Talk Zone / Postseason tickets
« on: September 22, 2019, 11:40:29 am »
I got an email from the front office this morning informing me that I"ve been selected for an opportunity to purchase ALDS tickets. Starts Tuesday morning at 9am. Not having done this before, what should I expect? Is it just a free-for-all on the web site?

I got here a bit late. For some reason, Altuve is leading off, but he did his best George impression and stroked a lead-off homer. Anybody know where Springer is? Seems odd that he'd be getting the night off after an off day.

Somebody *has* to get a fucking hit when it counts. Yordan and Correa are the latest failures, leaving the bases loaded in the top of the 1st.

Talk Zone / Joke of a contest in London
« on: June 29, 2019, 03:08:00 pm »
If Manfred was hoping to showcase actual baseball in London, he has failed. At the moment, the score is 15-6 in the top of 5th, and the Yankees have the bases loaded. There have been at least 11 pitchers so far. The starters lasted 1.0 innings, combined. There have been errors, wild pitches, passed balls, pulled hamstrings, lousy throws. Center field is a daunting 385 feet away. Fox is reduced to talking about those fucking 2' long Boomstick heart attack hot dogs. Well done.

I wonder if they're letting them carry extended pitching staffs for this little escapade. If not, tomorrow's game could take eight hours and result in about 40 runs. Shit, today's game may reach 40.

Oh good, there's two more. It's now 17-6 Yankees, 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th.

McHugh looked pretty sharp and struck out the side, but he still took 25 pitches to get out of the 1st. Wasn't helped by Lindor's AB, in which he fouled off a lot of pitches in a 10-pitch AB. And he "hit" Ramirez with one of his patented back-foot sliders.

Well, I was slacking the first couple of days, so I'll try to be a bit more serious about the effort today. To that end, I'm cracking open the first of the sixer of Karbach Crawford Bock that my wonderful wife bought for me. I hope that it steadies Diaz's nerves.

My wife and I are going to our niece's wedding in Chattanooga in April, and we're going to fly into Nashville a little early and spend a day and change there before heading southeast. Does anybody have recommendations of noteworthy things that we shouldn't miss?

Beer and Queso / A Star is Born

My wife and I went to see this Wednesday evening, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not a big fan of the Lady Gaga schtick, but stripped of that and just showing off her singing (and acting), she shined. Cooper was great, too, in that he made you want to make his character stop the madness. Heartily recommended. Still trying to figure out if Cooper was actually playing his guitar parts.

Talk Zone / TJ surgery for Gregorius
« on: October 12, 2018, 03:32:11 pm »
Wow. From
The team believes it was during Game 2 of the American League Division Series last Saturday in Boston when Gregorius injured his right elbow. The throw that did it came in the seventh inning of a game New York ultimately won 6-2.

On the play, Gregorius hustled into the outfield to field an Ian Kinsler double that ricocheted hard off Fenway Park's Green Monster and out of Yankees left fielder Andrew McCutchen's reach. Once he picked up the ball, Gregorius threw it back into the infield, where it was cut off as Boston's second run of the game scored.

"Post-game that day, he was in the trainer's room," general manager Brian Cashman said. "Based on his dialogue and the feeling he felt on the tweak there, on that throw was where he pinpointed it."

The Birds have been mathematically eliminated from the postseason. On August 11th. It's apparently the earliest a team has been  eliminated since divisional play began. (Information gleaned from telecast of Yankees@Rangers, so if it's wrong, I"m blaming them.)

Yadi Molina takes a foul tip to the groin and has to undergo emergency surgery for a traumatic hematoma. He'll miss at least a month. I can't even imagine how much that must hurt.

Jacob deGrom goes on the 10-day DL because of a hyperextended elbow.

The walk-fest continues. Keuchel just walked three in a row after a lead-off single, and the A's now lead 2-1. He's certainly not been getting any help from the ump, but damn this is frustrating.

The US has had the complete run of play (including a foul against Altidore that should have been a penalty), and yet Costa Rica has a 1-0 lead because the defense fell asleep for 30 seconds. Very frustrating.

Talk Zone / Catch of the year?

I can't find a link yet, but I'm sure one will show up soon. The Cleveland CF made an amazing diving catch headed straight back toward the fence to rob KC's Cain of extra bases. Keep your eyes open for a replay.

