Sarcasm meters STILL don't work in SNS forums?  With all of the time you guys save not watching games, I figured that bug would have been fixed by now.

Lots of parity in our league this year.  6-4 leader and 4-6 bottom

To load balance their servers, slots per day/time are limited.  Many of the ideal times (mid evenings) are already booked.  You'll want to nail it down quickly.

Any is good for me.  You can always plug in your player order and let it auto draft

We're nearing the logical break off point for some/many of us.  If im going to stop following the Astros, stopping by here becomes less nessisary, if not downright frustrating.  Sad that such a seemingly insignificant event may implode a "community" but that seems to be a very possible outcome.

Anyone else feeling torn about this?

The Texans are just mauling people right now.  For the fourth straight week, they've simply run over a lesser opponent.  The last two were over as soon as they started.  In a way, I'm disappointed they have a bye next week...I'm ready for them to smack someone else.

My hope is the return of Andre won't cause too much of a shift away from the run.

You had marching band in junior high? I knew guys who switched from band to football in high school. I knew a lot of footballs players, so it wasn't as polar at my HS.

No, and thats the funny part to me now.  I had only been in symphonic band in Jr High.  Had no idea what marching was about, but the drums they strapped on us were really fucking cool ("bulletproof heads!").  Had I been given a day to think about it I'm almost certain I would have picked what I knew...football

Saw a good one on Twitter a few days back.  Can you pinpoint a single, seemingly insignificant event that most shaped who you are today?

Mine was when I was 14 years old, entering my freshmen year in high school.  I had been an at-best decent football player and a fairly good drummer in jr high.  Im in the middle of trying out for a place in marching band when the instructor says that he saw I was registered on the football team and couldnt do both.  He asked me right then and there if I was going to play football or be on his drumline.  This in front of several other judges and my peers.  I wasnt even aware going into the room it was a problem.  I had never given it an ounce of consideration.  I said drums and that was that.

In retrospect, that little decision drove a tremendous amount of life experiences, thus who I came to be.  In my high school (as most, I would assume) the band and athletics groups couldnt have been more polar.  My circle of friends for the next four years was heavily dictated by that, which then drove where I worked, who I dated, where I went to school (UT), where I worked again, people I met, where I worked again, meeting my wife, having kids.  Bam! ~5 seconds as a 14 year old kid.

This is probably the worst major college football sports scandal ever, and the other shoe hasn't even dropped yet (please xplain why so many would be interested in covering up child rape by a former defensive coordinator unless something else was going on)

There's no reasonable explanation to not immediately call police, at a minimum.  And it wasn't just one person that didn't pick up the phone.  Something else was going on

« on: November 09, 2011, 02:00:25 pm »
http://www.tree.com/food-dining/draft-or-bottled-beer.aspx

Some brewers produce beer that they call bottled draftbeer. Unlike other bottled beers, they haven''t undergone pasteurization. However, to make sure the beer doesn''t spoil, bottled draft beer is subjected to cold, sterile filtration, removing much of its flavor. Most informed beer drinkers think that bottled draft beer is no better than other bottled beers.

Beer is filtered before it''s canned and then undergoes pasteurization once canned. Brewers have developed products that can withstand these processes and the end result is often enjoyable. However, canned beers can pick up and retain unpleasant flavors from the environment in which they were packaged. Fortunately, this problem is not common.

Now, to plastic v glass...

http://www.brewplus.com/making-beer/should-home-brew-beer-be-stored-in-glass-or-plastic/

Disadvantages of Plastic Beer Containers

Most beer lovers naturally cringe when someone mentions plastic storage containers, and this is because the disadvantages of use plastic beer bottles far outweigh the benefits in most cases. The most major problem with using plastic beer containers is that plastic is not as solid of a material as glass. Over the passage of time, carbon dioxide will actually pass through the plastic material of your storage container, and oxygen will enter. If you do not use beer that is stored in a plastic storage container soon enough, you will find that your beer has become flat and oxidized as a result. Additionally, most plastic storage containers are completely clear, allowing ultra-violet light to change the flavor of the bottle over time if the container is not stored properly. Lastly, plastic storage containers simply have a rather cheap appearance that many home brewers feel does not give the proper respect to the beer that they have spent so much time and care brewing at home.

Fine work, sir.  Take the rest of the day off

The attorney I work for says that Lone Star in a longneck is the exact same product that comes out of a Keg, a cold filtered draft. while the canned version is pasteurized.  Not sure where he got that from, but he likes him some Lone Star and refuses to drink it out of a can.  I may use the interwebs to solve this mystery.  So much for work this afternoon...

While you're in there: plastic vs glass, please.

Okay, Lurch. You've obviously joined Bench on the Let's Give Mr. Happy Shit team. Washington made some unconventional, bordering on malpractice, moves in the WS. Defend IBB's when your pitchers obviously are having trouble with command. Defend some of his PH moves. I can't wait for this. I suspect that you will do nothing but show your abject baseball ignorance. Let's see it. Players win games; managers lose some games. I'm not saying that Washington lost any of these games, but some of his moves caused even a casual baseball fan to wince.

SFAM is my favorite Dream Theater album, but you can't listen to one song.  You have to listen to the whole thing start to finish.  BTW, my favorite tune on that album is "Home".

