My 12 year old son was #27 for his team last year.  (His first of organized baseball)   He got moved to pitcher by the end of the season and his brothers nicknamed him "Fehrlander."   This year he was able to get on a team called the Astros and decided to go with #35 and Fehrlander on the back of the jersey.

Altuve's mad dash for me.  I was travelling with my sons and we listened to it on the radio.  We went nuts and I was honking the horn of my truck like a madman.

It reminded me of my reaction when I was driving racing home from football practice trying to catch the end of Game 6 vs the Mets as I listened to Billy Hatcher's homer to tie the game.

Something about listening to it on the radio with my boys that helped tie it back to the traditions I had with my Dad.  Better ending this time.

Thanks to all the mods and folks that make OWA possible.

I grew up going to Houston from Brownsville to watch Astro games as our family vacation every summer.  I never met anyone who cared as much about the Astros as I did.  Then I found this place.  The BFT and the insanely scrolling TZ introduced me to a bunch of folks more passionate about the Astros than I was.  I have learned much about the game by reading more and posting less.   Thanks to all the regular contributors.  I hope some of the old timers poke their heads in to celebrate.

My Dad died in 2000.  Mom passed in 2012.  I got to witness last night's game with my 12,14 and 16 year old sons with me.  They all get it.  Their teeth were cut during the lean years and they really appreciate what we got to experience over the past 4 weeks.

What a ride.

First Astros memory was at 8 years old when my family took me to the dome in 1979 to see a game vs. the Padres.  It was free T-Shirt night and I got a replica rainbow gut with the #79 on the back and a "Tony's Square Pan Pizza on the sleeve.  The Astros won that game.  They ended up sweeping the entire weekend series and I was hooked.  Got an autograph from a guy with a funny mustache named Rollie Fingers.

Summer vacations ended up becoming a week long trip to Houston from Brownsville for a dome stand in the summer.  Astroworld by day, ballgame at night.
We didn't get the Astros on TV back home so I spent many a summer's night sitting outside with my Pops listening to the games on the radio.

It's been fun to see my own kids baseball memories begin to grow.  They weren't old enough for the dome, but have memories of MMP.  They have grown up during the lean years of the post Biggio era.     We were at a game vs the Reds in 2011 after the salary purge had started.  My kids kept asking "who?" as the lineup was announced.  My then 8 year old son remarked "at least they still have Bourgeois."  Lean times indeed.  Makes this year all the sweeter.

We have since relocated to the DFW area and I took them to the Friday game in Arlington.  We had a blast watching the Astros tear up the hated Rangers.

Get your boxes at a place like UHaul. And then follow the packing instructions on those boxes, e.g., books only in book boxes, etc. Pack remembering that someone will have to carry the box upstairs, i.e., don't make it too heavy. Get one of those nice tape dispensers with lots of tape and some good Magic Markers/Sharpies. Label every box.

This, except get your boxes at Lowe's.  An 18x24x18 box is $4.24 at Uhaul and $1.32 at Lowe's.

The contract also includes a clause that the Astros will pay Phillips' college tuition.

I wonder how a deal like that affects the slotting number?

Pincus said the Phillies were interested in taking Phillips in the fourth round of the draft but could not match the bonus money offered by Houston.

Beer and Queso / Re: Texans '11
« on: December 21, 2011, 12:21:13 pm »
You're still trying to project things I didn't say.  The Steelers cannot win that division without another BAL loss. The Texans cannot get a bye without at least one BAL or NE loss. Therefore, it's in their best interest for the Ravens to lose again, which I was presumming meant PIT won that division.

Gotcha.  We agree.

28
Beer and Queso / Re: Texans '11
« on: December 20, 2011, 07:18:12 pm »
I never said they did. What I meant was, it's in the Texans best interest for the Steelers to win that division. What the Steelers do can greatly effect the Texans.

If the Texans win out and either BAL or NE lose 1 game PIT could go 2-0, 1-1, or 0-2 and it wouldn't affect the Texans seeding or bye week.

If the Steelers win the division, the Texans will be helped by nature of the Ravens loss, not by PIT victories or lack thereof.  It would only impact where PIT is seeded and potential division/championship round matchups.

