From the above list, Griffey's to me is a no doubt #1. What tha crap man?
Correa's will be on some future lists no doubt.
Carlos makes a point to not get in the middle of "walk off" celebrations, trying to protect himself.
(Found this NYT write up of 2017 Game 5 while looking for a video of him circling the pack after Bregman's winning hit.)

At this point you have to start wondering if White has compromising information on Luhnow.
It’s one thing to keep him on a roster with a healthy Altuve Springer and Correa, but with all the injuries they can’t afford to keep his massive dead wait afloat.
He tagged up on the fly ball. It’s a tag play at 1B.
Way to come to the rescue, Captain Hindsight!
Make sure the ball is thru the infield, *then* run.
I'm not sure that "they realized they rushed him to AAA." I can understand an argument that he could of, or should have spent more time in AA. In some ways, it makes sense, especially with hindsight. However, I also understand that in spring training, he was viewed as probably the top, can't miss pitcher in the minors, a probable #1 or #2. He also had a possibility, although outside, to stick with the club. It's hardly unusual to move guys like that up.
Anyways, there's always at least two sides to whether someone was rushed or not, and if he hadn't lost his mechanics, he probably would have been on the mound last night in MM. I think the question is why he lost his mechanics, was it competition or something someone like him was always likely to do.
This may be incredibly obvious, but the “ask Carlos about it” line leads me to believe that the club is more than slightly unhappy about it.

But talking heads told me they just are numbers to Luhnow!
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
How did he fracture his rib while at home on an off day?
The organization has built a great culture at AAA. Call ups are ready to play. Stubbs, Mayfield and Fisher contributing immediately. James and Valdez really performed in super high pressure pennant race.
Oh hey, Whitley is on the IL with “arm fatigue” and heading to Florida for rehab.

Really surprised were not looking at a regular infield of Yuli-Bregman-Kemp-Alvarez now.

Luhnow said the injury occurred at home and he was not at liberty to say how.
Given the phrasing I wonder if it was coitus related.

No word.

Correa out 3-4 weeks with a cracked rib.

Little known fact, Alvarez suffers from Gerontophobia.
Maddon on the absurd carry on balls hit in Houston's dome last two games:
“There’s definitely something going on. I’m not a conspiracy theorist – I am not. You can really gauge it on the balls up toward the ceiling, too. That one Bote caught literally almost hit the roof...
Whoever wants to admit to something or not; I don’t know if it’s a combination of the ball -- or maybe the techonlogiy of the bat has gotten better. Maybe it’s just purely about velocity. Or maybe there’s helium in this ballpark. But it’s friggin’ jumping, man.”
Thoughts??
I couldn't believe that the second Bote home run (off James) actually went out of the park. It looked like a harmless fly ball off the bat.
Tags tweet: A.J. Hinch said the Astros received “encouraging” news about Jose Altuve. Altuve will need some time to “strengthen his lower half.” Nothing new on Correa.
I'd love to see it but odds are we're about 6 weeks away from that being an option
Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
The real question is if you send him down, who comes up and who takes his starts. James or Rodgers are potential options to start. As far the bullpen spot, Reymin Guduan again? Was going to say Deetz but his numbers are terrible, other than K's. Seems like everyone in Round Rock is pitching like shit
Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
That is more accurate, but I wonder if some of that is a bit of fear. To me, he just has the look of someone wary of keeping pitches in the zone.
After start # 2 McTaggart had the note that Martin had thrown fastball at a 55% rate. League average 35%.
I suspect that speaks more to his inability to use his other pitches (or lack of confidence) rather than to the strength of his fastball.
Hinch didn’t seem pleased with his lack of aggressiveness.
Correa is awfully fragile.
I thought jack should have bunted. Everyone was playing back.
Back to back 2-strike home runs...2-1 Cubs
Way to ask for trouble.
While "doing some things" and "getting treatment" at his house today he felt something in his ribs, per Hinch
AJ had him in tonight and had to redo the lineup card.
I hope it's not before Friday: we're going to Thursday's Express game, and I'd like to see him in person.
Shit’s on fire, yo.

I would disagree with the last part. Yes not all appearances are created equal but AJ does a great job of spreading out the workload
Osuna 24 games 24⅓ innings
Pressly 22 games 24⅓ innings
Harris 20 games 18 innings
Rondon 20 games 18 innings
James 19 games 27⅔ innings
Devo 18 games 19⅔ innings

This is going to (continue to) chew the hell out of their bullpen. They basically have no other way to win right now but to get good starting pitching and squeeze out a few dinks and dunks and maybe a solo homer or two from what's left of their offense. That's save situations and other high leverage innings for their bullpen, night after night. Pressley and Osuna are already feeling the strain...
I can't even imagine the emotional rollercoaster that guy has been on. "Hey pack your bags, we need you in the show"
"Hey sorry bud, turns out were not gonna need you. Here's your ticket back to Round Rock"
"Alright man, we're serious this time, look Diaz is already on the IL"
Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
This seems like as good a time as any to mention that the last time I took luncheon with Hudson he wore an Astros baseball cap. Which he left on during the meal.
I caught AJ today during his weekly radio spot with Mike Ferrin and Jim Duquette. The subject of Alvarez was again brought up, as it has been almost weekly in this spot. I’m paraphrasing, but AJ said he understands the questions about him. Said he gets asked about Alvarez as much as he does Bregman. He basically said a call up was close and seemed to allude that he was seriously considered a few days ago, but that the timing wasn’t right because when they looked at the upcoming schedule they saw 5 straight lefties going against us. He did act however like a call up was coming sooner rather than later. I know that will make us all happy as we are anxious to get a look see at this level. I’m suspecting, as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, that they are now waiting until after that June 1 deadline. Regardless, AJ acted like it won’t be long.
One side note, he said they had Mayfield ready to call up for Boston series when Diaz was hurt the first time. He had been told to pack his bags that he was going to Boston and was going to get his first start in Fenway against Sale. Last minute Diaz decided he could play so it was all shelved. He was excited for Super Jack and glad it worked out the way it did (though I’m sure he didn’t want Diaz hurt again).