ESPN pulls the plug. Not really a surprise, I guess, but I'll miss guys like Barnwell, Keri, and Lowe, at least until they land somewhere else. There's now little reason to use the ESPN site as anything more than a scoreboard.

Beer and Queso / Houston bar recommendations?
« on: September 14, 2015, 07:03:20 pm »
A friend is going to the Houston area with his girlfriend for five or six days, spending the first few at ZaZa, and looking for things to do and eat. I've pointed him at a variety of eating places in the general area, but I'm way out of touch on the bar scene. He was hoping to find a stretch something like 6th street here in Austin where he could wander from place to place, maybe bump into some music, and just discover which places he likes. Anything like that? If not, anything particularly good that he should check out?

Beer and Queso / iPhone 5S bluetooth volume
« on: July 31, 2015, 07:55:49 pm »
I recently upgraded from an ancient iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5S, which has been a nice improvement except for one thing: if I'm using the iPhone as a bluetooth source for the car audio, the volume is much lower than when I use the radio or CD sources. This wasn't a problem with the old phone, so I suspect it's simply a matter of some difference in settings, but I haven't figured it out yet. Everything I've seen online says to make sure that the EQ and Sound Check options are off, and they are, but the problem persists.

Has anybody else seen this problem and, more importantly, conquered it?

Beer and Queso / RIP Murphy the cat
« on: April 25, 2015, 09:15:17 pm »
Our 7-year-old tabby started moving sluggishly Thursday and slept on my lap all evening, then slept all day yesterday, and then was out on the porch this morning with really rapid, shallow breathing. Took her to the vet, who said her lungs were filling with fluid, basically feline congestive heart failure. Probably started to be serious a few weeks ago, but cats simply don't exhibit symptoms until it's pretty much too late. There were things we could have done to keep her going for a couple of weeks or maybe a month or two, but there was no reversing the real problem, and treatment was going to be expensive. For the last 35+ years our household has always had at least one cat in it, so it's not like we haven't been through it before, but damn it's hard to look into those trusting eyes while the shot is being administered.

At least she went out with an Astros' win.

The Texans just signed him for four more years and $32mm, with $20mm guaranteed? Why would you do that? I mean, he was a little better last year, but that's a pretty low bar. I don't get it.

Beer and Queso / NFL Playoffs
« on: January 03, 2015, 07:10:57 pm »
That Carolina-Arizona game was one of the worst displays of offensive football I've ever seen. Yes, both defenses are good, but those offenses are abysmal. If Carolina winds up playing Seattle next weekend they'll lose by 30 points.

Talk Zone / Padres get busy
« on: December 19, 2014, 09:12:43 am »
They've acquired Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Justin Upton, and Derek Norris so far (and maybe others that I've missed). I'd love to see them take down the Dodgers.

Talk Zone / Stanton
« on: September 11, 2014, 09:04:28 pm »
Yikes: Giancarlo Stanton just took a fastball to the head. It looked like it might have deflected off of his hand/wrist first; if so, that probably took a little bit of the steam off of it, but he was still taken off the field on a stretcher. Hope it's not too serious.

Talk Zone / This stupid blocking-the-plate rule has to go
« on: August 13, 2014, 08:38:07 pm »
Jeez, go look at the ridiculous call in today's Giants-White Sox game. It's especially annoying considering that the Astros didn't get the call on a seemingly much more clear-cut block over the weekend. But none of the runners should have been called safe: not the Giants runner today, not the Astros runner today, or the guy last week who was called safe even though the throw beat him to the plate by 15 feet. This rule is a travesty! It's a sham! It's a mockery! Why, it's a traveshamockery!

Talk Zone / Who is working the Rangers voodoo doll?
« on: June 08, 2014, 04:59:37 pm »
If it were anybody other than the Rangers (or maybe the Yankees), I would probably feel sorry for them, but it isn't and I don't. Now Moreland is down for three months or more with ankle surgery, so they're down to their third option for 1st base. Awwwww...

Beer and Queso / Darvish

Loses his perfecto on an Astro-esque pas de deux on a pop-up to RF. Now he has walked a couple, but he still has the no-hitter going in the top of the 8th.

Hopefully that's enough to jinx him.

Several of us were discussing this over on the Bus Ride, but there may be people who don't frequent that part of the site and missed it. OKC comes to RR for a 5-game series starting tonight. Drew Corleone, Sphinx Drummond and I went to one of the games last time OKC was in town, and Springer did not disappoint, crushing two homers and a triple. The Braves have lost three outfielders in 24 hours: Shreefer did something to himself last night, BJ Upton wrecked himself diving for a line drive in the first inning tonight, and Justin Upton hurt himself trying to beat out a ground ball in the seventh inning.