29
Beer and Queso / Re: Texans '11
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:31:32 pm »
Of course it does. The Texans lose a tiebreaker with the Ravens but win it against the Steelers. Who wins that division could decide if the Texans get a bye or not. Lots of playoff implications.

The only scenarios I was referring to were ones in which the Texans win their final two games.

In order for the Steelers to win their division they have to finish a full game ahead of Baltimore because the Ravens have beaten them twice head to head.  The only way the Steelers can get a game ahead of the Ravens is if Baltimore loses one of their last two.  A Ravens loss coupled with two Texans wins guarantees the Texans a first round bye no matter what the Steelers do.

Your original post said that "The Texans need BAL to lose again and PIT to win that division"  My point was that the Texans don't need the Steelers to win the division in order to get the first round bye.

30
Beer and Queso / Re: Texans '11
« on: December 20, 2011, 01:31:05 pm »
It does if they win their division with a better record than Houston.

Which would mean the Texans would have to lose to either IND or TEN.  At that point, they wouldn't deserve the bye week.

Either way, I sure like talking about getting a potential #1 seed with 2 weeks to go rather than trying to figure out draft position.

31
Beer and Queso / Re: Texans '11
« on: December 20, 2011, 01:07:06 pm »
I think Stan's scenario was a NE loss and BAL/HOU win out, resulting an a three-way tie.  If NE win out, the Texans - as you pointed out - need the Ravens to drop one of the last two to garner a bye.

Yep...

I guess the comment that threw me a bit was PIT needing to win their Division.  Whatever the Steelers do from here on out doesn't really impact the Texans.

32
Beer and Queso / Re: Texans '11
« on: December 20, 2011, 11:06:01 am »
Conference record only matterd in a three-way tie. There can't be a three-way tie with BAL, PIT and HOU. BAL still holds first tiebreaker over HOU. The Texans need BAL to lose again and PIT to win that division.

Assuming the Texans win out....

A NE loss to either MIA or BUF will guarantee the Texans the #1 spot.   Even in BAL wins out, the Texans would have the tiebreakers over both teams (conference record).

If NE wins out they are the #1 seed... a BAL loss to either CLE or CIN will give the Texans the # 2 spot.

The Chronicle (of all people) has figured it out.

They have it figured out...except when the don't.

The Texans, Ravens, and Patriots could all win out and the Texans end up with the # 2 seed.  Strength of Victory isn't just looking at who you have left to play, but how the teams you have beaten finish out.

There are multiple scenarios (all very realistic by the way) that have the Texans passing the Patriots in SOV if they both win out.

Miami beats Buffalo (also could work with Vikings over Redskins)
Giants beat Jets
Giants beat Cowboys

another

Tampa beats Dallas
Atlanta beats NO

another

Miami beats Buffalo
Vikings beat Redskins
Giants beat Cowboys

http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2011/11/16/local-attorney-says-astros-move-to-al-violates-lease-agreement/

Quote
Citing provisions from a 2000 agreement that expires at the end of 2029, Yankowsky said the terms spell out that the home team — the Astros — be a National League franchise.

Article 1, Section 1.1 of the lease states that all capitalized terms in the lease have meanings assigned in a glossary of defined terms. One of the key provisions, Yankowsky said, comes in Article 5, Section 5.1 defining “Permitted Uses” of Minute Maid as including “exhibition, presentation and broadcasting of Baseball Home Games and activities related thereto.”

The Glossary of Defined Terms classifies “Baseball Home Games” as “any major league baseball game in which the Team as the host Team for its opponent (i.e. the Team takes the field in the first half of each inning and bats in the last half of each inning of such baseball game).” Team, as defined by the Glossary, is “the major league baseball team owned by the tenant pursuant to the rights granted to it as a National League franchise under the Franchise, currently named the Houston Astros Baseball Club.” Franchise, as defined in the lease, is “the Team issued by the National League.”

“In the simplest form, what this means, in my judgment, is come opening day of 2013, the Sports Authority can refuse to let them play because it’s not a permitted use of the stadium,” Yankowsky said. “They can quite simply lock the doors and say, ‘No, it’s not a permitted use.’ The play of Major League Baseball games, by definition, are limited to games in which a National League team is the home team.”

If only we had some lawyers around here that could make some sense of this...