Agree, it's just that Fatal Tragedy somehow managed to include just about every theme of DT in an easily digestible package...  I always get a chuckle out of the songs that start out making me think "aw, shit, they threw in a ballad" and then BAM!

By the way, Mangini is unreal.  His solo included one handed rolls around the kit.  That shouldn't even be possible.

Sunday morning, I  had a last minute epiphany, and put my faith in Tebow.

Brady had a bye and so did Fitzpatrick, so I had to drop Fitz. I picked up Jay Cutler earlier in the week, and then Sunday morning I swapped out Cutler for Tebow on a hunch Tebow might run for a couple of TDs. I was wrong on that, but he still scored 3X as many fantasy points (22.6) than Cutler (7.58). So tell me, was it a bad move?

I don't care how well he does, we reserve the right to shame you.  Tim fucking Tebow.

Poor choice of words on my part.  He has said he doesn't want to go to the Big12 and would leave if that is the direction that Louisville decides to go.  He is an east coast guy and much prefers recruiting and playing there as opposed to Big12 country.  Maybe UL calls his bluff, or just doesnt care what he thinks though.

It also appears that WVU and UL have 27 month out clauses, so if the Big12 is making a move in the short term neither of those teams are the answer.  They wouldn't be playing football until 2014.

Big12 may offer enough financial incentive to cover the costs of breaking the out clause

It wasn't the repeal so much as there was no offer of an alternative.  They simply have to go, and we're back to where we were before Enron, Tyco, WorldCom etc. etc.  That's no bueno.

You would expect them to go into that in the Republican primary debate?  is it not also plausible that they would seek alternatives?

In a recent Republican primary debate, a number of the candidates offered that they would not only repeal Dodd-Frank, but they would go back further and repeal Sarbanes-Oxley.

While it has probably helped in many places, there are also real problems with Sarbanes and we all pay for it.  I'm not certain it's a net positive.

Nationalization is not the only way to do this. This is essentially what credit unions are. They exist to provide a service, not make a profit.

Certainly, but are we as a nation going to outlaw for-profit banks?  What's next?  Meals are pretty important to society, shouldn't we do co-op restraunts too?

90
Beer and Queso / Re: Are You Shitting Me?
« on: October 21, 2011, 02:57:27 pm »
I don't think banks should be nationalized, but I also think it's a little rich to complain about regulations crimping profits when you're talking about the difference between making $6 billion a quarter versus making $5.5 billion.  How much money is enough, really?

A ridiculous comment, and unfortunatly all too common.  To look at the final number alone, out of context, to question "how much is enough" is laughable.  You have to look at profit/loss as a percentage of revenue.  You have to understand what investments were made to generate that profit and what the roi for those investments were.  Did they invest $1 to generate $6 Billion?  Did they invest $5 Billion to generate $6 Billion?

91
Beer and Queso / Re: Are You Shitting Me?

They should make a profit, but should they be allowed to overcharge for services?  Some argue that market forces would govern this, but in banking that's not been a brake on their behaviour.  The reason they get away with charging you $30 to do something that does not hurt them in the slightest, and costs them 0.00001c, is because they all do it.

People shouldn't bounce checks, but it happens.  That event shouldn't be a windfall for a bank.

Good lord, man.  Do you think your dinner should be billed this way too?  Your steak has a 20% markup and your drink has a 500% markup.  Deciding when and where to charge a premium is a businesses prerogative.  If they followed your model, there are all kinds of services you would suddenly start paying more for to make up for their losses elsewhere.  The belief that you'll somehow come out better in the end is false.

Beer and Queso / Re: Are You Shitting Me?

I'm pretty sure they can't charge the payee, only the account holder.

Nope.  Happens all of the time.

Usually, though, a person cashes a check at their own bank.  The banks probably have friendly agreements amongst each other not to charge each other, which is why your bank doesnt pass a charge on to you.  Nonetheless, they can do it, and do.

Beer and Queso / Re: Are You Shitting Me?

Quite hilariously, back in the UK a few years ago, someone stumbled upon a never-repealed old law (19th century vintage) that stated that bank charges must reflect the bank's actual costs, and not be inflated for punitive or revenue-generating purposes.  They took their bank to court for charging 30 quid to bounce a check, and established a legal precedent that wiped out the banks' ability to fuck with people just because they wanted to.  IIRC, they proved that a bank's cost to bounce a check was a fraction of a penny, because all it took was a fraction of a second of processor time.  Soon, downloadable forms became readily available, allowing everyone to claw back from their bank all the overcharging they'd suffered over the years.  And the banks had to honour those demands.

I doubt such a law exists over here, but it would be nice...

Only if you believe banks should not exist to make a profit.  Nationalizing our banks is an option, but not a good one, I don't believe.

They can charge the account holder for the privilege of writing a check but not the payee when he goes to cash it. Credit card companies can.

Are you sure this is true?  I think they can in fact charge a fee for cashing a check written against an account they hold.  They just currently choose not to as that would put them at a competitive disadvantage.

The quality of life is thanks to a lot of things, and risky behaviour is part of that.  But the risk (and the potential rewards) in risky behaviour should accrue to those taking the risk, and not be socialised thus rendering the behaviour risk-less for the individual.

Agree.  I'm not sure where to stand on bailing them out.  It seems both wrong, but also nessisary at the time.

