I start cooking (around 4).
I also picked up andouiile (sp?) sausage, lemons, garlic, onions, red potatoes, corn, mushrooms and (don't kill me) green beans.  I've had green beans in a crawfish batch before and they were ridiculously tasty, so I thought I'd try it again.  Gonna grab the seasoning at Airline when I get the bugs.
I'm still unsure if I'm going to purge in salt water or just a heavy rinse of fresh water, but I'll let the beer decide that for me at the last minute.

One question:  I have the 80-qt tub to cook with, how many batches would you reckon 75 lbs of crawfish would be?

Oh, and I got enough beer to drown a horse, so I think we're set there, too.
Thanks again, and any last-minute recommendations are appreciated if I've done something stupid.

...the Morning Benders.

I'm really liking this, thanks for the heads-up.

Just added to the library:

We Were Promised Jetpacks
- These Four Walls (2009)
Another great Scottish indie group (same label as Frightened Rabbit, Twilight Sad).  After a listen or two it's really good stuff.  Pitchfork's SXSW report said they killed on stage.  Their songs aren't as tight as the Rabbits' are, but it's still a great sound.  Worth a listen.

She & Him - Volume 2
Haven't listened to it yet, just wanted to let all the Zooey admirers know it's "available."

Five days ago I'd never heard of these guys, now they're popping up everywhere. I watched the TV show Chuck last night and in the closing sequence the background music was "Swim Until You Can't See Land."

Cool!  It's good to hear they're getting some commercial exposure.

I know it's the "hip" thing to declare that a band's single isn't your favorite track on the album, thus implying a deep, personal connection with said band and/or album, but really, I like three or four songs better than "Swim...."  "Foot Shooter," "The Loneliness" and "Skip the Youth" all sound fantastic to these ears.
Which isn't to say "Swim..." isn't a great tune -- it most certainly is.

Really, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately one less, Mark Linkous of Sparkelhorse (and earlier The Dancing Hoods) killed himself last week and that is just a bummer. Poor bastard was a troubled soul but a great artist.

Great call, couldn't agree more.  That DJ Dangermouse/Sparklehorse album last year was pretty darn good.  I also liked his few collaborataions with Radiohead.

Glad you liked them.  Really wish I could make that show at the Parrish.

Other good bands in spite of their animal names:

Grizzly Bear
Wolf Parade
Department of Eagles
Andrew Bird (yes, it's his real name but it counts)
Phoenix
Band of Horses
Wolfmother
Frog Eyes
White Rabbits
Animal Collective

I heard a piece about this band on the radio yesterday (maybe you heard the same one?) and was most impressed.

Nope, haven't heard them on the radio, but a buddy of mine told me he heard them on a Dallas-area indie rock station.

If you liked what you heard at first glance I highly recommend you check out the whole album.  It's solid from start to stop (my favorite song has changed five times - no joke).  It's creative and robust without being depressing or smug.
It's easily my favorite album of the year so far.

My new favorite:

Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks

Good, polished Scottish indie rock.  It's about all I listen to lately.
Their MySpace page has the new single "Swim until you can't see land" streaming, but nothing else from the current album.  Their last one, Midnight Organ Fight, was pretty damn good, too, if not a little rough around the edges.

I got the Oban at the same recommendation from a Spec's guy, liked it.

Call me a chick, Bench, but I'm impressed you keep a bottle of Lagavulin around.  If I had my way I'd drink their 16-year morning, noon and night.  Absolutely love the stuff.

And say what you want about cheap (shitty) scotch, but that's what got me into the drink, much like Miller Lite for beer.  Sure, Famous Grousse doesn't come close to the good stuff, but when you're strapped for cash ANY scotch is better than NO scotch (not taking into account shitty scotch that costs a lot).

Hudson, I eagerly await your rebuttal.  I also like IPAs and hoppy beers.

"We understood it. Then he understood it. And it was impossible to regain faith in the system. That's what led to distrust in the system."

By late summer, a half-dozen or so players were wearing T-shirts that read "Really?" -- a not-so-subtle form of fashion rebellion against a manager clearly in over his skis.

