Springer walks, Altuve singles, and Bregman delivers the SF.

Alvarez then drives one to the LCF wall, caught against the scoreboard, but for reasons I’m not even sure he can explain, Altuve is already halfway to third and is doubled off first easily.

Bottom 1:

Talk Zone / Crane
« on: May 14, 2019, 03:48:19 pm »
I was thinking about Jim Crane as I read an article on the Rockets’ upcoming offseason.

I know that Fertitta came in and told Daryl Morey to do everything he could to get under the luxury tax. (This was a request Les Alexander never made.) Doing so meant letting go of the team’s best role players like Trevor Ariza. I have no doubt it’s a good business decision, but it’s not what you do to go all-out for a championship.

Crane, on the other hand, appears perfectly willing to cut the checks to Luhnow and then stay out of the way. When it push came to shove on the Verlander deal, Crane wasn’t letting $4M stand in the way. That was the difference between a division flag and a World Series flag.

When Marwin and Keuchel came up in another thread, go back to when Crane said “We want to keep them here.” I have no doubt that’s true. Crane trusted his GM to make an honest assessment about whether paying them what they wanted would make the team better in the long run.

All of this to say - there was a certain amount of rending of garments when Jim Crane bought the team. Turns out we couldn’t ask for much more in an owner.

Talk Zone / Talk me off the ledge
« on: December 13, 2018, 12:34:25 pm »
All I see so far is an offseason going very badly.

Keuchel and Marwin are good as gone - at least that was expected.
Morton's departure is a crucial blow and the alternatives in the market for the rotation are dwindling rapidly.
Chirinos does nothing to reassure me at the catcher situation, and I didn't consider Stassi's audition for the full-time gig a success.
We just lost two decent prospects to Rule 5.

Convince me this offseason is going better than I think, because it seems pretty damn bleak so far.

Loved Saturday's game, finished by jumping off the couch for the winning run. Followed it with a lovely date with Mrs. MM. Started feeling a little under the weather during the date, figured I'd just turn in early and head off whatever it was.

This is the first I've been out of bed since. Woke up Sunday with a 104 fever, got diagnosed with the flu.

Game three was just one of those games, but I'm confident we never would have let yesterday slip away if I were anywhere near 100%.

Please send thoughts, prayers, antivirals, chicken soup, or whatever works my way ASAP so we can pound the Yankees today.

dRangers up 1-0 on an Odor 2-out triple, and some immense all around Dick-stepping follows:

Gallo hits a drive to RF. Reddick leaps at the wall and misses by at least a foot. Springer finally runs it down and throws to Correa with Gallo safely on third. Correa lobs the ball to home, only to realize that NOBODY IS THERE. Gallo belatedly breaks for home, Musgrove scrambles and makes a backhand flip and McCann gets the tag down. Bannister then argues for an eternity.

Two pitches before the GS: "There's basically no excuse for ever throwing this guy a fastball."

Talk Zone / Expectations
« on: May 22, 2016, 04:49:12 pm »
So i decided to compare everyone to their Baseball Prospectus PECOTA projections - which not only give an average, but percentiles (90th, 80th, etc.) so that you can get an idea of just how far above or below expectations each player has performed.  This isn't a perfect exercise, but I'll try to balance BA, OBP, and SLG for each hitter.  "50" means, essentially, meeting expectations

Altuve: 90+
Rasmus: 60/90/60 - give him a 70
Springer: 50 across the board
Castro: 30/90/40... call it a 50+

Thus ends the hitters meeting expectations.

Correa: 20/70/20... could generously be given a 40
White: 20/10/70... again, could generously be a 40
Marwin: 20/30/60... another sub-40
Gattis: 40/60/20 = 40
Valbuena: sub 10, across the board
Tucker: sub 10, across the board
Marisnick: sub 10, across the board
Gomez: subterranean across the board

That's 4 guys not meeting expectations, and another 4 that have fallen short of BP's worst case projections.

Pitchers are a little easier to handle, going by ERA alone:

Harris: 90+
Devenski: 90+
Feldman: 70+
Neshek: 70
Fister: 50

Gregerson: 40
Sipp: 20
Fiers: 20
Feliz: 10
Giles: sub-10
Fields: sub-10
McHugh: sub-10
McCullers: sub-10/Inc.
Keuchel: sub-10

So that's 9 guys on the team meeting expectations, with only 3 of those being wildly pleasant surprises.

If you look at the others, you have more players that have fallen short of the worst-case scenario than have actually met expectations.

I don't see how you blame the manager or the GM for this.  Nobody could have foreseen half the team just completely falling to pieces.

I couldn't believe my eyes seeing this as I wrote the recap, but it's true.  Let's not debate the merits of OPS, but just use it as a shorthand for what we're all seeing:

It's no surprise that Altuve is leading the team.  That his OPS is now over 1.100 shocked me.
Rasmus, Springer, and Correa are all bunched around .850.  Pretty good, although you might hope for slightly higher from the latter two.

Want to guess who's next on the team?

Jason Castro.  At .747.  The guy who was hitting sub-.150 two weeks ago.

FanGraphs: The Beginning of the End for Pitch-Framing?

Excellent discussion of why "elite" pitch-framers like Conger have fallen off the past couple years - I thought this was the most relevant piece:

Quote
The theory would go like this: more than ever before, umpires are aware of good framers. They’re aware that good framers can get strikes out of the zone, so then that introduces a bias. Umpires don’t want to be wrong, and their bosses don’t want for them to be wrong. It’s not like an umpire would watch a pitch, then think about a call, then think about the catcher, then change his mind. These decisions happen way too fast, but you’d just have to believe there’s some effect. A different call out of every 10, or 20, or 30, or 50. Something that would show up in bigger samples. It makes sense that, if umpires became aware of great pitch-framing, they might become aware of ways to call the game that have a little less to do with how a catcher moves. And you have to think framing has been on their radar.

Talk Zone / Scattershooting on the season around the league:

1.  Miggy Cabrera - 4 batting titles in 5 years.  AND he's right handed.  AND he's a power hitter.  We need to take some deep appreciation of watching this guy play.

2.  Clayton Kershaw - 16-7, 2.13, 302 strikeouts.  First time 300 has been reached since 2002(?).  Likely Cy Young first place votes: zero.

3.  Boston quietly did one hell of a job of dousing their tire fire.  But by finishing 78-84, they moved out of the bottom 10 and thus would lose a pick on any qualifying FA they sign this winter.

4.  I flat-out, in the core of my soul, hate the Co-ards.  But damn do I respect them.  100 wins after all of those injuries, especially with the Pirates and Cubs sitting in your division?  Damn.

5.  I didn't appreciate before this weekend how good AJ Pollock is.

6.  If we can get past the damnyankees, I'm much happier facing KC than I would be TOR.  I think the Blue Jays are about to Hulksmash everyone on their way to the championship.