If it weren't the Braves, I'd feel sorry for them.

If you see this before the match is over, check out the US-Costa Rica World Cup qualifier on ESPN. I believe it's in Colorado, and it's snowing like a son-of-a-bitch, a nice, wet snow so that it's really accumulating on the field. I'm reasonably sure that the Costa Ricans are unaccustomed to conditions like this. US leads 1-0 at the half.

My wife and I are headed down to Houston for final preparations for our daughter's wedding on Saturday. Doesn't seem like very long ago that we brought her home from the hospital, or sent her off to school for the first time, or took her down to college.

As far as I know, Neil's daughter isn't also getting married on the same day, which will make it one of the first milestone dates that the two girls haven't shared.

If any of you have any pull with the rain gods (das?), please ask them to hold off on the thunderstorms Saturday afternoon. I'll try not to screw up the toast.

How the fuck does that happen?

The last thing I was doing before the weirdness started was editing various .rc files to figure out which one was doing what to me, and I was editing them with emacs, so I clearly could use the 'e' key at that point. And then the shit started.

Beer and Queso / Kevin Na turning into Steve Blass
« on: May 12, 2012, 03:05:23 pm »
This is really getting painful to watch. He addresses his ball, then takes a little waggle, and then goes through 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 half takeaways. Then he sometimes just walks away and comes back and does it all over again, and sometimes he actually hits the ball. The brain can be very mysterious.

I've been a fan of his ever since last year's tournament in San Antonio when he hooked a drive over in some horribly overgrown mesquite/whatever and wound up taking a 19 (not a typo) on the hole. He never lost his shit, he hung around after the round and answered questions, and he generally acted like a grown-up, which couldn't have been easy under those circumstances.

« on: February 29, 2012, 02:01:07 pm »
I picked up some CDs at Waterloo on Monday, and one of them is causing me some grief. When I load it in the machine (a Windows 7 box), iTunes fails to recognize it. When I look at the drive using Explorer, it's simply recognized as an "Audio CD", with "Track 01", "Track 02", etc (and all of those tracks are .cda files, although I have no idea if that's unusual since I rarely look at audio discs). It'll play if I sic the Windows Media Player on it, but iTunes won't do a thing with it, which is preventing me from ripping it to my iPod. Has anybody else seen this problem and overcome it?

Beer and Queso / NAS experience?
« on: February 09, 2012, 09:56:06 am »
I'm looking at NAS options to try to centralize the backup story for various home computers. Requirements:

1. Relatively cheap.
2. DLNA capable, so I can stream stuff from it.
3. Time Machine capable, so that we can use it to back up Macs (all running Lion now).
4. Also need to back up Windows (Win7 and XP Pro) machines.

The Synology DS211j seems like a good candidate, but like everything else in the universe it has its share of both 5-star and 1-star reviews. I can probably fill it with a pair of 2T drives for a total in the $600 range, which is acceptable.

I don't know how many people noticed, but the winning pitcher in last night's Yankee victory over the Rangers was Brian Gordon, the ex-Round Rock HS, ex-Round Rock Express, ex-outfielder, ex-reliever, turned starting pitcher. A week ago he was pitching in the Phillies' AAA org, but he had a contract that let him out if any ML team wanted to sign him, and the Yankees picked him up while trying replenish their staff.

I was under the impression that last night was his first ML action, but that's incorrect: he apparently had three relief appearances with the Rangers in 2008. Either way, it's a nice payoff for a guy who's been toiling in minor league ball since 1997 (he's now 32).

More here.

ETA: Duh, he wasn't the winning pitcher, because the Yankees won in extra innings long after he was gone. But I'm still happy for the guy.

Beer and Queso / Windows XP detox advice sought
« on: May 28, 2011, 10:56:55 am »
My wife has been visiting a bunch of new web sites lately, and apparently one or more of them weren't clean. So now our desktop machine (Windows XP SP2+) is infected with something. Immediate symptoms that I've noticed:

1. svchost goes crazy (continually between 85% and 100% of CPU). I used "tasklist /svc" to find out what services that instance was hosting, and of course it's got about two dozen, including several obvious network-related ones. Killing it kills all network access.

