Talk Zone / Game 7
« on: October 30, 2019, 08:20:47 am »
Well, it comes down to one game.  If the players need any additional motivation, other than it's Game FUCKING Seven of the World Series, they need to re-evaluate their career choice.  As several people have pointed out, *this* is the reason they went out and got Zach Greinke.  *THIS* is the reason you want to win your division, have home field advantage.  Regardless of tonight's outcome, I'm proud of this team and proud to be an Astros fan.  However, this is the best team the Astros have ever had, and if they don't finish it, I will be disappointed in the outcome.  Getting to the Nats pen will be key, I think.  They can certainly do it.  They just have to go out and do it.

Talk Zone / Today's (Sunday, August 18th) Game
« on: August 18, 2019, 02:33:10 pm »
If there is such a thing as a "must win" in August, this is it.  A week ago, the Astros were on a roll and had an 11-game lead.  In the ensuing week, they've lost 4.5 games in the standings, and a loss today would put their lead at 5.5 with 37 to play.  I'm not doom and gloom, this is just the reality.  They have to stop the bleeding.

So normally, Fridays are a road trip, we eat lunch off campus.  But for some reason I decided to stay in today.  So I go down to the building cafeteria, and guess what the daily lunch special is?  That's right...Frito Pie.  Well, you didn't have to tell me twice, brother.  The boys are in a funk and need all the help they can get.  Frito pie and a Big Red.  I think things are on the upswing!

Beer and Queso / Wifi extender, boosters, etc, etc, etc...
« on: May 08, 2019, 09:22:53 am »
So I live in a dumb house, built decades before LANs, the internet, and Wifi.  Last year I got fiber optic internet, with the megaspeed, 1,000 Mbps, blah, blah, blah.  It works great (though nowhere near 1,000 Mbps...but I'm told that's mostly device limited), but because of the router placement, it doesn't reach very well across the entire house...upstairs, downstairs, outside on the patio, etc.  I have tried a mesh network, which works great when connected, but it will not stay connected.  It drops the connection after about 30 minutes.  Every time.  I've spent hours on the phone with Linksys, and they've been very patient and tried to be helpful, but it just doesn't work.  I'm considering an "old fashioned" wifi extender, or installing LAN ports in various places.  I don't really want to do the latter, though powerline adapters may skin that cat.  Do range extenders or boosters or whatever do the job?  Are they reliable?  I realize you can get anyone's opinion on anything from Yahoo, but for some odd reason, I trust you yahoos' judgement more.

Thoughts?  Complaints?

So I decided to give Android another try.  For those who, as chuck says, don't have the memory of a goldfish, I briefly kicked iPhone to the curb like 6 years ago, for about a week.  But after years of the iPhone 6, wanting to upgrade, but not wanting to pay 1200 skins for the latest model, which was twice as big as I wanted anyway, I decided to give Android another go.  I went with the Sony Xperia XZ1 compact, less than $400.  In the process of switching now.  I've been a (mostly) loyal Apple guy for a long time, but they finally shoved me away with both hands.  We shall see how it goes.

Astros take a 2-1 lead in the 4th, but they butchered that catcher’s interference ruling. It’s not a dead ball. The Astros could have elected to take the play and scored the run there. Altuve did not have to go back to 3B. He scored the next hitter anyway, but that could have been a huge boner by Hinch.

Talk Zone / Pitch Framing Observation
« on: May 30, 2018, 08:38:28 pm »
I posted this in the GZ, but thought I’d post it here for more discussion. Stassi is good at framing pitches because he funnels the ball to his chest and is fluid. He doesn’t try to “stick” the pitch like a lot of guys and as a result his movements appear natural. He lets the ball come to him and catches the ball close to his body when he can. Brad Ausmus was that way. Stassi’s recieving reminds me of Ausmus.

First game of the day, San Houston State with a 10-inning walk off win over Vanderbilt. The Bearkats were down 5-2 heading to the bottom of the 9th, but managed three runs to tie it up, including a 2-out HR on an 0-2 pitch. Vandy scores in the top of the 10th before a 2-run walk off home run to win it in the bottom half. Great game.

I'm in need of servicing an old stereo receiver...a Sansui 8080db, ca. 1975.  The radio portion doesn't seem to work at all.  I've cleaned it up, and am replacing the lamps, and have cleaned the pots and everything.  But the radio completely on the fritz is getting out of my comfort zone.  Does anyone know of a good/trusted technician for these sorts of things?  Preferably in Houston, but I suppose it can be shipped if I have to (I'm trying not to, as it weighs like 60 lbs).

So in other news...I had a big birthday this year, and the wife had been waffling back and forth on what to get me to mark this milestone.  She finally settled on the new pellet grill on which I've had my eye for a while.  The Memphis Elite.  It arrives today, and I'll be giving it a go this weekend.  Thinking of doing a couple of chickens and some ribs.  I've never been big on brining a chicken, I usually just rub, stuff with lemons, and off we go.  But gonna pull out all the stops this time.

Anyone have any favorite rubs or seasonings for chickens or ribs?

« on: November 02, 2017, 02:21:50 pm »
Not to be forgotten in excellence of Peacock and Morton...both Liriano and Devo got key outs at a key time last night.  Liriano came in to face Bellinger with two on and one out, and got the FC for the second out.  Devo then got Puig on the soft liner to 1B.  Liriano was much maligned when he first came over, but I remember hearing an interview with Luhnow who said that he didn't care about August, that Liriano was brought in to get "one big out in October".  Well, it was actually November, but he did exactly what they brought him here to do.  And Devo vs. Puig, III...awesome job.  Both of those guys only faced one hitter, but they were a huge part of the win.

I didn't know if this moment would ever come, but I cannot imagine it being any sweeter, having spent the last 20 or so years goofing off with all of you.  Tomorrow I will read the GZ and everything else, but tonight I'm smoking that special victory cigar.  We here at OWA have been through a lot, and we routinely "fight like hell" because...well, that's why we're here.

But on behalf of OWA, and honestly, from the very bottom of our hearts...thank you OWA.  You are the best.

...in the 7th, when Gattis grounded into the FC, and Hinch did not pinch run for him at that point.

1.  You were down 2-1 at the time,
2.  You'd already lost one run due to a slow baserunner, and
3.  You had the top of the order coming up against Watson

I understand you don't want to have to burn two bench players there, but desperate times and all that.  You needed someone who could score on a double, or go 1B to 3B on a single.  Well, Springer did single, and Seager kicked the ball into LF...Gattis trotted on down to 2B, and *then* Hinch pinch ran for him.  Couldn't help think that if Fisher were running from 1B, he's on 3B after Springer's hit, and scores on the fly ball.  New ball game.

I am excited beyond belief.  Through Jim's generosity, I am ready to witness history.  I was so excited last night I couldn't sleep...after the game.  I am drinking a Love Street and smoking a Jericho Hill box pressed maduro on the back patio, just like I did yesterday before heading to the yard.  Another Love Street and a Macallan 12 at 1820 to calm my nerves before meeting Jim and heading inside for another Love Street and taco.  No detail is too minor.

Native Houstonian, Houston Cougar, and former Astro Anthony Young passed away yesterday from brain cancer. Young is best remembered for his record losing  streak with the Mets where he lost an astounding 27 straight decisions. Interestingly, during the streak, Young filled in at closer, and was 12 for 12 in save opportunities, including a 23.2-inning scoreless streak, but unable to vulture a win during that period.

Young was only 51.

Just happened to catch Hinch on the radio this morning...a few highlights:

Gurriel will start at 3B tonight to keep his bat in the lineup, but will pretty much DH the rest of the way once they get back to playing AL teams.  May try him in the outfield this offseason.

Doesn't think Valbuena will be back this season.

Is not optimistic McCullers will be back this season, but it's still possible.

Likely to be a few call-ups next week...another catcher, a couple of bullpen arms and possibly a few "reward" call-ups.

The Astros have better than a puncher's chance at the wild card, but will have to seriously nut up in the next two weeks.  He's optimistic, obviously.