I have probably eight or ten. I have several Stetson felts, and a Canadian made Biltmore that I love. I have one fabulous silver belly, custom made from some hatter in Oregon. It was custom made for someone else, who didn't like it, so I got it for a song...like $200. I have two Stetson straws, a Dobbs Milan-weave straw, and two Panamas, hand woven in Ecuador (as all Panama hats should be) that have no brand, obviously. Been wanting an Akubra, just haven't, for whatever reason. I have an old Stetson straw cowboy hat for wearing around the old place, working on the tractor, etc.
My nephew is a huge Cubs fan. During the 2003 playoffs, he flew from MS to attend a Cubs-Marlins game in Miami. We experienced the impact of Cubs fans at the game.
Late in the game, with the Marlins ahead, a rumble started down the LF line: "Boom! Boom! Boom!" By the time it reached us, we could hear it - and feel it: "Let's go, Cubs!" It went on forever, and circled the stadium. Quite a surprise, in enemy territory! On script, the Cubbies rallied and won the game.
The range of WGN (720 AM) has produced a host of Cubs fans around the country over the years. When they aren't playing the Astros, I pull for them.
Isn't it fun to see growing numbers of Astros fans in enemy territory.
I started to worry then I remembered that on Osuna's two worst outings as an Astro, the team won both game.
His velocity seemed normal, so I think he was just missing his spots today, and he paid the price.
I really believe Fisher can play successfully at the MLB level if given a chance. I hope they can include him in a deal for a pitcher.
Combined with Saturday, he’s been hit awfully hard.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
So when do we start worrying about Osuna?

I know. A nice problem to have. I hope Mayfield and Fisher make Luhnow’s decision REALLY difficult.

Sad.
Condolences to his family. Dementia at advanced age is heartbreaking. Dementia at earlier ages all the more so.
So when Altuve is activated, who goes down? Fisher?? I don’t see them going back to 12 pitchers. If you don’t DFA or trade White or Kemp, then Mayfield or Fisher have to go.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Surely Bregs can handle 2nd. If we ever need to play Yuli/Bregs at 3rd/2nd again, please put Yuli at 3rd.
I really hope the Yuli at 2B experiment is over

The poppies on the uniforms are a nice touch. I like better than gaudy alternative uniforms.
Astros lineup looking rough today.
I'm glad they're doing this, because I imagine that he'll have to go back to Round Rock when Altuve gets activated.
Diaz to the DL, Jack Mayfield called up
Boston's fundamentals are awful - looks like they all missed spring training. Their poor fielding and base running have handed the Astros the first two games of the series.
It’s not about talent. The guy from last year dominates AAA, just as he did AA.
Diaz' scoring slide at home was phenomenally athletic.

Left hammy.
Hinch says it doesn’t look good for Springer, IL likely.

Alvarez is in a mini-slump, 1 for his last 17 after tonight's game.
You know, for your 8th and 9th inning guy to give up HRs and still win I think it's great. Unfortunately they were going to give up a run sooner or later. They gave it up and still won. I'm ready for a new streak to start tomorrow.
Osuna had 18 straight scoreless outings prior to that.

Altuve's going on a rehab assignment of undetermined length, but it shouldn't be too long. Tucker/Straw/Fisher are all on the 40, Yordan is not.
God dammit! Cocksucker!
Agreed, but he didn't look real comfortable with his back earlier tonight, either. He spent a fair amount of time in the outfield bending over and trying to stretch it out.
Springer needs to go on the IL and get COMPLETELY well. Call up Alvarez and see what he can do.
This really sucks for George. He took himself out too so it must really not feel good.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That was all undeservedly beneficial to the Astros
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
He’s always had good stuff, but he’s had problems throwing strikes. I think he was the worst in the league last year at it. But he seems to have corrected that this year. He was a zone pounding machine last night. And the Astros laid off of a lot of really hittable pitches.
I keep hoping that he's "working on things" at the direction of the pitching staff and is being told to not worry about the on-the-field results. I think I'm whistling past the graveyard though as I've not seen that at the AAA level before...
Round Rock is averaging about 8,600 people/game. The Marlins are averaging about 9,800/game.
I'd take the Express over the Marlins right now in a best of 3 series.
He also was arguing that the manager change wasn't the catalyst for the improvement. He was saying it was a bench clearing brawl about a month later. She said "wrong".
Just joking. Hotels are one of the things we're not allowed to discuss in the Game Zone.
As I understand it you saw the best Urquidy has to offer. His usual self will typically end up with a line more like what Rodgers would have. Duman's link to the report I think nails down the general consensus. This is a broken record from me but Luhnow wants the Mexican market so I expect that for any pitcher like him Urquidy will be at the top of the promotion list.
I too have thought Mayfield could be a good mlb utility player and thought he would have been picked up in the Rule 5 draft last year. Perhaps this winter he will be if he's not dealt this summer.
Not always easy to have certainty, especially with the tandems.. When I went last week, I followed the prior weeks tandem scheduling. Based on that progression, it would have been Whitley's tandem turn, but they used Urquidez in his debut, and pushed the Whitley tandem back a day.
And tonight, Milb has Sneed listed as a starter. Well, he has been used in Tandem with Whitley, but Sneed started last tandem and only went 1.2, so if he is starting tonight, is he still in a tandem with Whitley (they usually alternate starting)? I am going to assume that Whitley and Sneed are no longer in tandem and that Jim is correct that Whitley is going Thursday.
Anyways, you get the point. If they would just keep their gamenotes up to date (they are presently three days behind), it would be easier.
My son was actually wondering if Mayfield would get a shot if DIaz had gone on theDLIL. He is a very useful utility guy.
Here is a scouting report on Jose Hernandez-Urquidy
I’m curious, where do you get this info? I used to get this from the game notes in the media section at their website, but they are a few days behind. I’m trying to find out when Whitley is slated to throw.
Chandler Rome tweet:
Collin McHugh is going on the 10-day injured list with right elbow discomfort. The Astros recalled Brady Rodgers

