And about shooting him in the head and women are property.

Sounds like a charming fellow.

The willingness to buy into these crazy narratives about people suddenly looting and breaking into homes for food is what confounds me. Where are the critical thinking skills?

That feeling when you score the second most points in the league but also the second most points in your match up that week.  Amazing week for Austro.  His score almost lapped half the league.

I had three wide receivers go nutso, two TDs apiece, plus lots of yards. On any other day, if you'd told me that Lamar Jackson was going to pick up 40+ points for my opponent, I would have said "well, that's an L". I've had a very lucky season: when my opponent has had a good day, my team has had a good day, too, and for the most part when my team has had a lousy day, my opponent has had a down day, too.

I’m fully expecting an acquittal in the Senate with some Republicans joining the Dems, but the good thing about the public hearing is that almost everyone listening will know that what he did was dead wrong.  They’ll also know that if Obama or Clinton had done that, they’d have lost their job for sure. So, it will be basically be distilled down to “We’ll never turn on our criminal.”

That’s fine and all, but that cynicism and criminal abatement comes with a cost.  May be naive, but that’s my hope.

I think the Dems are relying on that. I think they believe that actually removing Trump would set off a reaction that would cost them (and us), and they're counting on the Senate not to impeach (if they even send charges up to the Senate). But by going through all of this, they're going to get loads of Trump's ugly shit out in the open in time for the election, and they'll be able bang on it again and again through the entire campaign. And Republicans will have to decide, late in the game, whether Trump is too toxic and has to be replaced by somebody else.

I'm pretty pessimistic about the Astros' (total) innocence in all of this, but I'm going to call bullshit here. Advance scouts watching the opposition and trying to get a database of signs is totally normal. Binoculars and cameras are perfectly legal for any spectator. The only real problem is if the scouts are at an Astros game and relaying stolen signs in real time by phone or hand/voice signals.

I think you're missing the larger point: the Yankees are unhappy. The Astros are going to pay.

If you could have massaged that into haiku format, I would declare you the winner right now.

Five whistling bench guys,
Seven banging garbage cans,
Five butthurt Yankees.

It's even meta-descriptive, which I'm pretty sure was Homer's point in the first place.

Talk Zone / Re: More controversy

They're probably going on what they heard from players who were current or former Astros. Of course those guys could have been lying, especially if they were still on the team. They might have exaggerated the extent or effectiveness of the spying to mess with other players' heads, or they might have lied about the methods so it would be harder for opponents to counter.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if different front-office people have been told different stories so that a leaker can be identified.

His contribution filing in at SS was probably underappreciated nationally.

This was the tie-breaker for me. He filled in at the most difficult position for a couple of months and played it well. I don't think he got enough credit for that.

On a completely unrelated note, I almost got suspended in high school for arguing about whether or not Sidney Carton and Charles Darnay were doppelgangers.  My teacher argued that they must have been identical looking, otherwise Carton could not have taken Darnay's place at the guillotine.  I argued that all that mattered is that someone's head rolled, and whose it was wasn't particularly important....that blood cleansing was the point, not justice.

Your reading is entirely plausible. Few if any in the mob waiting for the blade to fall would know who was who, and the powers-that-be who *would* know wouldn't dare postpone the show. One head's as good as another for their purpose.

With Georgia and LSU ahead of them and presumably on a collision course for the SEC title game,  the committee has their Darling Crimson Tide poised to get into the playoff.

If you can't even make it to your conference championship game, you should not be in the CFP. That would cause some of these conferences to reconsider the weak division/strong division game that they play, where the second-place team in the strong division gets to stand out of the way and wait for mayhem.

Talk Zone / Re: Cole and Game 5

I would've loved to have him back, but I'm confident that Luhnow has been planning contingencies for replacing Cole for several months now. The Morton reclamation project worked out. The Miley one, not so much. But I imagine they'll combine some form of mid-market signing with what's already in the organization. McCullers will be back too. If he's able to return to form, that's three pretty good arms in the rotation already.

It seems like it's usually not until their 2nd year back that TJ cases really return to their previous effectiveness, so I don't think I'd count on McCullers being an ace next year. I think he'll be ok, but it's going to take a while for him to regain feel and confidence.