Beer and Queso / Fantasy baseball 2015: Scoresheet
« on: January 12, 2015, 09:46:08 am »
I may have asked this in the past, but here goes:

I'm interested in starting an OWA Scoresheet league for 2015.  For those unfamiliar with Scoresheet, it has similarities to fantasy baseball, in that you draft a team, but it is based on simulating actual games - so things like fielding, baselining, errors, etc. count.  Instead of having categories that compile points for your team, you get actual results (scoresheets, box scores, statistics, etc.) from the simulated head-to-head games for that week, and you play a 162 game season.  In addition, you can choose to have a continuing league, which means that after your first year's draft, you can keep a certain number of players for your team - so drafting rookies and prospects is emphasized.

Scoresheet is running a special for $29 per team for this year - www.scoresheet.com.  Reply to this thread or PM me if you're interested.

PS - it's more competitive if you do an AL-only or NL-only league if there are 12 teams or less, so I'd look at AL-only unless the majority votes otherwise.

Talk Zone / Next year's team
« on: September 11, 2014, 08:33:22 am »
Am I wrong to think that, with a few tweaks, this team could be a wild card contender next year?

Move #1:
Astros send Dexter Fowler and Brett Oberholtzer to the Boston Red Sox for Garin Cecchini and Burke Badenhop.

Move #2:
Astros sign Luke Gregerson to a 2 year, $14M contract

Move #3:
Astros sign Japanese pitcher Kenta Maeda as their "splash" signing, with Jim Crane announcing that the resolution of the CSNH situation allows this flexibility.

2015
C  -  Castro
1b -  Singleton
2b -  Altuve
3b -  Cecchini
SS - Gonzalez/Correa (mid-season call-up)
LF  - Grossman
CF - Marisnick
RF - Springer
DH - Carter
Bench: Corporan/Stassi, insert veteran 1b signing here, Dominguez, Presley/Santana

SP:
1. Keuchel
2. McHugh
3. Maeda
4. Feldman
5. Tropeano

BP:
Qualls, Gregerson, Folty, Badenhop, Sipp, and Fields

That's easily a plus-.500 team.  Possibly a playoff contender.

You'd think the GM comes down and makes it a point to talk to the staff about it that at we need to start protecting our own and doing things differently. Probably a week later Goldy gets dinged, and no retaliation. It's like "wait a minute."

Some [pitchers], contractually, it's tough to move. But I think come spring training, it will be duly noted that it's going to be an eye for an eye and we're going to protect one another.

If not, if you have options there's ways to get you out of here and you don't follow suit or you don't feel comfortable doing it, you probably don't belong in a Diamondbacks uniform.

Cody Clark, C, Astros (MLB Houston).
I focus this article on the major prospects in the minor leagues. However, the goal for every single player in the minor leagues is to eventually get the call to the big leagues. Obviously, not every player is able to put on a major-league uniform, but everyone is always working toward this end. Clark is a player who bounced around the minor leagues looking for a shot, even spending time in independent baseball, consistently working on his game to hopefully one day get the opportunity to get to have that talk with his coach telling him it is his time and he is going to The Show. Clark is a special case, because all of the sources I spoke with could not stop talking about his work ethic. Clark even went to the Australian Winter League at the age of 30 just to get at-bats. The feeling Clark will get by putting on the jersey and being in the clubhouse, and the experience he will get playing the game that he has loved since childhood at the highest level makes everything worthwhile. In just about every one of the Updates I write about guys who are essentially no-doubt major leaguers, and that is fine. But on this night, I would like to honor Cody Clark. This one’s for you Cody—you are living the dream. Soak it up, and know that the work you put in is respected.

Dodgers are talking to Astros about a trade that would send Jed Lowrie to the Dodgers, with minor-leaguers Zach Lee and Garrett Gould to HOU.

One source places odds of Lowrie/Lee Astros-Dodgers deal is about 50-50 right now.

Sources are saying that there could be others involved in Lowrie/Lee-Gould discussions between Dodgers and Astros.

Lowrie, of course, would give Dodgers options at third base and shortstop. Having a strong season, and hitting for power -- which LAD needs.

Zach Lee was LA's #1 prospect according to BP, Gould #5.  Both are RHP (starters), with Lee projected as "star level".

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Frank McCourt today announced an agreement under which Guggenheim Baseball Management LLC (“GBM”) will acquire the Los Angeles Dodgers for $2 billion upon completion of the closing process.  The purchasing group includes Mark R. Walter as its controlling partner, as well as Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Peter Guber, Stan Kasten, Bobby Patton and Todd Boehly.  Mr. McCourt and certain affiliates of the purchasers will also be forming a joint venture, which will acquire the Chavez Ravine property for an additional $150 million.

The Los Angeles Dodgers stated, “This transaction underscores the Debtors’ objective to maximize the value of their estate and to emerge from Chapter 11 under a successful Plan of Reorganization, under which all creditors are paid in full.”

Frank McCourt stated, “This agreement with Guggenheim reflects both the strength and future potential of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and assures that the Dodgers will have new ownership with deep local roots, which bodes well for the Dodgers, its fans and the Los Angeles community.  We are delighted that this group will continue the important work we have started in the community, fulfilling our commitment to building 50 Dream Fields and helping with the effort to cure cancer.”

Earvin “Magic” Johnson stated, “I am thrilled to be part of the historic Dodger franchise and intend to build on the fantastic foundation laid by Frank McCourt as we drive the Dodgers back to the front page of the sports section in our wonderful community of Los Angeles.”

The Astros acquired starter Kyle Weiland from the Red Sox for a reliever, tweets ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

Weiland, 25, struggled in 24 2/3 innings in his Red Sox debut this year.  At Triple-A, he posted a 3.58 ERA, 8.8 K/9, 3.9 BB/9, and 0.7 HR/9 in 128 1/3 innings.  A third-round pick in 2008, Baseball America ranked Weiland 20th among Red Sox prospects prior to the season.  BA says the former Notre Dame closer "relishes pitching inside" and his "best pitch is a low-90s fastball that peaks at 95 but is most notable for its hard sink."

Talk Zone / Stark on Wandy
« on: August 09, 2011, 02:55:18 pm »
One of the questions reverberating around baseball since the trading deadline is: Why the heck did the Astros sign Wandy Rodriguez to that three-year, $32.5 million contract a little over six months ago if there was ANY chance they'd be trying to unload him -- and that contract -- a few months later?

It's easy to say now that things are different, because this team is 39 games under .500, sinking fast and about to get sold. But the club was ALREADY up for sale. And Jim Crane -- a man whose No. 1 item on the to-do list is cutting payroll -- was considered the most likely buyer even then.

"That contract just doesn't make sense now," said an executive of one club. "It's OK if you intend to keep him. But not if you're in a feeding frenzy to slash payroll."

Initially, it looked as if the Astros were attempting to trim the payroll for next season from about $71 million to $60 million. But now, with the completion of the sale of the team only a week away, other clubs are hearing Crane might attempt to drive that number down to $50 million or even below. And they can't reach that figure without moving Wandy Rodriguez.