The good news is that if White continues to suck, maybe he clears waivers.
Because really. How many teams are really looking for a 28.5 year old, light-hitting, overweight, defensive liability?
Also what a great problem to have. We're only worried about what happens to players 24 and 25 on the roster.
I’m beginning to think more and more that Alvarez, barring injury, doesn’t debut until September or 2020. If they go to 13 pitchers, hard to see where he fits in and gets adequate playing time. I’d rather have him playing in AAA than call him up to get one or two starts and 6-8 at bats in a week.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Neither Alvarez not Tucker will be called up any time soon so that problem doesn't exist right now. The first problem is what move does Luhnow make when Altuve returns from the IL. It does not appear likely that Martin will be sent back down. Does he go with 13 pitchers or 13 position players?
I think this overstates his value. He’s valuable, but there are other guys who can do what he does.
Would Luhnow move Kemp for less than a top prospect? I think that Kemp’s versatility, speed and clubhouse presence make him someone the Astros need to keep unless the offer is too good to pass up.
They'd have to add Alvarez to the 40 man and still have to do something with White (or Kemp).
If they wound up with a starter and moved Peacock to the pen, this bullpen would be outstanding.
Kemp played 2B at Vandy, he's better for the position than Gurriel
Kemp was not going to PH for Jake, no matter what.
This game has been teetering on the edge since the first pitch.
I can't wait for the team to leave this shit-hole.
Let's sweep these piss-ants tomorrow.
I have busted Harris' balls in the past but has been nails this year.
That was not a strike.
His second AB tonight with the bases loaded.
First one was a weak grounder.
Then that shallow fly.
I don't think Jeff Nelson's mom would be impressed with his zone tonight.
Who is "we" white man?
I hope he keeps killing it and is the centerpiece for a playoff starter.
I cant remember a single person on this board against a JV trade- quite the contrary in fact. I remember lots of folks pissed that Lunhow didn't pull it of at the non-waiver deadline. Also, JV didn't fall off a 4 wheeler and suffer a type II AC sprain.
Bumgarner's last three starts (LAD, @COL, CIN): 18.0 IP,20 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 23 K, 3 BB.
I was hoping that we would finish with the Red Sox before Betts found his stride, but it doesn't look like that was meant to be.
Good win! Osuna wasn’t exactly sharp against Betts, but he got the out.

Teams wearing their Memorial Day gear. Thought maybe I was missing it.
Bumgarner is not the same pitcher since his injury.
My bad!
There was some thread somewhere in which I implied that from something you might have said or I misinterpreted where I got that vibe.
Alvarez is obviously the hot ticket right now but a year ago (or was it more?) Tucker was “cant miss” for all of us. I hope someone pans out. Can’t have too much outfield depth.
Or... is Luhnow’s plan to make Alvarez the spot OF but mainly DH/1B and Tucker the corner OF for the future. Maybe we might all be too hung up on Kemp let alone White.
Tucker's first 12 games: 4-42, .095 /.174 /.190 /.364
Since then: .303 /.380 /.719 /1.099
I'd think about for Stroman. There aren't that many really good pitchers on bad teams with moveable contracts or enough club control for me to fully justify it.

I would not. Nor would I trade Tucker for Bumgarner
Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
For the sake of argument, imagine that the Giants insisted on Alvarez in exchange for Bumgarner. Would you do that trade?
Not necessarily. The Astros have three good outfielders through 2020. They could use another starting pitcher. You can think Tucker has great value but think the team is best served by converting that to value at another position.
I've seen many people, including yourself, saying to trade him. Is that not writing him off?
Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
I know many here have written off Tucker because as a 21 year old he struggled to hit big league pitching. I still have faith that Tucker will be a good major leaguer
Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
And that’s why I think he’ll be given every chance. If Luhnow is willing to trade him, all these GM’s trying to emulate JL will be apprehensive.
If Luhnow has given up on Tucker fine. We’ll see if he has a good poker face then. Personally I’m torn. But if JimR has a source that implies the work ethic/attitude is an issue then bring on the Texas holdem’!
I suspect Luhnow still envisions Tucker in the Astros' corner outfield for years to come. And I'm okay with that.
I figure Astros won't try to re-up Jake because of Straw.
As a trade piece or as a fix to the upcoming Springer/Brantly/Reddick/Marisnick FA wave?
Tweet from Astros future today

Me too Jim.
Let me ask this question. Assuming Bumgarner throws good up to the deadline and he looks like the guy you want, SF from what I hear on radio wants to get younger and wants outfielders badly. Would you do Tucker for Bumgarner straight up even though Bumgarner is a rental?
I think I would....

Other good stuff in this piece, too.
Tonight Alvarez has 2 home runs and a double, 3 runs scored and 6 RBIs.
He said as much 2 weeks ago.
Suspect he feels the same now.
Bregman spiked that one. Shame the 1B couldn't pick it.
Bases loaded with no outs and all of that butchery, and we only get one run. Oh, well.
"Houston Astros fans couldn’t care less where Waldo is."
Story of my life.
Yeah, it would be a huge bonus if Alvarez' skills translate to the MLB. In my limited views, he appears to be more professional in his approach: works counts, uses all fields whereas Tucker seems more to be a hack at everything hitter with a very pull oriented swing.
I personally, in my very brief pitching career, found it much easier to focus on the catcher's mitt during my windup/motion than looking anywhere else.
The only time that wasn't true was being a lefty pitcher with a runner on first. In those cases, even I didn't know if I was going to throw to 1st or home when I started my pitching motion.
Apparently it caused some problems with base runners.
Slow your roll, old man.
There is still at least a little bit of skill involved in being a good first baseman.
Exactly ... He is not going to get any better at 1B, but he might get better in LF with more time there. Thus the AAA duty in LF.
I've been told it's more about the shoulders, and keeping them in the same plane. Just helps with release point. But I was never a pitcher so I don't know how much that's a factor. I can recognize some of the common mechanical mistakes like overstriding or dropping the elbow pretty quickly, but like Tim McCarver, the biggest thing I know about pitching is it's hard to hit. I agree that repeating your motion is probably the biggest factor.
Thanks for the insight, Jim. I'll buy ya a beer in RR if we're ever there at the same time.
Diaz!
I find it interesting that the write up I read on Alvarez said practically all scouts see him as a first baseman except the Astros, who seem intent on make him an outfielder. I’m glad they are still playing him some at first base because to me that seems like his quickest path to the show. And I’ve given up hope on AJ Reed. If you jettison White you could call him up tonight and he could get all of Tyler’s playing time. That would be enough AB’s to see what he really looks like. The AB’s in the outfield are going to be tougher to come by with Jake and Kemp there.

