The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Shaver behind the plate
« on: September 16, 2019, 09:55:52 am »
The Athletic has a great article about Colton Shaver being tried out at catcher in the AFL.

Quote
Shaver grew up catching and was recruited to BYU as a catcher but was primarily a DH in college because he was blocked by older catchers on the Cougars’ roster.

“I really like it back there. I like how you’re always engaged in each and every pitch,” Shaver said. “That’s always been my first love as a position.”

He made it to Corpus this year, and at 24 it sounds like if this experiment works, he could be pushing for a roster spot in Houston next year.  Did anyone see him play this year?

Talk Zone / Six pitcher no-hitter
« on: June 11, 2018, 12:17:51 pm »
The Athletic has a fantastic article about it today, with interviews from all six pitchers and a couple Yankees for balance.  Several gems in there, including this one:

Quote
Astros equipment manager Dennis Laborio approached Wagner in the clubhouse.

“Drayton wants the ball,” Laborio said to Wagner, referring to Astros owner Drayton McLane, who was in attendance at Yankee Stadium that night.

“Well he’s not getting the ball,” Wagner told him.

Also, Ricky Stone has had a rough go since leaving professional baseball.  Brain tumor in 2008 that gave him some memory issues, and lost his wife to ovarian cancer in 2015.  Oswalt keeps in regular touch with him.

Talk Zone / The Athletic Houston
« on: February 12, 2018, 10:34:15 am »
If you're not familiar, The Athletic has built a blog network with professional writers (Rosenthal, Gammons) doing national coverage, and local writers providing more in-depth coverage.  The "catch" is that it's paid only.  It's not unreasonable (the current promo rate is less than $4/month), and there are no ads or clutter.  No 12 page slideshows.

They're launching the Houston site now, and they've already grabbed Jake Kaplan and Steve Campbell from the Chron.  Site is up here.

I'm debating about whether the (cheap) cost ads any value compared to what I get for free from the Chron and McTaggart.  But it's tempting.

Talk Zone / Beltran 2.0
« on: November 14, 2017, 09:08:11 am »
After reading Beltran's Player's Tribune piece, and seeing what a great impact he (and McCann and Verlander) had on this team, I got to thinking about other veterans who haven't gotten a ring who could come play a role in 2018, and get a chance at a World Series.  The first name that came to mind is Ichiro (5th OF/DH), but I'm sure there are others.  Is there anyone y'all would like to see in the clubhouse next year?

Quote from: Definitely the real Randy Johnson
Randy Johnson (Seattle Mariners starting pitcher): My manager came onto the mound and said to me, “Well, Randy, you fucking blew it like the Oracle said you would, and so now we’re trading you to the Houston Astros,” and I said, “Please don’t do that. Those fuckers are weird,” and my manager said, “You should have thought of that before you gave up that goddamn moonshot to McGwire.” And then the Houston Astros drove onto the field in a school bus, and they were all humming the same high-pitched note in unison, and their manager said to me, “Welcome to the Houston Astros. We all sleep in the same big bed, and the bed is alive,” and I said, “I hate you weird fuckers,” but I had to get on the bus anyway.

Clickhole is a treasure.

Before work and a sick wife conspired against me, I had part of a draft of a Rangers/Astros preview put together for earlier in the week.  Thanks to everyone for reading not just my previews this year, but all of the extremely talented writers who contribute their thoughts, too.

Quote from: The Preview That Never Was
This is late, so I’m going to make it short and sweet.  WE WON THE SILVER BOOT THIS YEAR!  And you know what: we’re going to win it next year, too.  The dozen or so fans that the Rangers have left have no doubt blamed injuries for their failures this year, and to be honest, I haven’t seen this much roster turnover since Charlie Strong took over.  So let’s take the rest of the games from the DFW Dumbshits, and let them deal with the signing demands of some 17 year old with a God complex and a knob-polishing friend of the family who just so happens to be a professional sports agent.

Can't wait for next year!

Talk Zone / Astros @ Indians Series Preview: Read it here
« on: September 19, 2013, 04:57:55 pm »
Still can't post to WordPress at work, so I'll just leave this here:

Waiting, Game

And I haven't seen you in days.
And my how that feeling has changed.
Oh I have been homesick for you since we met.
I have been homesick for you.

