Talk Zone / Maddon Conspiracy Theorist??
« on: May 29, 2019, 07:58:04 am »
Maddon on the absurd carry on balls hit in Houston's dome last two games:
“There’s definitely something going on. I’m not a conspiracy theorist – I am not. You can really gauge it on the balls up toward the ceiling, too. That one Bote caught literally almost hit the roof...
Whoever wants to admit to something or not; I don’t know if it’s a combination of the ball -- or maybe the techonlogiy of the bat has gotten better. Maybe it’s just purely about velocity. Or maybe there’s helium in this ballpark. But it’s friggin’ jumping, man.”
Thoughts??

Astros pitching
It is never one thing when it comes to the Astros and their pitchers, never one number that screams, “gotcha!” The team’s process is both more subtle and more expansive, “not a secret sauce,” Hinch says, “as much as a combination.”
The information flows. The conversations continue. The Astros carry on.

I wrote this Bleacher Rap 15.5 years ago. My Daddy is still my hero. He has pneumonia and is not doing well. Between the time I wrote this Bleacher Rap and now, he has had one broken leg, one ossification surgery, two heart attacks, a lung infection, two stents, and a number of other ailments. He is now in his 9th inning with two outs. I love him with all my heart and I sincerely hope your children love you as much. Cherish your time with them because it is too short.

Talk Zone / Is there an anitdote?
« on: April 21, 2016, 09:38:47 am »
So, I intentionally did not watch last night's game. I went to bed early but did have the game on. I think I saw the drop by White and I was not surprised.
So, if this team is snake-bitten, what do you suppose is the antidote? I do not believe they are over-rated, but will admit that Hinch and Luhnow need to make some adjustments and shake things up.
My first move would be to sit Gomez and play Marisnick for more than just one game. The pitching will get adjusted when McCullers comes back.
Also, someone mentioned in the GZ yesterday that a Bagwell/Biggio moment needs to happen, well, Mr. Altuve and Mr. Correa, you guys are the leaders, start leading. I also think Rasmus would have their back, which would be good since I believe he is the best veteran on the team.

This is a great (and short write-up) article by Correa. Just makes me say prayers that he stays healthy, becomes the special player he seems to be for a long time, and stays an Astro for his entire career!

So, I've been reading Baseball's Great Experiment by Jules Tygiel and am thinking the way Branch Rickey rebuilt the Dodgers reminded me of how Luhnow has rebuild the Astros. Just wanted to share that thought. I also recommend the book to any who have not read it, but I suspect many of you already have.

Talk Zone / Astros and Ladies Night
« on: September 24, 2013, 06:12:33 pm »
So, the Astros tweeted they are doing a Ladies Night.
Houston Astros @astros 23 Sep
9/27 is Ladies Night by @StateFarm! Ladies can learn about baseball, enjoy music, food, drinks & more! For info & tix http://www.astros.com/ladies
Not surprisingly, some took offense in regard to the learn about baseball part of the tweet. Personally, I've sat around a lot of people (men and women) who could all learn some things about baseball.
I'm just thrilled they finally took my suggestion of having a ladies night. I just wish it wasn't this weekend since I'll be going to San Antonio. But, if any ladies do go, I'd love to hear how it goes.
Here's the link to the twitter post.