How does Alvarez look at 1B?
Man, who were the pitchers responsible for that mess?
No doubt he keeps up with OWA. How else can you explain the team's turnaround?
Luhnow is in attendance apparently. Good time for a chat.
Always liked Marwin except his plodding around between pitches. I hope him the best except when facing the good guys.
To me defense is where Marwin separates himself from Diaz so far. Diaz made a great play to his right at 2nd last night, but he doesn't look comfortable in the outfield. He doesn't show to have Marwin's arm strength at SS or outfield either.
I haven't seen any indication that the Astros made Marwin an offer. Although, I have no doubt that if Marwin asked to stay (for a reasonable amount) the Astros would have made that offer in a heartbeat. The Stros signing Diaz early to me indicates that Marwin made it clear he wanted to test the market.
After his kind of rocky start, I like what we're seeing out of Diaz now. But I'm not sure he'll ever get on top of a Kenley Jansen fastball and drive it out of the park when his team needs it the most.
Robbing Goodrum twice was an indirect payback for Goodrum kneeing George's buddy Marwin in the head a couple of days ago.
The simplified motion means...well, less motion, especially in the shoulders and head. It keeps them on the same plane throughout the windup, and helps the pitcher focus on the target. It's also easier to repeat a simple motion, which in turn helps with command. I don't know if the Astros teach it specifically or if it's an individual thing for each pitcher. My guess is it's the latter, and if a pitcher is having trouble with command, simplifying his windup motion is one of the first things to try and help.
I compartmentalize. I like a few players on other teams. I want their teams to lose when they play the Astros but otherwise enjoy seeing them succeed as long as it's not at the Astros expense. There are guys on other teams that I also hate and hope they never become Astros. Sometimes, as in the cases of Carlos Gomez's and Roger Clemen's times as Astros, I'm conflicted by wanting someone I dislike to do well. That said no one misses "The King" more than I do. Also, how do you know it's unrequited?
There was no MLB player with the first name of Corbin for 115 years.
Now RHPs named Corbin have made debuts in consecutive years.
Corbin Burnes appeared in 30 games for Milwaukee last year (7-0, 2.61 ERA).
There have been 3 players with the last name of Corbin: Archie, Patrick, and Ray.
This thread may not be up your alley.
Did the Astros ever make an offer for him to turn down? I don’t remember one being reported. They traded for Diaz very early last offseason to replace him, so I guess it is possible he didn’t engage in discussions and the team quickly moved on. But I do not remember anything like that being reported.
I agree.
But it sure is nice that he's having clear issues at the plate and still producing as one of the top 10 players in the league.
Marwin has a 6 game hitting streak and is batting .357 in May.
Just my two curiosities from watching Martin on Sunday:
1. He works from the stretch. Is this an after effect of starting out as a reliever?
2. Damn, he works fast. Fun to watch.
Yesterday's performance notwithstanding, and his overall numbers notwithstanding, and with nothing else at all standing, Bregman's swing still looks a little funny to me. Getting under all these hittable lower pitches and flipping them up.
Sometimes I wonder if Devo thinks his 95 mph straight as a string fastball is his best pitch.
If I could replace the entire television marketing department at Minute Maid, I would happily. As an Astros fan, they have made me watch so many hours of terrible programming, and time is too precious.

How did the Asttos lose any games to the Rangers?
Hitters typically don't see the change from the off hand very well, it's hard to recognize. It's very effective, especially when you can command it in fastball counts.
So far so good for Corbin. The interviews with his mom and grandma made me tear up.
He swung at one at least three inches inside, too.
MLB.com has him listed as the starter on Sunday. He's only got 24.1 innings at AAA, although he's pitched well, and the RR website doesn't even have him on the 40 man roster.
Does anyone have more detail or perhaps have seen him pitch? Presumably he takes Altuve's place on the 40 and 25 man roster and the team goes forward with 13 pitchers, but does this mean McHugh is back to the pen?
Radio team notes 10 of 11 runs scored with 2 outs.
Damn, T'pants can still hit. In spite of a swing that looks like a cross between Chi Chi Rodriguez and Mel Ott.
Jim, I know how no trade lists work and that he can change his mind any time. I just thought the Braves being on there was curious. I realize now why they are on there. Thanks for your input though.

Is he primarily a sinker-baller? A lot of ground-outs?
From @Chandler_Rome:
Collin McHugh is going to the bullpen. The Astros are expected to recall Corbin Martin to make his major league debut tomorrow against the Rangers.
A.J. Hinch is “not optimistic” that Jose Altuve will avoid the injured list. He described the injury as a “slight strain” of his left hamstring.
He was limited to 8 I believe so some contenders would have to be left off.
I recall that Altuve had recommended Chirinos to Luhnow. Described him as a high-character guy.
Curious that the Braves are on his no trade list. He grew up in North Carolina. They are geographically closest to home and you would think he grew up watching them.

Luhnow in April:
"I don't think we quite had the defense rated as well as its played in the big leagues. That was an underassessment on our part."
"We had a feeling (Laureano) was going to be a pretty good big league player, but he's gotten off to a faster start in his career than we thought. So, yeah, he's one that I'd love to have back."
"We just didn't feel he was going to be as good a center fielder as Jake (Marisnick) or as Myles (Straw) and some of the other guys we have. He certainly has proven to be every bit the player."

Everyone can look up Keuchel's numbers and construct solid arguments about how good or not good he was.
His 1st inning ERA was 6.88. In 34 games he gave up 3 first inning homers and 11 doubles.
He did make it to the 5th in 32 of 34 starts and to the 8th in 2.
ERA in other innings stayed low until the 5th, 6th, and 7th.
It was a weird, uneven year with weird uneven games. He didn't suck, he wasn't great, but he was rarely mediocre.
Personally I found it exhausting but I appreciated his durability. And god help him if the hpu wasn't going to give him low strikes.
Only if that is what you want it to be.
Over his last 20 starts he was 9-3, 3.25
3 or 4 really bad starts skewed his final numbers