"I just don't get it," said the same exec quoted above. "When you give a guy a contract like that, you're basically saying, 'We're not going to trade you.' Well, they're not saying that anymore."

None other than our old friends at BP:

Quote
Ed Wade is a much-derided GM about to preside over  a 110-loss season, something that only 13 other modern-era team architects have done before (there have been 15 teams that had 110 or more losses, but George Weiss got to preside over three of them—Weiss is in the Hall of Fame, so there’s still hope for Wade); no doubt he intended to build a historic club, but this probably wasn’t what he had in mind. Despite this, when you take an organization’s top two prospects for a player as basically decent as Hunter Pence is, you deserve credit. Wade also deserves kudos for long being a believer in Michael Bourn, who was drafted on his watch in Philadelphia, acquired by him for Houston, and patiently nurtured through a .229/.288/.300 season in his first year as a regular. Bourn rewarded Wade over the last three years, and now he rewards the Astros by returning four players. Perhaps Wade could have extracted more from the Braves and held out for one of their best prospects. Even if he had been able to do that, it would have cost the Astros desperately-needed volume. Just because the players coming in weren’t the Braves’ top prospects doesn’t mean they aren’t among the Astros’ top prospects. No one player can cure the Astros; competence at multiple positions will bring them back to respectability faster than having one Superman on the team.[/url]

Quote
The Astros have been meeting the past few days to discuss their trade possibilities, which is difficult because GM Ed Wade is in a maze between ownerships. "Right now," says a GM, "they want for Rodriguez what the Rockies want for Ubaldo."

Quote
What would it take, with a club-friendly contract? One or two Major League level players, one of who would move into the Colorado rotation, and at least two prime prospects. In other words, if the Yankees want Jimenez, the Rockies would need a Major League starter, Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances and a bat.

Talk Zone / Stark on Astros
« on: May 24, 2011, 09:24:59 pm »
Quote
If we had to pick one club in baseball that has the look of a sure-fire seller in July, we'd pick the Astros. But there are two things to remember: 1) As GM Ed Wade pointed out, the Astros actually have a better record this year (18-30) than they had in late May last year (17-34) -- and last year's team went 59-52 the rest of the way. 2) Until the Astros' sale to Jim Crane is approved (most likely sometime in July), Wade can't even have a conversation with the new owner about his philosophy on team-building.

But at a time in which his club is obviously rebuilding, Wade says he expects to take the same approach this July that he took last July: "Anything that builds the type of depth that will get us where we need to be, it would make sense to explore."

Wade declined comment on all specifics. But other clubs believe he'd gladly listen to bids on the likes of Brett Myers, Wandy Rodriguez, Clint Barmes and Bill Hall. (Carlos Lee's no-trade clause keeps him out of that mix.) As for just about anyone else, Wade said, "We're going to be very protective of our younger players."

 • So where would a guy such as Hunter Pence (28, and three years away from free agency) fit in that mix? We've heard rumblings of early interest from the Braves, Orioles and Phillies. But an executive of a fourth club says he believes there's a "1 million percent chance" Wade would need, essentially, a job-saving haul in return to even consider trading Pence.

"If you're Jim Crane walking in the door," the exec wondered, "how can you trade the one guy on your team who represents that part of Texas -- a blue-collar, hard-nosed player?"

• Meanwhile, continuing rumors of the Phillies' interest in Pence appear to be exaggerated. Clubs that have spoken with the Phillies report they're doing no more at the moment than compiling a shopping list of potentially available bats. But since their payroll is wedged right up against the luxury-tax threshold, they've been telling other teams they can only talk about hitters making no more than about half of Pence's $6.9 million.

If you (like me) had been turned off of the increasingly holier-than-thou, bitter, everybody sucks approach of BP the past few years, I encourage you to pick up a copy of their 2011 book.

No filler articles.
Surprisingly positive comments.
A cleaner look.

For examples from the Astros:
- they actually praise Wade has the architect of the Phillies rebirth, and make clear that he was not allow to do the same for the Astros for years by Drayton;
- state the possibility that Mills is part of the reason the team outperforms expectations;
- compliment Keppinger for "putting the bat on the ball better than nearly anyone in the league".

Their argument for the Astros to backslide this year - and it's valid, certainly - boils down to:

- starting pitching is good, but not elite;
- bullpen is not bad, but is about average;
- fielding is too poor to create a Padres-type pitching/defense resurgence;
- no hitter in the lineup is expected to be above-average for their position (Pence is right at the league average for RF)

6. Don Mattingly. I switched to "yes'' a few years ago because because he 1) was one of the best players in the game for a five-year period (and presumably would have continued along those lines had it not been for a bad back), 2) has career stats very similar to Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett, who was a no-brainer for me, and 3) is one of the very best defensive first basemen of alltime.

Mattingly MVP votes:
1984 - 5th
1985 - 1st

8. Jeff Bagwell. The numbers were plenty good (449 home runs, .408 OBP, .540 slugging percentage) and he'll merit reconsideration next year. I won't argue if he gets in, but I'd prefer a chance to reconsider in future years.

I've been a BP subscriber for several years.  They used to have fairly useful analysis, and commentary that was at least worth a read.

No more.  My subscription will expire without renewal after this latest joke of an article.

They have been running a "GM For a Day" series, on what they would do to improve various teams.  This author didn't even pretend to try:

Quote
Top 10 things I would do if I were the general manager of the Astros:

10. Find out whether being Astros GM gives you enough cachet to get a date with a Texans cheerleader.

9. If so, treat her to a romantic candlelit picnic on Tal's Hill.

8. Call every member of the 1969-1972 teams until I had learned all the words to the rude songs they used to sing about Harry Walker.

7. Cook and eat Brett Wallace.

6. Indulge in frequent puns juxtaposing Jason Bourgeois with the works of Karl Marx, things like, “Jeff could play more for us if he could hit, but despite being Bourgeois, he doesn’t own the means of production.”

5. Draft some really unconventional players so that Michael Lewis will write a book about me and Brad Pitt will star in the movie of my life.

4. Campaign for reintroduction of the Dead Ball Era so that my offense doesn’t stick out as badly.

3. See if my resume is now good enough to get me hired by a real team.

2. Hope that Carlos Lee experiences a sudden burst of retirement.

1.  Kill myself.

I would like to stop the article right there, but no doubt you would like to hear my brilliant plan for bringing the Astros back to the postseason for the first time since 2005...

Unfunny, lacking in originality or objectivity, poorly edited, and uninformative.

Hope they won't miss my money too much.