This BoA situation is a classic example.  By dumping their risky (and likely to fail) derivatives into an FDIC-insured subsidiary, they avoid the consequences of their risk-taking, and put the downside on the Federal government.  It may be legal within current regulations, but it shouldn't be.

The Feds have been fucking around with financial regulation since the 80s.  From the moment the tinkering began, instead of the stable and consistently growing financial system that existed from the 50s, it's been boom-bust-boom-bust, rinse-repeat.  That's not good for anyone except those who speculate on booms and busts.

Add to that the widespread abandonment of pensions in favour of 401k plans, and the pressure on social security and medicare, and you're facing a situation where it is harder and harder to contemplate actually retiring at any point.  My ex-Father-in-Law had his retirement savings wiped out shortly before being forced into early retirement in the 90s.  Through no choice of his own, he had to start drawing on his retirement funds at the exact time that they were at their lowest unit values for a decade, and he did not have the luxury of time to wait for them to come back.

This is why a boom and bust cycle sucks, and this is why regulation to engender stability in he financial markets is necessary.  The banks exist because we allow them to, not the other way around.

You may very well be 100% right, but I'm saying that "That's not good for anyone except those who speculate on booms and busts" can't be substantiated.  There is no doubt that we all benefited during the booms.  We have a pretty fucking amazing quality of life in the US and a lot of that is thanks to risky behavior.

Actually, we do pay the fee...somewhere along the line. We are paying for a service to conduct business somewhere. Either the service company or the other business is having to pay a fee. It will be passed on to us. I doubt government regulation will make it cheaper or better.

The vendor has no obligation to pass that fee on to us, nor do they have any obligation to take credit cards*.  That is up to them to run their business as competitively (or not) as they see fit.  If they want to overprice their product to the point where customers use alternatives, that's their prerogative.  Unless they're a credit card company, apparently.  We effectivly pushed a revenue cut on credit card companies, all but forcing them to find alternative revenue streams, or just telling their shareholders (including you and me) that they lost significant value overnight... Welcome new checking fees!

*I think it's worth pointing out that many of us (I hope) pay nothing directly for using credit cards.  A damn fine, free, convenience.  The vendors also greatly benefit from credit card usage.  Remember standing behind 10 people in line writing checks?  How about watching teenagers trying to figure out how much change to give you?  How about waiting while I go open another roll of quarters?  Need to run to the bank to deposit cash, or grab more $5s?

PAC was not an option because the UT coaches unanimously opposed having to go west. we were headed to the ACC if the Big 12 blew up.

I was actually referring to the first round of discussions last year once Nebraska bolted.  It looks like we were then thinking it was either PAC or Big12, but decided on the Big12 because of LHN.  The ACC option was new this year when it looked like we might not be able to keep the Big12 alive, right?

If we *really* believe in free markets, the credit/debit card fee crap is easy to fix: let the credit/debit card agents charge any damn fee they want for their cards, but make bloody sure that the fee shows up, clearly identified, as part of the cost of the goods or services. Right now they get away with murder because they get to negotiate their fee structure with the vendors and completely hide it.

I'm not following.  What interest do we have in what fees two independent companies charge each other?  We don't pay the fee.

Or, by not regulating enough and watching the banks create the conditions that lead to the biggest recession in 80 years, he's anti-business as well.

True.  Of course, we can't have it both ways.  Much of the success we've had as a country has come from loose money, too.  If we want to say "if only we hadn't killed Glass-Steagall" it's only fair to recognize that the benefits of doing so (crazy large, and yes risky, investments) would also have gone away.  We now know that a hyperactive investment period went bust to put us in a nasty recession.  Do we know that a stagnant economy might not have also done the same?

Can't really see what he's done to be "anti-business".  Didn't BoA just post huge profits?

I'm not going to say all regulations are bad, because that's clearly not true.  However, it is quite possible/probable that some-to-many regulations (pre existing, or implemented by this administration) have done more harm to business than good to those they were meant to protect.  Any of those open the door to an "anti-business" label.  Some of the credit card reforms immediatly strike me as one such example.

I have heard that Pitino has all but told people that he won't be the coach at Louisville if they decide to join the Big12.  I have also heard that Ollie Luck isn't interested in moving WVU west.  I think they are gonna hold out for the SEC.

And if UT wanted to bolt when the Big12 was still made up with teams like A&M, Nebraska, Colorado and Mizzou.  Are they really gonna want to hand around when those teams are replaced with something along the lines of TCU, BYU, Louisville? WVU? UH? SMU?, etc..?    Speaking of, from 2 people I trust with UofH that Chuck Neinas has reached out and talked with UH AD Mack Rhoades.  I'm not trying to say a bid is imminent or anything like that, but it is interesting that they are talking.

Maybe I am crazy, but I just don't see UT settling for this reconstituted Big12.   Seems they are more interested in being aligned with either the USCs, Stanfords, Cals out west or the Michigans, Penn States, Wisconsins, Michigan States, up North.

It almost seems like we are 3 or 4 years from a Big12 leftovers (Baylor, ISU, Kansas, KSU, Tech, etc..) merging with the Big East leftovers ala the CUSA/MWC merger.   Then you have PAC, B1G, SEC & ACC, the "super conferences" plus the 2 mergers, kick in 2 wild cards and you got a great 8 team playoff.