He had a bad start but ended up having a very good year.
But yes, so far Miley is another inspired roster move by Luhnow.
"If" was not included in the sentence.
The freeze-frame they showed was after Springer was on the bag. He got his hand in before the tag, I thought.
Also, what a shitty at bat by Bregman with a chance to do some damage. Just flailing at everything.
I'm sure you are referring to my post and let me clarify something. I never questioned the organization's talent evaluation abilities. I complimented it. The rest of your post I agree with in retrospect and in reading some of the board's comments.
I don't think anyone is disputing that Laureano could fill a similar role, it's just responding to the original comment that the Astros somehow missed the boat on him and it calls into question their ability to judge talent. He's got value, but he's not the kind of player who pushes people out of his way, and he simply wasn't an upgrade.
Looking at the video this morning it looks to me like his mechanics are really fucked up. He's throwing nearly sidearm and his breaking stuff is flat if it moves at all.
Insightful. Never said that's what I'd want, but *if* they had chosen to keep Laureano, the 4/5 OFer, all-world glove, suspect bat with some pop, PR role would seem to make the most sense. They're very similar players.
I don't understand how an organization as astute at evaluating talent let Laureano get away.
The difference is that McDonald's doesn't rely directly on it's employees to make money for the company and the employee is easily replaceable with anybody off the street. That's not the case here, the players are the product. Nobody goes to McDonald's for the employees and nobody goes to the ballpark for the owners.
That's why the players deserve half the profits. No players, no game, no money. If McDonald's or walmart or companies like them lose all of their employees tomorrow they can replace them within a week and be just fine.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. In what reality in this capitalist market is there a direct correlation between entity profitability and employee wages? When owners (shareholders, private owners, franchisers, etc...) go through profitable periods, employees get paid what the market will bear. When those owners sustain losses, employees still get paid what the market will bear until the thing becomes insolvent. I’m not sure it’s a reasonable expectation that owners equally share profits but bear all the risk for the ebb and flow of profitability. I guess an analog would be a franchise like McDonalds. They are rapidly moving towards a living wage for employees but that has nothing to do with profit sharing. It’s all about customer pressures in response to socioeconomic mindset shifts.
Interesting to think through.
Maybe I missed something, but I think the only Astros offers I've read about were in the $18mm AAV range, like the 2016 offer, a similar standing offer prior to this past offseason, and then the $17.9mm QO.
It’s just hard to find. Easier to ask Google than to find it on the front page.
http://www.orangewhoopass.com/2008/03/06/funk-wagner-the-talkzone-glossary/
Losing that glossary and all the history tied to it was a real blow.
Maybe he just had a bad month.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Astros' going out and getting a guy like Brantley at a position that Tucker likely viewed as "his" put him in a funk. He's just got to realize that at some point this season there will probably be an injury or something that opens a spot, and it's his job to be ready if that happens.
Luhnow was born and raised in Mexico.
Luhnow speaks fondly of it. BTW, there is rain possible both Sat. and Sun. in Monterrey.
It's almost like he starts slow every year or something...
The least 2 seasons it was simply called August.
Mctaggart said a James had a sore back yesterday.
Top of the 9th, May pitching:
Reddick out to right field.
Diaz Ks swinging.
Chirinos HBP on a full count.
Kemp grounds out 1-3.
Final: 8-2 Twins
The Travelling Horseshit Show is in full revival.
My argument would be, "What's the rush?"
White, Kemp, Diaz & Guerriel have all struggled to this point in the season, but a month is all we have played. No reason to think any of them can't turn it around.
I realize Kemp & Diaz are more valuable because of their ability to play multiple positions but White posted a line of: .276/.354/.533 in 66 games (210 ABs) last season. It is only one game, but we are leading the division, and done so even though it has been against a fairly tough schedule (as others have posted). So I'm thinking there is no reason to change anything, yet. Let Alvarez get more PT in the OF and let White get a few more ABs to turn things around. If he's still shitting the bed in 3 or 4 weeks then I'll agree with you.
One of the things I love about the Astros organization is they tend to play the long game with players. Sometimes you'll get burned doing this but overall I think it pays dividends as players know they will be backed (to a certain point) and are given fair shots to succeed or fail.
Why would anyone trade a good pitcher at this point in the season?
Autocorrect for Stroman. Too funny!
Not sure if autocorrect or on purpose, but I'm a fan.
Kluber took a 102 mph liner to the forearm; fractured ulna.
That sounds right
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't think you took away what you needed to take away from attacking first pitches.
It's one thing to attack first pitches aggressively. But when you're lazily swinging over and under 91 MPH fastballs in the lower middle of the zone, there is something overridingly wrong with your approach, no matter when in the count they're happening. Not punishing shit fastballs is bad baseball, period.
The Astros looked straight up disinterested in hitting the baseball last night with only a few notable exceptions.
He certainly left millions on the table not accepting the deals he was supposed to have been offered.
Keuchel always seemed to get along well with teammates. No reason for them to not warmly welcome a previous Cy Young, left-handed innings eater to help the club! As far as Luhnow, everyone likes a bargain right?
I know he's been throwing simulated games every 5 days, but after not facing MLB hitters, could he jump straight into the rotation? Effectively?
Or sign a free agent cy young award winner who pitched 200 innings last year and finished in the top 10 in quality starts.
Whitley gave up something like 4 runs in 3 innings tonight
Radio speculation is Osuna not available, Pressly preferably won't see action nor Harris.
So Framber needs to be effective.
I'm guessing their plan for Whitley directly impacts both their price point for another pitcher and their plans for Peacock.
Does anyone think that any combo of White/Kemp/Marisnick is going to fetch a starter?
If you want a starter aren't you going to have to give up something valuable from the farm? Or an actual proven every day player on the current 25 man roster (i e. Reddick; not endorsing this)?
He has, but he's not been all that good outside of low leverage appearances. If you add Peacock and a guy and push him down the pecking order he's a great guy to have. Same with Harris, who has been great so far.
Tony Watson from SF, ideally.
James needs to be in RR for sure, but Devo/Rondon certainly seem replaceable these days, sadly. They could sure use another high leverage guy for the late innings, and for when Pressly/Osuna are unavailable. Would love to have Peacock back in the pen also, but I like him for a more versatile role there.
So basically, Luhnow should go get a #3 starter and a back-end reliever, and jettison White for Alvarez. Somebody let him know.
Third starter, Peacock to the pen to replace James?

No new information. But just because I forgive doesn’t mean I’ll enjoy watching him the same way I do many of these other players.

Tucker also homered btw.
I’m glad he’s pitching well. I wish I enjoyed it more.

I think that is basically the book on him. I’m anxious for him to get his shot up here. He has had back to back great spring trainings and he had a great year last year in a hitters league. In my opinion, he has earned his shot up here and I hope he gets it soon. His stuff isn’t overpowering but it sure looks like the dude knows how to use what he has to pitch effectively. For all the talk about the big three (Whitley, Martin and JBB), Armenteros is overlooked and could surprise.
Jim, congrats on getting to be in the booth last night. I’ll bet you did a fantastic job. Wish I could have heard it.