Beer and Queso / In honor of Saturday's impending Longhorn doom
« on: October 13, 2010, 11:58:07 am »
I give to you this classic, from Nebraska's lone Big 12 win over the Horns:

*****

A chronology of events for Saturday, December 4, 1999, and the early morning hours of Sunday, December 5, 1999:

6:00 AM - Arise, play the Eyes of Texas and Texas Fight at full-freaking blast

6:20 AM - Get in car, drive to New Braunfels

7:30 AM - Tee off (me and a buddy were the FIRST tee-time of the morning)

8:50 AM - Turn 9 (crack open first beer)

8:53 AM - Crack open second beer

8:58 AM - Crack open...(you get the idea)

10:30 AM - Finish 18 (holes, as well as beers), sign scorecard for smoooooth 95

10:35 AM - Headed for San Antonio

10:50 AM - Buy three 18-packs for pre- and post-game festivities

11:10 AM - We decide we don't have enough booze, so we double-back to a liquor store and buy the good
ol' 750 ml plastic bottle "Traveler" Jim Beam

11:50 AM - Arrive at the tailgate spot. Awesome day. Not a single cloud in the sky. About 70 degrees.

11:55 AM - I decide that we're going to kick the shit out of Nebraska.

11:56 AM - I tell my first Nebraska fan to go fuck himself.

12:15 PM - The UT band walks by on the way to the Alamodome. We’re on the second floor of a two-story parking garage on the corner (a couple hundred of us). We're hooting and hollering like wild men. The band doubles back to the street right below us and serenades us with Texas Fight and The Eyes of Texas. AWESOME MOMENT.

12:25 PM - In the post-serenade serendipity, 50-100 grown men are bumping chests with one another, each and every one of them now secure and certain of the fact that we are going to kick the shit out of Nebraska.

1:00 PM - The Nebraska band walks by on the way to the Alamodome. Again, we hoot and holler like wild men. Again, the band doubles back and stops right below us to serenade us, this time, however, with the Nebraska fight songs. *Although somewhat impressed by their spirit and verve, we remain convinced that we are going to kick the shit out of Nebraska.

1:30 PM - I begin the walk to the Alamodome, somehow managing to stuff the "Traveler" and 11 cans of beer into my pants.

1:47 PM - I am in line surrounded by Nebraska fans. They are taunting me. I am taunting back, still certain that we are going to kick the shit out of Nebraska. I decide to challenge a particularly vocal Nebraska fan to play what I now call and will forever be remembered as "Cell-Phone Flop Out." Remember flop out for a dollar? The rules are similar. I tell this Nebraska jackass that if he’s so confident in his team, he should "flop out" his cell phone RIGHT NOW and make plane reservations to Phoenix for the Fiesta Bowl. And then I spoke these memorable words: "And not those damn refundable tickets, either! You request those non-refundable, non-transferable sons-of-bitches!" He backs down. He is unworthy. I call Southwest Airlines and buy two tickets to Phoenix, non-refundable and non-transferable. Price: $712. He is humbled. He lowers his head in shame. I raise my cell phone in triumph to the cheers of hundreds of Texas fans. I am KING and these are my subjects. I distribute the 11 beers in my pants to the cheering
masses. I RULE the pre-game kingdom.

2:34 PM - Kickoff. Brimming with confidence, I open the Traveler and pour my first stiffy.

2:45 PM - I notice something troubling: Nebraska is big. Nebraska is fast. Nebraska is very pissed off at Texas.

3:01 PM - The first quarter mercifully ends. 9 yards total offense for Texas. Zero first downs for Texas. I'm still talking shit. I pour another stiffy from the Traveler.

3:36 PM - Four minutes to go in the first half: the Traveler is a dead soldier. I buy my first $5 beer from the Alamodome merchants. While I am standing in line, a center snap nearly decapitates Major Applewhite and rolls out of the end zone. Safety.

3:56 PM - Halftime score: Nebraska 15, Texas 0. I wish I had another Traveler.

4:11 PM - While urinating next to a Nebraska fan in the bathroom at halftime, I attempt to revive the classic Brice-ism from the South Bend bathroom: "Hey, buddy, niiiiiiiiice cock." He is not amused.

4:21 PM - I buy my 2nd and 3rd $5 beer from the Alamodome merchants.. I share my beer with two high school girls sitting behind me. Surprisingly, they are equipped with a flask full of vodka. I send them off to purchase Sprites, so that we may consume their vodka. I have not lost faith. Nebraska is a bunch of pussies.

4:51 PM - No more vodka. The girls sitting behind me have fled for their lives. I purchase two more $5 beers from the Alamodome merchants.

5:18 PM - Score is Nebraska 22, Texas 0. I am beginning to lose faith. This normally would trouble me, but I am too drunk to see the football field.

5:27 PM - I call Southwest Airlines: "I'm sorry, sir. Those tickets have been confirmed and are non-refundable and non-transferable."

5:37 PM - I try to start a fight with every person behind the concession counter. As it turns out, the Alamodome has a policy that no beer can be sold when there is less than 10 minutes on the game clock. I am enraged by this policy. I ask loudly: "Why the fuck didn't you announce last call over the fucking PA system??!!"

5:49 PM - Back in my seats, I am slumped in my chair in defeat. All of a sudden, the Texas crowd goes absolutely nuts. "Whazzis?," I mutter, awaking from my coma, "Iz we winnig? Did wez scort?" Alas, the answer is no, we were not winning and we did not score. The largest (by far) cheer of the day from the Texas faithful occurred when the handlers were walking back to the tunnel and Bevo stopped to take a gargantuan shit all over the letters "S", "K", and "A" in the "Nebraska" spelled out in their end zone. I cheer wildly. I pick up the empty Traveler bottle and stick my tongue in it. I am thirsty.

6:16 PM - Nebraska fans are going berserk as I walk back to the truck. I would taunt them with some off-color remarks about their parentage, but I am too drunk to form complete sentences. With my last cognitive thought of the evening, I take solace in the fact that if we had not beaten them in October, they would be playing Florida State for the national championship.

6:30 PM - Back in the car. On the way back to Austin for the 8:00 Texas-Arizona tip off. We can still salvage the day! I crack open a beer. It is warm. I don't care.

7:12 PM - We have stopped for gas. I am hungry. I go inside the store. I walk past the beer fridge. I notice a Zima. I've never had a Zima. I wonder if it's any good. I pull a Zima from the fridge. I twist the top off and drink the Zima in three swallows. Zima sucks. I replace the empty bottle in the fridge.

7:17 PM - There is a Blimpie Subs in the store. I walk to where the ingredients are, where the person usually makes the sub. There is no one there. I lean over the counter and scoop out half a bucket of black olives. I eat them. I am still hungry. I lean further over the counter and grab approximately two pounds of Pastrami. I walk out of the store grunting and eating Pastrami. The patrons in the store fear me. I don't care.

8:01 PM - We are in South Austin. I have been drinking warm beer and singing Brooks and Dunn tunes for over an hour. My truck-mate is tired of my singing. He suggests that perhaps Brooks and Dunn have written other good songs besides "You're Going to Miss Me When I'm Gone" and "Neon Moon" and that maybe listening to only those two songs, ten times each was a bit excessive. Perhaps, he suggests, I could just let the CD play on its own. I tell him to fuck off and restart "Neon Moon."