Beer and Queso / iPhone SE? Maybe? New Android?
« on: May 24, 2016, 10:50:07 am »
So Apple has released the new iPhone SE (well a couple of months ago).  It's essentially 6s hardware in a 5s body.  The size of the 6 and 6s was always a complaint, and apparently I'm not the only one in the world who didn't want a gigantic phone, despite Apple and Samsung telling me otherwise, because there have not been any available since launch week.  They're now saying perhaps August when they'll have some more to ship.  So I'm getting really tired of Apple and their bullshit.  The company has gone down the shitter since Jobs.  I do not care for the latest iPhone offerings, and seeing as how the iPhone 5 was last version that Jobs actually held and approved, it's unlikely to get better, especially with that pinhead Cook running the company.  I know the iPhone 7 is due out in the fall, but rumors are that they'll be the same size as the 6s.  Couple that with *another* fucked up boondoggle release with the SE, and I'm seriously looking at something else.  Sony makes a really nice phone in the Xperia Z5 compact, which is the same size as the SE, and all the reviews have been raves.  A couple of issues though:

1.  It's not available through AT&T (or any carrier, for that matter), so I'd have to buy an unlocked phone and set it up for the AT&T.  I'm told that's not a big deal, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with that?

2.  Apps.  I have a lot of them, some of them not cheap, and as I understand it, you cannot transfer them from iOS to Android.  I'd have to re-purchase them all.  Is this true?  If so, they've got me by the short an curlies, so that's a factor.

Thoughts?

Talk Zone / More Denial League Drama
« on: May 16, 2016, 01:25:33 pm »
So on this off day, another anecdote from Denial League this weekend...

We're up something like 4-1 in about the fifth inning, when the other guys get a runner on 3B and nobody out.  Guy steps to the plate and proceeds to hit a triple.  4-2 with runner at 3B and nobody out, right?  Well, I'm keeping the book on account of my ankle that I rolled taking the tractor off the trailer a couple of weeks ago.  I actually tried hitting earlier in the game, and after lining a single up the middle, my ankle gave way trying to get out of the box, and I never made it more than 5 feet from the plate.  Score it 8-3 on the putout (this is not the first time in my career I've been thrown out at 1B by the centerfielder, btw).  Lesson learned...90% is not 100%.  So where was I...oh yeah, keeping the book...so I notice that the guy who just hit the triple wasn't due up at the moment, they seemed to have skipped over a guy.  So I called time out and asked "what happened to the other guy...did you guys lose a player?" (this happens from time to time, if you're batting more than 9 guys, and one guy gets hurt or has to leave, you usually just drop him from the lineup)  The answer was "no, he wasn't ready to hit yet, so we just switched him around in the batting order."  Our manager hears this and naturally says "you can't do that."  The other team proceeds to pitch a bitch like someone just flipped their bat.  After much discussion, the umpire finally makes the correct ruling...the batter who batted out of turn is out, the runner from 3B goes back, and now the guy who just batted has to hit again in his proper spot in the order.  So now it's still 4-1, runner on 3B with one out.  We get out of the inning without giving up the run.  We go on to win the game something like 8-2, and the other team is still furious that we called them out for swapping positions in the batting order.  We went to Star Pizza after the game...I hadn't been there in years.

« on: April 05, 2016, 09:30:22 pm »
So I'm watching today's game replay on RSSW, and all I really wanted to see was the 8th when the Astros plated 3 runs. I watch for two and a half fucking hours all the way to the top of the 8th, and after a bunch of commercials, they come back with the "due to time constraints we now move ahead in our coverage", and they pick up with 2 out and the score 5-3. So I saw where Raul Mondesi "Jr" (he's actually not a junior, his brother is, but people call him "junior") has made the Royals' World Series roster, despite never having played above AA.  So his father played in 1,525 games over 13 Major League seasons, and never made it to the World Series.  Junior has now made it to the World Series without ever playing in a single Major League game.  Baseball is a funny game.

Talk Zone / A night of bad calls
« on: October 06, 2015, 10:10:28 am »
So in addition to the controversy in Seattle last night, we got royally fucked in Denial League.  Twice.

1.  We have the bases loaded and one out.  Guy hits a little flair over the SS's head...runners think it's going to drop and advance, the one from 3B scoring.  However, the LF makes a shoestring catch.  He then flips to second base to double off the runner from 2B.  But it's after the runner from 3B scores.  As we're switching sides, I'm reminding the other team that the run counts.  They all start laughing, and one guy bets me $1,000 that I'm wrong.  We're talking to the ump, but he's a slapdick (more on that later) and says he doesn't know the rule.  So in the end, they decide not to count the run.

2.  A few innings later, they have runner on 1B and 2 out.  Batter hits a deep fly ball down the LF line.  I'm watching it, and I thought it hit foul, but regardless, it then bounces over the outfield fence, several feet foul of the pole.  The LF who was chasing it, and only a few feet away immediately throws his hands up to signal the ball went out of play.  The batter stops at 2B, but the umpire signals home run.  Huh?  So I'm arguing with the ump that even if it was a fair ball, it bounced 10 feet in front of the warning track.  His counter is "the ball is over the fence; home run".  We ask the other umpire, and he says he wasn't watching.  The batter shrugs his shoulders and trots in.  The next batter grounds out to end the inning, two runs on the board where no runs should have scored.

So with those two plays, we're three runs in the hole.  We end up losing 7-6.  I show the other team the rule book after the game, and loudmouth refuses to look at it yelling "it's a force out!", quickly grabs his gear runs.  I never did get my thousand bucks.

Talk Zone / September 24, 2015
« on: September 24, 2015, 08:57:06 am »
So here we are in late September, having led the division most of the season, the Astros are effectively four games back of the division and no longer control their own destiny to win it, even with three to play against the leader.  They are effectively tied for the final wild card spot, and need to win out to control their own destiny for it.  There are a lot of reasons for the collapse, and lots of areas of which to be critical.  Lots of emotion on our part too.  We're all invested, and we hate to see our team lose.

When the season started, I was just glad they appeared to have a big league roster again, not to mention they'd be on television.  But from that first Opening Day win, there was a special excitement about this team, and it carried on for the next five months.

I don't know what's going to happen in the next two weeks.  The Astros have put themselves in a bad situation with poor play in the last month of the season, and I'm not optimistic they can fend off the challenges.  Regardless, this team has been more fun to watch all season than any team I can remember in a long time, including several playoff teams.  This is my team.  And I am proud of them.  I am an Astros fan.

Talk Zone / Hinch v Scioscia
« on: September 23, 2015, 06:33:50 am »
Who says there's no strategy in the AL?  Last night Scioscia got pretty much every matchup he wanted...Alvarez/Duffy instead of Gott/Tucker...made Hinch burn Tucker, Duffy, Villar and Valbuena for one at bat by IBBing Valbuena ; thereby forcing Hinch to stick with Marisnick against Street with the tying run in scoring position...which allowed him to IBB Lowrie in the 9th to get to Gattis to end the game.

As allergic Springer is to contact, they can't keep him hitting second any longer. But, as discussed in the GZ today, who would you put there. Personally, I'd put Lowrie there, but if not, why not try Marisnick in the lead off soo and Altuve in the two. After the first inning, this is what you have anyway, why not try starting the game that way?  That gets Springer down to to the 6 or 7 spot, which is where he belongs.

Game Zone 2019 / GameZone 2019: *READ THIS PRIMER*, Clark!
« on: March 13, 2015, 12:07:55 pm »
For those of you who are new to this family of forums (and you know who you are, don't make me call you out), the traffic in the TalkZone often makes it difficult to have a play-by-play thread in that forum.  For that reason, we provide an in-game play-by-play and commentary forum for all Astros games. It is called GameZone.  It is fun, it is wild at times and it will keep you involved in the actual game.  It will take some getting used to here at the GZ, it isn't entirely like the TZ. So as a service to all clarks out there, here is a little bit of a primer for the GZ:

Who does the play-by-play?