My impression/understanding is that UT doesn't want to go anywhere.  PAC was only interesting up to the point that it was decided that LHN was a non-starter.  I think UT rides out the Big12 (continuing to plug any holes that appear) as long as it's a viable BCS conference, or if/when the BCS implodes, a conference that offers a realistic opportunity to play for a CFB championship

I worked for AT&T Wireless 15 years ago.  Then at least, their support training was extensive and high quality, and the hiring process was difficult to get through.  I felt like we really had a strong team, rather than just warm bodies to fill seats.  As a result of that (I think) they gave us fairly broad authority to help customers with billing issues: eat unreasonable roaming charges, back-date to better rate plans, credit for dropped calls, etc.  More often than not, it was easier to just take care of the issue rather than try to defend a charge the customer wasn't happy with, and I know more than once we were told to consider the cost of us being on the phone versus the fee we were being asked to remove.  Obviously, a lot can and probably has changed since then, but it may still pay off to simply call them again and continue the conversation.

I only attended one game when Ryan was playing--this pitch got away from Ryan and it looked like the guy he hit was going to take his base but then didn't. I loved that Ryan's family owned the Express and really wished drayton found a way to keep Mr. Ryan associated with the Astros. I only have respect and admiration for Ryan as a player, businessman, robin ventura batterer, and owner. Also, my youngest brother is a deep and true Ranger fan and it was great to get to attend the WS game that the Rangers won with him. But all that goodwill fucking stops if the Astros share a division with the Rangers. I don't know if Ryan is involved in the push to get the Astros into the goddamn AL (I assume he is for the fuck all nothing that it's worth),. But if the Astros do end up in the same division then fuck goddamn Nolan Ryan involved or not. Yes, I prefer the NL to the AL, but if the Astros are in the AL then fuck it, they are my team hello DH may I have another. Angels, Mariners, and A's mean less than a brad pitt baseball movie that I will never see but so what. But the Rangers, well I'm just going to keep assuming that Mr. Ryan wanted the Astros in the AL west and I'm ready to hate them day one.  Don't have enough love in my dark three-chambered heart for another team.

Honest question - what took Apple so long?  All of the above functionality has been a part of, or possible with (via apps), Android for a good while.  Anchoring the iPhone/iPad to iTunes has been nothing short of problematic for several people I know, due in no small part to iTunes' ability to be very PMSey.

My guess is that they just kept finding it easier to leverage an existing infrastructure and focus on new product.  But, yeah, it's past due.

Yes, among "200" other updates included

Side cloud question:  Will deleting email from the phone delete them from the ipad, or vice versa?

Depends on your mail server/type, I believe.  My POP accounts all leave a copy on the server when they pull down an email to the iPad.  You then have options on how you want to handle email you've deleted from the iPad.  They can remove the copy from the server immediatly, later, or never.

My Exchange account (work) keeps in sync.  Any deleted from iPad are deleted from Outlook, phone, etc next time I use those to look at the account.

Non-food related, but every time my wife goes to Sam's or Costco she can't help but peruse the dog beds.  I know, weird.  Sure, our mutt chews hers up and it looks tattered, but every freaking time we get a new one it gets torn apart within days.  I have to write on our lists "No Dog Beds" just to keep her honest.  That's what kind of stickler I am at home.  Iron fist.

That, and we have about 3,000 boxes of Ziploc baggies of all sizes, in case anybody needs some.

In my house, asking why something was bought gets the automatic "You go next time"-card played.  We perpetually have one two many loaves of bread and the cereal boxes have begun taking over an adjacent shelf, but I don't dare say a word.

One other benefit is that as the app logs your pace, it will serve up music with a beat that matches your pace for repetitive sports like running or biking or, if you have prescribed a target pace, slowly ramp up the beat to get you back on pace if you are falling behind.  This is a serious benefit for athletes in training.

With your own music, or theirs?

Okay, so I'm on my 4th time as well (not watching per se, but am navigating back and forth to the page and playing it on a minimized window).  Don't mind continuing to do so... but... it still shows the same page views as the first 3 times I watched it.  If it is counting each of my successive views I'll keep doing this same ole' song and dance as I think about it through the day, but if not I'm gonna call it quits.  Anyone know how 'views' are tabulated, or what I need to do to make sure that each subsequent view is tabulated?

Youtube has software attempting to detect such users and preventing the counter from increasing for them.  It's probably based off of your IP and/or cookies.  You won't be able to inflate the number yourself.

The "serious coin" is being made by the D1 schools, which are using these kids-plain and simple. It's a form of slavery if you ask me.

That's a bit harsh.  These are non-profit institutions and the "serious coin" being made is going back into paying for those very scholarships, academic departments, and (in the case of UT) the academic departments.  Now, you may rightly point at the coaching salaries, but if that's what it takes to generate the serious coin above, so be it.  That's just a wise investment.

Is it up to 12?  I thought it was 5-6 years.

Still being debated apparently.

Quote
Missouri was more interested in a proposal that would grant rights for the 13 years remaining on the Fox television deal struck with the Big 12 in April, sources said.

Missouri and Oklahoma pushed for high school content restrictions on Tier 3 (that would impact the Longhorn Network) as part of the 13-year proposal, sources said.

But talks about granting rights for 13 years broke off after negotiations started Sunday night and went into Monday, sources said.

The talks broke off, in part, because Texas was hesitant to commit to granting rights for more than a decade while also having to make concessions on content impacting the Longhorn Network.