8:30 PM - We arrive at the Erwin Center. My buddy, against my loud and profane protestations, parks on the top floor of a nearby parking garage. I tell him he's an idiot. I tell him we will never get out. I tell him we may as well pitch a fucking tent here. He ignores me. I think he's still pissed about the Brooks and Dunn tunes. I whistle "Neon Moon" loudly.

8:47 PM - I am rallying. I have 4 warm beers stuffed in my pants. We're going to kick the shit out of Arizona.

9:11 PM - Halftime score: Texas 31, Arizona 29. I am pleased. I go to the bathroom to pee for the 67th time today. I giggle to myself because of the new opportunity to do "the bathroom Brice." There are no Arizona fans in the bathroom. I am disappointed. I tell myself (out loud) that I have a "Niiiiiice cock." No one is amused but me.

9:41 PM - I walk to the bathroom while drinking Bud Light out of a can. Needless to say, they do not sell beer at the Erwin Center, much less Bud Light out of a can. An usher stops me: "Where did you get that, sir?" I tell him (no shit): "Oh, the cheerleaders were throwing them up with those little plastic foot balls. Would you mind throwing this away for me?" I take the last swig and hand it to him. He is confused. I pretend I'm going to the bathroom, but I run away giggling instead. I duck into some entrance to avoid the usher, who is now pursuing me. I sneak into a large group of people and sit down. The usher walks by harmlessly. I am giggling like a little girl. I crack open another can of Bud Light.

9:52 PM - I am lost. In my haste to avoid the usher, I have lost my bearings. I have no ticket stub. I cannot find my seats. Texas is losing.

10:09 PM - Texas is being screwed by the refs. I am enraged. I have cleared out the seats around me because I keep removing my hat and beating the surrounding chairs with it. A concerned fan asks if I’m OK and perhaps I shouldn't take it so seriously. I tell him to fuck off.

10:15 PM - After the fourth consecutive "worst fucking call I have EVER seen," I attempt to remove my hat again to begin beating inanimate objects. However, on this occasion I miscalculate and I thumbnail myself in my left eyelid, leaving a one-quarter inch gash over my eye. I am now bleeding into my left eye and all over my shirt. "Perhaps," I think to myself, "I'm taking this a bit seriously."

10:22 PM - I am standing in the bathroom peeing. I;m so drunk I am swaying and grunting. I have a bloody napkin pressed on my left eye. My pants are bloody. I have my (formerly) white shirt wrapped around my waist. I look like I should be in an episode of Cops.

10:43 PM - Texas has lost. I put my bloody white shirt back on my body and make my way for the exits. I am stopped every 20 seconds by a good Samaritan/cop/security guard to ask me why I am covered in blood, but I merely grunt incoherently and keep moving.

10:59 PM - With my one good eye, I have located the parking garage. I walk up six flights of stairs. . . promise that when I see my friend I will punch him in the face for making me walk up six flights of stairs. . . find the truck .. . . and collapse in a heap in the bed of the truck. I look around and notice that traffic is lined up all the way around the garage, six whole flights, and no one is moving . . . I take a nap.

11:17 PM - I awake from my nap. I see my friend in the driver's seat.. I lift my head to look out the bed of the truck and notice that traffic is lined up all the way around the garage, six whole flights, and no one is moving. I am too tired to punch my friend. I call my friend a "Stupid cocksucker."

11:31 PM - I lift my head to look out the bed of the truck and notice that traffic is lined up all the way around the garage, six whole flights, and no one is moving. I call my friend a "stupid cocksucker."

11:38 PM - I lift my head to look out the bed of the truck and notice that traffic is lined up all the way around the garage, six whole flights, and no one is moving. I call my friend a "stupid cocksucker."

11:47 PM - I lift my head to look out the bed of the truck and notice that traffic is lined up all the way around the garage, six whole flights, and no one is moving. I call my friend a "stupid cocksucker."

11:58 PM - I am jostled. The truck is moving. I lift my head to look out the bed of the truck and notice that traffic is beginning to move on the second floor. I jump out of the truck, walk to the edge of the parking facility, and pee off the sixth floor onto the street below. My friend looks at me like I just anally violated his minor sister. I turn around and pee on the front of his truck while singing the lyrics to "Neon Moon."

12:11AM - We are moving. We are out of beer. I jump from the truck and go from vehicle to vehicle until someone gives me two beers. I am happy. I return to my vehicle.

12:26 AM - We have emerged from the parking facility. We make our way to my apartment and find Ed sitting on the couch with a freshly opened bottle of Glenlivet on the coffee table in front of him. . . . . We are all going to die tonight.

12:59 AM - We have finished three-quarters of the bottle of Glenlivet. We decide it would be a wonderful idea to go dancing at PollyEsther's. Ed has to pee. He walks down the hall to our apartment and directly into the full-length mirror at the end of the hall, smashing it into hundreds of pieces. We giggle uncontrollably and leave for PollyEsther's.

1:17 AM - The PollyEsther's doorman laughs uncontrollably at our efforts to enter his club. "Fellas," he says in between his fits of spastic laughter, "I've been working this door for almost a year. I've been working doors in this town for almost 5 years. And I can honestly say that I ain't never seen three drunker motherfuckers than you three. Sorry, can't let you in." We attempt to reason with him. He laughs harder.

1:44 AM - We find a bar that lets us in. We take two steps in the door and hear "Last call for alcohol!" I turn to the group and mutter: "See, dat wasn't that fuckin' hard. Day don't fuckin' do that at the Awamo...the awaom...the alab....fuck it, that stadium we was at today..." We order 6 shots of tequila and three beers.

2:15 AM - Back on the street. We need food. We hail a cab to take us the two and one half blocks to Katz's. The cab fare is $1.60. We give him $10 and tell him to keep it.

2:17 AM - There is a 20-minute wait. We give the hostess $50. We are seated immediately.

2:25 AM - We order two orders of fried pickles, a Cobb salad, a bowl of soup, two orders of Blueberry blintzes, two Rueben sandwiches, a hamburger, two cheese stuffed potatoes, an order of fries, and an order of onion rings.

2:39 AM - The food arrives. We are all asleep with our heads on the table. The waiter wakes us up. We eat every fucking bit of our food. Most of the restaurant patrons around us are disgusted. We don't give a fuck. The tab is $112 with tip.

2:46 AM - I'm sleepy.

9:12 AM - I wake up next to a strange woman. She is the bartender at Katz's. She is not pretty.

As I understand it, Drayton McLane went to Milo and said, ''I want to honor you for your 65 years in broadcasting.''

''No thanks, Drayton,'' Milo said. ''I want the focus to be on the ballclub and not me. I don't have that kind of ego.''

''Milo,'' Drayton said, ''players come and go, games come and go, but you, Milo, are the one constant running through the Astros these last 26 years. I insist that we honor you.''