After reading through several pages of the gumbo thread a few weeks back, I figure this is as good a place as any to ask for crawfish advice.  I'm hosting a crawfish boil in a few weeks and I know next to nothing about the process.  I don't have the equipment, I don't know what ingredients to buy -- I don't know where to even begin.  I've "helped" cook 'em before, but my job duties consisted of drinking and fetching beer.  Two things I actually know a lot about.

I've seen the big metal tubs and burners at Academy, so I was thinking about buying the equipment there.  Any reason to avoid the generic stuff and go for something different?

Ingredients: Yes, crawfish.  Sausage, potatoes, corn, garlic, onion...but what spices?  Anything else I should toss in?  Also, where in Houston should I buy the crawfish?  I saw some at the HEB off of Buffalo Speedway today, but they looked pretty small.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

The problem is you have to have good, sound players.  Don't know that the Astros have many of those.

Point taken.  I guess I inherently expect any major leaguer to be able to play good, sound baseball -- one player's level might not be as productive as the next, but hopefully Mills will have the team ready to compete.

You SHOULD have a man-crush; Mills is a great fit I think. I watched the guy work for six hours or so yesterday and came away convinced. Yes, I know, it was a very short time, etc., but I am quite confident that anyone who saw what I saw would come away with the same impression. The people I talked to who've been there for a good while are unanimous. I have no idea how good the Astros are going to be while Mills manages the team but I am convinced that he will maintain the respect of anyone and everyone in the organization while he is there.

I feel the same way.  I haven't spent any time around (or near) the guy, nor have I talked to anybody who knows him, but from what I've read he seems like a hard-nosed, no-bullshit baseball guy.

OSF quoted:
Quote
Here was Mills' response when asked what he didn't like Thursday:

"I don't want to go too much into bit becuase I haven't talked to the players yet.

Wow, what a breath of fresh air.  I know it's unreasonable to expect drastic improvements in the W/L column, but at least they'll be playing good, sound baseball.  A consistent lineup should help matters, too.

I liked both books, too, and have read most or all of the work by both authors.  In my opinion, however, they are as different as toast and tofu.

Clavell does an excellent job of placing his characters in historically realistic contexts, with actions and opinions that are consistent with those times.  He weaves a wonderful plot, but leaves you with a better understanding of the historical factors at work.  He omits much that would be beneficial to a real (though informal) student of history, but he follows an author's variation of the Hippocratic oath ... first do no harm.  King Rat is his earliest novel, though set in a WW2 Japanese prison camp, it is more recent in its setting than all but one of his other works.  Taifun is (in my opinion) his best; even better than Shogun.

Follet writes gripping stories, and with only a few exceptions I have enjoyed them.  However, they are always painful in the way they dismember history and impose 20th century attitudes and sensibilities on characters that would never have thought or acted that way.  In many ways his approach is as heavy-handed as James Michner, though unlike Michner he does seem to come up with fresh plots for each story.  Enjoy him if you will, but beware the anachronism.  It is best to take him with a large dose of non-fiction as a chaser.  Pillars of the Earth is indeed one of my favorites, but the warning here is especially apt.

I couldn't argue with any of these points.  Like I said, I'm not a history buff, so I have zero frame of reference when it comes to historical novels.  And I agree with your description of the differences between the books; Shogun puts a lot of emphasis on the culture in which the book is based, whereas Pillars of the Earth is more of a novel that happens to take place in the 14th century (or whatever).
Either way, I loved both of them and would recommend them to anybody.  I get that from your comments as well.

It's good, sloppy rock.  They have a Hold Steady feel to them, but it's much looser and a bit, well, sloppier.

Beach House

I wasn't around in the 60s or much of the 70s, so I'm not qualified to cast a vote for either decade.  Don't get me wrong, I consider the Beatles one of my favorite bands (just got the remastered versions of their entire catalog -- thanks PeteM) and I've spent countless hours listening and seeking out music of past generations (even Jim's).  But music is largely contextual, and many people quit seeking out new music once they hit a certain age -- whether by choice or obligation.