So Texas agreeing to restrict any and all high school content for the next six years, while also granting rights for that length ended up as the compromise, sources said.

There was talk recently that the Big12 would increase the exit penalties. Has that happened? That could be a reason for Mizzou to abstain if they are planning on leaving soon.

From the meeting when they canned Beebe:
Quote
The board, which consists of the presidents and chancellors of the Big 12's nine remaining schools, also agreed to new exit penalties. Members leaving the Big 12 will now forfeit all shared revenue. It's unclear whether the penalties will affect Texas A&M, which has withdrawn from the Big 12 effective at the end of this school year

What point are you trying to make?  What is an "aw-shucks kid" and who other than you labeled him that?  Who says he was or wasn't shocked that fans weren't satisfied with his performance?  What does any of that have to do with playing for pride and fun?  And what does any of that have to do with the size of UTs Athletic Department?

the reality is that gilbert plays in an era when his every move is closely followed literally since he's a sophomore(?) in high school. then he goes to college and that college expects him to bring it a national championship every year, and if not then come heroically close. his every move is now discussed by ESPN and bored people on the internet like you and me. he's front and center of an athletic program that brings in millions and millions of dollars. i have no idea of his make-up, but you can't say that he's just a normal kid playing for pride and fun.

Can you even make sense out of what you just wrote?

A bunch of stuff the kid has no control over, therefore he cant be a normal kid playing for pride and fun?  Got it.

give me a break jim. you don't see a difference between big-time college sports now and 20 years ago? not saying gilbert or anybody else deserves to be booed or that he's not giving it his "best," but to act like these are just sweet little old kids playing for fun ignores the reality of their stature.

It's the same kids as 20 years ago.  That the Athletic Department has grown up is no reason to look at the kid more harshly.  By the way, these kids are contributing members of a successful Athletic Department that is now giving the University $30MM for academics.

I didn't know he did NFL.   Maybe it's Davis that brings out this side of him.   It's almost like they're not even watching the game.

He was CBS's C or D team, so we saw a bit of him on the Texans games.  His emotion sets him apart, but he can't that alone carry him.  He seems very unprepared tonight.

I seriously don't know what to make of this game.   This is the least satisfying 27 pt lead I can remember.

Hard to say a team should be up by 40 at the half... but they should be up by 40 at the half.

The aspect that concerns me is the increased population. There is a much greater demand for water than there was in the mid-50s. Forget about 2020, things are going to be ugly by next fall if there's no significant rain.

Killing off the rice crops next year will help.  We should be good in LCRA area for another year, but beyond that...

I’m still, and probably always will be, a Clark so to appease your desire for Clark-blood I’ll provide the bait.

Hunter Pence rulz!!!!  Ed Wade sux and again proved it by trading my boy to the Phillies, a real team, for nothing.  How many times are the Phils going to hose us?

Who does this “Jim” guy think he is telling me to observe a pitcher’s motion, a batter’s swing, or a fielder’s footwork when ERA, batting average, and zone rating tell me all that I need to know?

Moving to the American League will be *awesome* because we can see the Sawks and Yanks every year, we get a natural rivalry with the Rangers, and, best of all, we finally get to dump bunting strategy for DH power!  It's not like the Astros have a history in the National League or anything.

Billy Spiers is not omnipotent.

You’re welcome.  I’m available to participate in strosrays’ (someone else’s?) 10-point Clark posting destruction upon request.

Oh, wait, one more baiting -->   :)

I haven't run the numbers, but 200,000 seems low for 130 years.  Even 154 games a season between 20 teams would get to 200,000 after 66 years.

Hint, teams have to play other teams

I don't know if I've mentioned this before but there is a golf course (The Bandit) on a bluff across the river from the Slack Shack.  Located on the edge of the bluff, 40 feet above the river, and about 200 yards downstream from me is the 8th (I think) green. It's a ball eater of a hole.

Occasionally I kayak down there and pick up 30 to 40 balls along the water's edge and pack 'em back home to hit off of my deck back into the river, or across into the bluff. I'm not a good golfer, and I'm using clubs left by Alkie, and they're at least 3 of 4 inches too short for me, but I love the hell out of striking those golf balls with a club.

I don't know what you paid, but you STOLE the Slack Shack

I would be all over the driving range idea; I am not kidding. I'd probably also cut in a chipping green.

There's four acres of cedar behind my house I hit into.  I have 2-3 five gallon buckets of balls I've collected that I hit, and then occasionally take my kids and go hunt them down.  My game is always at its best when I'm hitting back there regularly.

One day, I may have to make an offer on that land...

Now, I'm sure this happens all the time; GMs pretend they're interested in a player to drive the price up. But why admit it, now, especially naming a specific player/agent? Even Boras doesn't come out a year later and say "Wow, I really played that Tom Hicks like a fuckin' fiddle on the Chan Ho Park contract" or whatever.

Between this article and the one a couple months ago about Kei Igawa, I'm starting to think Cashman is really a classless fucker.

I'd be inclined to give him a bit more credit.  He just told the other players he's willing to bluff, which has tremendous value.

Actually, after explaining, and having the loan officer understand and agree, I asked at what point common sense entered the decision.  He said it never does.