Answer: first come, first to serve on the GZ. Usually, all it takes is calling it "I've got PBP today if nobody else wants it!". Obviously, if you hesitate to call it because you're afraid that you can't do PBP for more than an inning or two, that is cool. But usually, the veterans know that calling it and also only doing a few innings is not frowned upon in the GZ. In fact, it helps us if several folks are willing to take on the PBP for the day. Rare are the ones who can do an entire 9 innings of PBP.  So call it if you'd like, tell us how many innings you can go and do it. But if you're new to the GZ, my advice is watch and learn from some of the vets, they'll show you what works best.

Sample PBP

Two aspects of a typical PBP: the subject line and the body of the message.  Let's take each one at a time:

1. The Subject Line - Use the subject line as much as possible for quick perusal by the regulars of the GZ.  Typical look for the subject line if you're doing the PBP is something like this: T3: Astros 3 - Rangers 0.   That subject line tells what inning and the score.  Anything that is not provided that way is considered a GZ Milo, and you don't want that.  Inning and score, subject line good.  Score, subject line okay.  No inning, no score, you're a Milo.

2.  The Body of the Message - The PBP is usually a recap message more than anything else.  On-going or PBP for each batter is also welcome.  For some, it's better, for others, it's not, they'd rather get a recap.  Either way works, so there is no preferred GZ method for the body message for PBP.  If you do a recap type of message, just use the player's name and what they did, like a scorecard.  Example:

Grossman - grounds out 4-3, 1 out
Altuve - double to LF, man on second, one out
Carter - strikes out swinging, 2 out
Singleton - strikes out swinging, inning over

After half an inning: No score - Angels up to bat

Variations like type of pitches, pitch counts, et. al. are welcome.

(Top Tip:  Create a shortcut for "strikes out swinging", it'll save you some serious typing throughout the season)

If I don't do PBP, can I comment about a play or ask a question?

Absolutely. The GZ is about the two aspects of in-game happenings: PBP and color commentary. Some of the best reading in the GZ is the color commentary. Warning, it is usually raw and the emotion of the moment, so never take anything said in the GZ as well thought out analysis, it is always reactionary and that is the way it should be. It is what makes it fun.

Look at it as if you're sitting in a sports bar with a good friend and your watching the game live and react to a homerun hit off Feldman may say some things that aren't about a serious analysis of Scott's abilities... but you will tend to say things about the moment. I mean it is 100% raw emotion. Hence why it is different than the TZ. What is said at the GZ usually stays at the GZ as well, no need to carry emotions over to that forum because that isn't what the TZ is about.

Okay, enough of that, you'll catch on as the season progresses, so have fun reading and participating. OH, and realize that rarely do we delete anything from the GZ, so if you need a recap of the game to read later during the day, feel free to wander in there and read. You'll find the stoic PBP and colorful in-game commentary something of a pleasurable read most of the time.

Enjoy.

Beer and Queso / iPhone 6
« on: January 19, 2015, 10:01:18 am »
So a few weeks ago, Mrs. Hawk decided she wanted to upgrade from her iPhone 4 to the iPhone 6.  So we went down and got her the new one, which made her happy.  She's had the 2GB/month data plan for years now, and has never come close to using that much, in fact I don't think she's ever used 1GB in a month.  I have unlimited data, and even counting flipping around this joint and the hot porn sites featuring girls of mixed racial origin, I typically use around 3GB/month.  However, upon arriving home, just an hour after purchasing the new iPhone 6, I get a text that the Mrs. has used 75% of her data allowance.  Ok, no big deal, she'll be fine.  A few hours later, I get another that said she's now exceeded her allowance and ATT is graciously adding another GB for $10.  I thought "OK, perhaps she was close, she's been downloading her apps to her new phone, the newer version will certainly use more data, the month rolls over in a day or two...no big deal for a one time deal."  Two days later, I get another text that says she's now exceeded this months allowance.  So I started checking the phone and discovered that it absolutely blisters through data.  Even just sitting ther.  Some online checking revealed that this is a major problem, and suggested some things may be using data in the background and to turn them off.  So I did.  And I started doing a side by side comparison with my iPhone 5.  Even with everything turned off, the iPhone 6 was going through about 50MB of data per hour.  Just sitting there.  That means that any time it's off the wifi, it goes through 2GB of data in about 40 hours.  Needless to say, I can't afford data at that rate and took it back.  The guy at ATT, who was exceptionally rude, basically said "yeah well, pay up or shut up, that's what smart phones do."  So we swapped it back for her old iPhone 4 and back to using 10MB/day.

So anyone else gone to the iPhone 6?  Have the same issue?

Beer and Queso / Another Case of Legal Advice Needed...
« on: December 30, 2014, 04:18:01 pm »
Since OWA is pretty well recognized as a legitimate substitute for a law firm...

The situation:

I was involved in an automobile collision on 12/19.  I was at "the place", and was traveling on a narrow county road, when I encountered an 18-wheeler hauling live chickens traveling in the opposite direction.  Being that I was operating in a safe and controlled condition, I was able to pull as far to the right shoulder as possible, and come to a complete stop, thinking the 18-wheeler would do something similar, so I could back up and let him pass.  However, the 18-wheeler continued and tried to pass me, crossing over the center of the road (it was on a bit of a curve), and a protrusion on the back end of his trailer struck the rear driver's side of my truck (which was on the shoulder of the opposite side of the road), ripping the rear quarter panel open like a sardine can.

The driver of the 18-wheeler refused to give me any information (although he is required to by law), saying I had to wait until his supervisor arrived, which would hopefully be in a couple of hours.  Obviously that didn't sit too well with me, so I called the local sheriff's office, who called DPS and a DPS trooper eventually arrived.  The DPS took all the information and we went on our way.  The other driver still refused to give me any information, but I was able to get a financial responsibility phone number from DPS (still not the other driver's name).  After about five different entities, I finally got ahold of their claims management people early last week.  Since then, however, nothing.  I was finally able to get information on the other driver from the published accident report.

Now I am getting the runaround from the other driver's "insurance" (I'm assuming they are self insured).  They show no interest in returning emails or phone calls (not surprising since their business model is predicated on not paying claims).  At the scene the other driver said "hey, I didn't have time to slow down, not my fault", and both the driver and his supervisor suggested "it was just one of them things, no foul, every body go their own way" (no damage whatsoever to the 18-wheeler, of course).  The DPS trooper said it's not the DPS's job to assign fault, they just document what happened.  It's up to the two parties to decide who pays for what.

I don't want any compensation other than for them to fix my truck, but it's been 11 days now without a vehicle, and the inconvenience is starting to mount.  Do I need to lawyer up?  What type of lawyer handles such things?

« on: September 04, 2013, 11:28:57 am »
So back in the day I used to enjoy a little bit of sailing, and also enjoyed following the America's Cup.  You read about it in the paper and in Sports Illustrated, and it just seemed like such a cool, gentleman's game (yes, I know yacht racing is for the disgustingly rich, but I didn't think about that as a kid).  The 2013 regatta is set to begin Saturday, with the Golden Gate Yacht Club defending the challenge of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.  I saw today that GGYC's representative, Larry Ellison's Oracle Team USA, has already forfeited two races in the best of 17, for cheating with a different boat in previous races.  I thought of what I used to see as a gentleman's sport (rich gentleman but gentleman, nonetheless) turned into a corporate cash grab...which turned my thoughts to the PEDs in baseball.  It made me sad.  I then thought of golfers, who as goofy as some of the rules are, seem to police themselves nicely.  I thought the sporting world needs more golfers.

So a few weeks ago, the A/C at the ranch went out.  Ants shorted out the contact switch.  I got up here last night, and the DirecTV is out.  A giant banana spider has built a web across the dish.  I sweep it off, and everything is cool.  Today, that little fucker has built the web back.  Normally, I like having the banana spiders around, but this little bastard is pissing me off.

I sure wish it would rain.

Beer and Queso / Proposed New Airline Rule
« on: July 21, 2013, 11:35:21 am »
So I'm sitting at the airport in New Orleans, booked on the 9:25 to Houston. We're delayed due to a mechanical issue. They won't say how long. The next flight up at our gate is the 12:25 to Houston. They're getting ready to board that one. I propose that when a flight is delayed because of plane trouble, the passengers on the earliest flight should get the next plane scheduled to that destination city.

