You need FS-HOU to see the astros - it may come in the more basic package if you are in the territory, I don't know. I would just get the basic package and see if it works (you can easily add the sports package later).

I think this is correct.  If you're in Houston, you're fine with the basic package.  If you're in Rangers territory, you might be screwed.

Can I watch Astros games online if I live in Houston?  Is there some sort of blackout restriction?
The Texans are on CBS usually (I guess I'd lose a MNF game every week, which would suck), and I could watch Longhorn games at friends' houses - but as shitty as the Astros are (They're Still Shitty), I need to be able to watch baseball.  Any ideas?

Current rotation:

Daniel Rossen - Silent Hour/Golden Mile EP
He's the guitarist/vocalist/pianist/songwriter from Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles, and one of my favorite artists going right now.  This is his first solo EP and honestly the first thing that's captivated me this year.  Only five songs, but definitely worth a listen if you like his other bands.  Truly amazing guitarist.

Andrew Bird - Break it Yourself
Another personal favorite, this album is good but not his best.  Favorite tracks are "Near Death Experience Experience" and "Orpheus Looks Back."

White Rabbits - Milk Famous
They're kinda breaking out right now.  Their last album (It's Frightening) was produced by Spoon's Britt Daniels, and this one picks up where they left off.  Really good indie rock.

The Shins - Port of Morrow
First listen was pretty good.  It's just Mercer now (all other bandmates are replacements).

Jay Farrar, Jim James, etc - New Multitudes
Woody Guthrie tribute from ex-Uncle Tupelo, current (?) Son Volt singer Jay Farrar, My Morning Jacket's Jim James and a couple other guys I didn't bother to look up.  If you like Farrar's voice (I don't mind it in small doses), you'll like this.

A few more that are decent:
Julia Holter - Ekstasis
Dr. Dog - Be the Void
Lambchop - Mr. M

I flew United twice last week, each time I had my iPhone on (Airplane mode), earbuds in, playing music during takeoff and landing.  The flight attendant sitting in the jumpseat two feet away from me didn't say a peep.

Also, we didn't crash.

I had heard the main reason they want all devices powered down pre-takeoff was so that people would pay attention to the safety instructions.

My mom was a flight attendant for 35 years, she says they want things powered off for this very reason.

Honestly, for me it comes down to the AL move.  I'm fine with him leaving a last place team with a depleted (albeit getting better) farm system - he took some gambles to win NOW, and the team is paying for it.  Like HH said, I wish he'd listen to the baseball people more, but I won't begrudge the guy for wanting to be involved.
And I know Bud was adamant that the next Astros owner would have to concede to moving to the AL, but it seems like Drayton didn't even blink at the prospect.  He could've told Bud to fuck off, he didn't.  Few in Houston care about switching leagues - in fact the only outrage I've heard (or read) has been on this site.  That the majority of SnS opinions changed at that very instant doesn't surprise me at all.

ETA: Or, more succinctly, what chuck said.

There's a Yardhouse in CityCenter that boasts 200ish beers on tap. I went once (not my neck of town) and was a bit unimpressed.
Or he could just drive in to Petrol Station every day and live the good life.

Again, not my neck of town though, so I'm sure there are better options.

Went to the new one on Holcombe last night (had a coupon for a free burger).  Despite all of the negative reviews I read online, I was pretty pleased with the place.  The buns are baked fresh in store (somehow tied in with Three Brothers Bakery), and the rest of the ingredients are really fresh.  I was worried about a Counter-type burger (not a fan), but this had a good flavor and was much cheaper.  The jalapeno cream cheese was pretty damn good too.  Their milkshakes look amazing butI didn't try one.  The fries (both regular and sweet potato) were meh.

They've got a couple of shiny gadgets there, too - a hand-washing station that requires you to go in elbow-deep and a touch screen soda dispenser that claims to have 129 flavors.

It's no Lankford's or whatever, but it's a decent burger.
Anybody else been?

I've got a friend who got a Keurig and he loves it. Isn't that the thing with these prepackaged pucks of coffee? I wouldn't want to be tied to a single manufacturer and I really want to choose the beans I use.

That's the one.  For coffee aficianados, it may not be the best thing out there, but my office keeps several varieties in stock at all time, including tea and sweetened tea.  It's also hooked up to our water line somehow, so we never have to refill it.  It's super easy to use and accommodates all types of coffee drinkers.  There's even a modified cup thingy that you can use after you grind your own beans, but I've never tried it.

« on: February 23, 2012, 08:20:53 am »
If you're going to live in a civilized society, there are certain behaviors that should be observed when it comes to the coffee pot.