2. You can use google to present a list of search results, but most of the presented links, if followed, wind up redirecting you to one of a bunch of other off-brand search sites. Copying the google-presented link and following it directly sometimes works, but sometimes even that gets redirected. I assume that the browser (Firefox 3.something) has been infected with something that is doing on-the-fly URL modification. I can probably fix this problem by simply uninstalling the browser and installing a brand new copy. Presumably there's some way to export my bookmarks before I remove the old browser.

There may be other things going on, but the svchost CPU hog makes it so painful to do anything that it's hard to tell. I get a few minutes of peace after a reboot, but at some point something wakes up and then I'm screwed.

Does anybody know what the preferred tools are for diagnosing these problems? This wasn't exactly the way I intended to spend Memorial Day weekend, but I guess it's part of the fun of owning a computer.

Beer and Queso / Playoff OT rule change
« on: January 07, 2011, 10:42:12 am »
Here's an interesting article about the strategic considerations for onside kicks in overtime given the new OT rules:

So Crazy It Just Might Work

I never knew the exactly language of the rule, but this quote

As the site Pro Football Talk explained on Thursday, the overtime rules stipulate that "each team is only guaranteed the opportunity to possess the ball."

raises a different question for me. Imagine that Team A elects to receive the kick opening kick of the OT. They head down the field, but at some point Team B intercepts a pass. During the interception return, the returner fumbles the ball, and Team A recovers it.

If Team A is in field goal range after the fumble recovery and immediately kicks a field goal, does that end the game? I would guess so, since Team B gained possession with the interception. But I'm no referee.

I'm headed to Colorado Friday to watch the first four days of the Juco World Series. This year is particularly interesting, because College of Southern Nevada qualified from one of the regions, so I'll get to see at least a couple of Bryce Harper's games (who apparently finished the last two games of his region tournament 12-13 with 4 home runs).

  Iowa Western Community College
  Faulkner State Community College
  San Jacinto College-North

My mother spends a good part of the year in rural Wisconsin, and the AT&T cell coverage there is non-existent, which means her iPhone is little more than a paperweight unless she drives into town. AT&T has evidently released their own femtocell gadget (essentially, a mini cell tower that hooks to your internet connection and passes packets on to AT&T's network that way), and they're charging $150 for the thing. While it's annoying to give even more money to AT&T, it's better than the currently available alternatives. IF THE THING WORKS.

Does anybody here have experience with these things? AT&T's device certainly isn't the only one, so I'm hoping that somebody has used one before and can expound on their general viability.

Beer and Queso / New router blues
« on: April 30, 2010, 08:10:02 pm »
Last night I swapped out my old Linksys 11g access point/router for a new Cisco/Linksys 11n one. The supposedly idiot-proof setup software wasn't, so it took a little while to pick up the pieces. But after a couple of hours I got things set up so that the network is WPA2-enabled, and all three machines at home have network access.

That's the good news. The bad news is that none of the machines can see one another, which is tough on my file backups and shared printing. I can look at the DHCP client table on the router and see all of the machines, but if I try to ping them by IP address I always fail. At least the problem is symmetrical: pings from all three machines fail. This stuff all worked fine up til 6:30pm last night when I swapped out the router, so it's pretty obvious that the setup software changed some settings somewhere, but I'm at a loss to figure out what.

Has anybody else encountered a similar problem before?

Beer and Queso / Laptop advice
« on: April 14, 2010, 01:17:49 pm »
Another hard drive bites the dust. Everything I care about is backed up, so this is more of a nuisance than anything else. Ordinarily I'd just go get a new drive, re-install everything, and get on with my life. But this machine is now close to five years old and it uses an old PATA IDE drive that isn't widely available anymore. So I'm looking at this as a signal that I should maybe look at a new laptop.

I use this thing mainly for browsing and posting snarky comments to SnS, and for acting as my remote desktop when I'm working from home (which is often). I also do some local document creation and spreadsheet manipulation on it, and run some design/simulation code on it. So a gadget like the iPad is out, and a netbook seems like it may be on the bottom end of acceptable. The current machine is a Dell, but I don't know if their current offerings are any good or not. My main criterion is reliability: just like my cars, I want to know that when I go to use it it's going to work. I do not want to spend a lot of time maintaining the machine and its software; I get to do enough of that at work.

Has anybody else been in a similar situation recently? If so, is there any wisdom you'd like to share?