« on: June 28, 2013, 12:32:32 am »
OK, so here's the situation.  I'm on 2B, with a runner behind me at 1B.  I think we're up by 7 or 8 runs, but we're actually up by 11.  Top of the 7th inning.  They're paying me no attention, so I take 3B.  The pitcher on the other team, who's a regular crybaby anyway, throws a fit.  Yells at me.  Threatens to hit our batters.  He doesn't.  We eventually win the game by 7 runs.

After the game, I talk to the opposing pitcher, whom I've known and played against for years, and apologized saying I didn't realize we were up as much as we were, wasn't trying to embarrass anyone, in this league 10 runs is not insurmountable, nothing personal, I hope he understands I just thought I was trying to scratch out every run we could get.  He was not particularly gracious.

So, should I get one in the back next time I face him?

Beer and Queso / Sports Headlines From Around the Globe
« on: June 21, 2013, 01:50:08 am »
Why is that I get better sports coverage pretty much any place in the word than in Houston?  (that's a rhetorical question, chuck, I'm not expecting an answer)

From this morning's Arab Times sports pages...

Lead Story (cricket):  India outplay Sri Lanka to reach Champs Trophy final - Apparently India are a cricket juggernaut.  Host England had better watch out...that Shikhar Dhawan is quite a masher.

Soccer (yes they call it soccer, not "football"):

Spain thrash Tahiti 10-0, break FIFA record - This is just embarassing.
Italy edge Japan to make semis
Neymar counter-attacks in word and deed

Hockey:  Hawks edge Bruins to level Stanley Cup final - Hockey is more important in the Middle East than it is in the US.

Badminton:  Filippino Badminton Association of Ahmadi Summer Smash Tournament returns to action - I've been wondering what was going on in the international badminton world.

Horse Racing:  Queen makes history with Royal Ascot Gold Cup Win - apparently "top hats were thrown skywards".

Olympics:  2016 Games will bring 'significant benefits' - The Brazilian natives are restless.

Auto racing:  Mercedes accuse FIA of 'double standards' - Those sneaky Germans are at it again, this time with illegal tyres.

Baseball:
Davis homers twice as Orioles rout Tigers 13-3 - Davis leads the league with 26 dingers.
Houston host MLB diversity summit - Fuck you Bud.

Rugby:
Folau among 3 new caps for Wallabies - It takes a combined British and Irish team to match up against the Aussies.
5 changes to All Blacks team against France - An "all blacks" team?  So much for Bud and his diversity program.

Tennis:
Serena targets 6th Wimbledon title, 17th major - Speaking of juggernauts...
Murray poised to end Britain 77 years of pain - It's tough being a Limey tennis fan...

Beer and Queso / RIP Slim Whitman

I just read in the other RIP thread about Whitman.  Not only was he from my hometown, but he was one of the last of the old-school "countrypolitan" crooners, which I much prefer to the hell raising, booze addled redneck caricatures in country music today.  And more poignantly, he was one of the ever dimishining club of WWII veterans, who are leaving us too soon.

RIP Slim.

Beer and Queso / Tattoo coverups
« on: June 04, 2013, 10:06:26 pm »
So I'm watching this show on SpikeTV..."Tattoo Nightmares".  The premise is, people get tattoos that they regret, so as a solution, they get a bigger, gaudier tattoo to cover it up.  For example:  A chick has a butterfly on her ass cheek, and her boyfriend laughs at her while doing her from behind.  The solution: get a giant grim reaper that goes down the back of her thigh, up to the middle of her back.  One guy had a tattoo of a bullet hole on his head, and was embarrassed by it.  To fix that, he had a giant American flag cover his entire bald head.

And these people wonder why they can't get a job.

NY Supreme Court rules that nude dancing is not art, unlike say ballet, but rather "entertainment", and is not exempt from sales tax.

The court split 4-3, with the dissenting judges saying there's no distinction in state law between "highbrow dance and lowbrow dance," so the case raises "significant constitutional problems."

Ran across THIS today.  Though I don't quite agree, it was still funny...and to the point.

"...As for hat storage, a restaurant should be prepared for the possible onslaught of civilization, and so, if there is no proper storage, one should ask the host, hostess or waitperson where one might temporarily store one’s hat. If the facility provides no suitable accommodation and no unused chair is handy, a gentleman is justified in leaving it on, at a rakish angle proportionate with his degree of displeasure."

Talk Zone / Funny Denial League Story
« on: June 28, 2012, 11:24:40 am »
A lot of times, when a hitter swings at a border line pitch, he'll ask the umpire if it was otherwise a strike.  90% of the time, the umpire will say "oh yeah, that was right on the corner" or something like that.  Once in a while the ump will say "no, I would have called that a ball".  Either way, the ump usually says something about the pitch.  Last night, playoffs of the old man division of the Denial League.  Close game, 3-2 count on the hitter.  The hitter swings at a pitch that was over the plat, but high, and fouls it back.  He turns to the ump as asks "was that a strike or did I swing at ball four?"  The ump says "we'll never know, will we".  I couldn't help but laught out loud.

Beer and Queso / Business Too Casual
« on: June 05, 2012, 03:39:55 pm »
I didn't start out to be the resident curmudgeon, but after rants about everything from shaving to maladroit waitstaff, it's time to list the next reason why the world has gone to hell in a handbasket...this unkempt army of hobos that has invaded my place of employment.

When I started in the professional world (not THAT long ago), it was expected that I wear a jacket and tie, if not a suit, to work.  Every.  Day.  I was not politician or a lawyer, just a run-of-the-mill professional, who was expected to look...well, professional, not like I was getting ready to clean out the garage.  I wore socks, and the only two acceptable colors of shoes were brown or black.  Purple wasn't on the color palette.  Now, I'm appalled at what some people consider appropriate business attire.  Not only do they look like homeless waifs, but this casual attitude has blurred the definition of what is acceptable personal conduct between co-workers.  There is a line there people...when you come to work, you are to behave differently than when you are sitting in a lawn chair drinking beer.  Different language, different interactions with your co-workers.

I'm not down on business casual.  I didn't particularly like having to wear a suit everyday, especially in Houston.  But it sure made me feel like I was working at a place of business.  Let's have SOME boundaries.

Beer and Queso / And another thing...office coffee etiquette
« on: February 23, 2012, 07:29:47 am »
If you're going to live in a civilized society, there are certain behaviors that should be observed when it comes to the coffee pot.

1.  When you arrive at the office, and the coffee has not been made, don't bitch and moan.  Make the coffee.

2.  When you do make coffee, just make it normal, according to the directions.  We understand that you may like yours weak, or strong, but don't use 1/4 of the bag for a pot, and don't use 4 bags just because you need a little extra jolt.

3.  The decaf pot is for decaf.  It's clearly marked.  Don't make decaf in the other pots, and don't make regular in the decaf pot.  Believe it or not, decaf is a big deal to some people.

4.  Finally, when you take the last cup, make a fresh pot.  Just because you left four coffee molecules in the pot doesn't mean you didn't empty the pot.

Follow these rules, and the world will be a better place for all of us.

Beer and Queso / Shaving...Part Deux
« on: January 13, 2012, 09:43:39 am »
A while back, we had a fun conversation about razors and shaving (one of my favorite threads, BTW), in which I said I'd had enough of the gimmicky four, six, twelve..howevermany bladed cartridges out there, for which you need a federal background check to purchase.  Since then I have been experimenting with numerous types of shaving apparati.  My face isn't nearly as handsome as the Dark Star's, so I figured what the hell.

I have settled on the traditional double-edged safety razor, the kind your grandfather probably used.  Not only does it give the second best shave possible (behind only a finely honed straight razor), the blades cost about $0.20 a piece rather than about $4.

Also, my new preferred shaving equipment is made in the old country, Limeyland.  My razor, my badger hair brush, and even the shaving cream, which is made by a company called Taylor of Old Bond Street, which just sounds like somewhere a millionaire would shop.

At any rate...sometimes the old ways are just better.