1.  When you arrive at the office, and the coffee has not been made, don't bitch and moan.  Make the coffee.

2.  When you do make coffee, just make it normal, according to the directions.  We understand that you may like yours weak, or strong, but don't use 1/4 of the bag for a pot, and don't use 4 bags just because you need a little extra jolt.

3.  The decaf pot is for decaf.  It's clearly marked.  Don't make decaf in the other pots, and don't make regular in the decaf pot.  Believe it or not, decaf is a big deal to some people.

4.  Finally, when you take the last cup, make a fresh pot.  Just because you left four coffee molecules in the pot doesn't mean you didn't empty the pot.

1. Buy a Keurig.

Follow this rule, and the world will be a better place for all of us.

FIFY, because I know you love it so much.

I guess there is some value to quanitifying it, but honestly, should this be news to any MLB organization, or any knowledgable fan for that matter?

If his input factors in to any personnel decisions the Astros make from here on out, I don't see how it's a bad thing.  But I guess that's where I stand on the whole scouts/geeks argument.  Why not have as much information as possible?  As long as you can weigh the scouting reports equally (or more) with the numbers, it's a win-win.

That Luhnow has hired so many stat-people so far doesn't surprise or bother me.  It's his background, and one of the reasons Crane likely brought him in.  But I don't see the stats side taking over all of the operations, either.  He's hired people to serve the function he served for the Jakes, and he probably has strong opinions of his peers in that regard.  This way he won't have to pour over the numbers himself anymore, he can just take what the stat-people give him and factor it into the evaluations.  More information, handled properly, is better.

Got a few to start the year off.

Kathleen Edwards - Voyageur
I guess it's kinda country, but I'd say it's more folky than anything else.  Also, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver is her boyfriend/producer, so I guess it's kinda serious.  She has a beautiful voice.

Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
Produced by Aaron Dessner from The National, features the guy from Beirut on one song and the girl from Wye Oak on another.   It's a dark, broody album and really, really good if you're in the right mood.

First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar
Swedish sister folk duo.  The title track is outstanding, but the rest just blends together.  Some great harmonies, but nothing else stood out to me.  Much like their first album.

Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
Seemed like paint-by-numbers indie music, but I've only heard it a time or two.

A quick Google search for NFL rules reveals:

The bigger question in my mind is why, when there was plenty of time on the clock, was TJ heaving it for the endzone instead of going for the short 1st down yards and then having options (IIRC, Kubiak called for deep passes on 3rd down before the 4th down INT).

Question on the Ed Reed INT towards the end of the game:
He intercepted the pass on the 4-ish yardline and then backpedaled into the endzone - why isn't this a safety?  Momentum?

I have to shave every workday, but I have a pretty good system.  I started the way my old man shaves, which is disposable, against the grain, soap instead of cream or gel, in the shower.  My father-in-law got me a fancy electric one for Christmas a few years ago and I've begrudgingly been using it because it's cheaper.  It doesn't shave as close though, so I start on Monday with a disposable razor, then switch to electric for the rest of the week.  That seems to find a happy medium.

Jayson Stark voted for Bagwell:
Not posting a link because I'm on my phone, but you can find the article at espn.com

Quote
- Jeff Bagwell: The best assessment of Bagwell's HOF credentials I've ever read just appeared on this site, from the ever-eloquent Schoenfield. But let me add: What we have here is a guy who has vehemently denied he used any illegal PED, and who didn't appear in the Mitchell report even though star witness Kirk Radomski worked for the Astros. What we also have here is a player whose Hall of Fame qualifications couldn't possibly be more clear-cut. How many first basemen are in the 400-homer, 200-steal club? Just one: Jeff Bagwell. How many first basemen have ever ripped off at least 12 straight seasons with an OPS-plus of 130 or better? Only two: Bagwell and Gehrig. Not to mention this fellow was a rookie of the year, an MVP, a Gold Glove winner and the Simba-esque leader on a team that went to the postseason six times. So why are so many people NOT voting for him again?

Now that the latest season of Dexter came to an (unsatisfactory) end, I am dumping my all movie channels as it is a lot of money for very little - and they're bundled so that it's really all or nothing if you want to save any meaningful cash.  In reviewing my choices, I discovered that:

Comcast offers XFinity, but not at my location
Comcast offers AnyRoom DVR, but not at my location
The above are subject to separate equipment upgrades that won't happen until some time in 2012...maybe
U-Verse can supply high-speed internet, up to 6mb/s down, but not TV service at my location
AT&T can't tell me if and when TV service will be available at my location

My zip code is 77098.  I'm not in the sticks here, people!  This is really, really ridiculous and annoying.