Milo, being a humble man, nevertheless accepted, and so the Astros honored him Wednesday afternoon before a 5-2 victory over the Cardinals. I'm not sure the conversation went exactly that way, but I'd be willing to bet Scrunchie's next paycheck I'm pretty close.

It's rule 8.06: "A second trip to the same pitcher in the same inning will cause this pitcher's automatic removal from the game. ... A manager or coach is considered to have concluded his visit to the mound when he leaves the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitcher's rubber."

Mattingly had left the mound, taken a couple steps, then turned back to speak to Loney. He heard home-plate umpire Adrian Johnson say "No, no, no." Without meaning to, Mattingly had gone back on the dirt and visited the mound twice, forcing a pitching change.

"I had a little bit of a feeling at that point," Mattingly said. "I'm aware of the rule. But again, I didn't realize, I kind of felt like I turned and just turned back around. Again, obviously, I guess, I guess I didn't."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy immediately jumped out of the dugout. Crew chief Tim McClelland said had Mattingly not stepped back on the dirt of the mound, it would not have been considered a second visit. It was truly a matter of inches.

Thus, Mattingly (managing b/c Torre had been ejected) forced a pitching change, pulling out his closer and putting in George Sherrill, who had already cleared outright waivers.

In a season like this, these things make me smile.

The following has to be most emblematic of the entitlement mentality of most of today's umpires:

Quote
Minutes after the game, Cuzzi said that he had not yet seen the replay. "I'll look at it, but I figured I'd eat first," he said. "(Blanco) made a decent attempt to put the tag on him. That's what it looked to me, and that's why I called him out."

So... which is worse?  "I'll look at it , but I figured I'd eat first"?  Or "(he) made a decent attempt to put the tag on him... and that's why I called him out"?

Hunter Pence's name hasn't popped up in many, if any, trade rumors this offseason, but he might be the most attractive bargaining chip that GM Ed Wade has in trying to infuse the Astros' roster with some desperately needed young talent. Wade isn't actively shopping Pence, but a lot of teams reportedly ask about him. While it might seem counterproductive to trade a 25-year-old outfielder with power who is not even eligible for arbitration until next winter and is under club control through 2013, consider that he would be a great fit for at least 10 teams: the Braves, Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees, Mets, Athletics, Cardinals, Mariners, Giants, and Rangers. Wade could entertain offers from so many different clubs because of Pence's affordability that he would certainly get a bundle in return if he astutely played the offers off each other. After firing manager Cecil Cooper late last season, Astros owner Drayton McLane made it clear that the heat is now on Wade, and making a big splash couldn't hurt the GM's job security.

I would have zero problem with opening up bidding on PENCE!!! at the meetings, especially given the glut of corner OFs in the system.

OK, class - what's wrong with this picture:

Quote
If there had been video of my typical New Year's during the '70s and '80s, it would have shown sunshine turning to twilight giving way to nightfall as I sat slack-jawed at my home in Hempstead, New York, in front of the television, surrounded by junk food, slowly melting progressively deeper into my couch. I considered it a badge of honor, the ability to watch game after game until my eyes nearly glazed over. What other pursuit could be such a test of endurance and laziness all at the same time?

The day always began with the Cotton Bowl, matching the champion of the dear departed Southwest Conference, usually Oklahoma or Texas, against some highly ranked at-large team. I can hear Pat Summerall's terse play-by-play even now. As that game wound down I switched channels to catch the beginning of the Rose Bowl on the West Coast, with the scene in Pasadena seeming so sparkly bright in the first quarter and bathed in the soft glow of evening by the fourth.

If you buy the endless supermarket tabloids/US weekly/whatever with them on the cover...
If you remotely give a damn and thereby keep feeding this endless cycle...

Seriously, please ask yourself "Why?  Why am I supporting this?  Aren't there 10,000 better things I could be doing with my life?"

This will be the first step towards getting these people off the news and into therapy.

BP actually has something positive to say about an Astro farmhand:

Quote
The Astros' first-round pick from last last year made his own jump last week, moving up to Double-A after compiling a .309/.399/.517 line at High-A Lancaster. The hitting has continued in the Texas League, as Castro is 6-for-16 in his first four games for the Hooks. As good as his offense has been, it's his work behind the plate that has been earning raves from scouts; he gunned down nearly 60 percent of opposing basestealers at Lancaster. Catchers with real value both offensively and defensively are rare commodities, and Castro is looking more and more as if he'll be in the big leagues sometime next year.

Talk Zone / Assorted interesting observations from Footer
« on: June 15, 2009, 09:29:15 am »
All from the blog:

Quote
Wesley Wright was sent to Triple-A Round Rock a couple of weeks ago mainly because he wasn't effective enough on the big league level. But his time spent down on the farm wasn't designed only for him to "work on things" -- he was also sent down to get stretched out to be more than a one-batter or one-inning pitcher. ... The Astros tabbed Wright as a reliever when they plucked him from the Dodgers organization during the Rule 5 draft in 2007, mainly because they had a need for a left-hander in the 'pen. But there appears to be a need for starting pitching these days, and perhaps Wright might fit the bill, someday.

Quote
Bud Norris is another interesting study. During Spring Training, several Astros evaluators said if Norris, the club's top pitching prospect, can develop the changeup and effectively use it as a quality third pitch, his future is probably as a starter. If it turns out he is more of a two-pitch pitcher, he could be looked at as a future candidate for the back end of the bullpen, possibly as a closer. As of now, his changeup is coming along nicely, and the Astros are still hopeful he can eventually turn into a top-of-the-rotation starter in the big leagues.

Quote
When he first announced his pending open-heart surgery during Spring Training, Aaron Boooooooooone sounded doubtful that he would play baseball again this year. But a little over two months into the season, Boooooooone has increased his level of optimism. The 36-year-old infielder hasn't ruled out a September comeback, assuming he stays on scheduled with his workouts and rehabs.

Quote
As for Castro, tabbing him as the starting catcher out of Spring Training next year might be a stretch. He'll be given the chance to compete for the job but I'm inclined to believe they might be looking for another stop-gap -- a la Pudge Rodriguez -- to give Castro more time to develop. I would not be surprised if Castro was called up at some point during the season, and he's moving up the ladder at a nice pace, but I suspect the Astros will want to give him something close to a full season at Triple-A before they'll think about making him the front-line starting catcher.

Talk Zone / One man's view of where this team stands
« on: May 26, 2009, 08:51:59 am »
Some folks that I repect greatly have posited that this team has the potential to be very good.

I respectfully disagree.

Let's look at this month.  I think we can agree that you've gotten out of Bourn, Tejada, Lee, Pence, and Pudge this month is about the mmaximum you could ever expect them to put up.  Despite this (and granted, Matsui has absolutely stunk up the joint), the are only middle of the pack in runs for May - 8th, to be exact.

Which isn't a huge issue if you're winning with your traditional Astros mix of pitching and defense.  But did anyone really think that this pitching staff could carry the team?  They have one good-to-great pitcher (Wandy), one good pitcher (Roy), and multiple Hail Marys.  As is the case with most Hail Marys, all of these have failed to connect.