So I finally got a set of these...real soapstone pieces that you freeze and add to your whisky.  They definitely "cool" the whisky down, but not nearly as much as real ice.  Of course, they don't dilute the whisky either.  Overall, they work pretty well.  Only one problem:  I only have 9 of them, and they take several hours to freeze.  So if I use three for each glass of whisky, that's only three glasses a sitting.

You guys can think I'm being ridiculous all you want, but... when I invite you to my home for Thanksgiving dinner, it's not alright to show up in gym shorts, a tshirt and tennis shoes.  Yes, you are family.  Yes, I want you to feel welcome in my home.  But, I invited you over to celebrate a tradition-rich, honored National Holiday, not help me clean out the garage.  I realize it's not a Presidential inauguration ball, but I still think wearing pants is in order.  The worst part is, your sons were dressed the same way, and I'm afraid they're going to grow up thinking it's acceptable to wear your workout clothes to Thanksgiving dinner.  So pardon ol' Uncle Matt for having to give them what appears to be the only lesson in social etiquette they'll be receiving.

As I watch the kids leave school, I notice that most of them are covered in tattoos. Not small ones, big ones all over. Especially the girls.  So my question is...I thought you had to be 18 to get a tattoo. Is that not correct?  Or do these kids get them illegally?

So I was listening earlier to Alvin Lee's "In Tennessee", the record he did with Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana.  I fuckin' LOVE that record!

At any rate, now listening to Dave Edmunds....so (with a shoutout to the Boss)....

Beer and Queso / Summer Reading
« on: September 01, 2011, 07:40:05 pm »
Summer is almost gone, and I hadn't recalled a thread on our summer reading, so...

I'm finishing up The Big Rich by Bryan Burrough (who wrote Barbarians At The Gate). It's a terrific narrative of the lives of some of Texas's early oil millionaires, guys like H.L. Hunt, Roy Cullen, Clint Murchison and Sid Richardson, from their days as true wildcatters to their status as some of the richest men in the world, to their influences over national politics. The best book on the oil business since Daniel Yergin's The Prize

Also, at the request of the missus, I've read The Art of Racing In The Rain, and have promised to read The Help.

Beer and Queso / External Graphics Cards
« on: April 27, 2011, 02:59:14 pm »
So the wife is wanting to add a second monitor to her desktop at the office (after she hears me rave about my having three).  She has the one VGA port on the motherboard, and that's it.  I told her she basically has two options: 1) install an additional or dual-port graphics card through a open PCI slot, or 2) one of those external cards that connects through a USB port.  Obviously the former is the best solution, and likely the cheapest.  But it requires getting her good-for-nothing IT guy to actually install it.  Has anyone used one of the latter?  Is it any good?  Response time?  Am I missing any other options?

Beer and Queso / Writing Instruments
« on: April 14, 2011, 10:36:24 am »
So here's an odd discussion I had yesterday...

I have to write a lot for work.  Not like writing papers or novels (though I do a lot of technical writing), but taking notes and drawing maps and diagrams.  I'm either in a meeting, in the field taking notes, or drawing and marking up maps.  They have apps for that.  They're calld "pens" and "pencils".

I'm kind of particular about my writing instrument.  When I'm in a meeting or otherwise use a pen, I prefer a fountain pen.  They're incredibly smooth and much easier and less tiresome on the arm than ballpoints.  And since I'm right-handed, smearing the ink is not a problem.  In the field, I use an ultra-fine point Sharpie.  It's the best waterproof ink I've ever seen.  For drawing, I use a drafting pencil, an Alvin Draftmatic I bought 26 years ago, to be exact.

My co-workers find it funny that I don't simply use the cheap stuff they put in the office supply cabinet.  Am I the only one who's still particular about such things?

Beer and Queso / Cheeseburgers and naked women...
« on: April 04, 2011, 08:34:50 am »
So I mentioned last week that I was in Santa Fe, one of my favorite places to eat.  So Thursday, after a meeting, I decide that that I have to get a green chile cheeseburger at the Bobcat Bite.  So my co-worker and I are sitting at the counter, waiting on our burger, and a tatooed couple walk in and sit next to us.  The good looking blonde introduces herself as "Krissy" and strikes up a conversation about the food.  As we're chatting, in walks all these people with TV cameras, microphones, clipboards, etc.  The guy makes an announcement that they're filming a food-related TV show, starring the hip-looking couple.  I have to sign a release, get my picture taken, etc, etc.  So I continue to chat with these folks while the cameras are right in our faces and about three inches from my burger.  Turns out, the guy is some really trendy French chef from Los Angeles named Ludo Lefevbre, who is currently the greatest thing in L.A. since sliced bread.  I, of course, am not familiar with him.  So last night, I'm looking the guy up on the interwebs, and low and behold, not only is *he* a culinary mover and shaker, but his wife, with whom I spent the better part of an hour talking about chiles and burgers and barbecue, was a contestant on The Apprentice and appeared within the pages and on the cover of the June 2007 issue of Playboy.  It was my first experience dining with a Playboy model.

It's baaaaack! Yes, the game you all pay waaaaay too much attention to and get underoos in a bunch about has made its return to the TZ.  The heck with March Madness Brackets, you know as well as I do that the RFTL is really the primo game in town.  We will award a lid to the winner.

You ready... here you go...
RACE FOR THE LID XII

Contest Rules:
________________________________________
1.  Whatever the rules are, BudGirl (your RFTL judge and jury for 2010) can change them any time for any reason, including whim.  The purpose of this rule is not to promote chaos, but to preempt wailing, moaning, whining, and griping.  Particularly griping.
________________________________________
2.  Picks below 80 should not win, even if they’re right they’re wrong.  They will be accepted and you can be a winner but no one will like you.
________________________________________
3.  All posts are in this thread.  Posts out of this thread are DQ’d unless BudGirl changes the rules.
________________________________________
4.  One choice per person.
________________________________________
5. If there are gaps in the high picks, say, between 95 and 162, the high pick gets the gaps down to the next highest pick.  This does not work in reverse, i.e., below 95.  We all lose if the Astros win fewer than the low pick.
________________________________________
6. The grand prize, of course, is an Astros cap of BudGirl's choosing from Astros.com.  BudGirl is allowed to make rulings on prize disputes that may arise... namely, she gets to tell you to go to hell if you whine that you should get the prize!
________________________________________
7.  NO POSTINGS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL THE OFFICIAL COMMENCEMENT TIME, WHICH IN THIS CIRCULAR DEFINITION WILL BE ON OR ABOUT 10:00 a.m., Thursday, MARCH 31ST (the Official Commencement Time).  Anyone who post before then will be DQ'd.________________________________________
8.  No entries will be accepted after the first pitch on Opening Day.
________________________________________
9.  If there is no correct entry BudGirl will find a winner by a method created in her mind or with some help.
________________________________________
10.  Here’s the list of past winners:

2010 Lurch
2009 Ron Brand
2008 EasTexAstro
2007
2006  Fredia (who PM'ed me and called me every name in the book... misspelled of course)
2005  Drew Corleone
2004  Andyzipp
2003  Jim R
2002  no winner
2001  Neil T. (See how arbitrary and capricious his rulemaking can be?  He didn’t even enter the contest until the 161st game, right after he disqualified the real winner.)
2000  no winner, but one heck of a whiner
1999  Astrobabe

Good Luck!

Beer and Queso / Another bill from Bob McNair...
« on: January 29, 2011, 08:39:08 am »
arrived yesterday.  Yep, the bill for the 2011 Houston Texans season tickets has arrived.  Mr. McNair includes a letter explaining how excited he is at the championship he's building, but is generously keeping all pricing the same as 2010 (ticket prices have nearly doubled in the last 5 years, and parking prices have risen 125%).  He also addresses the impending work stoppage.  Here is what they're saying:

  • Full payment of your tickets is expected, as normal.
  • If any games are cancelled due to the lockout, you will be refunded the cost of the cancelled games.
  • Refunds will be paid "no later than 30 days after knowing exactly how many home games we will have in 2011".
  • If you pay in full by the due date, any refund will be paid with interest.
  • You will have a choice to receive in the form that you paid for the tickets (credit card, check, etc) or as credit on your account for future purchases.