Talk Zone / RACE FOR THE LID XIV Official and Only Thread
« on: April 10, 2012, 10:20:19 am »
It's baaaaack! Unlike the Astros who are off to a fast start, we are a bit late on the ball. We will award a lid to the winner.
You ready... here you go...
RACE FOR THE LID XIV
Contest Rules:
1. Whatever the rules are, BudGirl (your RFTL judge and jury for 2012) can change them any time for any reason, including whim. The purpose of this rule is not to promote chaos, but to preempt wailing, moaning, whining, and griping. Particularly griping.
2. Picks below 80 should not win, even if they’re right they’re wrong. They will be accepted and you can be a winner but no one will like you.
3. All picks are in this thread. Picks out of this thread are DQ’d unless BudGirl changes the rules.
4. One pick per person.
5. If there are gaps in the high picks, say, between 95 and 162, the high pick gets the gaps down to the next highest pick. This does not work in reverse, i.e., below 95. We all lose if the Astros win fewer than the low pick.
6. The grand prize, of course, is an Astros cap of BudGirl's choosing from Astros.com. BudGirl is allowed to make rulings on prize disputes that may arise...namely, she gets to tell you to go to hell if you whine that you should get the prize!
7. NO PICKS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL THE OFFICIAL COMMENCEMENT TIME, WHICH IN THIS CIRCULAR DEFINITION WILL BE ON OR ABOUT 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 11th and will close Friday, April 13th at 10:00 am. Anyone who posts before then will be DQ'd. No picks will be accepted after the time shown in the previous sentence. Picks in any previous thread will not be included
8. Ron Brand will assist in the verification of picks. He will also assist in any additional matters determined by BudGirl.
9. If there is no correct pick BudGirl and Ron Brand will find a winner by a method of their choosing.
10. Here’s the list of past winners:
2011 – no winner
2010 Lurch
2009 Ron Brand
2008 EasTexAstro
2007
2006 Fredia (who PM'ed me and called me every name in the book... misspelled of course)
2005 Drew Corleone
2004 Andyzipp
2003 Jim R
2002 no winner
2001 Neil T. (See how arbitrary and capricious his rulemaking can be? He didn’t even enter the contest until the 161st game, right after he disqualified the real winner.)
2000 no winner, but one heck of a whiner
1999 Astrobabe
Good Luck and may be the best fan win!

Either way, the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter, hopefully it is not a train.

Oswalt very critical of teammates following tonight's game, saying they played with no fire and are dead.
“You’ve got to get it from the top, to come in and get us going. You can’t play dead, especially against guys in first place."
“If you don’t give 100 percent, you’re cheating him and cheating the fans of Houston," Oswalt said.
“We’ve got an owner that pays us money to come to play, and we’ve got to play,” Oswalt said.
“The team atmosphere is dead,” Oswalt said. “There’s no fire."

In case anyone is interested, I got this yesterday.
When: Thursday, June 4, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Italian Cultural Center, 1101 Milford (get directions) in the Museum District
Cost: $10
Reservations through The Houston Forum
The American past-time is baseball and it has been populated by colorful authentic characters--Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Leo Deroucher and many more.
Baseball authority/writer/attorney Talmage Boston has collected anecdotes about them with special emphasis on the sport dating from World War II forward. These were published in his second baseball book, "Baseball and the Baby Boomer," which hit a home run with author John Grisham.
Boston will share highlights of his book with us. Also on hand will be former Astros’ pitcher and manager Larry Dierker, who actually worked with Yogi and is willing to tell us his memorable Yogi moments...and more.

Starting June 4, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will host an outdoor summer film festival Wednesday nights at the new Discovery Green park, 1500 McKinney, in downtown Houston.
The movies will start at 8:30 p.m., admission is free, and the opening-night offering sounds like a hit.
A solid base hit.
The movie is called Rare Films From the Baseball Hall of Fame, and it has stuff that will have even the biggest baseball fans scratching their heads and saying, "Wow! I've never seen that before!"
For Houston fans, probably the most interesting segment is of highlights from the first regular-season game played at the Astrodome in 1965.

One thing a friend and I have noticed at the ballgames is the lack of photoshopping skills by the Astros.
We noticed it as early as the Friday exhibition game against Detroit. Michael Bourn is photoshopped on Morgan Ensberg's body (both #14). Last week we noticed that Kazou Matsui is on Adam Everett's body. Miguel Tejada is on Carlos Lee's body.
How long into the season do the Astros have to play for them to put up correct pictures. It is horrible.
Just wanted to share so the next time you go to a game at MMP you can look and compare for yourself.