If these things were predictable, I’d be sitting here holding my son right now.  Instead, my wife continues to waddle around uncomfortably in the lingering September heat, three days past her due date,  and he’s continuing to enjoy the free room and board she’s providing.  Can’t say that I blame him for being comfy where he’s at, but at some point in the next seven days, he’s going to have to come out and see the broken, beautiful world that he’ll inherit.

The final month of the pregnancy is the worst, I imagine.  Combine the late summer lethargy with an additional fifty pounds (which is all, somehow, in the feet), and you’ve got a recipe for a really, really miserable existence.  That my wife puts up with it with only minimal complaints is a proof of her character and good humor that passes the fact of our marriage as a similar testimony.

I’d hoped to see an Astros jersey on George Springer by now too, but there are some legitimate, wise reasons why I’ll have to wait for April on that one.  The armchair pundits are crowing over another 100 loss season, and maybe Springer would hit enough dingers to outpace the shit tornado that trundles out of the bullpen every night.  But if having Chris Perez on the 40 man now, and the 25 man in 2016 gives us the puzzle pieces we need, then we’ll keep on waiting.

The doctor has said that labor will be induced next Friday.  Springer will be in the outfield for Opening Day against the Yankees.  My son and I will be there to see him.

Thursday, September 19th
6:05 CT, Progressive Field
Dallas Keuchel (6-9, 5.17) v. Ubaldo Jimenez (12-9, 3.49)

Keuchel’s shown some flashes of promise this season as a starter, but you have to wonder if he’d be a better bullpen piece if we had more rotation options.  Then again, you could say that about almost every starter except Cosart.   Jason Kubel has hit two homers off him, and he’s never gotten Nick Swisher out.  Yipee!

Jimenez has returned to his Rockies form this year, and is due for a big free agent payday in the offseason.  Brian Cashman, please pick up the red courtesy phone!  Altuve has a triple off him.  Everyone else is hitting .235/.353/.703.  Hoo boy.

Friday, September 20th
6:05 CT, Is Flo In Those Ads Actually Hot, Or Is That A Hudson-Nancy Grace Thing? Field
Brett Oberhotlzer (4-3, 2.98) v. Zach McAllister (8-9, 3.96)

Look!  Our pitcher has a winning record!  Obie’s done quite well for himself so far. He’s only seen the Tribe in relief, but Santana and Stubbs have both homered off him.

McAllister is a pitcher for the Indians.  Only Carter has faced him and has a homer and a K in six ABs.  Sounds about right.

Saturday, September 21st
5:05 CT, I Mean, Take Away The Overdone Hair And Makeup, And She’s Hot, Right? Field
Paul Clemens (4-5, 5.54) v. Scott Kazmir (8-9, 4.34)

The fact that Clemens has a high ERA is almost completely attributable to his time in the bully.  Being in the Astros bullpen this year is like Mack Brown’s last five years: lots of talent out there, but the results just don’t translate.  The Indians are hitting a stingy .083 against Clemens.  Not bad.

I love Kazmir’s story this year.  Total wash-out until hooking up with the Skeeters, and now he’s contributing to a playoff hunt.  Local boy done good.  Altuve’s 3-for-3 against him, and Laird and Barnes each have a homer.

Sunday, September 22nd
12:05 CT, I’m Alone In Thinking Flo Is Hot, Huh? Field
Erik Bedard (4-11, 4.60) v. Corey Kluber (9-5, 3.62)

You get what you pay for with Bedard.  And he’s shifted from bullpen to rotation and back and forth without bitching like Harrell, so there’s that.  Cabrera (who is an Indian, not a Brave) has hit .333 against him, and Santana goes supernatural by hitting .429 with a 1.000 OPS.

Corey Kluber sounds like the secret identity of a superhero whose power involved a large mallet.  And yes, I know it’s probably pronounced “clue-ber”.  It’s my preview, asshole.  Marwin and Laird have hits off him, and Carter has K’d half the time he’s seen him.