I saw one opinion today refer to one of the Mets pitchers (Wheeler?) as a possible Morton 2.0 project. I expect them to do something like that. They're going to need to pay Springer soon.

I don't like questioning Hinch but why no Cole at all? Why pitch to Soto in the 8th? Not his best managed game.

I think we’re going to hear rumors leaked out after the series is over that the injury to Scherzer’s neck was bullshit. If they win it will have been a genius move by them. We shall see.

I'm so fucking mad at Verlander right now.

He has done this HR thing all year. It's not a surprise.

What's annoying is that the offense has done the score-in-the-first-and-then-go-to-sleep thing again, which they've also done with disappointing frequency this year.

Soto changed his approach with 2 strikes. Both feet were flat and stance was very wide. Haven't noticed that from him before. I think his ankle is bothering him.

How do you characterize Altuve's blunder - stupid, selfish? Given the game situation and the skewed risk-reward ratio, there is no justification for the steal attempt. It's not just that he forfeited the go ahead run for his team, but how many more stress pitches could the Astros have put on Strasburg? Hard to gauge how much damage he caused to his team's chance to win the game.

I'm sure he thought he was going to "provide a spark".

i think Fox called MLB who called the Washington front office who called Soto and told him to drop the crotch grab. That makes his "Soto Shuffle" bullshit slightly less annoying, but it's still an arrogant piece of nonsense. I wish Bob Gibson were still pitching. Soon enough  Soto would have a real reason to grab his crotch.

I’m going to try really, really hard to hate this Nationals team but, even over 7 games, I’m not sure I’m going to succeed.  They’re the reincarnation of the 2017 Astros, and anyone who could bring themselves to hate that team was a dick.

I still want them to lose in 5, but they’re a fun team to watch, presumably, for those who don’t want them to die like dogs.  (See?   I’m really trying).

I suspect that we'll hate Soto for one reason or another before it's all over.

No idea how this game is going to end but it's my Patriots D vs Fredia's Tom Brady and the D is kicking ass.  The Patriots have this game well in hand.  Brady just needs to hand off the next 20 snaps or so.

As long as he keeps handing it off to Michel, not White.

174
Torres covering second? Agreed (!) re Bracamonte’s presentation.

The OFers were very deep in a no doubles defense so anything Altuve hit had to be hard, high, and off the wall or over it to score Springer. When he hit it, my first thought was “that’s out,” then I saw it was headed toward the bullpen well. I was not certain till it hit the wall, and I hoped Springer was sprinting.

I never did figure out how far along Springer was and what would have happened if the ball had bounced off the wall still in play. Did anybody else see where Springer was?

ETA: Never mind, I just watched that outfield video. Springer knew it was out  almost immediately and started jogging long before he got to 2nd. And Torres headed to cover 2nd and then just kept jogging to the dugout; that was fun to see.

Prior to this year would have been preferred by me. That’s about as disorganized group of good athletes as I’ve seen.  Merely adequate defensive coaching would have given them a puncher’s chance at making the playoff.  Instead, they’re fighting to be considered as good as Baylor and Iowa State.

I haven't seen much of Baylor, but Iowa State may shred them. I figured Texas would have trouble tackling Pooka because that guy is just downright elusive, but it was worse than I expected.

176
Glad he did not. With first open, they would have IBB Altuve.

Absolutely. If that base is open and Marisnick is on deck, there's no question they walk Altuve and take their chances with Jake.

What about calling a timeout to take the safety?

And even after that, the punter dances around in the end zone for a few seconds before stepping out. It's just 3 or 4 seconds, but it still demonstrates a lack of awareness of what's going on.

Jesus, not only does Texas gag it to Kansas, Penn State gags it to Harbaugh's bunch of chokers.

Turns out I can't read: I misread both of those finals (I was looking at the spread; I blame Altuve). Still, it takes a last-second field goal to beat Kansas? That's not going to sit well.

Gonna have to get three innings from Rondon.

I doubt that Rondon can go three against these guys without giving up runs. The offense is going to have to do something, and soon.