I hate them both.  I have to use one.  I cannot decide which one I want to tell to go fuck themselves more.

Apple doesn't have TV service yet?

Seriously, tell them both to go fuck themselves, then sign up for the cheapest one.  Nothing says "Go fuck yourself" like a 2-year service commitment.

My favorite was, "The key to the rest of the game is how well the Panthers play."  Or something of that ilk.
Oh, and Rivera challenging the spot on the first down for "momentum," not because, you know, it was a crucial first down to keep a late drive alive.

As for the Red Wings I will say that if I were forced to adopt a city's entire sports scene wholesale it would almost certainly be Detroit.

This intrigued me, so I've been trying to think of a city I could adopt for my secondary allegiances.
Personal history gets me Houston, Austin and Oregon - I've got Houston and the Horns covered, but Oregon?  I root for the Ducks and the um, the um...well the Ducks.  So Oregon's out (sorry OSF).

Kansas City was my initial choice because I really like the town, but I need an NL team.  Don't like the Eagles or 76ers, don't like the Heat, fucking hate the Braves and Jazz, so I'm left with:

San Francisco.  It's a cool town, the Giants don't bother me (hope they re-sign Kepp) and everybody hates the Cowboys.  I'll inform them of my decision.

Gasol may be soft, but he is a better player than Scola.  He's his equal offensively(20 ppg scorer), and is a much better defender.   I like Scola a lot too, but he is the one that plays no defense.    Gasol also has the size to play center in today's NBA which Scola doesn't.

I'll translate: Gasol is taller.

Talk Zone / Re: Pujols
« on: December 09, 2011, 01:27:10 pm »
Yes, there is that one.  The following year, Gar put Lidge in a similar situation the first opportunity he could.  Pujols came up to bat against Lidge in St Louis this time man on second, the game is tied.  Lidge gets one swinging strike on him (rather than intentionally walking him) and the next pitch Pujols lines a double to left and the game is over.  In the just completed World Series in the now classic game six, it was Pujols who basically had done nothing since the three homerun game up to bat.  He lined a sharp single to left to begin the faithful inning that eventually saw Friese hit a triple and shock the world (and Rangers).

Pujols is dangerous every at bat, but to me, he is most dangerous when the situation is intense.  Something about those situations that brings out the best (or worse depending on your view) of Pujols.  You don't have to get a hit every at bat to prove you're the best hitter in the league and perhaps the history of baseball.  Guy is very impressive and I doubt he'll change much in the AL, maybe get more chances to rest his feet as it were.  To me, that makes him even more dangerous a player (hitter), along the same vein of Harold Baines or Edgar Martinez.  Bpth those guys, if I am not mistaken, were playing (DHing) until they were over 40 years of age.

I'm ecstatic that Pujos is leaving our division, I'm just pissed he's coming to our division.

From BA:

Quote
However, the James speculation seemed to stop when word leaked that the Astros had hired Cardinals scouting director Jeff Luhnow as their new general manager. Luhnow had success with St. Louis' drafts, but he made his name with the Cardinals drafting more polished, role players—along the lines of World Series heroes Allen Craig or Lance Lynn—rather than high-risk, high-reward players such as James. It remains to be seen if the Luhnow hire would affect Houston's Rule 5 pick—for example, would the Astros pick a Cardinals player, such as righthander Francisco Samuel?—and Astros officials weren't commenting Thursday night.

Understood.  Would you change the BCS method, or would anything short of a true playoff type of system satisfy what you think would be a reasonable way to determine a national champion?

I'd love to see it changed, but I have no idea how to do it.  If you seeded the top 8 and used the upper-tier bowl sites to play those games, it seems like you could make it work.  But I don't like the idea of cheapening the regular season and, like you, I like bowl season.  I do like the idea that you have to win your conference to play in the NC, but that could come back to bite you just as easily (clear #2 loses Conf Champ game, only other conf champs have 2+ losses, etc).

Also, I think Bama is the second best team in the country, but I'd like to see another top team have a chance.

1710
Beer and Queso / Re: BCS
« on: December 05, 2011, 08:45:48 am »
I like the BCS just fine.  And no, I don't think it's inherently flawed.  It is what it is, which is a system designed to promote the big conferences.  I think people try to make it more than it is, as if it's some sort of panacea for determining definitively who's the No. 1 team.

Then maybe that's just it.  There is no other sport (that I can think of) that makes such a fuss about a "championship" game without providing exactly that.  Isn't the nature of sports to find out who's the best?  I'll watch my teams even when they're in last (and enjoy it, mostly), but I still want to see something that resembles a true and earned championship game.