I blame Budgirl. She is at the game--why didn't she throw something at Edmonds?
Or jump out on the field and tackle him?
That was not my fault. I could not have said anything more than I did. When he caught that ball all that came out of my mouth was "son of a bitch." I hate that make-up wearing fag and I refuse to touch him.
I knew the score of both the Spurs and the Stars. As I've stated previously, I didn't expect the Stars to win, so I'm not as upset as some people I know. I expected the Spurs to win, more experience in playoffs paid off in that game. But it will be interesting to see Crosby v. Red Wings. I gotta admit, I have a fondness for the Pens.
I do want to know why Cooper only had Brydak pitch one inning? I really thought he should have gone two innings.

One thing to note about Brocail pointing behind homeplate about a badge I think had to do with Bourn. When Ausmus went to the mound after the second out, Bourn had run into second and was pointing to something behind home plate. So, I guess the badge is what was distracting to Bourn.
Was an interesting game to attend. Seemed like all kind of stuff going on that you couldn't tell was it was.
Was fun. Glad to see the boys win another. Hopefully, they can do it again tomorrow.

Lee came out of the dugout before Biggio, made it practically all the way in to left field before the rest of the team came out.
Apparently, Bradley lost his belt in the 3rd inning. I'm not sure how I missed this, but I've had two people tell me about it before I left the parking lot after the game.
This team has problems. But, man was AE fun in to watch in the 3rd. If that ball had rolled a little more...
I thought Lidge did a great job only having one run score, if only the Astros could execute like the Reds did there.
Oh well, it was fun even if they lost. I ended up getting the little portfolio thing. Let me know if anyone wants it.

Mike Lamb comes up to bat after Morgan and he gets announced as RF Lance Berkman. The look on his face was classic. Announcer then got it right and Lamb got a walk. Right after that is when Preston got the hit.

Talk Zone / Annual Softball Game - March 11, 12-4pm
« on: January 26, 2006, 12:35:16 pm »
EDIT: Game will be on Saturday, March 11 from 12-4pm at Cleveland Park in Houston.
Which weekend is preferred?
March 4
March 11
March 18
The game will be at Cleveland Park. It will cost $15 for a registration fee and $35 rental fee (they are no longer charging companies an hourly rate). So, the more who come out and play, the cheaper the cost per individual.
Any questions?

Talk Zone / Alyson and Adam
« on: December 19, 2005, 02:44:19 pm »Quote:
As we all know, the Astros need offense. Will they sign Adam Dunn like I hope they do? He would add the missing pieces that the Astros need!
-- Randall W., Houston
We have to stop talking about Adam Dunn, for a few reasons:
? Adam Dunn is not a free agent.
? Adam Dunn is property of the Cincinnati Reds, for at least two more years.
? If the Astros want Adam Dunn, the Reds will have to trade him.
? The Reds traded Sean Casey and announced Adam Dunn will move to first base.
? The Reds no longer have a logjam in the outfield.
Therefore, Adam Dunn is not coming to Houston to play baseball. Unless he plays a pickup game in his backyard.

Astros beating the White Sox, Jazz beating the Rockets and a quilting convention. What more can go on in a small area?
Toyota Garage will be open for sure. Unless the Rockets are playing somewhere besides the Toyota Center.

When Lane was on 3rd and Ausmus at second, anyone else think about a squeeze?
Am I an idiot for thinking it could have worked with Everett at bat?
And what happened on Lane's slide at the plate?

Talk Zone / I have another best friend.
« on: October 17, 2005, 12:10:23 pm »
The only friend that won the lottery asked me if I wanted to go to game 5. Should I?
Also, she had to be at a meeting, so I was buying the tickets for her, I checked in at 10:00 on the dot. SRO for Games 3 & 4 only. Went with game 5 cause of the seats.

Talk Zone / Rusch's squeeze bunt attempt question and one another.
« on: September 30, 2005, 12:06:12 am »
Was it a bunt? A strike/ball that Chavez blocked? I thought Rusch had bunted, but couldn't figure out why he didn't go to first.
Was Gipson having a problem going around 2nd? It didn't look like he was running very smooth.