MTV had a huge influence on "Pop" music and where it is today.  I agree with a number of previous points -- Michael Jackson's "legacy" is a byproduct of his exposure on MTV, Hip-Hop owes a debt of gratitude for its emergence, etc.

The music industry is entirely different now (this is all from a listener's standpoint, mind you).  MTV no longer belongs in the musical forefront for a number of reasons, most notably -- they don't play music anymore (duh!), and when they do play music, it's overproduced, style-over-substance crap.  Think Nickelback.  Then again, maybe I'm just getting older.

That said, there is a TON of great music out there right now, and it's all easily accessible.  Sure, the internet phenomenon has, in a sense, brought on the death of the album, but there are a great many bands who still strive to put together something complete.  It may not be your cup of tea, but it's fresh, new and changing the face of music whether we like it or not.

So, in my experence -- 2000s > 1980s > 1990s.
And if I had to cast a vote, 1960s > 1980s > 1970s.

Fuck Jersey Shore.

I spend a lamentable amount of time in airport lounges. I'm in one now. Sitting in these places I overhear a lot of conversations, and conversations between male colleagues almost invariably drift to sports. Many times, most times, even, the people engaged in conversation are colleagues, they work for the same large company, work for complimentary companies, who knows what, but they are not close friends and as they sit and chat they get to know one another. Again, the conversations will almost inevitably drift to sports. I am astounded at how often people describe their sports loyalties. Well, I grew up in Pittsburgh so I like the Steelers and I live in Phoenix so I like the Cardinals and my son grew up in Kansas City and he likes the Chiefs so I like the Chiefs. You know, what the fuck? You like the color green? Hey, me too! Let's be Packers fans!

Fuck me, dude, pick a team. Hell, maybe that's my problem. If you root for half the fucking league you're bound to get a winner once in a while. The two behind me at the moment - Colts, Eagles, Steelers and Giants between them - are now hotly debating where Brett Favre is from (they have settled on Louisiana somewhere) and where he went to college (they have narrowed it down to Mississippi or Mississippi State).

My wife told me today that one of her patients holds the same venom for many of the teams that I do.  She mentioned Braves, Cubs, Yankees, Sooners, Jazz, Cowboys etc.  I figure, great, I always like to hear about rabid Astros fans, this guy's cool.

Three point five with incentives at best.  Myers has always underachieved as a player while excelling at being a fuckwad. Wade?!?!? Dammit! WTF!?!?

While I believe every human being deserves a second-chance to prove himself, I can't help but agree with everything you say here.  I want nothing to do with the guy, much less a reason to root for him.
Hampton/Ortiz were shots in the dark to improve the pitching staff also, but at least they didn't beat the ever-living shit out of their wives.  I just don't like it.

But he wasn't offered more $$$.

If he didn't interview for the job, was he technically offered any money?
Plus, in terms of College Football coaching jobs, yes I consider Lubbock to be better than Waco.  Having never been there, though, I can't speak to the quality of living.

And I think Briles is a good coach.  He's a great fit for Baylor.  I'd like to see Tubs at Tech.

If Briles is basing his coaching career and subsequent decisions based on what some dumb-fuck says on the airwaves /newspapers/talk radio stations/blogs/e-mails/text/tweets/Facebook/My Space, Tech is better off without him.
Every school has demons, but not every school offers the immediate opportunity to make more money and get out of Waco.

I'm with you, das.  I bought a sixer of the Shiner hefe a few years ago and spit out the first taste.  Tried it again with their pouring instructions, didn't like that either.  I finally got around to throwing away the four remaining bottles a month ago.  I kept thinking "emergency beer," but I realized I'd rather go without than drink that swill again.  Guess it's just not my cup o' brew.

You know what? I don't have all that much hatred for Bud Adams to tell you the truth. Once he moved my team to some backwater where high art is 1-4-5, a rhyming dictionary and a fake yodel and high fashion is an individually sized coonskin hat he got the fuck out of my life and out of my general consciousness. Also, his current bunch of clown and reprobates wearing the old uniforms has helped me considerably to get over becoming emotional, lachrymose, even, at the very sight of the old derrick.

