Talk Zone / Astros/Nats tickets for sale: Sat 7/12
« on: July 07, 2008, 04:19:33 pm »
I have my 2 season tickets for sale to the Saturday 7/12 Astros-Nationals game.  (Can't go - softball game.)  Seats are in Section 314, Row A, on the aisle - front row in the upper deck.  $40 for the pair, which is less than what you'd pay at the box office.  If interested, PM me.  Thanks.

Talk Zone / Are umps KKK members?
« on: January 30, 2008, 03:58:30 pm »
Here's a nominee for most ridiculous story of the MLB off-season:

"Umpires are livid that Major League Baseball has sent investigators to their hometowns, asking neighbors a series of questions that include whether the ump belongs to the Ku Klux Klan."
"Tom Christopher, the Milwaukee-based supervisor of security and investigations in the commissioner's office, had asked questions about Klan membership to neighbors of umpires Greg Gibson and Sam Holbrook, who reside in Kentucky. In addition, Hirschbeck said similar questions had been asked to neighbors of umpire Ron Kulpa, who lives in the St. Louis area."
"Once again, baseball's favorite way of doing things: Ready, fire, aim," Hirschbeck said. "It's not a good way to start the season."

Talk Zone / Pettitte could corroborate HGH accusation against Clemens
« on: January 30, 2008, 08:49:13 am »
"Based on what we know, there was a situation where Andy was speaking to Roger in Brian's presence, then Andy came over to Brian and essentially said, 'Why didn't you tell me about this stuff?' He referred to HGH," Ward said. "Brian discouraged him and then several months later, when he (Pettitte) got injured, he came back and asked Brian about it, and that's when Brian injected him. We believe that based on the fact that Andy came to Brian and asked him about HGH, it was Roger who told Andy about HGH and that's why he asked Brian about it."

Richard Emery, another lawyer for McNamee, said his client and Pettitte also discussed steroids use by Clemens.

"Pettitte is certainly going to tell the truth, and if he tells the truth, everything will be fine," Emery said

"Matt Williams, a five-time All-Star who played 17 seasons in the majors, purchased $11,600 worth of HGH, steroids and other drugs from the Palm Beach clinic in 2002..."

"Ismael Valdez, who spent parts of 12 seasons with seven teams and last pitched in the majors in 2005, purchased $11,300 worth of performance-enhancing drugs in 2002..."

Sad to see Williams's name in this, always liked him.

Talk Zone / Sexiest Fan Alive
« on: October 13, 2007, 02:18:02 am »
My interest in baseball has been renewed, thanks to People's "Sexiest Fan Alive" contest.  And here I thought "sexy" was defined by a ground ball to 2st that advances the runner to 3th.  ANYWAY, Assuming Scarlett Johansson is a fan of SOMETHING, I thought this contest was already over, yet TBS continues to push it.

I present,

Candie makes several curious points.  As a Killer B fan, she supports injury-ridden Backe, but not Borkowski.  She wants to change the "walk rule" (a hotly contested rule during the Owners Meetings, for sure).  Her favorite cheer is "Full count, lights out!  Houston Astros withoutta doubt!!!," which seems highly impractical, if not solely for the fact that MMPUS fireworks are not ready to launch at lights out on every full count.

Given that no one here (that I know of) can compare with the globes under Candie's bumblebee costume, I propose this site starts an OWAiest Fan Alive contest.

Talk Zone / Hickey
« on: October 02, 2007, 11:57:12 am »
"The pitching coach of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was arrested by St. Petersburg police late Sunday and charged with DUI, hit and run and resisting arrest without violence.

Police said an undercover officer saw James J. Hickey, 45, run his silver pickup into the back of a green pickup at First Avenue and 16th Street S, in front of Tropicana Field. The green pickup was driven by Devil Rays batboy Matthew Felix Carlson, and both men were stopped at a traffic light, said St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman George Kajtsa.

According to a St. Petersburg Police Department affidavit, Hickey pulled over for Police Officer Steven W. Sprout at Gandy Boulevard but then tried to put the car in gear and drive away. Hickey refused to get out of the car, Kajtsa said, and was brought out by officers. He then stumbled when he got out of the car and fell to the ground."

Talk Zone / Scoring question
« on: June 19, 2007, 09:37:01 am »
Figgins was given a triple on his game-winning hit.  What is the rule in a walk-off situation?  I always assumed that once the winning run scores, the batter gets credit for the last base reached.  I can't imagine Figgins got to 3rd before Willits scored...

Talk Zone / Everett's RBI ground-out
« on: May 09, 2007, 01:10:38 pm »
In last night's game, on Everett's RBI ground-out to 3B in the 2nd, the Reds announcers were saying that Encarnacion made a mental error by not looking back Pence at 3rd.  This was a slowly-hit ball that Encarnacion had to charge and make a quick play on the run to just barely nip Everett at 1st.

The way I saw it, it didn't seem like there would have been any time to look Pence back to 3rd and still get the out at 1st, so I don't understand what the Reds announcers were talking about.  Am I missing something?

Great snippet in NYCU today about Springer sitting in the stands last night.  I sat in that section for the Bruntlett game last year.  Is this "common practice" for an active suspended player to sit in the stands?  I certainly have never heard of that before.  Did any of the Houston cameramen show him during the broadcast last night?  I've seen Drayton, Hunsicker, and Purpura in the stands before... never a player though.  Also, I wonder where Garner was?

AE did a couple strange things last night.