If you strip the argument down, LSU proved it's better than Alabama by beating the Tide on their field.  You could argue OSU lost a more difficult game -overtime, missed FG, on the day of a University-wide travesty, to a decent team, on the road.

March Madness is a fantastic playoff system, but it rarely pits the "best" two teams against each other at the end.  Yet very few people complain about it once you get past the bubble teams that got the schneid.  In the end, the two teams proved, by winning, that they deserve to be there.

And for the record, I'm not arguing your points here, HH.  The BCS is working, I just disagree with its method and results.  Other than that it's perfect.

Beer and Queso / Re: BCS

The NCAA doesn't care, the BCS does. The NCAA has nothing to do with the BCS.

For the life of me, I can't determine whether you like the BCS or not.  I get that you prefer a Bowl system to a playoff system, and I think I understand the reasons for it.  But wouldn't you agree that the BCS is inherently and despicably flawed?

I have to share this story somewhere, and given the warm welcome so common here, I chose this venue.  Before I start, though, I should point out that I am happily married.  Not only that, but I reject all the crap about "window shopping" being OK or "look don't touch" or "it doesn't matter where I get my appetite as long as I eat at home."  That said, though, I am not blind.

So I'm headed in to work this morning and as I enter the U-Bahn station I notice that a fellow passenger 20 yards or so in front of me is doing an excellent job at filling out her skinny jeans.  Long blonde hair flowing down her back, covered by a short leather jacket completed the picture of youth & vitality (to say nothing of sexuality).  The train was crowded and as we entered the same car more or less together I took up my stance at the end of the compartment near the pole that everyone is supposed to hold on to.  She took the fold-down seat just to my left ... the last available "Sitzplatz".  As we both settled in, we made brief eye contact.

Remember -- happily married; no fantasies here, though I did smile slightly in a friendly way.  Then it happened.

She got a worried look on her face and said something to the effect of, "Would you like to sit down, sir?"

Arrgghhhhh  I really hate getting old.

That's fantastic!

I recognize the difference between single malts and blends.  If I had my way, I'd drink Laphroiag or Lagavulin every time I poured a glass.  Problem is, the pocketbook doesn't always lend itself to my preferred (and daily) tastes, so I'm left with the cheaper stuff more often than not.  I call it "Everyday Scotch."

I've been drinking Famous Grousse (and Black Grousse) mostly, because that's what my old man drinks and that's what I started with.  I found out tonight, much to my surprise, that Grousse is owned by Macallan, and what I drink regularly is the dregs of their barrels.  But Spec's was out of Black Grousse and I felt adventuresome.  Scottish Leader was what my liquor guy recommended, and I'm less than impressed.  So I turn to you:

What's a good cheap scotch?

Clark, I reject (personally) the dissatisfied customer approach to fandom. For me, Baseball is not a product, it is a tradition which is more than a little quasi-religious. The bullshit that the owners do is just part of the game. I really don't care at all, even a little, how much the owners make or loose. I want to see the Astros play--good or bad, NL or worse.  The money (very little actually)that I give to the Astros is paltry in comparison to the time and interest I give the local nine.

I am an Astros fan, I'm going to the games as long as we're both in Houston. Bud and Crane don't give a fuck about me, and I don't give a fuck about them. Plus, I'm expecting to sit in some great seats next season, maybe better than I paid for. It also probably helps that I am Catholic. We learn to put up with a lot of disappointment in the administration.

I agree with this almost 100%.  I'm still plenty pissed off, but I honestly don't know how to stop watching the games or following the team.  I want them to win regardless of situation - and I don't think boycotting any or all things Astros will help.  If anything, Crane will spend less because there is less to spend.

I get all the cynicism toward Crane, much of it is deserved, but I have to think he is going to try to put a winning product on the field as soon as possible.  Our past failures aren't his fault, but they are his problem, so it may take awhile.  I actually agree with his initial proposal to spend less until it's worth it.  Until Crane proves to me that he's in it to make the most money while doing the least amount of work, he's innocent.  Keeping Pam (in any form), didn't help his cause.

ETA: After a bit more consideration, I'll put it like this.  I don't mind Bob Dylan's electric stuff.  I like quite a bit of it.  Sure, I prefer his older acoustic albums, but it's still fucking Bob Dylan.  I'm sure if I was around when he made the switch I'd be wailing and gnashing teeth, too, but again - it's still fucking Bob Dylan.

I've never gotten the Drake appeal. He's trying to do emo Dirty South rap, and those two
modifiers are mutually exclusive.