187
Not true.  He has a good change and a good slider.

If he trusted them, he would have thrown one of them.

188
Who is left to pitch?

Rondon and ??

Well, they've got Chapman, and we've got Rondon.

189
Osuna kept throwing the same pitch over and over again to LeMahieu

It's the only pitch he's got.

190
I'm not nervous anymore.

191
Does LeMahieu hit every third spot in the order? I'm tired of seeing him.

192
Nothing's ever easy.

193
I'm more nervous now than I've been all night.

194
As my wife said, a passed ball here would definitely be the cherry on top.

195
If he weren't so freakishly tall, that would have been over him. And now he lucks into a stop that should have squirted by him.

196
Did judge have that or was that going out? It seemed pretty close to the wall at its apex.

I think Judge probably would have had it.

197
Well, it was unconventional, but that was the double play we needed!

198
Or a pop-up. That's fine.

199
It's time for these assholes to hit into a double play.

200
So frustrating.

Oh well, at least we now have the cushion against an accidental solo homer. Just don't walk people. If Harris can get us through this inning, we've got Smith, Abreau (I doubt that he'd be put in in this situation), Rondon, and Osuna.

201
I was just about to type that it's time for a Sanchez passed ball or three.

202
Jose has actually been a lot more patient lately.

If he can keep the eagle from landing on his back during the anthem, everything else is gravy.

208
I was really hoping they would close it out tonight, partly so that the Yankee fans would have to watch their season end at home, but mostly because it meant that the Astros would be able to start Verlander and Cole in games 1 & 2 against Washington on normal rest. That can still happen if Urquidy et al (and the damn offense!) take care of business tomorrow, but the pitching matchups probably mean that tomorrow's game will be a topsy-turvy affair.

209
I wonder if there are prop bets on how many pitches Sanchez fails to catch.

210
Nice inning from Peacock.   Good to see..

There's hope! It's like Gandalf cresting the hill to turn the tide!

211
My assumption is Urquidy tomorrow.  No one else really makes sense.

Yes, I'm confident Urquidy will start. I'm just unsure what they'll do if he implodes.

212
Risky to start him after being out so long?

Maybe. I was kind of figuring that they would start Urquidy tomorrow and have Peacock as the backup plan, but Hinch and Strom must have something else in mind. I guess if Peacock finishes this out, they've got everybody else available tomorrow.

213
I am not giving up on hoping for a rally, but it is impossible for me to be upset about winning 2 of 3 in NY.

Yeah, that's really the bottom line. They did what they needed to do.

214
Great job by Verlander to keep things where they were through 7. I'm a little surprised to see Peacock up, but what do I know?

215
Chirinos is going to be glad when this season is finally over.

216
Just cannot get the hit they need.

217
Of course, if Buck et al had any spine, they would call the NY fans out for last night's treatment of Greinke and this nonsense.

218
FS1 should filter the crowd chants when they are saying, "fuck Altuve."

No, let America hear their collective intelligence.

219
Sigh.  I'm giving up on trying to keep people from pissing off the BBGs.

They're clearly already pissed off.

220
I'd like to thank Boone for putting Stanton in the middle of their order. He's not a great bet under normal circumstances, but with this injury he's useless.

221
Why?! I thought that was gone.

They've brought in the dead balls.

222
leave him in, robbi hasn't done anything.

Just a hair too obvious.

223
no one ever remembers Ronnie Milsap.

Or Jose Feliciano. I want to wish you a merry ALCS!

224
This crew had better give the Astros' pitchers the same kind of strike zone tomorrow at MMPUS.

225
i'd rather they end it today.  Don't give the other team any hope.

Me too, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

226
Well, with any luck, that may be the end of Paxton. I'm ready to take our chances with their bullpen.

227
that's the way to show'em Astros.

They're resting up for tomorrow.

228
Brantley was pissed.

Yeah, he doesn't shot it often, but that pitch was ridiculously far outside.

229
Well, if there's any silver lining to this, it's that the stress level is quite a bit lower. At least so far.

230
I really thought that last night they were showing signs of starting to hit again, but tonight is back to the same dispiriting stuff.