As we learned, banks don't think about mortgages at an individual item level, but rather in large buckets of similar loans.  Logic occasionally loses when that happens.  I see it where I work all of the time.  Policies that I'm certain make sense and are justifiably appropriate 4 layers above me are completely flawed at the execution level with some specific implementations.  95% of the time, they are fine, but the other 5% make me look stupid to my team and/or customers.  Being with a small and flexible org again certainly looks appealing at times.

275
Talk Zone / Re: Update on Crane

In my particular case, I approached the bank about a loan.  We worked through the application/process, and everything was cool until 3 days before closing.  They called and said they were now getting nervous about the appraisal.  Apparently the value of the property was too high for what I was paying for it.  I said, yeah, the seller was in a bind and was willing to forgo some equity for a quick sale.  The bank said no one gets a deal like that.  Something ain't right.  And simply backed out.

Ugh!  On the bright side, you should be able to lock at an even more amazing rate now

By the way, I really like the zillow broker finder if you're looking again.  It made it simple to find that one guy who works on volume.

You mean how Texas ended up staying in the Big 12 with OU, keeping the LHN, probably adding BYU and replacing the commissioner they didn't want anyway? Or do you mean the part where OU learned they couldn't go to the PAC-12 and didn't have too many other options?

Or the part where Aggy got their SEC! SEC! SEC! rally put on hold?  Other than the lack of productivity at work, this has been quite entertaining.

I used my awesome googling skills to find this quote from earlier in the season. I guess he hasn't given up that WoW addiction, yet.

Quote
Speaking of Pence, the Phillies continue to find nonstop amusement in the high-octane pace of their new right fielder. Manager Charlie Manuel told Rumblings Pence is one of the few players he has ever had who makes him think twice about high-fiving him after a home run. Why is that? "Stick out your arm," Manuel chuckled, "and he might break it."

And bench coach Pete Mackanin reports, after a week of watching Pence's ferocious hacks at the plate, he kiddingly told Pence he should try blooping in a hit once in a while. To which Pence replied: "Pete, I don't do that. I melt faces."

I was skeptical of the whole "ball fitting" thing before.  Not now.  It saved me a fortune and improved my game.

Really?  Noticably?  Granted my game sucks, but I can not honestly say I find any difference among any new ball I've played.

I've stocked up on $9.99/dozen Calloway Warbirds from Acadamy after a year of trying different balls for shits and grins.  I get the distinct impression that the variances that remain amongst balls available today are primarily only discernable by very good players.  I'm not going to notice +/-5 yards on a drive or "touch" with chip shots around the green.

So the reports I'm reading indicate none are looking to negotiate that as part of bringing UT into the fold.  It's all speculation, so I won't bother to link.  But if it's true, it's Big 12 or Indie.  This is looking like a bigger cluster with each passing day...

Even if not speculation, but verifiable statements from those conferences, wouldn't they likely state that regardless of their true willingness to negotiate?  If there is a bidding war between Pac12 and Big10, neither would want to be the first to cave on that point, at least not in public where the other can see where they're at.  When it comes down to inking a deal, though, my money is that one (or both) of them breaks.

312
Beer and Queso / Re: A&M to SEC?
« on: September 13, 2011, 01:31:01 pm »
Why are they walking away from $300MM?  How would they even get out of that contract?

Doesn't seem likely, though perhaps there is an equivalent (or close enough? whatever that might be given UTs bankroll) opportunity in a reworked Pac12 or Big10 network contract.

According to those that claim to have actually read it, or those that are referencing other posters that claim to have actually read it, there are opportunities to either rework or void the contract in the event of a conference realignment.  Considering the events of last year, that would seem to be a reasonable clause to have worked in.

But, yeah, I don't think this one is likely.  LHN isn't going anywhere (interpret that as you will.)

Any willing to considering it within negotiations?  Other than that, just Big 12.

I was wearing a pair of Nike golf shoes down here a couple of years ago. The humidity and rain (remember what that is?) takes a toll on any clothing but golf shoes especially so those Nikes had no chance. Anyway, in the middle of the round the entire sole of my right shoe just peeled off leaving me soleless. I felt completely emasculated walking around like some European placekicker with a single bar on his helmet.

Many years ago I had an early morning tee time at Circle C, a full hour south from my house.  For some reason that day, I decided to just grab some socks and slipped on some sandals rather than putting on tennis shoes.  I get to the clubhouse, pop the trunk and FUCK! no shoes.  This is why the club house can sell shoes for double the price, I suppose, but I and my size 15 feet am out of luck.  I had the choice of walking away from my prepaid tee time or playing in sandles... by the 9th hole, my skin on my instep was all torn up.  I ended up having to put the socks on, too, completing the look of a total tool.

But, hey, golf.

The Million Dollar Question.  Guesses are all over the place.  In no particular order:

-Keep plugging the holes in the Big12 with other schools
-Pac-12
-Big10 with or without ND
-ACC
-Independent

-All of the above with or without Tex/OU game
-All of the above with or without Tex/A&M game
-All of the above with or without LHN

Gilbert got replaced because he makes too many poor decisions with the football.    His second interception vs BYU is a perfect example.    He forced a deep ball to Mike Davis into the teeth of double coverage.    It was a low percentage pass that someone with his experience should know not to throw.

Some writers are confused by you're and your. A mistake involving these constitutes a grammatical howler.

You're
You're is a contraction of you are.  It has no other uses. This is a 100% rule.  If you cannot expand it to you are in your sentence, then it is wrong.