Beer and Queso / Front page wonky?
« on: December 16, 2009, 09:18:55 am »
I'm getting a pretty strange rendering of the front page, and I'm seeing the same results on four different machines. Basically, the top banner isn't rendering, and then the usual list of links below that banner isn't present at all. Layout of "Astros News" and "MLB Landscape" pieces on the right doesn't look correct either.

The status bar at the bottom of the browser always says "Transferring data from" or "Transferring data from <some flash provider>.com", so I'm assuming that the page hasn't ever actually finished rendering because it hasn't received all of its elements.

Is anybody else seeing the same thing, or is this an artifact of some connectivity problem on my end?

In this afternoon's Cubs-Cards game, McCarver said something like "because the slider is the easiest pitch to throw, many pitchers will fall back on that when they need to throw a strike" (this as Marmol was losing his shit). Now, I never pitched after 4th grade or so, so I don't really know anything about it except that I wasn't very good. But it seems to me that a) a fastball must be easier to throw than a slider, and b) if you're trying to throw a slider for a (non-swinging) strike, you're probably doing something wrong. Am I on drugs?

I'm no great fan of McGrady, but replacing him with Carter? Just say no.

The Nets are understandably worried about McGrady's injury history, so they've proposed another option. It's particularly noteworthy for being worse than any trade that's ever been proposed in here:

The Nets have countered with a proposal that would send Carter and Josh Boone to the Nets [sic] for a combination of Ron Artest, Shane Battier, Luther Head and Carl Landry.

Why not throw in Yao, Alston, and Scola, too? Think of the salary cap room that would free up!

I can easily see 5 more losses before the NCAAs (OU, one of the remaining OSU games, Kansas, Nebraska or A&M, and a conference tournament loss). And it's no sure thing that an 11-loss team that's played like crap in the second half even gets into the NCAA tournament.

The only silver lining that I see is that James has probably played his way out of the draft, so maybe he'll be back next year to try to prove that this year was an aberration.

Caple has a good article about closers. Two quotes I especially like:

Yet when Seattle was in the midst of losing 13 of 14 games in late August and early September to tumble from the wild-card lead to hopelessly out of playoff contention, Putz pitched only twice. So when the team was floundering at a make-or-break point of the season, its supposed best pitcher -- the league's alleged best reliever -- was of no help because the Mariners were not in official and proper "save situations."

That's because regardless of era, all stats point to this truth: The key is not who you have on the mound in the ninth but getting to the ninth with a lead.

Who do you think will prevail in the semis?

Germany vs Turkey: If I heard correctly, the intersection of the set of healthy Turks and the set of eligible Turks numbers 15, and that includes the third-string keeper. I think that the absence of so many front-line people will be fatal, especially when Ballack is granted his customary immunity by the referee. Turkeys' frenetic pace and persistence may get them a goal, but I expect the Germans to score three or more.

Spain vs Russia: Have Spain put their underachieving ways behind them? Can Russia play consistently like they did in the quarterfinal? I was very impressed by Torres in Spain's quarterfinal match (and surprised that Aragones substituted for him, but what do I know). I was equally impressed by Arshavin, and I have to think Spain's thrashing of Russia in group play was in large part due to Arshavin's absence. I have no idea who will win, but I expect it to be very entertaining.

6 innings, 3 hits, one run, no walks last night. Command looked good. The run came on a no-doubter over the RF fence. There were a couple of other deep shots that were hauled in on the track, but other than that Iowa didn't get much going.

Hines pitched the 8th. Jim's right: he's all arms and legs. He's also all over the place. It's probably scary batting against him.

Q almost ended the game by picking a guy off second. Umpire called him safe, which elicited a call I hadn't heard before from a guy near us: "Hey ump, bend over and use your good eye!"

Can the gun at the Dell be believed? It said Hernandez was bringing the fastball at 93-94 mph last night, at least in the early innings.

In 1993, six Houston pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter against the Yankees in Interleague Play. Roy Oswalt, Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel, and Billy Wagner united for the 8-0 victory.

Those guys have been around a lot longer than I realized.

Tonight I opened another bottle but poured it into a pint glass and let it sit a few minutes before I drank it. Big difference: it opened up a lot and tasted completely different.

Or maybe it was just the fact that the Astros were scoring gobs of runs.