231
Yuli is a pop-up factory right now.

232
Paxton is at what, 47 pitches? We may yet see Ottavino, who is the cure for what ails us.

233
Damn it, Yordan, they're throwing you first-pitch fastballs every AB. You need to be ready for that.

234
If that foul pole is at 316' HIcks's ball goes foul. Frustrating.

235
Looks like it's gonna be a bullpen night after all.

That's an issue with Urquidy going tomorrow. At the very least we need to make the Yankees face the same problem.

236
Fuck. JV didnt make his pitches when he was up in the count.

Yeah, he had him 0-2 and then couldn't find the zone. And then it hits the pole in their shitty little league RF.

237
Last night's top of the zone of *so* frustrating. I missed the GZ because I was out, but I have to think there was a lot of commentary about that.

238
High strike looks like it's in play tonight.

It is for the Yankee pitchers. Remains to be seen whether Verlander will get those calls.

That reminds me....last nite I was channel surfing and ESPN had this doc about the history of college football and television. I am old enough to remember most of it. There was for several years in the '60s but one college football game televised per weekend. And each team could only appear on the Game of the Week once per year. So, if Texas/Oklahoma was televised nationally the Texas/A%M game could not be even if the Aggies hadn't used up their quota of one. My how things have changed.

I remember waiting for the scores after that game. They had the old board up behind the announcer, and they would slip cards in with the school names and the scores, and that was how you found out how the rest of the world did.

Strasburg has been superb tonight. One measly run through seven innings.

They wouldn't even have that run if Soto were a half-way competent outfielder.

252
See you guys on Wednesday, that was a rough one.

Tuesday?

253
He didn’t fucking touch that

He wasn't within a foot of it. How can they miss that?

254
I wish James would put a wrinkle on one of these pitches.

255
We need to reassess the ground rules.

I think everything should be in play. Just for the comedic value.

256
The difference is that later in the series those mental rolodexes do have info.

True. If you get that far.

257
I miss the Pressly that could get people out.

258
I sure miss the Vaunting.

I think Smoltz is actually on to something. Think about how many times this year the Astros did nothing through the first few innings and then destroyed the pitching in the 5th or 6th innings after they had seen the stuff a bit. With the way Boone is handling his staff (and same for Cash in the last series), they're simply not getting that third time around against the same pitcher.

259
Total impotence.

260
I'm not looking forward to this Alvarez AB. Hopefully he'll limit the damange to a K and leave Yuli with a chance.

261
Man, Bregman had that 3-0 pitched timed right, but he was under it.

262
Altuve being uncharacteristically patient tonight. I wonder how egregious the strike 1 call will be.

263
Another shit at bat by Uncle Mike.

Wasn't helped by ball 4 being called a strike.

264
Let's torch the fat man.

265
Wow, 6-pitch inning for Smith. I didn't see that coming.

266
any chance diaz could steal second?

I doubt that Sanchez could both catch the ball *and* throw accurately to second, but I doubt they'll send him.

267
If by good you mean fouling back a fat fastball then missing one entirely, sure.

At least he swung. That's way ahead of several other people.

268
Did anyone else envisage a collision?

It seemed a little tighter than it needed to be.

269

272

To put it mildly, Osuna sucks when he comes back out after sitting.

273
So if Springer is actually hurt, what do we have? Reddick in CF, Tucker in RF, Brantley in LF?

274
Tucker looks fucking ridiculous

Now we won't even be able to trade him for pitching.

275
Does he come back out for the 8th?

I imagine so. Unless it's a 30-minute break, which I would gladly accept.

276
Very nice job by Harris.

277
another pitcher that deserved a win.

Yes, you certainly can't complain very much about the pitching in the postseason.

278
LeMahieu is starting to piss me off. I liked him when he was with the Rockies, but not so much now.

279
Man, Alvarez got fastballs in the happy part of the plate and missed them. It's been so long since anybody threw a pitch there that he probably didn't know what to do

280
Bregman watches ball 3 for strike 3. Jesus christ blue

I'm willing to bet that's not a strike to a Yankee.

