We're nearing the logical break off point for some/many of us.  If im going to stop following the Astros, stopping by here becomes less nessisary, if not downright frustrating.  Sad that such a seemingly insignificant event may implode a "community" but that seems to be a very possible outcome.

Anyone else feeling torn about this?

Yeah I don't know how anyone could say this isn't a 10, unless they want to say it's a 20.

Yahoo has a separate page posted for every single athlete that received "benefits", detailing what was provided, backing that up with receipts, corroborating those stories with other eyewitness accounts, etc etc.

Usually stories leak out and there's enough plausible deniability to cloud the issue and maybe chuck up enough noise that people never fully grasp the scope. This is a fucking encyclopedia of corruption, with receipts.

Beer and Queso / 401k Advice
« on: July 27, 2011, 09:20:04 am »
Anyone moving their 401ks to something safe for the next few weeks?  Im in a 2040 fund which is obviously a bit risky, so I'm thinking of moving everything to a low yield/low risk fund** until this all plays out.  It doesnt seem like the upside is there for when this gets worked out just before the deadline (the market is already acting like they are confident a deal will be reached) but the risk is pretty substantial on the miniscule chance that this gets ugly.

Thoughts?

**The irony being that in my plan, that is a US govt securities/bond fund

The NBA had already lost me with their blackouts of Austin, but I still wish I could have seen Yao win it all with the Rockets.

Amazing to think he's only 30.  With the star power he has in China, I'm guessing this isn't the last we'll hear from him.

If you're considering a new TV I highly recommend this Visio.

I'm blown way by the 2d picture, excellent built in speakers, super light and thin, built in wifi with netflix etc, and of course 3d.  I wouldn't have been looking for 3d, but at less than $700 for 42", it was too good to pass up.

currently watching the mavs/thunder game on espn3d.  It's actually not as "gimmicky" as I thought it would be.  It really does have a live feel to it!  I could see this being the preferred way of watching a game.

The glasses are simple and cheap.  Same ones they've been using in theaters recently

Time to hunt down some 3d ps3 games now...

It may be difficult to find.  I went to three walmarts before finding it after giving up on amazon who kept pushing my delivery date back.

Beer and Queso / Indoor Turkey Fryer
« on: December 12, 2010, 01:51:15 pm »
I just got this last week and took it for a spin the first time today.  I've had fried turkey a few times when people brought it in to work, but never hot and fresh.  This was easily the best bird I've ever had!  Unbelievably moist and a ton of flavor.

As for the fryer itself, works just as advertised.  About 30 mins to heat the oil and easy to use basket to drop the bird in and pull it out 45 mins later.  Another 15 mins to cool and carve and we were eating an hour and a half after I started this morning.  Clean up is easy (ill drain the oil tomorrow to reuse) so I can see us using this frequently for cornish hens, pork chops, etc.

Might make a good Christmas gift if you're still looking...

Beer and Queso / First Guitar and Bass Suggestions
« on: November 29, 2010, 07:44:55 pm »
Yeah, yeah, we've done this before...

I've been a percussionist/drummer for 25 years now and want to try something new.  Asking my wife to get me a guitar and bass for my birthday and Christmas.  I'd eventually like to be able to start recording individual tracks and mixing them.

Looking through some of the past threads, I saw Pete and HH talking about PRS.  These look awesome, but there are way to many options for me to even begin to decipher.  Using this as a baseline, anything stand out as being problematic for a beginner?

I don't know where to begin on bass guitars... how about this Spector Legend?  I'm starting to get suspicious about musicansfriend reviews.  Everything is 4-5 stars.

Finally, what should I be looking for in a small amp?  Could I get away with just one for both guitars, or do they require different specs?  I don't need anything crazy loud, but it needs to sound good enough to record later.

Beer and Queso / Credit Card Points
« on: August 27, 2010, 05:53:48 pm »
This may sound stupid, but for 15 years I've paid little to no attention to the points programs on my credit cards.  We got a Discover card a few years ago to take advantage of a 0% offer, and of course they cram that down your throat so it was easy to see and take credit for the points we accumulated on it (I always just do the balance credit).  But, for our other cards, the points weren't so obvious, and frankly I never went looking for them... until today.  HOLY SHIT!  I had no idea what was building up on these accounts.  Part of me is ecstatic to cash them in, but then again I feel like a complete dumbass for letting the card companies sit on my money for so long!

So, if you were like me and not paying attention, be sure to log into your credit card accounts and see what you may have accumulated in points!

Beer and Queso / Golf Club Fitting
« on: August 09, 2010, 09:12:51 pm »
Went to Golf Tec today to redeem a gift card I recieved last December.  I've reached a point where I'm overloaded on swing thoughts/theory, so I've been avoiding taking any more lessons and just learning while I play.  I just saw that they do an 'unbiased' club fitting, though, so I thought I'd give that a shot.

I bought some Callaway Big Birtha Fusions 2-3 years ago and let the Golfsmith sales guy fit me.  He suggested and ordered 2 degree upright and 1" (I think) addl length.  I'm pretty sure I liked them when I first got them, but I've really not felt good about my irons for a long time now.

I walk into my hour-long fitting session and start taking some warm up swings.  Not more than 5 swings in, the instructor grabs my club, puts tape on it and has me hit off a lie board.  SON OF A BITCH.  Everything off the heal.  Lie is right, but the clubs are only 1/2" longer, rather than an inch.  I've been swinging and compensating for short irons for 2-3 years!  If you ever take the time to invest in a proper fitting, be sure to check the clubs once you recieve them...

I liked the Golf Tec setup a lot, though it's pretty damn expensive.  In the fitting, besides the now obvious length issue, he showed me how my clubs were producing far too much spin and put me on several different clubs that each reduced it by 800+ rpm (6 iron).  I've also got an issue to address where I'm casting the club head before I get to the ball sapping power and creating too much loft, which the numbers show, and the video confirmed.

I enjoyed telling the wife that her $100 birthday gift just resulted in me buying some new clubs!  Looking for the UPS truck in 10 days...

I don't remember recognizing the full magnitude of this in school, but thank you Nova for pointing it out again.

Our sun is just one of 100 Billion stars in our galaxy.  (stop, comprehend.. at least to the extent a human can really comprehend a Billion)

There are 100+ Billion more such galaxies in the universe, each with 100 Billion stars like ours.

That's more stars than there are grains of sand in every desert and beach on earth.

So, all things considered, that 0-7 start is not too big a deal.

They've been a lot of fun to watch so far.  Yes, there have been a few duds, but for the most part it's a young, fast, scrappy team that seems to be surprising everyone they play.

And tonight they're rocking the old red and gold unis.

Interesting the multiple comments on spin.  I didn't realize batters paid that much attention to the spin they placed on a ball.  In golf, backspin is the killer of distance, but for Bagwell, the intentional introduction of backspin to his hits is what allowed him to hit further than he had in the minors

Many years ago (perhaps 10?) there was a brilliant website where the author got a hold of some Star Trek Convention photos and applied his own captions (akin to mulletsgalore.com).  For the life of me, I'm unable to find any remnants of it without better search terms (too many Star Trek Convention Geek Photos sites on the wrong side of the joke).  Does anyone else recall this?