He's Canadian, too, which makes the whole Dirty South rap thing even more difficult. But I like his sound and don't really know what Dirty South rap even is, so for me it works. It's a big downer of a record though - I guess that's the emo influence.

In other words, you and drew are wrong. You do like this album.

To be so cavalier in their actions toward a single team and fanbase, with the only reasoning for said actions being "he has to do it" tells me they could give two shits about me.

More confirmation.

Quote
HOUSTON -- Major League Baseball told Houston businessman Jim Crane it would not approve his purchase of the Houston Astros unless he agreed to move the team to the American League, The Associated Press has learned.

Crane was forced to agree to move the sale along, a person familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made by MLB or the Astros. Approval of the sale could be announced as early as Thursday at a meeting of baseball executives in Milwaukee.

Quote from: FYB Tweet
For 15/15 realignment, Houston would be the team moving to AL West. Would create more fairness in baseball ... 15 teams in each league would necessitate interleague play every day but it will be better schedule overall.

This isn't Crane.

To be clear, I don't hate them at all.  I don't wish them well, or wish them ill.  I just couldn't care less.

I am tempted to say me not caring about the Astros . . . How will anyone tell the difference?  Anyway, personally, I don't think any individual who absolutely does not care for the team should be allowed to write Series Previews for them, for example.  Even if, you know, his previews had very little to do with the Astros to begin with.  But I don't think I should be allowed to write them anymore.  Even though I would like to.  But I'm not a good judge of whether I should or shouldn't, though.

You know the crazy thing? Drayton chipped in $35mil of his own money towards Crane's $70mil discount to facilitate this travesty. Drayton ends his tenure as Astros owner, fittingly, looking like the ultimate Selig's Bitch. Pathetic.

100% agree.  Drayton wants out NOW, regardless of consequence.  And Crane wants in NOW, regardless of consequence.
Every single person who has a say in this decision is to blame, but for me, shit rolls uphill.  I'm trying hard to keep an open mind about the guy who'll own my favorite team for the foreseeable future, but he's not starting off on the right foot.

Saw a good one on Twitter a few days back.  Can you pinpoint a single, seemingly insignificant event that most shaped who you are today?

Mine was when I was 14 years old, entering my freshmen year in high school.  I had been an at-best decent football player and a fairly good drummer in jr high.  Im in the middle of trying out for a place in marching band when the instructor says that he saw I was registered on the football team and couldnt do both.  He asked me right then and there if I was going to play football or be on his drumline.  This in front of several other judges and my peers.  I wasnt even aware going into the room it was a problem.  I had never given it an ounce of consideration.  I said drums and that was that.

In retrospect, that little decision drove a tremendous amount of life experiences, thus who I came to be.  In my high school (as most, I would assume) the band and athletics groups couldnt have been more polar.  My circle of friends for the next four years was heavily dictated by that, which then drove where I worked, who I dated, where I went to school (UT), where I worked again, people I met, where I worked again, meeting my wife, having kids.  Bam! ~5 seconds as a 14 year old kid.

Somewhat similar situation for me.  Upon entering my HS as a freshman, I was mistakenly placed in the ROTC program.  I don't have anything against ROTC or its students, but that wasn't for me.

This was back when running to mommy generally garnered good results, so my mother called and called and called to get me switched out.  Finally someone answered the phone that could do something about it - the choir teacher.

I was never very athletic, so I didn't miss too much in that regard.  But four years in choir took me to Europe (twice) and I have strong friendships with many from those years.  All because the choir teacher answered the phone.

Another time I killed a hobo by the river, but that's a story for a different crowd.

Berkman. is. A. Cardinal.
see, I can write that without puking.
But this is only part true. Because you seem willfully blind to the part of it that isn't: go fuck yourself.
somehow I can loathe the cardinals and like Berkman.
for me some guys represent the character of their teams during certain periods: 5&7 during their era as an easy example. Likewise Chipper Jones is the Braves shithead number one in my mind--the anti-Berkman of his generation--and I despise him. But Lidge, Oswalt, Berkman--these guys are "Astros" wherever they happen to be playing. I don't ever watch them except when they play the Astros (or sometimes in the postseason), and I love it when the Astros beat them (like when Biggio got a homerun off Lidge). Though its a very long shot, if Berkman ends up in the Hall, I have no doubt that he would go in as an Astro.

What hat do you think he'd wear? Or you wouldn't even notice because he's just another turdinal? Frankly, shitting on Berkman is so pinwheel. you're better than that.

Right, somebody needs their Sarc-meter adjusted.  "He's a Cardinal" says nothing about his character or play on the field.  I'm sure he's a good guy, in fact I've never heard otherwise.  And he's one of the best Astros hitters of the last decade or so.