Examples:

I know you're leaving at 7 o'clock, but would you like another sherry?
(Expands to you are - correct)

Please ask Joan to post the parcel when you're in London.
(Expands to you are - correct)

You said that you couldn't believe you're ears.
(Does not expand to you are - should be your)
Your
The word your sits before another word (usually a noun or a pronoun) to show that it belongs to you (e.g., your car, your arm), is of you (e.g., your picture, your photograph) or is related to you (e.g., your uncle).  Your is a possessive adjective.  (Other possessive adjectives are: my, your, his, her, its, our and their.)

Examples:

Our expert will answer your questions about pensions and savings.
(questions belonging to you)

Sarah doesn't look like your sister.
(related to you)

This doesn't seem like new info to me.  It sounds like McLane is admitting to what I already assume and the press has basically reported:  there is a MLB threat to withhold approval until Crane agrees to move and that has always been the sticking point.

In a way, if he wants to use it, I think Crane is in a stronger PR position.  Just bludgeon MLB as extortionists and wait them out.  If the press would turn on MLB instead of Crane, MLB would likely cave.

Don't think Crane can win a PR war given the dirt already aired

Just out of curiosity, the Astros played 28 regular season games on the west coast in 1980 versus 14 this year.

Which rumor specifically? That we're going to the Big 10, or that we made a joint presentation with ND to the Big10?  Even if there is no immediate intent to move in that direction, it seems reasonable that we would have this type of discussion now to at least know what options are out there should OU decide to go Pac12.  No?

This sums it up nicely.

I hate the idea of moving to the AL with a passion, but I think the argument that West Coast games will be a detriment generally is bogus.  The Astros were in the NL West for roughly 25 years, with SF, LA and SD (and CIN, and ATL, for some reason), so they played a fair amount of West Coast games, and East Coast games (Braves, Reds).  In fact, none of their division foes were in the Central Time Zone.  But I don't remember it being any big deal.

I don't think TV played a role in fandom to near the degree it does today.  Having a significant number of games being played past 10pm must have some impact to viewership->ad revenue->team revenue->payroll, no?

I hear ya', but since it's on a Northwestern board versus some slipshod Nebrasks or U of I board--pick whichever one you want, Illini or Hoosier--it just seems more credible.  I guess we should wait for Chip Brown to tell us what to be suspicious about or humored by.

Same poster, later in post

Quote
ESPN attorneys have already contacted the Big Ten regarding the content of this post. Again, I am in no way affiliated with the Big Ten conference nor should anything I write be considered credible in any context.

However, ESPN has unfairly used its bully pulpit to influence Texas stakeholders to prefer the PAC. The Big Ten feels that if the current trend of reporting that Texas only has interest in the PAC 12 continues, this would merit a major legal action against ESPN.

I feel like you guys are being a little dramatic.  Yeah, being in the AL is less than ideal.  But are you really an Astros fan (or a baseball fan for that matter) because you enjoy seeing pitchers bunt and managers conduct double-switches?  Is that really the part of the game that makes you love baseball?

I am very much pro-NL and anti-DH, but I'm not going to stop following baseball because the Astros move to the AL and I'm definitely not going to start rooting for some other NL team because the Astros have moved.  I feel like the latter is pretty much everything SnS goes against.

One last thing, do you really think watching the Astros win 80-100 in the AL is worse than watching the Astros lose 110+ in the NL?  Not saying it's either/or, but at the end of the day winning is all that matters.  It can't get much worse than what 2011 has been.

Why don't you sit the next few out.

http://blog.chron.com/sportsjustice/2011/09/astros-fire-a-competent-employee-and-a-good-man-and-so-it-goes/

As usual, its rather biased a shoddy reporting.  He focuses on a few players Pendergrass signed, but gives the reason from the Astros as having missed on too many players - effectively trying to make the Astros look like morons.  I don't know Pendergrass or his work and hey, the Astros may be complete morons for letting him go, but it would have been good to know who else Pendergrass signed that could have been "misses" to complete the story.

What do you guys think about Pendergrass?

The head-scratcher for me is why this is done now, in the midst of an ownership change

I think whatever fans the team might lose in a move to the AL will be dwarfed by the number of fans they gain who are attracted by a team playing the Rangers, the Yankees, the Red Sox, hat et al.

Would be interesting to see if they could offset the loss of ticket sales from fewer cubs and braves games.

345
Talk Zone / Re: Update on Crane

I'll admit it is kind of chicken little, but there is certainly anecdotal evidence that interest will wane.  Even if that translates into something like 20% less interest, that is a lot.  Yeah, he might be able to make that revenue back by catering to non-Astro fans, but fuck that.  That is the Rays model.

Realistically, I think interest with existing fans will wane, but the on field performance was already driving that to happen anyway, particularly with the casual ones.  A new breed of casual fans will pick up where other's left off, though.  The AL teams will draw plenty of crowds, and Houston still has a very nice park that might keep them coming back.

It sucks, but they've probably played through the possible scenarios already and have come to terms with losing some fans short term.

Texas would have to significantly alter their TV station to include TT if they were to move to the PAC#.

The issue for Texas to me is that they can no longer tell recruits that they are the premier school in the premier conference in Texas.  A&M can sell themselves as the only Texas school playing in the premier conference in the country.  If you want to stay in Texas and measure yourself against the best in the country there's only one place to go.

And if you want to stay in Texas and play for a NC?