Cash Consideration of $8M (roughly half of Oswalt’s remaining 2010 salary plus buyout)

Astros Receive:

1B Jon Singleton
P JP Happ
P Scott Mathieson
OF Anthony Gose

From a Philly Phansite   linkage...http://www.thegoodphight.com/2010/5/24/1484067/phillies-prospect-roundup

Quote
Jonathan Singleton, 1B-L, Lakewood: Taken one round behind Colvin in last year's draft, Singleton is doing everything in his power to surpass him (and plenty of others) in prospect status. An 8-for-20 week brought the 18-year old's triple slash line up to .378/.478/.703 (in 46 PA), with fantastic plate discipline -- 17.4% BB, 24.3% K -- to boot. He's going to cool off at some point, but the strike zone control is for real, and the power (3 HR, .325 ISO) is coming along earlier than might be expected, making Singleton a prospect with serious helium right now.

Anthony Gose, OF-L, Clearwater: Gose keeps chugging along, plate discipline be damned.  He had a hit in every game this week save for yesterday, with the 10-for-30 week boosting his May averages to a solid .283/.347/.424.  He's still struggling to control the strike zone -- with a 5.5% BB and 26.2% K thus far on the season -- but at least his May (8.0% BB, 26.0% K) has been a touch better than his April (3.1% BB, 26.3% K) in that regard.  Another area that could use some substantial improvement is his base stealing: 19 swipes in 31 attempts (a 61.3% success rate) is disappointing for a guy with Gose's speed.

Scott Mathieson, RHP, Lehigh Valley: Mathieson is officially at the "biding his time" stage.  After surrendering just 1 hit in 2 innings this week while inducing 3 whiffs, he's sporting a 2.47 FIP and 23-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20.2 innings. I can't imagine he wouldn't be a help to the big league pen at this point, but the Phillies are content to wait for an opening; if I were Bill Conlin (aka king of the world), I'd explore a deal with the Angels to send David Herndon down to hone his slider, and haul Mathieson up so the oft-injured righthander isn't wasting any more bullets in the minors.

It is not to be confused with a Purpura Platter, which has got a sampling of items that are being considered for the main menu.  The only problem is they bring it out to your table and then trade it for someone elses overpriced/half eaten steak.  You get to pay the bill for the steak.

My Dad's favorite position player was Craig Reynolds.  His favorite pitcher was Nolan Ryan.  He had a tendancy to more root for guys from the area.  I don't know which of the two he would have considered his favorite.  Anybody from Pennsylvania (his home state) or Texas was money in his book.

I picked Terry Puhl as my "guy" as a kid in the late 70s.  After a few seasons of hanging out by the home team's dugout, I was finally able to get his autograph as an 11 year old on my overly oiled glove.  (Which he pointed out.)  I only had a ball point pen at the time and the sig was really hard to see.  I then, in my pre-adolescent wisdom, tried to trace over the autograph in marker so I could see it better.

Unfortunately, I pulled a Fredia and wrote P-u-l-h...

D'OH!

BCS DECLARES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II
US Ranked 4th

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

"Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work--including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule--our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking."

Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated "The US only had two major victories--Japan and Germany. The computer models, unlike humans, aren't influenced by head-to-head contests--they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event."

German Chancellor Adolph Hitler said "Yes, we lost to the US; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks." Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn 'style points' to enhance Germany's rankings. Hitler protested "Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces."

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented " France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2."

Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines.

She has opine against the whole idea because it was a well known, worse kept secret that Houston and Sheets were going to talk about bringing him aboard.  She fears his injury history and feels that it would be sunken cost (aka: she has the same opinion about Kaz Matsui).  On the part of Houston, they are interested in Sheets, however the conversations have been just the kicking the tires type of talks.  Sheets is going to have to weigh what offers will realistically come his way based on his history, so Houston is in no hurry to rush to sign the young man.  In fact, I would think that Sheets may find himself in the same boat as Kyle Lohse did a few years back... waiting for a gig because no one was going to give him what he wanted.  The team that times it right will probably make a similar Lohse deal with Sheets unless another team panics and offers too much, too soon.