281
Sanchez is a butcher behind the plate.

He's horrible Even on ordinary pitches he's all over the place.

282
Tucker's swing can't be brought to bear on a high fastball: it's physically impossible. Consequently, he has to learn to lay off of that stuff. That third strike was absolutely ludicrous.

283
Our pen is going to have to handle at least three innings tonight. I wish that worried me less.

284
Yordan has been very ordinary lately. But I like his odds with the Yankee wind tunnel to RF.

285
If Stanton is out in LF that's a hit.

Lots of baseball to be played.  Need a good game from JV tonight, and will someone PLEASE rattle the bats!

Yeah, in the overall scheme of things, last night's loss is no worse than a 16-inning, 1-run heartbreaker. But this sure is a lousy time for these guys to fall into one of their multi-day slumps.

289
God, the first game isn't even over yet and already I'm tired of hearing how fantastic the Yankees are.

290
Ordinarily I'd be optimistic about tomorrow with Verlander on the mound, but since we're in an American League park and he won't be batting, I'm not sure where the runs will come from.

291
"Incredible defensive play."

You mean the one where he went 6 steps to his right and caught a line drive? And then tossed it back into the infield to double off a guy who stumbled and slipped while turning around? Yeah, that was almost like Roberto Clemente.

292
Carlos has been useless... absolutely useless

Defense has  been good. Offense has been no worse than anybody else's.

293
Was Boone picking his nose again?

It's a target-rich environment.

294
All they have to do is win every game Verlander and Cole start. No big deal, right?

That would imply that they score at least 4 runs.

295
A baserunner!

296
I figured there was a good chance they would lose this game, but I thought they would at least make it interesting. I'm really concerned that the offense is going to take the rest of the month off. They've had one good inning in six postseason games.

297
Bregman was about by a whole step. How can the ump miss that.

Is it Nelson at 1st?

298
That doesn't really fit the narrative of Gleyber Torres being the best baseball player ever in any universe.

299
He’d miss, but the ump would say he didn’t.

"You idiot! He's hit everything he's aimed at!"

300
Just a pathetic exhibition. I hope they're getting it out of their system tonight.

Milwaukee wins again. St Louis has the day off, so Milwaukee is 1 game out going into the weekend. Milwaukee goes to Colorado for the weekend, while St Louis hosts the Cubs and their 8-game losing streak. Perhaps they'll show a little pride and make things difficult for St Louis.

Speaking of Biden, he has been hiding behind Pelosi's skirt this whole time and continues to do so.  He's not up to the task and - with Trump likely gone or severely hobbled - it's no longer about beating Trump, it's about motivating voters to go out there and run the table.  Biden is not that candidate, and neither is Bernie.

You're a lot more optimistic about this process than I am. I think it's a huge risk, and there's the chance that it will galvanize his base and some of the fence-sitters, making sure that every single one of them votes. Combined with the usual Dem complacency, you could have a repeat of 2016, where the popular vote goes against him but he wins the EC. And then you'll *truly* see a maniac unleashed. Not to mention that RBG won't last six more years.

Toro got a good audition at third this year. Not sure he is the answer but he certainly could be. I wonder what the third base - short stop free agent list looks like.

The top 3B FAs are Rendon and Donaldson. I'd *love* to have Rendon, but he's going to cost a fortune. Top SS is Gregorius; I guess he could leave the Yankees (I suppose they'd move Torres to SS and make LeMahieu the full-time 2B), but I'd be surprised if that actually happens.

I think it's more likely that if they think they need a future 3B so that they can say goodbye to Carlos, they'll find somebody young they can get in a trade and use Diaz at 3B for a year or two while that somebody develops.

Will Carlos appear in a game for the Astros again? Not much time left.

I don't understand this. He's still under control. He's arb-eligible, but I don't think he's going to be able to put together a strong case in arbitration, specifically because of his injury history. So the Astros will have to pay ($7.5MM? he's making $5.0MM this year), but not so much that it won't be worth taking the chance that he'll actually be healthy next year. If they only get 80-100 games out of him again next year, *then* maybe they do something (e.g., trade).

Not sure how many spots were taking about.