But right now -this very fucking second - he's a member of the World Series Champions St. Louis Cardinals. Until he becomes otherwise I hold the right to despise him as a player.

And please, I don't need any more reasons to go fuck myself.  Take a step away from the ledge.

I am obviously in the pro-Berkman camp but don't statements like this mean anything for those of you who have been shitting on him lately? I get not cheering him, not supporting him, and hoping he wears a big golden sombrero on days he plays against the Astros, but taking shots on his character is a little much. He's one of the best baseball players of his generation to come out of Texas, and one of the few in baseball that I have zero concern that he ever used PEDs. Also, I believe that he means what he says in that interview--his genuineness is one of the many thinks and make him a likeable player.

Repeat after me: He's. A. Cardinal.

I was trying to find things for each of my family members along the way but couldn't come up with anything for my mom. We were there in August, almost exactly when the Astros reached 15-30. Because my Mother never loses faith, I bought a $10 futures bet that the Astros would reach the World Series (I still don't know why I didn't bet them to win, it was equally ridiculous at that point) to give to her. Born and bred in Houston.  My dad was a Cardinals fan (he grew up in Missouri), and he's loved the game his whole life.  My mom traveled three or four days a week (flight attendant), so watching the game quickly became an every-night thing.  We'd catch a Rockets game here and there, but we rarely missed it when the Astros were on.

I fondly remember warm summer nights eating raw carrots, buttered toast and grilled chicken (dad isn't much of a cook), me with a glass of milk and dad with a bottle of Bud.  We'd talk about the game, talk about the players, talk about anything, really.

I remember towing dad's boat back from Trinity Bay on a hot summer day, freshly-filleted speckled trout in the cooler in the back - Milo on the radio.

I see the joy in my dad's eyes when he recounts the first game he took me to in the Dome, sitting on his shoulders and gasping the first time I saw the field.

I remember skipping a day of school in 1986 to catch Game 6 with a friend and his mom, getting home and finding out my parents bailed on work to do the same thing.

I remember Mike Scott's no-hitter, Craig Reynolds coming in to pitch in a blowout, Dickie Thon's left eye, Caminiti's rifle arm (Hidalgo's too), Biggio's uniform, Baggie's stance, Kent's walk-off, Bourn's wheels and 33 seasons of other memories.

To me, the Astros ARE baseball.  It's my game and they're my team.

Including this delightful paragraph: That was one of Garner’s most endearing qualities. His thought processes stretched in dozens of different directions, yet he could compartmentalize better than anyone. When the Astros were 15-30 to start the 2005 season, during our pregame media sessions, Garner mostly just grumbled about the oil and gas industry. He’d jumble names when talking about his own players, which paved the way for new, fresh pitchers such as Queeler (Chad Qualls and Dan Wheeler) and Nueve (Fernando Nieve). He’d give his mind a break from baseball by watching the Lifetime Movie Network in the hours leading up to game time (“Watch,” he said to us as we filed into his office before a game in Cincinnati. “They’re going to take her baby away.”)

That's fantastic.

Really loving the new Feist album, Metals.  I think I like it more than The Reminder, which says quite a lot for me.  The sound is pretty consistent throughout, with only one throwaway song ("A Commotion").
Standout tracks are "Uncovered First," "Graveyard," and "How Come You Never Go There."

Also listening to:

Beirut - The Rip Tide
AA Bondy - American Hearts
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Wolfroy Goes to Town

Tried the new M83, but I've never been a big fan.

It's funny, I went to Spec's a little before 10am to buy it.  I've actually never had a pumpkin-spice beer before, but I support St. Arnold's whenever I can.  I knew (through twitter) it was coming out today and my morning was wide-open, so I went.

Imagine my shock when I discovered a line that extended along the broadside of the building - all schmucks like me who wanted to get a hand on the Pumpkinator.  It was like that wedding dress bazaar they have in NYC or wherever, but instead of cheap, already-pregnant fiancees mauling each other for an overpriced strip of white fabric, it was a horde of overweight alcoholics waddling to the beer section at 10am.  I lapped a little old lady on the way, but I think she was there for Peppermint Schnapps.

But my point is this: I am neither shocked nor appalled by fan reactions in college sports nowadays, kids or not.... because the times we live in make it a blurred line of television exposure, kids holding press conferences (and exposing themselves to fan chatter on forums that lead to name calling and such), and coaches making decisions that are very business like.