Hampton?  Nothing.  No location, no command.
Ortiz?  Typically wild, which apparently was fine in Spring Training but unacceptable in real games.
Moehler?  Getting pummeled unmercifully.

There is no way to expect that this pitching staff will do anything but suffer all year long.  There is likewise no reason to expect that the lineup can excel to the extent that they can carry such a staff.

So in my view, it's time to move what you can.  Assuming returns to full health, the following would both have value and be willing/able to be traded:
Tejada
Valverde
Hawkins
Byrdak
Pudge

I don't know how much you can get, that's a topic for another day.  But in my view, this team needs to almost completely replace their infield, find a way to bridge the gap to Castro at catcher, and fill 3 rotation spots.  (2, if you're willing, as I am, to just leave Paulino out there and hope that he figures out how to harness his stuff.)

From her latest blog entry:

Quote
Rodriguez has been the Astros best pitcher this year -- by a landslide. He either has truly turned a corner and is finally living up to expectations -- at the age of 30 -- or, he's just on a really, really hot streak that could end at anytime. Whatever the case may be, had Cooper sent him out for a sixth inning -- and there was no reason not to, considering Wandy had only thrown 86 pitches and had logged more than 100 in two of his last three starts -- it would have sent a strong signal to his left-hander: I trust you, I believe in you, and even though you haven't been at your best today, I need one more inning from you and I know you'll come through.

Instead, Coop yanked him after five, turned to a taxed bullpen that was without the services of Chris Sampson and Tim Byrdak, and ended up with the win. But at what cost?

First, from the blog:

1.  Berkman is improving, says he is "100 percent" to play another exhibition this week.  Should be ready to go opening day.

2.  Coop gushing about Santangelo, without prompting, especially his skills as a receiver.  Footer says "It sure is getting interesting around here."  Is there a chance they would keep Santangelo over Q?

From her 1560 interview:

1.  Bullpen is set.  Only possibility is that they deal a reliever for a 3b and keep Arias in that place.

2.  She's heard "some people talking" about sending down Bourn, keeping Abercrombie, and having Erstad/Michaels platoon in CF, but doesn't consider that likely.

3.  She seemed to think Smith has the inside track on the backup INF job.  Says Maysonett's recent injuries are really setting him back in the battle to make the team.

From Chris(tina) Kahrl at BP:

Quote
Chad Paronto seems like a lock to win one spot in the pen, and Danny Graves—no, really—seems to have dug his way back out of retirement long enough to be taken seriously.

At least this is just completely misinformed.

Quote
As much as I loathe the idle jabbering about contraction—and the self-centered kleptomaniacal grabbery among fandom that it represents, as people bleat over how much they covet the players on other fans' teams, to the point of extermination—it's hard to argue that the Astros are involved in seriously operating a competitive team as opposed to giving Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt (and Lee, and Pence, and then we start getting in trouble) a full slate of teammates to play with.

Typically I would just shake this off with "fuck off, you have no clue what they're doing.  They were in the playoff hunt until a hurricane knocked them out."

Instead, she IMMEDIATELY contradicts herself - the next sentence!

Quote
As easy as it is to bash Ed Wade about the state of the present—and to perhaps be irked by some of his preferences—keep in mind that it was going to get really ugly very fast no matter who replaced Tim Purpura, and that the real measure by which to keep score following the Astros isn't what happens among the expendables on the big-league roster in the present, but how effectively they turn things around on the player development side of the equation.

So you understand the rpoblem, and yet still have the nerve to say that they are not seriously trying to compete?!?!?!

There is no reason to ever take seriously one word that this man/woman/whatever writes.

“Wherever they want me, I’ll be there 100 percent,” Tejada said. “If they want me to move to third, I’ll do it. I just want to be here. I’m a free agent after this year, and the No. 1 thing for me is that I want to be here.”

OK, so that period of my life went like this: I was the girl loved by everyone and no one all at once. You must know a girl like this. You can't understand why she is still single. Men adore her, profess their love before the chicken satay arrives; then the phone rings one day, and it's her telling you he left her. Or at least that's what you think she's trying to tell you, but the sobbing makes it harder to decipher the exact phrasing. Then she does that silent cry and you think the phone went dead, or worse, she went dead. Then the ten-second silence is broken by the phlegmy inhale and then more incoherent screeching. Yeah, that's me, the incoherent screecher.

I think this just intersected with Zipp's "Hey, It's Me" post.

• Ups and downs: We mentioned earlier in Rumblings that no team's payroll will rise more than the Phillies' payroll this winter. According to clubs that track payrolls, it looks as though only 10 other teams in the whole sport will see their payrolls head north:

Those 10 are the Cubs, Mariners and Astros from the top half of last year's payroll charts, and the Indians, Rockies, Marlins, Royals, A's, Pirates and Rays from the bottom half.

That means 19 teams are either projected to reduce their payroll or stay about the same. Last year, only eight teams cut payroll.

« on: September 22, 2008, 11:15:40 am »
Given the long drought since I was able to contribute anything of consequence, I thought I'd just consolidate all of my thoughts into one rambling post:

Yes, fuck Selig.  Yes, fuck Drayton.  But that's over, and the team has itself to blame for letting that combo beat them in Florida, too.

The next time you want to make the argument that Roy Oswalt is an ace pitcher, look back on that first inning in Florida.  The season was on the line in that game, and he ended it in the first inning, consistently pounding the strike zone against a team that will swing at ANYTHING.

Bad, bad time for a slump, Lance.

I could not be happier that the last week comes down to trying to chase down the hated steM for the Wild Card.  (Well, having to count on the Cubs to take out NY and MIL isn't all that fun.)

Matt Schaub is a very, very bad QB.  And I'm not sure that Gary Kubiak is much better as a coach.  In fact, I think that switching Kubiak and Mike Sherman might improve both teams.

Anyone voting for Carlos Delgado or Ryan Howard for MVP should lose their vote permanently.

Why isn't Lidge getting any Cy Young love?

I will continue to keep the faith this week.  Winning out against the Dickities and the Former Home of the Snivelers is possible.  The steM tripping over their own dicks is possible.  Every day that you can keep these hopes up is a treasure.

Glad to see everyone safe and sound.

The Astros' season is essentially a failure. They're not going to leapfrog three teams to win the NL wild card. They flat-out threw away their first-round draft pick, and if this draft was better than 2007's just because they signed more of their top selections, it did little to keep them out of the bottom few organizations in terms of overall talent. The Astros are old on the field and thin in the system, a combination that leads very quickly to the bottom of the standings for an extended stay.

Quote
Wade's misguided mandate from owner Drayton McLane was to win as many games as possible in the short term. He's done that; the Astros, projected by me to win 73 games (and -77 differential) and by PECOTA to win 72 (-82), have already won 74, on their way to more than 80. It's hard to say that Wade didn't do the job he was asked to do.