Sheets, on his part, would like to land here in Houston but won't sacrifice market value until he knows what said market value might be.  Right now, he only knows what he would want and not what the market will pay for his services.  IMHO, Sheets won't sign early with anyone.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Sheets accepted the Brewers offer of arbitration.  He made 12,125,000 in 2008 and will be hard pressed to sign a multi year deal IMO. He could ask in the 14-15 million dollar range this year and have a legitimate shot of getting it.  It could be very similar to what Maddux did with the Braves back in 2003.

Talk Zone / Tales from the "lost" season
« on: August 10, 2007, 08:35:23 am »

As most of you know my son Jarrett has battled through numerous medical challenges... open heart surgeries, a tracheostomy, and  cancer.  By God’s grace he has beaten them all.  At several points during these times, I always had a vision of taking him to his first Astros game.   It was a milestone of sorts that I knew in my heart I would be able to do with him.  That memorable night finally came back on May 18th vs. the Rangers.

In all the games I went to in the Dome growing up, I never once caught a foul ball. Never even came close. Ten rows was about as close as I ever came.   I was hopeful we could get one hit our way, but didn't really expect anything. Our seats were in the 1st row of section 313 right on the rail. In the bottom of the 1st, Lamb fouled one up right toward us. The ball came right to me and I had it in my hands. Then I got "Bartmaned". A forty-something guy with a glove lunged about four seats over, smacked the back of my hands and knocked the ball out down to the field boxes below. Isn't it a man law that no one over the age of 12 is allowed to bring a glove to the game? Seriously.

Then in the 8th inning, Lamb came to bat again. He sent another one up toward our section, this time a little to our left. Jarrett was sitting on my lap and the ball caromed off of the guy two seats over and landed right in my hands. Our section was cheering because they knew we had gotten jobbed by Bartman. I handed the ball to Jarrett and was overjoyed because he gotten a ball at his first game. The guy who the ball had rebounded off of asked reached out to shake my hand and I turned toward him...then I heard the gasps and groans.   The guy’s girlfriend shouted “He threw it back!”

Yes, Jarrett had thrown the ball back.

It landed back down in the field boxes, much to the confusion of the masses below. I guess he had been to too many of his sister's basketball games. He always tries to get the ball when it goes out of bounds so he can throw it back to the ref.   I felt a mixture of joy/loss that I have never felt at a ballgame before. Everyone in the section was laughing and we joined in. Jarrett was all smiles.

Now that I have had some time to think about it, I wouldn't change a thing about that the way things happened. If we had kept the ball the story would have ended there. The ball would have ended up on a shelf, or been played with and lost. This way, the memory of the night is what I will carry forever.   I later found out from some of the guys at the guys at work that they showed us on TV a couple of times.

This season I have been able to take two of my other sons to their first ballgames.  I now get to sit on the couch at night as the boys put on their plastic Astros helmets and race around the living room practicing their slides and using any long object within reach as bat.
I have the joy of watching them become Astro fans.  I had to put on the Oswalt/Zambrano game I had TIVOed because they would not accept the fact that the Astros were not playing last night.

But I guess none of this matters because the Astros aren't good this year.

Wouldn't the fact that Biggio has been wearing the pin in spring training for many years and no wave of copycatting has occurred to date undermine this premise?  In fact, since so few of the games in ST are televised and  attendance is much lower at the games, I would think that only a small pool of people know about it.

And you would think it would enter their mind this violation will go away after Biggio chooses to retire, which is certainly in the near future.

EGGSZACTLY!  There is a place for common sense and case by case evaluation by the MLB before they open their mouths (or at least one person opens said mouth) and sticks the entire foot, ankle and knee joint.  Had someone, anyone just spent a moment or two to *evaluate* the situation, they would've just let it go.

Instead, they reacted to a rule and that will sometimes lead to the wrong... very wrong... opinion.  If we lose the ability to evaluate and judge correctly, we lose the ability to just flat out think for ourselves.  If I were walking past a burning office building and the only path left for me to try and rescue a person trapped inside were to run through the manicured lawn, I'd do it.

Even if there were a sign stating I should "Keep Off The Lawn... NO EXCEPTIONS!".  Silly of me to even entertain beyond a half a nano-second the validity of the rule over the situation at hand.

Common sense is not all that common anymore.  Especially in the MLB front office.

« on: September 01, 2006, 11:48:40 am »
Hey gang,

There is a high probability that I will be relocating from San Antonio to the Houston area. My new job would be around the 610-I10 interchange on the East side of town (around the McCarty exit).

any ideas as to good places to live?...