I'll cut right to your point, then.  I'm not shocked either.  Doesn't mean I have to like it.  If a college athlete holds a press conference, "takes his talents" to a school, shows up in a limo at his first practice, etc, and continues to act without class, then he might deserve a classless response at his expense.  I won't be the one booing him, though.  I don't think this applies to Garret Gilbert.  Which is where we started.

I think it's much simpler than all of this (of course, I've never met Gilbert so I could be way off base).

He seems like a good kid.  He landed his dream position, failed, was publicly chastised by a significant portion of his fanbase, and decided to move on.  Throw all of the money and expectations out the window.  I feel bad for him, and I'm happy he's trying to revitalize his college career elsewhere.  He certainly doesn't need my pity, but I find it difficult to not put myself in his shoes and say, "Fuck, that sucks."

The QB of the Texans Longhorns football team in 2011 is a star position, a national celebrity. You are expected to lead the team to the national title every year or spit blood in the process of coming up short. Considering this, it strikes me as a bit funny that you guys are trying to act like he's just some kid givin' it his all-- like that's all he is. HE COULD BE A LEGEND! WE COULD BUILD A STATUE OF HIM! Oh, but he's just some kid playing for fun. How dare you talk about him in any other way?

Thing is, he won't be a legend, and they won't build a statue of him.  He didn't succeed, and everybody in the state of Texas knows that.  Which leaves us with this: he's just some kid who gave it his all.  Why is there something wrong with that?

I still feel for the kid.  I know, I know - he could've performed better.  No arguments here.  But he was poorly coached and stepping into some mighty big shoes (VY, Colt).  He was also highly touted and grew up a Longhorn fan - then booed on his home turf two years later.  And never bitched.

I'm happy the Horns are handing Ash the reins (with or without GG's injury), and I'm happy Gilbert is looking to redeem himself elsewhere.  I think he might need it more than we do.  Win-win, in my opinion.

ETA: But if he ends up a Sooner or Aggie, fuck him.

Hunter Pence rulz!!!!  Ed Wade sux and again proved it by trading my boy to the Phillies, a real team, for nothing.  How many times are the Phils going to hose us?

Who does this “Jim” guy think he is telling me to observe a pitcher’s motion, a batter’s swing, or a fielder’s footwork when ERA, batting average, and zone rating tell me all that I need to know?

Moving to the American League will be *awesome* because we can see the Sawks and Yanks every year, we get a natural rivalry with the Rangers, and, best of all, we finally get to dump bunting strategy for DH power!  It's not like the Astros have a history in the National League or anything.

Billy Spiers is not omnipotent.

I still consider myself one of the newer posters on this site, but I just checked and saw a registration date of April 2008 (not sure if that was the rollover date from OWA or my actual log-in date, but whatever).  Point is, if you keep your mouth shut and respect those who have vastly more knowledge about the team and the game, you'll be alright.  Sure, I changed my avatar to a horse's ass once - once - but I think it was MM who called me on my bullshit.

Not everybody's a VOR or LOE or any of the countless others who couldn't handle it.  Some are like me, so please, for the love of Billy Spiers, keep it closed.

Yeah, it's not high quality stuff, which is why it's so cheap.  If there's a piece of clothing that you wouldn't wear much that you do need for some reason (like a big parka for a trip or something), it's a good destination.

Sounds like a death knell to the NL as Crane and McLane have renegotiated down to cover the move to the AL.  Maybe there is some other reason for the lower price, but I can't even imagine one.

That's what I took from the article, too.  I hope I'm wrong.  History proves that is often the case.

Why are you people so thin skinned about this? The Astros are by far the worst team in baseball, they have a deplorable farm system and have highly questionable leadership. This is obvious to everyone else. Its being unpleasant to be reminded of does not make it any less true.

Just speaking out of my ass here, but I think the main reasons that pushed the Astros to the forefront of the AL switch (other than 6 teams in the NL Central/Nolan) are:

1) New owner who might be willing to move leagues, and
2) The Astros suck right now, so the perceived nationwide response would be, "meh, ok."

If the reports are true, and Crane is refusing to switch - even at the possible expense of his approval as the new owner, then I'm happy to have him here.  As long as he doesn't cave.

One thing that's often bewildered me about punk is how, despite the tough clothing and attitude, the music is often sing-a-longy, upbeat, distorted but not abraisive, 50's rock and roll-based stuff that's significantly more harmless than one would think at first glance. You look at The Clash's first album, even the title song of this thread, and even though the core message is aggressive and anarchic, the song has a catchy singalong chorus, and a very poppy G-F-C-D chord progression. It is this reason, I think, that I can't always get 'that feeling' when I listen to The Clash, even though I like the band-- it's neither aggressive enough or offbeat enough.