Promotions and Injuries

I’m skipping the crap because a) the guys who had Tommy John in April still aren’t coming back, b) I’m depressed about Castro’s knee and c) I need to start stockpiling sleep like canned beans in a bomb shelter.

What To Watch For
-   These games are more important for the Indians than they are for us, and the Wild Card team they could knock off the weekend is the stRangers.  CONUNDRUM!
-   Isn’t there a Harpo Molina we could sign to play catcher?
-   The sweet embrace of The Void.

The realest thing I ever felt
Was the blood on the floor and the love in your yell.

« on: June 11, 2013, 03:11:31 pm »
Central Texas hot is different than Houston Hot.  For all its swampy ugliness, Houston at least affords you enough shade in which to cool your sweaty balls (or lady-balls, if that's your thing). Trees go a long way toward providing comfort, even when the humidity comes and finds you in the shade and kicks your ass. But Central Texas, while lacking in humidity makes up for it in sheer inescabability.  I was in a parking lot at the outlet stores in San Marcos, trying in vain to find a tree or even an ambitious shrub under which I could find some shade, when my phone buzzed.

Series Preview (Mariners)
Due in: 15 minutes

Well, fuck me.

The wife and I were out here in Satan's Retail Paradise to stock the eventual bambino's room. I hope this isn't news to anyone, but baby shit is incredibly expensive.  Which I suppose could be taken a number of ways.  Setting the pattern for the next 20+ years to follow, we spent far and away more on the Boy than we did on ourselves.  Hell, we got more stuff for the dog that we did for me. Say la vee.

What did all this spending get me?  That's right: the privilege of operating an Allen wrench for several hours so that the child who won't be able to focus his eyes on anything for about two months will have an aesthetically pleasing place to call his own.  I didn't have a chair that cost as much as that rocker in his room until...well, until now.

Who am I kidding? I could never be mad at him.  I love him.  At least until he spills a Capri Sun on that chair that made Daddy miss his Preview deadline.

Probable Pitchers

(Joke about the Monday game's probable pitchers and likely outcome)

Tuesday, June 11th
9:10 CT, Safeco Field

Bud Norris (5-5, 3.43) v. Aaron Harang (2-6, 6.70)

Bud has put together a number of nice starts lately, which means that the national press is licking their chops about his trade value.  I don't know if Norris is part of the long-term plan for the Astros, but he's put in some workman-worthy seasons during a dark time for the franchise, so I hope that if they do trade him, he knows that he was appreciated while he was here. Jason Bay has a homer in three AB's against him.

Harang, huh? Look at this headshot.

Quote from: 'Google'
No results found for "is aaron harang a juggalo".

Huh.  Could've sworn.  Cendeno has 2 homer and 7 RBI to go with a .292/.583/.929 against him.  No other position players besides Pena (.167) and Crowe (.333) have faced him.

Wednesday, June 12th
9:10 CT, Safeco Field

Jordan Lyles (3-1, 4.03) v. Jeremy Bonderman (1-1, 6.75)

Lyles has been a nice surprise last year, considering that Mr. Happy was ready to trade him to Toronto for a plate of cheese curds last year. Morse has homered against him, but also has 2 K's in 7 AB's.  Endy Chavez has a triple, too.

Bonderman got his first win since 2010 in his last outing, which makes sense because I thought he retired around the same time Greg Maddux did.  Only the players who spent much time in the AL (Pena, Cedeno, Crowe) have faced him, and they're batting .167 collectively against him.

Injuries

Astros
Brandon Barnes - hammy tightness.  CALL UP SPRINGER, PAWWWWWWWWWL!
Edgar Gonzalez - 15-day DL.  Right shoulder strain.  Pitching better than half the bully just by sitting.
Justin Maxwell - 15-day DL.  Coming back from rehab by the end of the week.
Alex White - TJ surgery.  HE DONE.

M's
Franklin Gutierrez - Strained right hamstring.  No horseplay in the shower, kids.
Josh Kinney - stress reaction in third rib on left side.  Well well well, Mr. Super Specific Injury Reporter.
Stephen Pryor - Tear in right lat.  So now you can't spell out whatever "lat" is short for?  Bullshit.
Justin Smoak - Still not as good as Jason Castro.  Believe it.
Jesus Sucre - Sweet Jesus.  Literally.