That’s right on the money. It also shows why he hasn’t been considered a good but not top prospect.
Hope so but batting .156 and striking out lots.
Bill Brown tweeted about this the other day... He eventually decided he fixed it via his TV's settings:
https://twitter.com/brownietw
FWIW Tucker has homered the past two nights. Maybe this is him turning it around.
On the Sunday pre-game interview Luhnow mentioned the upcoming schedule may dictate another bullpen arm. And he mentioned the problem being the Kemp/White issues. He appeared he didn't want to take a chance on losing either Kemp/White. Makes me think Alvarez isn't even top-of-mind at this point barring injury.
To be fair, that was a hit and run where Bregman had no chance to even protect him.
2 runners on, 1 out for Correa and a foul ball gets missed and turns into a double play.
Altuve has the swim slide lined up to steal 2nd but his landing gear jams and he's out having never touched the bag.
Plus that prick Bauer is a pretty good pitcher. Fucker.
The idea of him being a slow starter is something of a misnomer. He starts slow at a new level not just every season. This is something else. I don't recall him being this bad this long at any point in his career.
Thru today: 18 games, 71 plate appearances, .152/.211/.348, 5 BB, 17 K
I hope Tucker goes on an absolute tear for a while and then helps them acquire a starter.
Kemp and White are the issue. Both are out of options, and one must leave the 25 man to make room for him, barring injury.

This article makes it pretty clear Luhnow's in no hurry, and that he expects some measure of versatility.
Good series win.
Astros and Twins came into the series tied for AL lead in batting average.
Love Josh using the whole field. I'm sure Berkman loved that Crawford box shot.
And this Verlander character may turn out to be a decent acquisition.
Wasn't a foul.
WP or passed ball.
I'm not convinced this hasn't been Dallas Keuchel pitching the last 4 starts.
Reddick must have had the world's worst jump on that.
That was a misfire from Laser Ramon

Well, I'm happy they didn't strand Chirinos, but more would have been nice.
"stupid exit velocity"
This team has never really invested in a DH.
Guduan pitched his ass off in Florida, shame it hasn't carried over.
It would be wonderful if James got his mojo back, he's the 7th inning guy they need.
From McTaggart tweets:
"He hasn't handled the fastball. He hasn't put fastballs in play like he normally does. He's getting pitched a little bit differently and he's going to have to adjust to that. It is a small sample. It's early in the season."
"The last thing I'd want to do is have a meeting with player and tell him he needs to hit for more power. That's like the kiss of death for a player. It's not going to help his swing; it's not going to help his contact."

Saw a video on line, that I can't find now of someone showing that he wasn't hiding his glove well with Correa at second and White batting. Correa could see in the glove and looked right for fast ball and looked left for off speed. It was interesting.
I think Neil is at least the age at which we started giving you crap. He's long overdue for some of that old man smack.
Where are you traveling now?
Wait, Pressley's marrying one of your high school classmates?
My comment was mostly tongue in cheek. I always assumed what he said had nothing to do with the Astros and was aimed at getting the NY media off his ass after a couple of bad starts.
First time seeing White in person this year. He lost a bunch of weight last year and got in decent shape. Did he gain it all back?
Well, whatever he changed it's working so far against the Yankees. Sale, on the other hand, is getting taken to the woodshed again.
Aren't the Astros on record stating they have no intentions of altering Tucker's swing? I don't know how he hits with that loop, but the numbers are there at every level so far (except the one that matters).
I wouldn't be concerned with his output yet, Slow starts seem to be in his DNA.
Mark, shame on you for not providing your father a classical education.

I get it. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case with everyone. I guess some of you are too young to remember the Muslim ban of 2018. Some of those “shithole” countries are certainly not considered blessed by some. At least where I live, the desired implication is very clear.
I wish I hadn’t started this... my bad!