I have 5 kids so a family oriented community is a must.

We currently live in the Hill Country on about an acre and a half, and we would prefer to live in a "country" setting vs. the city, but I don't know if that is a reasonble expectation given the location of the job.

Please give me your opinions of where to start looking!

thanks,

Stan

Couldn't get the radio feed at work because the Astros were pre-empted for the Silver Stars of the WNBA.

San Antonio radio s-u-x.

I was relegated to "watching" gamecast.

I must admit, it was pretty freakin' awesome to see strike after strike pop up on the screen.

Hey guys I'm going into my Senior year of High Schoo, The Navy contacted me today and asked if I'd come in for a meeting tomorrow & I said sure. I have no intention of joining but he insisted that I at least see what they have to offer. I know going to Annapolis and getting an Ivy League education is very prestigious but as of right now that's not what I want to do. Has any one of you guys ever sat down and talked with a recruiter- If so what have the had to say? Or do any of you have experience in the Navy w/ college and stuff.

Thanks, Joe

I haven't been around for a while and just caught this thread.  I went to Annapolis back in the late 80s early 90s.  If you have any specific questions about the experience send me a PM or reply in this thread.  I'd be glad to help you in any way I can.

Most of the information that has been given is pretty accurate.

You need a nomination from a Congressman (U.S. not State).  They have a limited amount of Serivce Academy spots that they can have at any one time.  It used to be five.  Your best chance is to try your local representative rather than a Senator.  You are competing with less people that way.

Plebe year is tough.  Really tough.  Expect to take anywhere from 18-21 hours per semester not including required extra curricular activities.

innursting facts...

-You only rate sitting on the first 3 inches of your chair.
-All meals are eaten square.
-You only get three chews and a swallow when eating.
-You have to "chop" (running with your knees parallel to the deck and your elbows in at your side) anywhere you go in Bancroft hall. (the dorm)
-You have to square every corner and shout either "Go Navy Sir, or Beat Army Sir".

-You have five basic responses...
1) the correct answer
2) "Yes, Sir" or "No Sir"
3) "Aye Aye Sir"
4) "I'll find out sir"
5) or "No excuse sir"
never offer any excuses or explanations or you will be labeled a "sea lawyer." (no offense to any of the regular lawyers around here"

Never under any circumstances bet your ass on anything.  If you lose, you have to keep and "Ass Log" to document whenever you sit down.  You have to request permission to use your ass from the person that owns it.

There are about a million and a half more things.  Let me know if you want to hear some of them.

Pierzynki baited Barret with the plate slap.  He was asking for it.

Barrett said he didn't see the plate slap.  Said when he got up he saw Prezhinskrikski heading towards him and he reacted.

Prezhejinsnkski said that he got up to go get his helmet when Barrett bearhugged him and said "I didn't have the ball BITCH!" and then slugged him.

Quite a lot, if you believe that Garner fella.

From Yahoo
The Link

"He's flying open," Garner said. "What that means is when your front shoulder goes out too soon, your ball tends to flatten out. Fastballs don't have the same finish on them and more importantly your slider doesn't have the same break on it that it normally does. So that's been his major issue."

Thanks for the continued insight Jim.  That's why I come here.

_____________________________

September 2nd, 1920

With the last two games rained out, fans get their money's worth in Pittsburgh as the Pirates and Reds, battling to determine 3rd place, play the century's only tripleheader. Starting at noon, the Reds win the first, 13?4, to clinch 3rd place. The Reds win game two as well, 7?3, with a number of players at odd positions: Reds put catcher Ivy Wingo at 2B, with pitchers Bressler, Ruether, Coumbe, and Eller at field positions. The Pirates take the finale 6?0, called after six innings because of darkness. The only "tribill" played this century is played in five hours. Clyde Barnhart, who made his major league debut ten days earlier, doubles in the first two games, and singles in the 3rd, the only player to hit in all three games.

This looks like a job for Spack!

From the manifesto...

Spack was a star in the the old Constitutional Brotherhood Base Ball Association, a rival major league in the 1890s. Spack once pitched all 27 innings of a triple-header. A line drive broke his right collar bone in the seventh inning of Game 3, but he managed to finish the day with his left arm.