Promotions
Wednesday - Travel mug.  Because people from Seattle love coffee.  I hope people make jokes about that.

What To Watch For

- The clock to roll over to midnight in the seventh inning.
- Garlic fries.
- Bud's trade value.
- This actually fun to watch hometown team.

Talk Zone / Astros @ Tigers Series Preview - Posted HERE
« on: May 13, 2013, 06:44:09 pm »
Due to technical difficulties, this isn't on the home page for the moment:

My father was never that good at playing catch. Field of Dreams this was not. He was a band nerd in
high school, and his form was atrocious. A less charitable son would say that he threw like a girl. But
he’d still pick up his glove and stand out in the yard, or across the street at the park, and we’d toss the
ball around a bit. Levi’s 505s, white sneakers, and that odd, flailing elbow motion. Back and forth. Pop.
Pop. Pop.

It’s not like I can blame my lack of athletic achievement on my dad’s lousy throwing motion. Perhaps I
can blame him for a beanpole physique, but that’s about it. Most of all, he taught us to see games as
just that, baseball included. And he showed us that games could have a piece of our love, but not our
all-consuming obsession.

We’d continue the long toss tradition past the point where I was done with organized baseball, but
as many things do, it petered out altogether around the time that I left for college. I guess that’s the
way these things are supposed to go. I don’t recall seeing many men in their thirties who still toss
the pill around with their pater familias. But today I’m both reflecting the passing of that part of my
relationship with my dad, and looking forward to starting the same tradition for myself.

We saw the wedding tackle on the ultrasound at the end of the appointment. For whatever reason, I’d
been thinking “girl” ever since we found out in January. Either way, the seismic shift in my mentality
was immediate. There was an hour lag before the follow-up appointment when the doctor would tell
my wife that everything looked blessedly normal.

I filled that hour by driving from the Med Center to the Academy at 59 and Kirby, finding the tiniest
Astros shirt I could. It’s the new orange, so bright it’s sort of obnoxious. At least it’ll hide stains well. I
hope I can teach my son how to love this game like I do. And I hope that thirty years from now, he’s not
making fun of me on the internet for how I throw.

Probable Pitchers

Monday, May 13th

6:08 (!) CT, The House That Unemployment Built

Bud Norris (4-3, 3.40) v. Anibal Sanchez (3-3, 1.97)

Bud’s been the ace that we were expecting Harrell to be this year, at least at Minute Maid. On the road,
he’s been…well, the up-and-down Bud Norris we’ve seen for the past few years. He hasn’t faced any of
the Tigers much, with the exception of Prince Fielder, who’s 5-20 with a homer and six K’s against him.

Sanchez wasn’t the big, heralded signing that Zach Grienke was, but he’s certainly been far more
impactful in Detroit. There’s no faking a sub-2.00 ERA, even with a girl’s name. Pena’s had some
success against Sanchez, with a 1.017 OPS in 10 ABs, and Ronny Cedeno is 1-for-3 with a homer against
him.

Tuesday, May 14th

6:08 (?) CT, Rust Belt Park

Lucas Harrell (3-3, 4.67) v. Doug “Fister” Fister (4-1, 3.14)

Harrell’s been frustratingly inconsistent this year, missing the strikezone a lot and generally not
delivering the results we saw last year. As an AL Central refugee, Harrell’s seen most of the Tigers lineup
before. Fielder, Alex Avila and Omar Infante have all hit him well, and Miggy Cabrera has a homer off
him.

Fister’s had this season firmly in his grasp so far. He’s been pounding hitters, and squeezing out of some
tight spots. If he keeps ramming his pitches into the zone, he’ll keep getting the happy endings he’s
seen so far. In the past, Altuve’s given Fister quite the beating, with a 1.500 OPS, and Carter drove one
all the way into the hole with a homer as one of his three hits in eight AB’s. I BARELY KNOW ‘ER!