Win as many games as possible?  Perish the thought!

Quote
The Yankees and the Red Sox, the A's and the Angels, all set tones in the AL in the early part of the 2000s, forcing everyone to either build teams that could win 95 games, or abandon hope of contending.
Quote
The NL isn't inferior to the AL just by chance. It's inferior, to a large extent, by choice—the kind of choice that Drayton McLane made when he hired Ed Wade and told him to try to win in 2008, and the choice he'll make when he tells him to try and win in 2009.

World Champions since 2000:
AL - 4
NL - 3

So no, I'm not impressed by 74-66, or the eight-game winning streak, or Ty Wigginton's career month, or the fluke season by Brian Moehler. I see exactly what I saw five months ago: a team with little present and no future, deluding itself and its fans. That they've been successful in their modest goals does little to change the fact that those goals were the wrong ones, and reaching them will do more short-term damage to the organization than the kind of reality-check season that the 2008 Mariners have had could ever do

This clown is actually arguing that the 2008 Mariners have had a more successful season than the 2008 Astros?

Mark it down.  No opinion piece from Joe Sheehan is worth consideration.  Period.

The Astros and Dodgers are tied for the 14th-worst record in MLB at 59-59.  The Blue Jays are 16th at 60-59.

Why is this important?  Because right now, 1/2 game is the difference between losing your first-round pick for signing a type A free agent, and losing your second-rounder instead.

Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros
7 p.m., ESPN

The Cubs are clearly the new class of the N.L. Central, a perch from which the Astros are now far removed.  One of the reasons Chicago has recently opened up its lead in the division is starting right-hander Ryan Dempster, who is looking to stay hot by staying cool in steamy Houston.  And oh yeah, the hosts send Brian Moehler to the hill.

ESPN's production crew is going to feel awfully silly showing up to film Dempster staying cool in an empty MMPUS.

Watching PHI-STL, Joe Morgan starts describing the Loretta/Pence play from Saturday.

First of all, he starts with "there was a force play at the plate, Astros weren't aware of it."  Yes, Joe.  Mark Loretta, veteran of 14 years, did not understand that with the bases loaded, there is a force at the plate.

But then Joe compunds it with "the catcher took his foot of the plate, as you see, but if he had kept his foot on the plate, the runner would have been out, and Pence made have been out on interference."  Actually, Joe, what I see is that the BALL WAS ON THE FUCKING GROUND.  The catcher never once, even momentarily, had possession of that ball.

How in the name of Jimmy D is this man the lead baseball analyst for ESPN??

Talk Zone / Unsurprising Joe Morgan story

Courtesy of Uni watch:

Quote
It's not clear if the Pirates got permission from the league office for Parker's assorted face masks, although everyone seems to agree that the umpires never objected. But that's not to say everyone was in love with Parker's new headgear. At 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, he was already a fearsome presence on the base paths, and at least one middle infielder wasn't thrilled about him having the additional advantage of facial armor.

"I thought I could get hurt at second base if that thing hit my knee or hit me some other place," recalls Joe Morgan, who played second base for the Reds at the time. "When we played them [in mid-August] and he got on base, I made a point of telling the umpires that I didn't want him wearing that mask sliding into second base, because Dave always came in very hard. I was never afraid of that, but if he hit me with that helmet, I thought it could hurt me. I told 'em that if I got hurt, I was gonna sue 'em all. I'd already had my knees hurt in a clean play, and I didn't want to get hurt by some makeshift thing."

So at Morgan's request, Parker traded in his mask-equipped helmet for a regular helmet after reaching base on a walk on Aug. 15. Then he took his lead off first -- loitering with intent, you might call it.

"It just so happened that the next batter hit a ball to the shortstop, Dave Concepcion, which is just what I was hoping would happen, because Morgan had to cover second for the double play," says Parker. He pauses, laughs, and adds, "Well, of course I tried to kill him, because of the complaining. He jumped up and started yelling, 'Did you see that? He tried to kill me, he tried to kill me!'"

The Astros aren’t ready to be sellers yet, but they're getting many inquiries on a pair of bench players, infielder Mark Loretta and outfielder Darin Erstad.

Talk Zone / What if?
« on: July 11, 2008, 11:21:09 am »
Slow Friday topic:

Historians sometimes refer to the "counterfactual", which is fancy historian-speak for playing "what if?"  You know, little things like "What if the US had invaded Japan instead of dropping the bomb?", or things like that.

So for today - please describe your biggest Astros "what if", and how the change would have played out.

Mine:
WHAT IF Andy Pettitte were not injured in 2004?
- The Astros almost surely beat the Cardinals - this is what happens when you replace Munro with AP.
- The Astros' starting pitching gives the Red Sox a much tougher time.  Do they win the Series?  I'm not going to say for sure, but it was no sweep.
- Following the franchise's first WS appearance, Drayton does not have the stomach to push Hunsicker out.
- Hun tells Drayton up front that it is highly unlikely that they will sign Beltran.
- Hun pushes for Biggio to take a bench role, thus negating the chase for 3000.
- Astros make back-to-back WS appearances in 2005, thus earning Garner a much longer leash.
- Ultimately, the franchise is still left prospect-poor by 2008, and I don't think the current state is TOO different; but the past few years might have been very different.

I hope I'm not stepping on any preview writers' toes, but in looking at the AL all-star ballot, it occurred to me that (as usual) this Ranger team would be damn scary if they could pitch worth a damn.

For those that think the Good Guys aren't pitching well - the Rangers allow .9 runs a GAME more than the Astros.  They are far and away the worst staff in the majors.

Quote
Ricciardi slammed Dunn on his Wednesday night phone-in show on The Fan 590, a Toronto radio station. His comments came after a caller suggested the Jays acquire Dunn, who is hitting .227 with 18 homers and 43 RBIs with the Reds.

“Do you know the guy doesn’t really like baseball that much?” Ricciardi  said to the caller. “Do you know the guy doesn’t have a passion to play the game that much? How much do you know about the player?

“There’s a reason why you’re attracted to some players and there’s a reason why you’re not attracted to some players. I don’t think you’d be very happy if we brought Adam Dunn here …

“We’ve done our homework on guys like Adam Dunn and there’s a reason why we don’t want Adam Dunn. I don’t want to get into specifics.

You mean, you don't want to get more specific than "the guy doesn't really like baseball that much"?

The lead discusses the Astros' skid... and then starts their second paragraph with this nugget:

Quote
The primary culprit during this skid has been the pitching.

This pargraph is then followed with this chart:

Quote
Astros' nine-game road trip …
W-L 2-7
BA .227
Runs per game 2.3

ERA 4.01

… followed by nine-game homestand
W-L 2-7
BA .286
Runs per game 4.1
ERA 4.78

Viciedo is staying with relatives in Miami while his agent, Jaime Torres, is working with MLB and the players association in an attempt to clarify Viciedo's status.