I couldn't agree more here, although I've always concluded that my disconnect with the music was entirely contextual.

Corpus Christi vs. San Antonio: Cosart vs Erlin.  Pretty cool.

I should have realized it earlier and got my ass down there.

Cosart's debut: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB.  73 pitches, 47 strikes.
Zeid took the loss though, 1.2 IP, 4 ER in relief.

I'm just looking at a box score though.  Hopefully somebody has an eyewitness account of the action.

I went to Cactus yesterday and bought the new Civil Wars, Steve Earle, Bon Iver, and Gillian Welch.  I was saving the Welch for last, after the Bon Iver, but so far the Civil Wars and the Bon Iver were spectacular and the Steve Earle was Steve Earle.

Nice haul NeilT!  I've been wondering about that Gillian Welch, curious of your thoughts on it.

Lately I've been listening to Neil Young's Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.  It's good to revisit the classics.

Good for Thunderpants.  I can't imagine what he's feeling right now - he's going from the (record-wise) worst team in all of MLB to a team with Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Utley, Howard and Rollins, to name only a few.  Should be thrilling.  Hope he does well there and I'll be cheering for him.  I wouldn't be if he ended up a Brave.

I think the time was right to dish him and it sounds like the Good Guys got a few nice pieces to speed up the building process.  Add the new guys to next year's 1st overall pick, Springer (assuming he signs) and the nice little crop in CC and it seems like things are moving int he right direction.

I'm a little sad to see Beeker go, if only because it's a stark reminder of how far we are from contending.  But I get it.

I blame it on social media.  It's become a race to "first" instead of a race of responsible reporting.

Your point is well made, but I'd argue the media was like that far before anyone put the word "social" in front.

*Maybe Ebby can explain the technical process.

What I usually see is this:  A week before pretrial hearings we start getting serious amounts of work.  Lots of video editing, graphics, exhibit treatments, etc.  Then, as motions get filed and granted, the product changes to accommodate the objections.  Sometimes it's days in advance, sometimes it's minutes before, sometimes it's right in the fucking middle.  Depends on the judge, mostly.

So for videos, by the time a clip gets played you'll have 1) the original, 2) first edits because it was too long, 3) second edits because it's still too long, 4) third edits because the lead attorney finally read the transcript, 5) fourth edits to exclude objectionable material and 6) fifth edits because it's still too long.  As a trial tech, you know this is going to happen, so you rename the old ones accordingly.  BENCH-01 becomes BENCH-OLD, then BENCH OLD2, etc.  That way you don't mistakenly call up the wrong clip but still maintain old edits in case you need them quickly.

More info than anybody cared to read, I know.  My guess?  Either 1) the lawyers forgot that was in the clip or 2) the video guy fucked up royally.  Option 1 gets a shitty reputation.  Option 2 gets you fired.

Beer and Queso / Re: Lesson: Don't televise murder trials

it sounds like the video support guy played the wrong clip. this happened to us recently in a lawsuit against Allergan (Botox). we dodged the mistrial consequence, which is the only reason our IT guy is alive today.

Yep, happens pretty often.  But it's just as common for lawyers to not include tech support people in any limine discussions or consider the ramifications of what's being played.  The majority of attorneys I work with never even glance at a video before it gets played.  Sure, somebody will always proofread the transcript, but juries pay attention to body language as much as what they're hearing.

Not defending the tech or chastising lawyers - they're ALL accountable.

I doubt it was intentional but it such a clear "you-absolutely-should-have-known-better-what-the-fuck-were-you-thinking?" screw up that it is difficult to explain.

It sounds like the objectionable part wasn't the video itself, it was the portion of the video that included a comment about Pettitte's wife and what she knows.  I deal with this stuff regularly as a trial consultant - I wouldn't put it past the prosecution to have never watched the video clip in its entirety.  Heck they may have even told the editor to cut that part out and he forgot (or ran an old clip).  Either way, somebody's getting an earful today.

On a nice little run of good albums lately:

The Joy Formidable - The Big Roar
Three-piece out of Wales with a sound that will kick your teeth in they rock so hard.  My Bloody Valentine meets early-Smashing Pumpkins, with a female vocalist.

Moonface - Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped
Another Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown) solo project.  I like pretty much everything he releases, so I'll say it's great and let you decide.

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo
Only a listen or two into it, but it's really solid.  Sleepy folk/rock.

tUnE-yArDs - W H O K I L L
Let's see....  Female singer who plays the tenor uke and loops her voice in strange and fascinating ways.  It's got a reggae/tribal/Bjorkish feel to it, whatever that means.  It's still really good.