No the opposite - if you live in Texas and get directv, you get every game without paying for ExtraInnings. I didn't understand it either - DirecTV carries Fox Sports Houston (everywhere in the country), and since all of Texas in in the viewing area, the games aren't blacked out. The issue is that most cable systems outside of Houston don't carry FSH. If you get dish, you will get all the games (and it will be cheaper than cable + EI for sure).

The problem is when FSH doesnt carry the game, as has happened the last 4 nights.  It was on Fox 20 which is not on DTV outside of Houston.

Yes.  That's all it is.

The first link was a fire about a mile from our house last week.  These poor people just had another pop up right next to them within the last hour.  Huge billows of smoke out our back window, but it's a little down wind from us so we're in good shape, but I'm afraid they're in a lot of trouble.  Our fire department was all in Steiner.

As of about an hour ago, it is now an arrestable offence to smoke cigarettete outside.

How does the LHN work? Does it come as part of the basic package with TW or Comcast or DirectTV or Uverse...? Do you have to pay extra to have it added like HBO or MLB ot NFL?

I'm tailgating it down at the Slack Shack so all I have is the free TW feed. At least it includes FOXSW, ESPN1 & ESPN2, and Versus. Go Coogs!

ESPN has only successfully sold it to Verizon, Grande Communications and a few other very small cable companies.  The others are balking at the price ($.40/customer on standard tier) so very few will be able to see tonight's game in Austin, much less the rest of the country.

Sorry, all.  Turns out Yahoo can't handle each league picking their own draft time, so they have limits on when you can do your draft.  There were no Monday night spots left.  Also, unless you draft by tomorrow, your league can't use week one for some reason.  Technology.

I've also set the league to a $30 buy-in, and we'll pay out top 3 places (50%, 30%, 20%) this season.

I need confirmation from everyone that this all (draft and buy-in) works for them.  Please reply or PM me ASAP.  If we have anyone that needs to bail, we still have three others that want to join:

In line for a spot:
*T.J.

Not saying they are anything like the same hitter, but didn't Bagwell develop his power at the major league level?  I remember when he was acquired there was talk that his previous year in the minors he only hit 4 HRs or something like that.  I don't think one had to be a big-time scout to see Bags had the potential, but we remember the 40-HR-a-year guy, not the skinny kid he started out as.

I will happily accept this as my gift from the Astros.

Not shocking.  Was surprised folks were speculating he'd get through.  His contract is not ridiculously high, however it's high enough that the Astros aren't going to see a whole lot back in terms of prospects. I could see SF claiming him just so Arizona doesn't get him, etc, etc.

IIRC the auto option pickup was presumed to the problem.

Isn't the point of the death penalty to be devastating?

To what end, is the question.  They didn't intend to so massively destroy the athletic department for several generations.  They honestly thought two years without football could be recoverable.  It wasn't.

Go back and watch Pony Excess.

Every member of the SMU staff, coach to AD to board of regents, not only knew of, but coordinated the payments.

Same show, they talked about how devastating the death penalty was and unlikely to ever be used again.  This will surely test that out.

I will not buy Goodyear tires.  They are junk.  Michelin is the only tire (or tyre for the Limester) I'll put on a passenger vehicle of mine.  In fact, just put a new set on my '03 pickem up last week, after getting 80,000 from the last set.

Check out Toyo Proxes 4 next time.

I had a Z4 a few years ago now, when BMW were offering run-flat tires as an option.  I wanted the trunk space, so I went with the option, not realising that the suspension was tuned for the softer "regular" tires and would not be re-tuned for the run flats.  Fred Flinstone has a comfier ride.

Subsequently, BMW made run-flats standard (to the chagrin of motorheads everywhere), but at least the suspension and tires are now in tune.

My last four rides have come with goodyear run-flats that I did not keep.  Every single one of them were shit.  20-25k miles before needing replaced and the ride was always much better when I replaced them with regulars (all z rated).

And how long have you had it?

My brother and his wife used it.  He lost a lot of weight and really toned up great.  He is doing another round.  She injured herself trying to to do so much; she is very petite and I think did too much weights too quickly.

Several years now.  Back when I was in weight loss mode my wife and I both gave it a shot.  It really kicks your ass.  The sessions are a little over an hour of near constant movement.

I thought they did a really good job putting it together, it was just too much for me.  I think it was day 3 or day 4 where I could barely walk.  I know people throw that phrase out there after a hard work out, but I'm dead fucking serious.  I could barely walk.

If you read up on it, you'll find many suggest that this not be your initial attempt to get into shape, but rather try something more entry level for a month or two in preparation.  When you have to prepare several months for an exercise routine, that should tell you something!

If you plan to take the truck off road or put a boat in the water it would help.

If the bigger rims would require low profile tires to still fit, you might feel more road vibrations through the steering wheel.

« on: August 18, 2011, 08:56:41 am »
I'm going to throw out a theory with the added qualification that this is pure and unquestionable speculation with no basis in reality.

What if this approval process for Crane is being leveraged to allow McLane to rebuild the club and cut payroll without having to take the head directly?  All of the trades and salary dump maneuvers can be blamed on the "new owner's direction".  After all, the new owner was all but approved, the final decision just a rubber-stamp process (only it isn't!).

It's far fetched... admittedly.

This is where you say "It's an idea - not something I've thought about enough to support or not support."