And I know perfectly well that Titans fans have known and will know nothing but heartbreak.

Even with Dungy gone and some other guy standing on the sidelines (he never DOES anything... anybody notice that?) I can't summon up much beyond respect for the Colts. That is an offense the likes of which you rarely see. As much as I would like Mario to plant that molasses mouthed redneck in Reliant turf like a sago palm I can easily acknowledge that it is a privilege to watch him play football.

This.  All of it.

2763
Somebody has to be ranked higher -- that's the nature of college sports.  Yes, TCU has a very good football team.  I think a Top 5 ranking certainly indicates that.  But the same goes for Texas, and right now they're arguably playing better football than anyone in the country.
If the argument is that TCU would give UT a run for their money, then yes, I agree.  It would be a fun game to watch.  But Texas would win that matchup 7 times out of 10, maybe more.
Without a playoff system, the best you can do is watch both teams play and determine who's better.  Right now, that's Texas.

And yes, I'm biased.

Crazies are crazies.  It seemed like the bulk of this afternoon's reporting was "what was his motivation?"  Much hay was made on certain channels that he was a Muslim; others focused on the fact that he was terrified of being deployed to a war he didn't believe in.  The simple fact is that he has a lot more problems than any simple answer can provide.  His issues are a lot deeper than any single belief.  The man is crazy, and this was a horrible tragedy that has no greater meaning beyond itself.

I seem to recall Houston hospitals reporting a significant spike in births 9 months after Ike, though

We (my wife) gave birth at the tail end of the Ike Spike.  Nurses in the L&D sectors were going crazy trying to keep up with all of the new admissions.  We were told we were lucky to get a bed.
And, no, Ike had nothing to do with our, um, pregnancy.

Our baby boy decided he was ready for the world and arrived yesterday, June 29th at 8:17am.  Despite his early arrival (only 33 weeks) Benjamin Matthew Spalding came out crying and breathing on his own at 4 lbs 13 oz and 17 inches tall.  He's currently in the NICU at Texas Children's Hospital, but is progressing quickly and stirring up all sorts of trouble already.

I'm ecstatic to report that my wife and son are both healthy and happy and each of them will be home with the next two weeks.

Here's a link to a few early photos, please note that his left arm is being kept out of the blankets to speed up development.

But I'm enjoying Al Leiter and David Cone on YES tonight. They're talking a lot.

When I was living in Oregon several years ago we used to watch Mariners games just because it was Baseball On TV.  I can't remember the broadcast team at the time, but they employed a strategy that (to me) was revolutionary.  When they weren't talking about the game or something very closely related, they shut the fuck up.  I loved it.

I watch baseball because the game is entertaining.  I don't need/want two schlups in blazers trying to entertain me while I'm watching (JD and Brownie excluded, of course).

The best part about Bradley tossing the ball into the stands on out 2 was the way he caught it.  He jogged back, stood in his spot for awhile and caught it at his hip while facing away from the infield.  I was thinking, "that's not the way to set up with a man on...oh, wait...this is a good thing!"

Don't know if anybody's watching the Twins/FTC game right now, but Milton Bradley just caught out #2 and tossed it into the stands.  Men on 3rd and 1st both tag up to add a run to the Twins' lead.
Earlier in the game, Bradley ran on contact from 2nd base with 1 out on a grounder to SS, he was quickly tagged out (the Twins were conceding a run with men on 2nd/3rd, 1 out).
Bradley also misjudged a high popper to RF (the sun is brutal on that side of the field) for a single.

What's the 10th rule of Fight Club?

Easy, yes, but if your audience is a mixed group they might go over well.

Checked out the broadcast last night and thought Moberg did a really good job.  He was informative, somewhat funny and they sprinkled in a few Astros tidbits (World Series mention) to boot.  I'd take him over Do or Ray (can't remember which is the 'color' guy) any day.
Good job, Morgan!

Many many gracious thanks to everybody who has responded.