Wednesday, May 15th

12:08 (?!?) CT, The Definition of Urban Malaise Stadium

Dallas Keuchel (0-1, 4.43) v. Max Scherzer (5-0, 3.61)

Keuchel’s back in the starting lineup after the release of Humber and the relegation of Peacock to the
bully. His start against the Rangers went pretty well, but was marred by a lack of run support, and the
bullpen shitting the bed as per usual. In 19 AB’s, the Tigers are hitting a collective .368 against him, with
a couple of doubles and an RBI by Don Kelly.

Scherzer

SCHERZER

SCHERZER

What manner of molesty, heterochromia madness is this? I dare not say more.

Injuries

Astros

Josh Fields – 15 Day DL – Rehabbing his forearm strain

Justin Maxwell – 15 day DL – Could be back from broken hand by June.

Alex White – Out – Tommy John for EVERYONE!

Tigers

Octavio Dotel – 15-Day DL – Right elbow inflammation. Can’t pick up a baseball, which is pretty
important.

Austin Jackson – DTD – Sore right hammy.

Promotions

Does your answer regarding the Community Leaders sign change knowing that $18 million from the Community Leaders sign is going towards rebuilding and maintaining youth baseball fields in Houston parks over the next 5 years? Please rate on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being much more negative and 5 being much more positive.

My answer:

I recognize the community value of the billboards/advertising/whatever, but it's just flat ugly, distracting and doesn't belong in the ballpark.  Let the Community Leaders have advertising elsewhere in the ballpark.

The fact that this question is even being asked 1) feels manipulative and 2) highlights the fact that everyone hates it already.

Astros manager Brad Mills says Carlos Lee will be the Astros’ starting first baseman in 2012, and that could open up a deal involving Brett Wallace to the Cleveland Indians. The Indians have been discouraged by Carlos Pena's (No. 17 on my free-agent board) high asking price and are not convinced that Matt LaPorta is going to hit well. Wallace has been in four different organizations since being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008.

Link (Insider)

If we can get something for Wallace now, and Singleton progresses, I'm cool with it.

As I was driving home today and reading about Altuve's big first day in Corpus, I couldn't help but wonder if this is bigger than we think.

Picture a player with the scrappiness of the sainted David Eckstein, but with the stats to back it up, too. The old school sportswriters get another poster boy for hustle, and the stat geeks swoon over his VORP or whatever.

Basically he brings balance to the Force or something. Spring Training 2012 can't come soon enough.

I know that since a lot of the posters here are Austinites this might be old hat, but the wife and I are coming to town toward the end of May for a weekend, and would like to get at least one fine dining meal, and a couple of cheaper (<$20/person) places.

I haven't ever been to Torchy's or Franklin BBQ, so I'm hoping for one of those for a Saturday lunch, unless someone says the word "over-rated."

Any recommendations?

Okay, I knew from the outset that this wasn't going to be my favorite beer, but I'm strangely compelled to try all the weird Shiner seasonals.  They're starting to approach Sam Adams levels of ridiculousness, though.

So it's basically a pils w/ ruby red grapefruit and ginger.  Lots of ginger.  It's very crisp and citrusy. (shocker)  Good summer beer and might be a decent backbone for a michelada. It may be the most summery summer beer I've ever tried.

It's basically a girl beer, but in a defensible kind of way.  Anyone else had it?

From Bill Simmons' column today, wherein he bemoans the poor state of the Sox farm system.  Say what you will about his Boston homerism, but he follows his teams to an insane level of detail.  So then he tosses in this nugget following his assessment of their prospects:

Quote
Note: ESPN's Keith Law had Boston ranked as his No. 2 farm system in February. When I e-mailed him for a July update, he wrote back that many of its top guys were underperforming and added, "They're not No. 2 anymore. Definitely still top-10." I'm not pumping my fist.

Wade confirms that they had some last-minute talks with the two pitchers. If I'm reading this right, as far as Wolf is concerned, the actual numbers weren't too far off from what he got with the Dojers, it was just the incentives and geography that tipped Wolf back to LA.

So, if Wade's still trolling the FA market for pitching (and not Pudge, apparently), who else is out there that would sign for $4-5MM? One of the Hernandez brothers and their proverbial "innings eater" status?