Sometimes I find this kind of thing perplexing. Had he gone to college this year would have been his first full season of pro ball. Last year's high college draftees are in high-A or at best AA right now.
Alvarez has 6.
Tonight:
Ken Giles in for Bot 9
Blue Jays 6 - Red Sox 5
Benintendi grounded out
Betts walked
Moreland doubled, Betts scored, tied 6-6
Martinez walked (intentional)
Nunez pinch run for Moreland
Nunez stole 3rd
Bogaerts walkedi
Devers singled, Nunez scored
Red Sox win 7-6. Not sure if any closers harmed themselves afterwards.
One of the themes in various pieces written about the Astros is the information they make available to the players.
Actionable information in corporate-ese.
JV was impressed and bought into it.
The hitters get reports on opponents and themselves. As much as they want or think they can handle.
Giles apparently turned his self-flagellated nose up at the info they tried to give him. He didn't buy in. Buying in isn't a guarantee for success, but it seems foolhardy not to do so.
And I don't care if they were drafted by Branch Rickey. Every player in the organization can stands to benefit, including #'s 4, 27, 2, and 1.
The players that provide the offense were very high draft picks and would have done well in any organization. On the pitching side there are people like McHugh and Morton who have dramatically improved by coaching and development, but I can't think of someone on the offensive side like that. I can also think about Singleton, JD Davis, AJ Reed, who seem stuck at the AAA level.
The pitcher development seems to be ahead of the hitter development, but maybe I'm not seeing what's going on.
James you piece of crap. AAA awaits you.
We all wanted him. He's in Tampa now.
I'm confused: are you saying that HH's argument is bullshit, or that our economic policy is bullshit?
Pretty sure that if you pinch-run for the DH, the pinch-runner simply becomes the DH. Just like pinch-hitting for him.
You lose the DH when the DH is moved to a defensive position.
Pedroia singled
Bradley walked
Swihart flied out to center
Benintendi flied our to center
Betts K swinging
Giles gets the save
Lourdes Gurriel steals home off Sale in the 4th to make it 5-2 Blue Jays
Are they going to ban the deal to the Japanese, Korean and Australian leagues too? Because it's *exactly* the same deal. Are we worried about the Japanese "trafficking players"? If you want to ban payments to the Cuban government because that's our economic policy towards the country, then just say it.
JV didn't seem too concerned about his performance in the post-game. Just something to work out.
So, if an administration negotiated or signed off on this MLB deal, it would make it legit?
I assume so, since no one questioned the legality (that I know of) until today.
I wish I understood the law better. The Obama administration was negotiating for something illegal? There has to be many more nuances to this than just what the article has.
Sure. See, payments to Iran.
"...Cuban government and trade with it was illegal under current law."
Is this part true?
Please give us a heads-up when you are going to be on.
Jason Martin got the call up for the Pirates today. The Cole trade is looking like a win for both sides.
No excuse to blow that call in that situation. That was terrible and Oakland had a right to be pissed.
But they got him on the next pitch then threw 4 straight ballstoat Altuve and lost.
Fuck 'em.
It’s pretty awesome. My only quibble is that sometimes the lines can be long for a beer in the outside area during peak hours.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not only that but he delayed the call for the obvious purpose of fucking with Cole.
To have full captured the team and the experience he would have had to have a 600 page book. Which, frankly, I would have immensely enjoyed.
Also an editorial decision. Reiter was asked about not including Strom in this interview:
When you write a book like Astroball, which is about so many talented people doing so many different and novel things, you have to make some tough choices for the sake of character development and narrative. A few readers have reasonably complained that I didn’t write enough about Marwin Gonzalez, and Strom probably falls into that category, too. Even so, Strom does deserve a lot of credit for his work.....
Astroball is about how the Astros have managed to effectively combine man and machine to get the best out of both, and Strom’s a key part of that
Horse hockey. It is his book.
This was my main takeaway as well.
I don’t know how you determine that he deliberately missed calls. That part was incompetence. I am referring to his attitude and deliberate attempt to stir up trouble over his bad calls.
Bump.
Finally got around to reading Astroball. Really enjoyed it. A few quick hits:
- if an accomplished franchise like the Cardinals is/was that fractured, how bad were other franchises across baseball?
- the parts covering the Dark Times filled me with dread, even knowing what was coming (#buttslideptsd)
- they took it in the shorts over Brady Aiken. But they made the right call not because of the outcome but because his risk fell outside of their acceptable parameters.
- the most heartening side of the book was the acknowledgment of the human factor, flying in the face of many know nothing critics of the rebuild
- the JV trade recap had my pulse racing. Holy crap.
- on a critical note I thought he didn't quite convey what a catastrophic event Harvey was.
- funny to read about Sig chewing thru towels during the WS and thinking about what a sweating, palpitating mess I was doing the same. Something we all crave deeply, a WS title, and its essentially a 50/50 proposition.
- God bless Carlos Beltran
Many other highlights of course. Most of all, I feel fortunate that our franchise is in such good hands.
And, no. Idgaf if my pointing that out ruins it for that egomaniac.
He fucked the Rangers pretty good in the World Series.
Sad thing is, he isn't anywhere close to top ten worst umpires in the game.
T3:
Reddick...0-2...1-2...strikes out swinging
Springer singles to LF
Springer picked off 1B, sprints to 2B, throw wide and ruled safe. Rangers challenging, replay shows he beat the throw but came off the bag...yep, overturned...1-3-6
Altuve with an infield single right down the 3B line
Bregman strikes out looking
1-0 Rangers
Cintron tossed
Now A.J. tossed.
Framber gave up 2 of those hits to lefties.
Grumble.
Robby said in his post game interview that he was more nervous for his first AB tonight than he was for his first Major League AB.
He's growing on me a bit.
Best hitter, as the tying run with 2 outs in the ninth tries to bunt. And fails miserably.
WHAT THE FUCK?!
Jesus Fucking Christ, Jose. That was fucking embarrassing.
Yep, but Brantley isn’t. Don’t like that. Would like to see all the big guns in the order together at one time today in an effort to gain the split.

I'm a clark from back in the late 1990's, but let me say this:
I blame Wynnable for our two game losing streak.
Never start a thread bashing any of the Raup's, and especially not a week before the freaking season. Bad Juju.
Diaz's four errors to boot.
For god (Charlie Morton) sakes, never ever get in a land war in Asia on second most known is ragging on the Raup in the Whoopass.
Clue get.
Tommy Pham has a very interesting backstory.
Pham smacks one thru the drawn in infield to plate the run.
Rays have an insurmountable 3-1 lead.
This did inspire a great thread of memories. I was called out on Burke when I started here.
Yahoo is showing Correa out for today's game. Looks like Diaz getting the start today. Dammit man.
Looks like Framber celebrated his making of the team in style tonight.
Everyone should find time for reading a book.
I can't tell from the article whether Verlander's line "It was something that was important to me," is about being one of the highest paid pitchers or just getting an extension. The context is not very clear.
Vintage Charlie. Great read. https://theathletic.com/881062/2019/03/25/qa-charlie-morton-on-the-end-of-his-astros-tenure-joining-the-rays-and-the-matchup-against-his-pal-gerrit-cole/

Don't need to go searching for "similar articles" - there was a pretty vocal contingent of this board who compared him unfavorably to Snidely Whiplash at any available opportunity.
Crane told us what he wanted to do, then he has done it, and now set us up to keep doing it.
I don't think anybody is worrying about anything, it's just something to talk about in a ST where things were pretty set and there hasn't been much to discuss.
Best owner in Houston history.
Build a contender and contend for multiple years.
As a fan what more could you ask?
Because the owner has said he won't exceed it. Don't know/don't care about that, then don't read the fucking thread and whine about others who do so.
This place is interesting. As an out of towner I was thrilled to find a really smart Astros baseball community.
Until I had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with good ole Jim R - the proverbial internet tough guy.
JR decides who has the right to speak her. He demands credentials. He needs posts to be appropriately worded.
He doesn't need anyone else to contribute. He is MR CONTRIBUTOR.
I had this crazy ass notion that being the fan of the same team made it OK for 'outsiders' to post here.
But no, good ole JR just wants to play a colossal game of dick out deciding who gets to talk Astros baseball and who doesn't.
So when I mention at 10pm at night that I saw Verlander was in final stages of contract negotiation, and I look at the headlines and don't see it
mentioned, I figured what the hell, no one could possibly find fault with me sharing that insight.
Wrong.
Good ole JR decided that he had to attack even that innocuous post. Personally.
You guys have a helluva website. And I know you are a tight knit community, so leaving this here isn't going to make any friends.
But it truly sucks that one tired, bitter old man can spew his shit with immunity.
Good Ole JR, kiss my internet loving As-tros. goodnight.
Fantastic news!
Oh fuck yeah
That's all that matters right there. Crane can afford as much as he pleases. All I care is that he does his best to bring more trophies home, and right now that's what he's doing.
While agree with you Jim, Crane/Luhnow can do anything they want, I think signing Cole is far fetched IF they intend to keep Springer and Correa. Cole’s deal will be 5-7 years most likely and will be mid $20M’s. Even with Verlander off the books in 3 years, if they sign all of the core 4 and Cole, that will be 5 players making $100-120M. I can’t see a scenario where that works. Now if they have decided that are only keeping one of Springer and Correa, it is a little more palatable.
A lot may depend on the kind of year Correa has this season. Does he stay healthy? Does he take the next step to MVP type of player??