It may come down to whether they want the switch hitting infielder or the lefty outfielder.

What are the injury replacement rules? If somebody (cough, cough) gets hurt in the middle of a series, can they be replaced by somebody who has continued to work out? Or do you just have to tough out the remainder of the series with the rest of the 25-man roster you started with?

Weekend probables aren't available yet. But 7 of their last 10 are vs LAA, the other 3 vs Sea.  So they're unlikely to see anything resembling Koufax in his prime.

The supposed quality of the opposing pitcher seems to have very little correlation to what the offense does. Sometimes they blitz very good pitchers, and sometimes they're completely ineffective against poor ones. They're kind of confounding in that way.

Strike 3 HPU made the call that he swung.

I'm not sure it's as simple as that, even if it seems that way. Ballplayers are like everyone else. They're creatures of habit.

As everybody is pointing out, if it were as simple as I wish, everybody would do it.

Of course I'd like to see him be more selective as well. My thought is simply, at this point in his career does any expect that to suddenly change?  He is what he is. So why (not YOU) constantly bitch about it?  What he is won an MVP so I guess I'm mostly satisfied with him. But I get what you're saying.

I don't think anybody is expecting him to change, and that's actually what's so exasperating. It's not like asking to re-tool his swing or something. It's something that would seem to achievable: be more selective in certain easily recognizable situations. And yet the change never comes. Hence the frustration.

C'mon, Wade, buckle down here.

445
My fervent hope is this reflects a fatal flaw in Boston's organization that will hamstring them in coming years.

You and me both. But it demonstrates the difficulty of Luhnow's upcoming tasks. Cole presents a very difficult case in point: there's no denying his quality and value, but he may well receive offers along the line of $30M for 6 or 7 years. Do you make that commitment, knowing that you've got other guys coming in the pipeline that need to be paid too? Or do you thank him for his service and try to find other, younger replacements? Hard call.

446
They will have to spend their way out of it.

I think they already have obscene commitments for next year: Price ($32M), Sale ($30M), Bogaerts ($20M), JD Martinez ($23.75M, if he opts in), Pedroia ($13M, ouch), Rusney Castillo ($14.75M, anybody seen him lately?), Eovaldi ($17M). In fact, it looks like Vasquez is the only other guy under contract ($4M), and they've well short of a team. Lots of pre-arb and arb guys. Betts will cost them a fortune. They've already got $159+ in commitments. If Sale and Eovaldi are truly injured, Pedroia is washed up, and Castillo is still doing his disappearing act,, they are well and truly fucked. Baseball-reference estimates their payroll at $224M, $223M, and $238M for the next three years. Imagine what happens when they have to pay Devers.

447
Mr. Happy seems to be pointing in a very probable situation.

Yup. I didn't realize the Boston's pipeline is as depleted as it apparently is. Breaks my heart.

After they turned a double-play to end the top of the 5th (I think), everybody was trotting off the field but Greinke kind of stood there looking around with a puzzled look on his face. Maybe he just lost track of the number of outs, but the look was as if he had just been teleported onto the field and didn't understand where he was.

There is a decades long history of US military aircraft refueling at Prestwick beginning in the 40s and continuing through at least the 70s. I don't know for sure, but I have no reason to believe that the US has ever discontinued its refueling operations there. During the 50s and 60s, Prestwick was a major refueling hub for trans-Atlantic US military flights. I have landed in Prestwick for the purpose of refueling in US military aircraft on flights both originating and terminating in Turkey. That was many, many years ago.

I have no doubt that corruption (witting and unwitting) in the Trump presidency is vast and deep, but the Prestwick thing seems like a stretch.

July 8, 2001:

Scott Elarton started for the Astros against the Royals in Kansas City, which gets hot like few places get hot.  After Royals starter Chad Durbin hit the first two Astros batters in the top of the 1st, Elarton drilled Royals leadoff hitter Rey Sanchez.  Elarton is ejected, and Villone enters the game.  Villone went 5 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, while striking out 4.  Astros went on to win 14-5

I guess my memory about the length of his stint was wrong. Still a gutsy performance. Thanks for looking that up!