So there ya go.  I guess you really can't ask for more than that.

Beer and Queso / Personality Profile
« on: December 17, 2010, 01:55:16 pm »
So at work, we had to take this personality profile test to determine what "ecolor" we were...red/blue, green/yellow, etc.  This "helps us communicate in the ways other people hear".  Turns out, I'm blue/yellow, which apparently means the following:

(verbatim from my profile)

"I am a low key, inclusive person who makes others feel comfortable and wanted.  I am naturally supportive and a natural conversationalist who both listens and expresses myself with ease.  I seek positive relationships and enjoy being involved with different kinds of people in different situations.  However, there are times when I enjoy being on my own.

I have a tendency to build esteem in others and I am always looking for opportunities to seek harmony.  I sometimes lack assertiveness with others and play down my own personal needs.  I have an inherent sense of fun and enjoy seeing people happy.  I dislike confrontation or conflict."

Discuss.

Not a big bourbon drinker, but someone asked a while back about some of the good ones.  This month's Cigar Aficionado has an article on top quality bourbons.  Some of their recommendations:

Maker's 46
Evan Williams Single Barrel Reserve
Russell's Reserve Small Batch 10
Basil Hayden
Bulleit
Eagle Rare Single Barrel
Jim Beam Black
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select (yes, I know Jack Daniel's technically isn't a bourbon, but it's on their list as a "close cousin")

For the last 3 months, I've had a summer intern working with me.  Friday is her last day.  I'm going to take her to lunch with some of her other co-workers, and I have a nice card with a handwritten note (the standard "thank you...best of luck in your career...I know you'll be successful...etc).  However, I was wondering if it's appropriate for me to get her a departing gift...not from the company, but from me personally?  Obviously, the gift would be business appropriate, but is it creepy or in bad form for me to give the gift?

Don't know how many of you are fans of the movie Fandango, but this weekend is UltimateFandango 2010, which happens to be the 25th anniversary of the film.  UF is an annual pilgrimage for devotees, and it's a weekend long road trip to the various places shown in the film, culminating in the spot along the Rio Grande where "DOM" was buried.

UF2010 started tonight with a screening of the film at the Big Sky Drive-In here in Midland.  Great night...lots of Shiner, cigars and stories with people from all over the country.  Chuck Bush, who played "Dorman" in the film was there, and got to chat with him a bit.  He's a super cool guy.

At any rate, if you've never seen the film, shame on you.  It's the greatest "road trip" movie ever, not to mention one of the best "Texas movies" of all time.  It's also got some awesome tunes.

Party on!

Beer and Queso / On the razor's edge...

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704699604575343210255777650.html?KEYWORDS=razor

I ran across this article earlier this week, and it kind of hit home with me, as I've recently decided I've had enough of the fancy gimmicks and paying $20 for a 4-pack of razor blades.  I've gone back to the cheap disposable kind, you know 10 fer a dollar.  But it got me thinking...who keeps buying this crap?  Is it everyday guys like me or just the young guys who look like the models in the commercials?

At any rate, I suppose shaving is a pretty personal choice for most guys, and everyone has their favorite way of doing it.  My grandfather used a straight razor.  My dad used the ol' double-edged "safety razor", which could still tear your face up, if you were still a little groggy in the morning.  Me...I've tried using both, but didn't have the skill to sharpen the straight razor properly and the safety razor made even more nervous.  I've always used the modern "bloodless" kind, though I'm not a devotee of any particular brand or style.  But something makes me long for the days when shaving was an important daily ritual, something a man did to put his best face forward, even if he wasn't a matinee idol.  Perhaps I'm just getting old.

If you haven't been to Hobby recently (and by recently I mean in the last few months), you're in for a treat the the next time you do. They've recently started to open up all the renovations they've been doing the last few years, and it looks fantastic. They've almost completely restored the original 1920's art deco look, as well as drastically increasing the ease of movement and functionality. At any rate, I spend a fair amount of time in an airport, and they've really done a nice job with this one.

I have recently been turned on to Firemans #4, a blonde ale from the Real Ale Brewing Co. in Blanco.  They have it on draft at the cigar bar here in Midland, and I picked up a sixer at HEB (Shiner 101 has still not made it this far west yet) today.  It's sort of cross between a hefeweizen and a pils, slightly cloudy with a kind of citrus-like complement.  It's definitely an ale though,  hoppy, but not overly so.  It's quite good.

Beer and Queso / Death of a famous logo
« on: February 10, 2010, 09:18:42 am »
http://tv.yahoo.com/blog/mtvs-big-change--981

Way back in the day, kiddies, the "M" in MTV stood for "music".  The channel was conceived to be a channel devoted entirely to music, 24 hours a day.  But sadly, it has become "the reality channel", with the music all but gone.  However, there was still the famous tagline that accompanied the logo to remind us of the channel's roots.  Well, that is no more.  MTV has dropped the "music television" tagline altogether, completely ending the connection it once had to music.  I was just a whippersnapper, a freshman in high school, when MTV first appeared on the scene, but it had a pretty profound impact on my personal life at the time.  For those lucky enough to have cable tv, it was a daily ritual.  Discussions at school were abuzz about a new band or a new song.  Our social lives at that age were firmly fixed around the popular music of the time and by extension, MTV.  Most of us, of course, outgrew MTV, and music didn't seem to be all that important to the next generation, as they were more turned on by the latest celebrity gossip and watching a group of 20-somethings sit around a $10 million-dollar house arguing about who "disrespected" them.  For many folks, being 14, 15, 16 years old was a troubled time of confusion, arguing with their parents, being uncomfortable in their own skin.  But I'll always look back on that age with fondness, a time when I really had very few worries.  MTV was a part of that, and I'm sad to see the last link to that finally go.

My wife has just informed me that she has been chosen as the Houston Texans' "Toro's Extra Points" Grand Prize Winner.  Apparently we have won an all-expense paid trip to the Pro Bowl, including air fare, hotel, food, transportation, pre-game receptions/parties and, of course, tickets to the game.  So it looks like I will be spending the last weekend of January in Miami.  Too bad it wasn't in years past, when the Pro Bowl was in Hawai'i.

No word whether or not I'll have a chance to kick Gary Kubiak in the junk.

Beer and Queso / New Guitar
« on: December 29, 2009, 03:19:55 pm »
I bought a new guitar today...from a place I'd never thought I'd buy a guitar.  Best Buy.  They had it, Guitar Center didn't.  It's a Martin DX1, the solid spruce top with high-pressure laminate back and sides.  I wanted something that I hoped would a) handle the desert air a bit better than my solid wood guitar, and b) handle my knocking it around going back to the kitchen for more scotch.  It plays and sounds really nice.

Finally got around to stumbling through it over the last four days.  Holy crap that's a terrible movie.  I thought Matthew Fox was the worst actor alive today, but now I'm convinced that Brad Pitt takes the title.  Fox overacts, Pitt just sucks.  The sad part is, the movie could have been good, but when you reel in a great actor like Edward Norton and give Meat Loaf the best part in the film, you're doomed.  Well, that and you cast Brad Pitt in it.

I think I should start a journal, perhaps a column, on the out of the way little hole-in-the-wall/mop&pop/rural cafe-type places I often get to visit on my travels through the Oil Patch.

Yesterday I ate at the Spanish Inn in Snyder.  I had the "Mexican Plate", which the menu says has been on the menu since 1943, even though the menu also says the restaurant has only been open since 1976.  It consisted of one cheese enchilada, one "taco", rice and beans.  The taco was more of a flauta, as it was fried.  At any rate, it wasn't bad, though the rice was a little strange and had a burnt taste to it.  The salsa was pretty good.  I'll be in/around Big Lake tomorrow, so we'll see what's available.