Twitter said 2 years, $66 million.
IMO, money well spent .. if true.
I don't see any way they can afford Cole now, but I like this move.
I have not seen one for Boras in particular, but there is a standard MLB agent registration that outlines much of the player/agent relationship, what the agent can and cannot do on behalf of the player, etc. You must be registered with MLB to represent a player. I've seen contracts for other agents, as well. It's much like a lawyer/client contract.
It's never that way. Ever. The player always maintains 100% control. That's how it works. Players can be influenced by their agents, buy into the bullshit the agent tells them, believe their own hype...but the player always has the power. Always.
McTaggart tweet:
The Astros could have a contract extension in place with Justin Verlander prior to end of spring camp, owner Jim Crane said Friday.
“I don’t think anything is final, but if it’s going to get done it’s going to get done before we get out of here," Crane said
We saw just the other day with Maldonado that this is not true.
Yup. And, sometimes the shot they call is to yield material decision responsibility to their agent and the player simply signs what is put in front of them. Which is stupid but people are sometimes naive, inexperienced or just basically not smart about these things.
Should* I don't think it always works that way, in practice.
Would be very interested / appreciative if anyone (Nate?) has rough math on what his arbitration years would've been expected to be and what it implies for his free agency rate
Brewers will lead the league in flowing locks.
Even though Tanielu has had a great spring, he was not going to beat out White in terms of major league experience. So even though White was not impressive (to me) and he is basically your starting DH, you now know what you have in Tanielu, Toro and Alvarez. If by May, White is not producing, I suspect the need to go to one of those three will be there. Unless, of course, you trade one of those three or package them to go get a major league quality bat for the DH spot. Can't think of anyone other than Edwin Encarnacion at this point.
Fisher and Straw lost their bid to unseat Tony Kemp for pretty much the same reason as White had over Tanielu, Toro and Alvarez. Kemp has the experience coming off the bench and providing quality ABs. Perez lost his spot because of two things: 1) Gudain has had a very good spring and 2) Perez delayed his pitching routine so he was well behind everyone else.
Another kid I was very impressed with other than Whitley, Martin, and Bukakas (sp?) was Beilak. He (Beilak) was very composed on the mound and threw strikes. He just needs a little more seasoning it seems but overall he had the makeup to be a major leaguer (IMHO).
Saw him pitch on Saturday. He was not in control of his pitches. His breaking ball bounced in front of the plate or so far outside, it was the definition of being wild. His fastball was touching 94mph low in the strike zone. He did not have control of the fastball either so most of them were called balls by the home plate umpire (rightfully so). The ones he did throw for strikes were hit hard but resulted in outs.
IMHO, James has some work to do to harness his stuff and be ready by Opening Day, which looks like a longshot to me right now. He might come out his next outing and have pinpoint control and throw harder but from what I saw Saturday, he was not that guy.
Cuts #4 of the spring:
Fisher, Perez, Straw, Alvarez, Emanuel, Mayfield, McCurry, Tanielu, Toro.
The Perez move implies things are looking good for Reymin Guduan.
Here's the pitch to Springer (you may need to zoom out to find it):

Here's the best defense I've come across: The three batter minimum for relief pitchers is a good thing
Thanks.

It may be the GOAT cheese thread, but my favorite is still the one where we all learned we were all slowly turning into oil.
Same here on both counts... being an old fart and actually liking the stare.
Tucker is good insurance for a Josh Reddick injury or lack of performance in 2019. That's good insurance to have too. Who has impressed me most is Nick Tanielu, the New Zealander. He's been quite steady on defense at third and has hit well from the right side. I'd personally rate him as higher in the pecking order than Tyler White right now, but I'm not the judge of anything, so it means nothing what I think.
But if you think about Tanielu as insurance, it's good to know he can be in the same role as White in 2018. In the minors ready to come up when injury or lack of performance is keeping the team from winning. Another player who early on impressed me was Abraham Toro. His ability to hit with power from both sides is there, just needs to be more consistent. If Toro continues to improve in the minors, he can eventually be the heir apparent to Marwin Gonzales on this team. Here is hoping his switch goes off in the minors as he continues to get the experience.
You should have posted an angry video to your Vine.
GOAT thread.
Of course, if this group is given half a chance at a pun thread you can consider it a feta compli.
This is 2020. All these guys, certainly the guys from North America, have grown up with social media. They have been the center of everyone's attention since they were six. Those of you yearning for the days of crew cuts and no batting gloves and guys who open their mouths only to spit a stream of Red Man are setting yourselves up for disappointment.
Of course, I'm the one most consternated by all these idiotic proposed rule changes, so I guess in some senses we're paddling up the same septic stream.
Between Alvarez and Game 5, that’s really one of the better trades in franchise history.
Edit: son of a gun, wasn’t quick enough on the draw.
The Dodgers released Josh Fields.
Yordan Alvarez says hi.
I have to think Rodgers is about out of chances in Houston.
Fisher also runs well and plays a good OF. Reed has one "skill".
You'd think he and Reed could bring something useful back.
The Morton (un)signing is my most disappointing Astros experience in the last 4 or 5 years. With each starting pitcher tweak and strain this spring training, it's all the more disappointing...
Fisher is more comfortable at the plate with a swing adjustment he has made.
And now is being skipped in his next start (which was scheduled for tomorrow) and won't pitch again until next weekend.
'80 was so tough. I imagine we all believe a healthy J.R. would have turned the table. But I also didn't know if that team would ever be back in that position again. I felt very sad for a long time.
I'm sure that Philly Fan will cut him quite a bit of slack when he turns out not to be Babe Ruth reincarnated.
Disastrous outing for Devenski today.