Mets go to the 8th trailing 8-5 and score 5 in the top of the inning to take a 10-8 lead. Wagner comes in for the bottom of the 8th and gives up one run on a Burrell homer to make it 10-9. Mets go quietly in the top of the 9th, setting the stage for the bottom of the 9th. A lead-off single, fly out to CF, steals of 2nd and 3rd, a single, a steal of 2nd, and an intentional walk later, Utley singles to drive in the winning run and set off what must be a great shitstorm in New York.

This season has already given us 756 homers for Bonds, 600 homers for Sammy Sosa, 500 homers for Frank Thomas and Rodriguez and 300 wins for Tom Glavine, but don't put away the party hats just yet. Ken Griffey Jr., a player worthy of celebrating, is only 11 homers from 600. Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and Gary Sheffield are at 490, 489 and 478, respectively.

McCarver (after Sanchez makes a nice catch on a foul pop-up behind 3rd): "That's why LaRussa has Sanchez out there: he's so versatile that even though he's in an unfamiliar position, he can still make the play."  The fact that he played 65 games at 3rd in '05 and 99 games at 3rd in '06 evidently doesn't matter.

I headed out to the grocery store with the Cards and Brewers tied nuttin-nuttin.  Did my shopping, drove home, pulled in the garage, and remembered that the Cards were playing.  I'll just tune the old XM into the Cards game and see where it is, I says to myself.  Up comes the game, Brewers leading 2-0, bottom of the 8th, 2 outs, 1-2 count on Spiezio.  No telling how many people are on base.  Spiezio lines the ball into the right corner, and then the count starts: here comes Pujols (rats), here comes Rolen (RATS!), here comes Encarnacion (SHIT!), Spiezio into third.  Game (and season hopes?) over.

I apologize: I knew better than to turn that on.  Had I left it alone, we would probably be licking our chops over a Brewers 2-0 win.

Talk Zone / Cards' ERA
« on: September 29, 2006, 03:18:38 pm »
Just for grins, I went back and figured out the Cards' ERA for the last 10 days or so.  From Monday 9/18 on, they've collectively pitched 94.1 innings, allowing 57 runs (55 earned) and 11 homers.  That's an ERA of 5.25.

By pitcher:

Pitcher      IP    R  ER  HR    ERA
Carpenter  15.0   12  12   2   7.20
Flores      3.0    3   3   1   9.00
Hancock     4.0    4   4   0   9.00
Johnson     2.0    4   4   2  18.00
Kinney      6.1    0   0   0   0.00
Looper      3.1    4   3   0   8.10
Marquis     7.1    9   9   2  11.05
Narveson    4.1    3   3   1   6.23
Reyes      11.1    3   3   1   2.38
Sosa        4.2    1   1   1   1.93
Suppan     10.2    5   4   0   3.37
Thompson    6.1    1   1   0   1.42
Wainwright  4.0    3   3   0   6.75

It's not quite as hide-your-eyes bad as I had thought, but it's not wonderful either.  Take Kinney out of there and the ERA climbs to 5.63.

(BTW: is there something besides the code tag that I should use to make tables?)

Talk Zone / This guy needs to do a little more research...
« on: September 26, 2006, 12:58:43 pm »
In this article, the author argues that The Big Hurt might be the best hitter ever.  One of his arguments is Thomas's 1994 season:

If you concede nothing else to Frank, you need to give him 1994. In the modern, integrated era, it's the greatest 500-plus plate appearance season anyone's had.

Of course, someone else had an equally great season in that very same year.  With the exception of walks, Bagwell's numbers were at least the equivalent of Thomas's.  I suppose that you can argue that Bagwell didn't have 500 PAs (400 AB +  65 BB + ? sacs + at least one HPB), or that because he broke his hand he wouldn't have kept it up had the strike been averted.  But it's annoying that he's not even acknowledged.

Thomas had 44 more walks in that season, and that's probably enough to tilt the scales in Thomas's favor.  But even with those walks he only scored two more runs.  I don't remember old Comiskey as particularly hitter-friendly, but I doubt that it had near the effect on Thomas's numbers that the Dome had on Bagwell's.

Must stop grinding teeth now...

Talk Zone / Old-timer night at the Dell
« on: August 17, 2006, 09:32:28 am »
Went to the game last night, and who should appear on the mound for Iowa but Whitey himself: Wade Miller.  I wasn't paying real close attention, but I don't think he ever brought anything over 85 mph according to the Dell gun.  McEwing spanked two homers off of him, Round Rock won 6-3 thanks to 3 late runs off Iowa relievers.  Albers looked ok, but not great.  It was a grind-it-out night for him: 7 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO (I didn't realize he had that many SO until I read the box score).  He got into a few situations, and it was nice to see him work his way out of them.