« on: June 07, 2009, 10:11:50 pm »
So I decided to drive up to Lubbock today, run some errands, see the sights, but mainly just to get out of the apartment for a while.  I enjoy driving through the desert, having a smoke...it's relaxing.  At any rate, it gave me a chance to catch today's game on the radio.  Thank God for XM.  While listening to Milo, I got thinking back on his career, and what it's been like to listen to him for nearly 40 years.  Frankly, I got a little sad.  Not because he's so bad now, but because he's really at the end of the line, and it's sort of the end of an era, for me at least.  I've been as critical of Milo the last 10 years as anyone, but it's like a friend once told me...that old dog might bite you every day, but you're still gonna miss him when he's gone.

Talk Zone / Brian Moehler Update
« on: April 29, 2009, 10:12:59 pm »
Mixed night for Moehler, making a rehab start at AA.  He looked terrible in the first two innings.  Fastball around 83 mph, no location, couldn't get the sinker working.  He gave up 8 runs on 10 hits in the first two innings, and none of them were bloops, they were peas.  Third time through the order though, he settled in.  His location got better, and the sinker really started to sink.  I think he got 9 straight outs to complete the 5th, without walking anyone and striking out 3 or 4.

In other AA news, Koby Clemens has been promoted and he was behind the dish tonight for Corpus.  All I can say is, holy sweet cherry pie he's terrible.  He's got an arm that makes Craig Biggio look like Pudge Rodriguez, and I think he had three passed balls tonight.  There were three or four other balls he missed, but no runners advanced.  Also, I didn't realize how small he was.  I don't know what he's listed at, but he's maybe 5'8" in his spikes.  He did get a hit and drove in a run though.

Jimmy Van Ostrand had two HRs for the Hooks, and that whole team looks like they can hit pretty well.  Not much pitching to speak of though.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Texas League
« on: April 18, 2009, 10:25:39 am »
I haven't rode The Bus that often in past years, but now that I'm living in Midland, I get a chance to see some Texas League action.  The local Rockhounds are an A's affiliate, but I reckon I'll get to see some of those whippersnappers from Corpus throughout the season as well.  I'll try to bring up anything interesting I notice.

On a local note, the Rockhounds have a catcher by the name of Josh Donaldson.  I think he was originally with the Cubs organization, but got traded as they're pretty well set at catcher for foreseeable future.  At any rate, Donaldson hasn't impressed me with the stick, but Holy Shit he's got a Major League arm.  He's thrown out 6 basestealers in the last two nights, several of which I thought "no way" when the pitcher delivered.  He has terrific footwork, a quick release and a strong, accurate arm.  Defensively, he's Major League material right now.  I wish he were in the Astros organization.

Absolutely gorgeous day here in Houston.  Got all suited up (I love suiting up) and headed for the yard.  Both teams are there, ready to go and guess what?  No umpires show up.  After a call to the league president revealed that no umps would be coming, we got together and decided (after a few Braveheartish "I hope we didn't get dressed up fer nothin'"s) that we would play anyway, and the game would count in the league standings.  The catchers called balls and strikes and we were sort of on the honor system in the field.  It was the best umpired game we've had in years.  It reminded me of being a kid, when we would play all day long, and never needed an umpire.  Even though my team lost, it was a great day of baseball.  We should play games like that more often.

Talk Zone / My Weekend in San Francisco (non-BB)
« on: August 20, 2007, 01:47:12 pm »
Since I solicited and received much appreciated advice from several of you regarding visiting San Francisco (and because I'm sitting in a hotel room bored out of my skull), I thought I'd offer my opinions after visiting:

Lodging:

1.  Hotels were hard to come by for this past weekend and seemed inappropriately expensive.  The cheapest place I could find was $169/night, with many of the hotels that were recommended going for $450/night.

2.  Stayed at the Pickwick at 5th/Mission across from the old Mint and SF Chronicle buliding.  It's an older hotel, so it wasn't made for the modern traveler.  All the electricity and water and such had been retrofitted, wich was a little awkward, but overall it was clean and everything worked, even if it was a very small room.  They told me the movie The Maltese Falcon was filmed in the hotel, which was cool since that's one of my favorite movies.  The location of the hotel was great, just a block from Market St and a few blocks more to Union Square.

Transportation:

1.  Easy drive from the Oakland airport to downtown SF.  The hotel had parking for guests at $25/day, which seemed comparable to public lots throughout the city.  Didn't drive any in the city, only took public transportation.

2.  The public transportation is OK, I guess, but it's comically inadequate for the number of people.  The shortest wait for any bus/streetcar/cable car was over an hour, with some being up to 3 hours.  Cable cars are not really "public transportation" anyway, they're really just an amusement ride, though I suppose they do get you from Point A to Point B.

3.  The streetcar stations are very poorly marked.  You have to know where you are when you want to get off as there is no announcement or signage indicating at which station it is stopping.  You just have to know, which is difficult for tourists.

Food:

1.  Overall, the food was very good.  Had Thai noodles for lunch on Friday and had dinner at Dante's at Pier 39 that night.  Lunch at the Wharf on Saturday and (at the advice of Jim) dinner at Fior d' Italia on Saturday night.  Had the veal at Fior and it was very good.  Mrs. Hawk had risotto milanese and she said it was just like her grandmother's, who was from Genoa.  The pasta fagioli soup was authentic as well.  A couple of negatives about the dining experience though.  Service was not a priority anywhere.  Perhaps I'm spoiled in Houston, but waiting and hour and a half for your soup and 45 minutes to get your water refilled is a bit taxing.  Speaking of taxing...you have to pay something called a "San Francisco Minimum Wage Tax" on your food.  Not sure what that's all about, but that's life in the city, I suppose.  The other negative out the dining was that the hours the restaurants were open seemed a little odd.  We had a devil of a time finding breakfast before 9 am and it was impossible to get lunch before 11:30.  Pretty much everything was locked up by 10:00 pm, so no coffee or gelato after dinner, except in the restaurant.

The Weather:

1.  Was fabulous.  They said the high was 63, but it felt more like 78.  Sunny all weekend, no fog.  I gathered that it was particularly nice, even for SF, so we were lucky there.

2.  I don't understand why people walked around in heavy coats and parkas.  I was in a long-sleeve tshirt or hawaiian shirt and it was very comfy.  Any warmer, and I would have been sweating.  Not sure why people acted like they were attending a Green Bay Packers game in December.

Errata:

1.  Unbelievably crowded city.  It's just a sea of humanity.  It was more crowded than New Orleans at Mardi Gras.  Made it difficult to get around.

2.  Did the usual touristy stuff, Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Chinatown, Golden Gate, etc.  Was pretty good, and we knew we were doing the touristy stuff, so everything was cool.

3.  Alcatraz was really cool.  The audio tour is really neat.  I was amazed at how small the cells were.  The entire cell is about the size of a queen-sized bed, and the inmates spent 22 hours a day in them.  Brutal.

4.  Mrs. Hawk couldn't find any Italian people, even in "Little Italy", which disappointed her.  She wanted to practice speaking Italian.

A great time overall, and definitely a place to return to, though I was told other times of the year will likely be less crowded.

Thanks to all who provided the advice and recommendations.

1967...The Summer of Love...aka...The Summer of HudsonHawk

Yes, 40 years ago this summer yours truly entered into this world, though at the opposite corner of the country from San Francisco.  Still, as luck would have it, I'll be in the Bay Area on business at the end of August, and am thinking about having my wife join me at the end of the week for a few days.  So a few questions for those who don't despise me....

Where should we stay (2 nights, Fri/Sat)?  In the City?  Napa?  Bus station?  Don't want to spend $300/night

Any "must dos"?

Any "don'ts"?

Restaurants to take my lovely bride (we'll also be celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary)?

Any help would be appreciated.

Talk Zone / At The Yard....in Midland, West Texas
« on: April 10, 2007, 09:15:46 pm »
I haven't been to a minor league game in a few seasons, so while out here in God's Country, I decided to check out the local nine.  Caught the back end of a twinight twin bill necessitated by the snow out on Saturday.  A few particulars:

Left the office at 6:00, stopped by the hotel, freshened up, drove to the yard, parked, went to the ticket window, went inside, got a dog and a beer and was in my seat by 6:20.

Nice big parking lot.  Parking is free.

8 bucks got me a seat in the third row behind the on-deck circle.