First, in the bottom of the 3rd, he led off the inning and got ahead 3-0 before swinging at ball 4 (he did get a hit).  Why is a .250 hitter swinging on a 3-0 pitch, let alone a garbage pitch?

Later, in the big 6th inning and with Houston up 6-1, 0 outs, runner on 2nd, he was bunting first pitch and popped it up to 3B.

"Needless to say, there haven't been discussions of that in detail," Axelrod said, "because our position has always been that Jeff was trying to be a player. On one side, the player's name will be engraved next to the words "First World Series," with an Astros logo sitting on top of a logo of the state of Texas.

The other side will feature an engraved "Astros," a depiction of Minute Maid Park and the year "2005."

I'm still bitter that I never even got a rejection e-mail from the Astros after entering the 2005 WS ticket lottery, and I was feeling the same way about the  2006 NCAA basketball regional semi- & finals lottery I entered until today...

Randomly got a call from MCI Center.  I didn't recognize the phone number so I was hesitant to answer, but when I did, the lady at the other end told me that a bunch of ticket orders were cancelled, did I still want tickets?

HELL YEAH.  She even increased the original max ticket order from 2 to 4.  ALSO, my sister, who was part of the same batch of entries I filled out, got the call as well.  So all told, 8 tickets to the 3 games at MCI.

March is shaping up to be the best sports-attending-month ever, between Spring Training, WBC, and now the NCAAs.

I wonder if Juan said at any point during the making of this ad, "hey guys, I normally turn to my right when I'm stealing a base."  Maybe the producers were just forecasting the direction of the 2006 Cubs season.

Talk Zone / Today is the most depressing day of the year
« on: October 27, 2005, 12:50:35 pm »
...because it represents the longest amount of time between the end of one season and the beginning of the next.  Even if they had won, there would still be that empty feeling provided by late fall/winter.  NFL season officially starts Sunday, as far as I'm concerned.

115 long days until pitchers and catchers report.

Talk Zone / Garner to Burke?
« on: October 26, 2005, 12:30:46 pm »
Anyone hear of what Garner said when he ran out to Burke at first base in the 9th?  NEVER seen that move before.  I was watching the post-game press conference on ESPN and waiting for a reporter to ask, but no one did.

« on: October 19, 2005, 02:51:01 pm »
"Wednesday's Game 6 of the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals compares in magnitude only to his outing in the 2000 Olympics against South Korea in the semifinals of the medal round."

Talk Zone / From what I've heard, Drayton McLane...
« on: October 18, 2005, 01:25:03 am » the most positive, up-beat person on the planet.  I'm glad that he owns this team right now.  I bet he'll have something to say to the troops, if they need to hear something to get ready for game 6.

Talk Zone / Stupid Fox
« on: October 17, 2005, 09:16:36 pm »
When Fox just came back from the last ad, the shot they showed with the camera in CF, looking toward the out-of-town scoreboard, was clearly from the 2004 All-Star Game.  You could see the "This time it counts" banner over the scoreboard.  Weak.

Most bizarre moment of last night's game - Francoeur single to right in 7th, Lane gets it in to 2B, and a BALL COMES FLYING FROM THE STANDS ONTO THE FIELD OF PLAY DURING THE ENSUING RUNDOWN???  What the fuck???  I've never seen anything like that before.

Talk Zone / Stat of the Day
« on: October 05, 2005, 02:12:15 pm »
Andruw Jones is hitting .207 (38-184) with runners in scoring position.  The only Astro non-pitchers on the postseason roster with a lower RISP AVG than that are Scott (.190, 4-21) and Chavez (.176, 3-17).  Even Oswalt (.211, 4-19) and Backe (.385, 5-13) are hitting better than Jones with RISP.  Jones's RISP OBP of .335 is pretty pathetic, too.

Talk Zone / Yanks angry at Showalter
« on: October 03, 2005, 12:47:08 pm »
"Showalter removed starters Michael Young, Mark Teixeira and Hank Blalock for pinch-runners in the third inning against the Angels on Sunday. The Texas Rangers led 4-1 after three innings, but the Angels rallied for a 7-4 victory and earned home-field advantage for the first round against the Yankees with the victory."

Talk Zone / Am I the only one who can't POSSIBLY get to sleep?
« on: October 02, 2005, 05:15:58 am »
Everytime I try to go to sleep, my mind starts racing relentlessly about tomorrow.  4:15AM and I'm too wired to sleep.  I can't begin to IMAGINE what it's like for a PLAYER.  Jeebus, I can't even get to sleep with a big SOFTBALL game on my mind, let alone a game of tomorrow's magnitude...

Talk Zone / Will the BBGs hate me...
« on: October 02, 2005, 02:23:11 am »
...if I order tickets to the one-game playoff in Philly?  The Internet presale starts at 2PM tomorrow.  If I wait until it is KNOWN whether the game will take place, I won't be able to get a seat by the dugout.  I'm torn.

Talk Zone / Someone watching the game pls. tell me...

Talk Zone / Hey, you know what makes all sorts of fucking sense?
« on: October 01, 2005, 02:46:01 pm »
The national live blackout.  Thanks, Fox!  Biggest baseball day of the year so far, and I can't watch HOU-CHC, NYY-BOS, or CWS-CLE.  What a fucking joke.   THIS ad is particularly ridiculous - the only people who CAN watch the game live on MLB.TV are people who live OUTSIDE of US, Japan, South Korea, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands.  MLB REALLY needs to change this absurd rule.