The great thing about this site (at least one of them) is that you can meet honest, funny and intelligent people all while talking about your favorite baseball team.  I first visited OWA a few years ago at the recommendation of a friend (thx AstascAstro), not really knowing what to expect.  This is what a social networking website should be like.  I don't give two shits what a high school acquaintance had for fucking dinner last night, but dammit if I missed a NYCU (and I do miss it now, everyday) or a WFW I'd be pissed.
So fuck Facebook, fuck the Cubs and fuck me I'm rambling.

Thanks again.

You're telling me that you don't find something interesting about the fact that those threads I started have something like 3 to 10 times as many reads as most of the threads in B&Q?   As usual, I take no responsibility and blame society at large.

If people would stop smoking the crack, I wouldn't have to keep selling it.

No, no.  I find the threads equally as fascinating as the next guy, and have read through each of them.  They're no "Palin, WTF?" (yet), but they've been a nice diversion from the current Astros team.  Keep em coming.

I apologize for interrupting your regularly-scheduled Alkie/NYC programming.

I know there are a few SnS IT professionals out there (can't remember exactly who) and I was hoping for a bit of advice.  Without going into too much detail, several factors (economy, impending fatherhood, self-loathing, etc) are forcing me to reevaluate my current career path.  I'm not looking for a job, just a push in the right direction.  Please send me a PM if you're available/willing to answer a few basic questions.

Thanks.

Time to drag this up.  The MM clan will be relocating within Houston, and I am taking this opportunity to make the jump to HD.

So...

1.  ATT U-Verse: looking at bundling TV, internet, and phone.  Anyone had any problems with it?

2.  Plasma vs. LCD.  What the hell?  I'm looking for a big fucking TV to watch from anywhere in the family room and kitchen.  Is one clearly better than the other?

3.  Any common problems in making the HD jump that I need to know about?

1.  I've had it for a month or so now, no problems whatsoever.  Heads and shoulders above Comcast.

2.  We went with a DLP a couple years ago, since you can get a bigger TV for the money.  Great picture, etc.  I've heard Plasma's don't last as long and LCDs are the best, but I very well could be wrong.

3.  The only problem I've had since making the HD jump is the inability to watch anything in Standard def.  It just doesn't compare.  You'll love it.

pravata was the Last Sane Man.  A man who wasn't distracted by hype or any matter of media prestidigitation.  He intrepidly fished through the oceans of dreck and brought us the most relevant and informative Astros news.  He brought us the news in a workmanlike, taciturn factor, without begging for accolades, without calling undue attention to himself.    No longer can we rely on pravata and Footer.  Now, we must do our own research, exercise our own judgment.  We suffer from those losses, but I am hopeful that we can follow in pravata's footsteps.  And, if the legend is true, when SnS is in its darkest hour, he will return to reclaim his position as Ferret-in-Chief.

Sadly I missed tonight's game, so I'm reading the GZ for the recap.  One question: After Puma got thrown out for arguing the call at the plate, why did Cooper get tossed?  Why the fuck wasn't Blum out there arguing instead?

I just "found" the album, and the second listen is as good as the first.  Like Ty, they tend to be growers for me, with YHF my favorite.

Unrelated note: the new Grizzly Bear is rediculously good.  St. Vincent's new album is pretty darn good too.

I streamed it a few days ago and really liked it at first listen.  Better than Sky Blue Sky imo.  I love the creative titles like Wilco (The Song).  Album art is great, too.

Filling out the lineup card incorrectly?  Just when you thought there was nothing left for Cooper to aspire to.

Hasn't he been doing this all along?

Not looking good. It's already started coming down at the stadium and that's a long fetch of rain to the south and west:

3"+ possible over the next 24 - 36 hours. Ugh.

StrosRays is right, NOAA/NWS is always your best public source...

Thanks, Das.  A buddy of mine is in Chicago, headed to Wrigley right now.  He's texting me to get updates.  A rainout would suck for him, especially since he planned the vacation around the Astros series and only has tickets for today's game.

That was exactly what went through my mind. But I think they're starting to shake that.

IIRC, yesterday's opposing pitcher (Hammel?) was a rookie RHP.  They scratched a few runs against him, although his defense was mostly to blame.