Citibank Park in Midland is pretty nice.  Small, but nice.  The seats are very comfortable, much moreso than at MMPUS.

The dog was so-so at $2.50.  16-ounce Shiner draft was $4.50.  The second Shiner cost the same as the first (imagine that) and the pretzel was also $2.50.  The pretzels are better than they are at MMPUS, but they didn't have any spicy mustard, which is a drag cause I'm kind of a pretzel connoisseur.

The Rockhounds started this big Jeff Juden-looking doofus who threw puss.  He scattered 6 or 8 hits over his 5 innings, and only gave up 2 runs though.

The (Arkansas) Travelers started #23, don't know his name.  He had good stuff, but kind of a Nuke LaLoosh.  I don't think he hit "Rocky" the mascot, but he threw several to the screen.

Took me 4 innings to find the fucking pitch speed indicator, and even then I think the guy operating it was either high or just making it up.  One pitch would be 88 and the next would be 45, then 72.  One of the relievers was throwing gas by everyone and the radar gun read 83.

The Rockhound SS has good range, but a Spaghetti-O for an arm.  All six outfielders were terrible.

The 'Hounds pulled it out 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th with a walkoff double.  Only played 7 because of the double dip.

Left after the game, got in the car, drove back to the hotel and was there before it was dark.

22 skins total.

Not a bad way to spend an evening, eh boys?

I'm sure everyone is excited about Opening Day as I am, and I hope that we can have another OWA Opening Day Eggstravaganza.  However, unforunately, I will not be able to be the bag man for tickets as I have in the past.  If anyone is wanting to jump in and save the day, please speak up.  You can pm me if you need some details of what I've done the last few years.

How can you not move Huff/Jimerson to 3B in the 9th tonight?  No excuse.  You statgeeks can rant and rave all you want about wasting outs, but the simple lack of fundemental baseball strategy has cost the Astros two wins in the last three games.

How the fuck does Jason Lane let that ball get behind him?  If he's not tripping over his dick out there, no way Spezio scores.  And if Aubrey Huff doesn't lollygag a ball into a triple earlier...

Damn I'm getting pissed at the Astros outfield defense.

Well boys and girls, you just saw a lack of Little League fundementals cost the Astros a win.

I can hear Phil Garner now....[jimmydugan] Preston, what team do you play for?  Good because I was just wondering why YOU would throw home, when we've got a 2-RUN LEAD!!  You let the tying run get on second base, and we lost the lead BECAUSE OF YOU!!! [/jimmydugan]

For a physics lesson.   If he's said it once in the last two days, he's said it 10 times about the ball not traveling far in the heat and humidity.  Memo to Keith: hot air is less dense than cool air.  Humid air is less dense than dry air.  Baseballs travel farther in hot humid air, like we have in Houston in June.

First rumblings about the "blacked out" names on Jason Grimsley's file are starting to be felt.  Sammy Sosa is purportedly one of the names on the list.  Another is Chris Mihfield, former strength and conditioning coach for the Royals and longtime personal trainer to one Pujols, Albert.  This will get interesting.

If you are going to be at the softball game, I can give them to you then.  If not, let me know how you want them delivered.  I can mail or we can work something else out, up to and including giving them to you at Queso Fest prior to the OD game.  Just let me know how you want to play it.

I have tickets for the following, but have yet to receive any funds:

Andyzipp
Limey (you actually only owe me for one ticket ($34), though I have two for you.  I'll explain)
Anhkur

Again, if you're going to be at the softball game, you can pay me then and I'll give you your tickets.  If not, please contact me to make arrangements.

I currently have one extra ticket.  First come, first serve.  Please respond here if you want it.

« on: February 08, 2006, 06:07:25 pm »
OK, since it seemed like everyone wanted to go through with OD, even with a 2-game minimum, I went ahead and got us the tickets.

The total cost per "ticket" is $34.  This includes one ticket to Opening Day, Monday April 3rd, in Section 334 (lower Terrace Deck) and one ticket for Saturday September 23rd, in the Mezzanine.  I went ahead and got different seats for the second game to try to minimize the overall cost.

So far on the confirmed list, I have:

HH (2)
Neil T (4)
The Raups (4)
Limey (2)
gleach (2)
pravata (1)
Andyzipp (1)
Ankh (2)
Budgirl (2)
mihoba (3)
homer (2)
Jane Doe (2)

I have a few left, so if anyone wants one, first come first serve.  REPLY HERE, NOT IN A PM TO ME.

Now, if you're name's on the list, please PM me for an address to send funds or some other arrangements.  The sooner the better, as I've already had to pay for them in advance.  We can work out distribution however you want.  I should receive the tickets in approximately 2-3 weeks.

Talk Zone / Important Opening Day Info: Please Read!
« on: February 07, 2006, 01:47:38 pm »
I have been informed by the Astros that we cannot get group seating for a single game this year.  You must purchase at least two games.  So that means if we want group seating for Opening Day, we have to also purchase the same group seating for another game.  So we have to ask ourselves a couple of questions:

1.  Do we still want to try to get OWA group seating for Opening Day, knowing we have to also purchase a second game at $20-something a pop?

2.  What would be the second game that interests people?

3.  For those wanting to come into town for just Opening Day, would you be willing to either come to another game or pay for that second game anyway?

Our other option would be to try to get group tickets when single game seats go on sale on Friday, but the likelihood of getting 30+ seats together would be virtually zilch.

This definitely throws a monkey in the wrench, so let me hear from you.  We have to decide by Thursday, February 9th.

Also, I'd need to start collecting money for both games ASAP, as I would have to lay out approx. $1,500 of my own money to secure the tickets.

Sorry about the late notice, but I was just informed today of this 2-game requirement.

Well, the Holidays are past us, bowl games are completed, and old man winter has come and gone.  That can only mean one thing in Houston....January.  That also means that tickets for Opening Day will go on sale in just a few short weeks.  Once again, OrangeWhoopAss will host its Opening Day activities complete with the annual QuesoFest followed by the game itself.

This years opener will be on Monday, April 3rd, at 6:05 in the pm.  The defending National League  Champions  will be taking on the Florida Marlins.

I will soon post the info for how to join us for our little get together, so make your plans soon!

Talk Zone / Oldes HOFer dies...
« on: November 01, 2005, 10:58:51 am »
Didn't see this on Sunday, but Al Lopez, the oldest current HOFer died Sunday at the age of 97.

Lopez broke in with the Brooklyn Robins in 1928 and played 20 seasons with the Robins/Dodgers, Braves, Pirates, and Indians.  He ended his playing career with the most games ever caught in a career, a record that stood for 40 years.

After retiring, Lopez became a successful manager, skippering the Indians to a then-record 111 wins in 1954 and managed the last Chicago White Sox team (prior to this year) to reach the World Series, the "Go-Go Sox" of 1959.  If you don't think that's an accomplishment, just consider that from 1949-1964, those were the only teams not named the New York Yankees to win a pennant.

He is also the last surviving Major Leauge player to play a game prior to 1930.

On a side note, I once got a chance to meet Al Lopez when I was a kid.  He was a nice guy, talked to us kids for an hour.

You CANNOT use the TalkZone to scalp World Series tickets.  I don't care who bought them or what you paid for them.  I don't care that you subsequently won the ticket lottery, nor the fact that there might not be a Game 5.  If you've got extra tickets to the game and want to give them away, fine.  But do not, I repeat DO NOT come in here offering a $45 ticket for the low, low price of $1,200 or some such shit.  It's illegal, it violates one of the main standards of site useage which keeps us out of MLB's lawyers grips, and it's just downright disrepectful to other members of this community.  NO MORE!

Talk Zone / Help Needed...
« on: October 20, 2005, 01:21:50 pm »
The Astros will play in their first ever World Series.  That means only one thing as far as Mrs. Hawk is concerned....I have to get a tatoo.

I'm thinking about several choices:

1.  A baseball, plain and simple, or

2.  An Astros logo.

If it's the latter, what shall I pick?  I've always been partial to the "H" in the star, which plays along with my name as well.  But they won it with the "open star" logo.

Either way, it's going at the top of my arm