Pie looks pretty talented, and I think the Cubs would be idiots to resign Pierre for next year.  Pie does look like he might be a bit of a dick (opinion based on some preening he did rounding the bases after a lead-off homer and the way he carries himself out in center between pitches), but that'll help him fit right in on the Cubs.

Surprisingly, there was no battery exchange table at the Dell Diamond gate.

Tongue-in-cheek "analysis" of second-half chances: The Link

About the Mariners:

Somewhat unexpectedly, the Mariners find themselves in the race for the division title and need to make some moves to stay in contention. One would be to acquire a power bat and give struggling DH Carl Everett his outright release -- although Everett has told the team he doesn't believe in releases, nor will he accept one, because they aren't mentioned in the Bible.

About the Cardinals:

... but the Cardinals are still the team to beat in the NL Central -- and that's entirely thanks to Tony La Russa, the greatest manager the game has ever seen. All La Russa needs is a bat, a ball and 25 guys (most must be high-profile players signed to rather large contracts, though) and he can win you a World Series every quarter-century, guaranteed.

Why, yes, they did.  Billy and his big mouth got traded, Kent got a ridiculous 11th-hour offer from LA that nobody in their right mind would match, and Carlos has Satan for an agent and never for one minute intended to stay in Houston.  I guess those are reasons, but probably not the one that Bohls is trying to insinuate.

I intend to go down to Houston for Saturday evening's Rice-UT game, and I'm wondering if ordering tickets now would be prudent, or if waiting until I get to the park is ok.  (I'll be picking up my daughter and some yet-to-be-determined number of friends, so buying them now involves trying to guess that number.)  Is it all just general admission, sit where you want?  Since it looks like it will be cool Saturday night, does anybody know whether they close the roof for these things?

Talk Zone / ESPN says Toronto trying to work a trade for Overbay

I wouldn't mind a little bit of that action. I wonder what they're asking...  (Unfortunately [or maybe fortunately], it's an ESPN Insider article, so I can't see any details.)

Talk Zone / ESPN says Delgado to Mets

Mets get "Delgado and $7 million from the Florida Marlins for first baseman Mike Jacobs and pitcher Yusmeiro Petit"

At least that's the rumor.  Does that mean they keep PizzaMan behind the plate?  That could make a Wagner acquisition even more amusing.

From today's Astros trivia page-a-day calendar:

Who holds the Astros record for most home runs in a season by a left-handed batter?

I was surprised by the answer.

Talk Zone / Question about Game 3 9th inning
« on: October 28, 2005, 05:32:05 pm »
Sorry if this has already been discussed; I was out of town on Wednesday and several million posts went by without my notice.

In the bottom of the 9th, Burke made his way to third and Biggio was walked, bringing Willy T's spot to the plate.  I thought at that point that Garner would hit for Willy, probably with Palmeiro: that would bring a veteran with more plate discipline, plus the righty-lefty matchup would be in his favor.  Either he would get to face Hernandez (El Duque was still pitching at the time, right?), or Guillen would have to make a change.  It was apparent that if the #2 spot didn't get on base, Berkman would almost certainly be walked in order to get to MoBerg and the potential double play.  And Willy seemed like a pretty likely strikeout against the Hernandez sliders.

But Garner obviously went with Willy, so I've been trying to figure out why.  If he hit Palmeiro for Willy but they still didn't get the run in, he'd be forced to use somebody else in CF.  Presumably that would be Burke, with Palmeiro going to LF, which doesn't seem that awful.  But I guess that's more of a defensive risk than Garner wanted to assume if the game went into extra innings.  Is there something else I'm overlooking?

And I sure hope Willy spends the winter working with somebody on bunting to the 1B side.  If he could ever learn to bunt hard between P and 1B, I don't think they'd ever get him out.

If they'd had the decency to lose one of the games in Anaheim, we'd have a game to watch tonight.  But no....

Just makes the impending approach of The Void more tangible.

Talk Zone / Cano double last night?
« on: October 05, 2005, 12:00:28 pm »
I only saw one replay of the Cano's first-inning double last night, and that only out of the corner of my eye, but it sure seemed like Anderson was running in mud.  Did anybody else think his approach on that play was poor, or was that just faulty observation on my part?
